'I will not tell you my authority for acting like this'.

Jesus had gone into the Temple and was teaching, when the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him and said, ‘What authority have you for acting like this? And who gave you this authority?’ ‘And I’ replied Jesus ‘will ask you a question, only one; if you tell me the answer to it, I will then tell you my authority for acting like this. John’s baptism: where did it come from: heaven or man?’ And they argued it out this way among themselves, ‘If we say from heaven, he will retort, “Then why did you refuse to believe him?”; but if we say from man, we have the people to fear, for they all hold that John was a prophet.’ So their reply to Jesus was, ‘We do not know.’ And he retorted, ‘Nor will I tell you my authority for acting like this.’

(i) Monday, Third Week of Advent

At the end of today’s first reading we have one of the great prophecies of the coming ruler in Israel, God’s anointed one or Messiah, ‘a star from Jacob takes the leadership, a sceptre arises from Israel’. A sceptre is an ornamental staff carried by rulers on ceremonial occasions as a symbol of their sovereignty or royal authority. Jesus displayed royal authority but not in the way kings at the time normally did so. In the gospel reading, Jesus was asked by the religious leaders, ‘What authority have you for acting like this? And who gave you this authority?’ He had just driven out all who were selling and buying in the temple, overturning the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. We know the answer to those questions Jesus was asked. He acted on the authority of God his Father. He was in the Temple, God’s house, and as God’s Son he had authority there. He used his authority to show by this symbolic action that the Temple was not being run as God would have wanted. He was using his authority to do God’s will on earth, to put right what was wrong, to bring God’s kingdom to earth. That is how the risen Lord uses his authority today. He is always at work in our world to bring God’s kingdom to earth, a kingdom of justice, love and peace. He wants to engage in this work through all of us, his disciples, today. He shares his authority with us, in virtue of our baptism, so that, in the power of the Spirit, we can put right what is wrong, bringing life where there is death, light where there is darkness, truth where there is falsehood, and justice where it is denied.

(ii) Monday, Third Week of Advent

Authority has acquired something of a bad name in recent times. Authority has not always been used well, as we know. People in positions of authority tend to have some power, and that power is not always put to good use. There is a much greater questioning of authority than there used to be. In the gospel reading, the Jewish chief priests and elders question the authority of Jesus. He had just entered the Temple and had driven out all who were buying and selling, overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. He had acted authoritatively in a domain where the religious leaders of Jerusalem believed he had no authority. They resented this show of authority. Yet, at the very beginning of his ministry the ordinary people of Galilee responded very positively to his authority. They were astounded at his teaching for he taught them as one having authority. Jesus spoke and acted with God’s authority. Some were delighted with this; others felt threatened by it. As risen Lord Jesus continues to speak and act with God’s authority. This Advent we pray that we ourselves would be open to what the Lord is saying and doing with God’s authority today. We pray that we would be responsive to the Lord’s authoritative presence among us, knowing that this is an authority that will always bring life.

(iii) Monday, Third Week of Advent

In this morning’s gospel reading, the religious leaders put a question to Jesus, ‘What authority have you for acting like this?’ The context of that question was Jesus’ cleansing of the temple in Jerusalem. They wanted to know what authority Jesus had for doing what he did. Jesus did not answer their question, because it was the question of people who were not open to what God was doing in the life of John the Baptist or in the life of Jesus. Those of us who read Matthew’s gospel in faith know the answer to the question of the religious leaders. Jesus’ authority to do what he did in the temple derives from the fact that he is Emmanuel, God-with-us. God was present and active in and through Jesus and that gave Jesus the authority to do what he did in the temple, the house of God. Jesus’ sometimes used his authority to heal the broken and to enlighten those in darkness. At other times he used his authority to renew what needed renewing. Archbishop Dermot Martin said last Friday that the coming pastoral letter from the Pope may well call for a very significant reorganization of the church in Ireland. The church is always in need of renewal and reform. The Lord continues to exercise his authority today by prompting and guiding such renewal as it is needed. This Advent we are asked to humbly open our hearts to this good work of the Lord in our own lives and in the life of our church.

(iv) Monday, Third Week of Advent

John the Baptist is very much associated with the season of Advent. During this season the church puts before us many of the gospel texts that mention John the Baptist. This morning’s gospel reading is an example of such a text. Jesus asks his opponents, the chief priests and the elders, where the baptism of John came from; did it come from heaven or from earth? The true answer is that the baptism of John came from heaven, because John was a prophet sent by God, just like Balaam in the first reading. That gave John his authority. However, Jesus had even greater authority than John because, as Matthew reminds us at the beginning of his gospel reading, Jesus was not only a prophet but he was Immanuel, God with us. This was the answer to the question of the chief priests and elders addressed to Jesus, ‘What authority have you for acting like this?’ Jesus acted with God’s authority; as risen Lord he continues to act with God’s authority; his authority is in the service of life; he exercises his authority not to oppress us but to bring us into the glorious freedom of the children of God. That is why we need never feel threatened by Jesus’ authority, as the chief priests and elders did. Rather, we willingly submit to it; we submit to the one who is the Life-giver.

Authority can easily become a contentious issue. Who has authority? Who has the right to exercise it? How should authority be exercised? In our time ‘authority’ has become a somewhat negative word. Authority figures get a bad press, sometimes with very good reason. The issue of authority is central to this morning’s gospel reading. Jesus had just performed a somewhat provocative act in the Temple in Jerusalem, driving out those who were buying and selling, overturning the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. Those who considered themselves to have authority in the temple understandably demanded to know who gave Jesus the authority to do what he had just done. We know the answer to that question. Jesus was acting on the authority of God. Jesus considered the Temple to be the house of his Father; that gave him all the authority he needed to do what he did. This morning’s gospel reminds us that when it comes to our faith, the ultimate authority is Jesus. We constantly have to submit our lives to God’s Son. All human authority, including human religious authority, is secondary compared to the authority of Jesus. He alone is Lord of our lives. The Lord’s authority is one which shows itself not in dominating others but in serving them. At the last supper, Jesus declared himself to be the Lord and Master of his disciples and, yet, he washed their feet, rendering them what would have been considered a demeaning service. He was showing them and us how authority in his name is to be exercised.

The question that Jesus is asked by the religious leaders in today’s gospel reading follows on from his cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem, ‘What authority have you for acting like this?’ They considered themselves to have authority in the Temple and they certainly had not given Jesus permission to do what he did, driving out all who were selling and buying in the Temple, overturning the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. Jesus did not give a direct answer to their question. However, the attentive reader of Matthew’s gospel knows where Jesus gets his authority. From the very first chapter of this gospel we are told that one of Jesus’ names is Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us’. God is present in a unique way in Jesus, and that is why Jesus has such authority in God’s house, the Temple. Because Jesus is God with us, Jesus knows what is in keeping with God’s will and what is not. He clearly saw that the way the Temple was being run was not in accordance with God’s will. We are drawing ever closer to the feast of the birth of Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us. We celebrate the birth of this child because we recognize that he came to reveal God’s will for our lives by all that he said and did. He not only reveals God’s will for our lives; he also empowers us to live in this way by pouring the Holy Spirit into our hearts.

This morning’s gospel reading follows on immediately after the portrayal of Jesus cleansing the Temple in Jerusalem, driving out those who were selling and buying in the Temple precincts and overturning the tables of the money changers. It is not surprising that those who were responsible for what happens in the Temple, the chief priests and the elders, should ask Jesus the question, ‘What authority have you for acting like this? Who gave you this authority?’ We know the answer to this question. Because Jesus is Emmanuel, ‘God-with-us’, his authority comes from God. Jesus, however, does not answer their question directly. He recognizes that the question of the chief priests and elders is not a genuine question, in the sense of a question that arises from a real desire to know the truth. It is an accusing question. Very shortly the same chief priests and elders will seek to arrest Jesus with a view to handing him over to Pilate, the Roman governor. We will shortly be celebrating the feast of Christmas. At the centre of this feast is a new born child. This morning’s gospel reminds us that this vulnerable child comes to us on the authority of God. The authority of God stands behind this child. In receiving this child, we receive God who sent him. The life this child will live is stamped with the authority of God. That is the reason why we take so seriously all that this child went on to say and do. We recognize that God is speaking to us through his words and deeds, through his birth, his life, his death and resurrection. We are happy to submit to his will for our lives because he gives expression to the life-giving authority of God.

Jesus is asked many questions in the course of the gospels. Most of the time, he gives a clear and discerning answer to the questions he is asked. Occasionally, he seems reluctant to give an answer, especially when the person asking the question is closed or hostile to all he stands for. In today’s gospel reading, Jesus does not answer the question of the elders of the people, ‘What authority have you for acting like this?’ We might ask, ‘acting like what?’ Jesus had recently drove out all who were selling and buying in the temple, overturning the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves, declaring that the guardians of the Temple had turned God’s house of prayer into a den of robbers. These were provocative actions and words. The question of the elders was a valid one, ‘What authority stands behind such words and deeds?’ The response of Jesus to their questions brings to the surface the elders’ refusal to take the ministry of John the Baptist seriously. If they were hostile to his ministry, they will inevitably be even more hostile to Jesus’ ministry. Jesus sees no point in giving a direct answer to their question regarding his authority. We know the answer to the elders’ question. Jesus was in his Father’s house and he was acting there with the authority of God’s Son. He was declaring by his deeds and words that the Temple was no longer serving God’s purpose but was serving the interests of those who ran the Temple. The gospel reading poses a question to us all, ‘Whose purposes am I serving by what I do or fail to do, the purposes of God or my own self-interested purposes?’ ‘Whose kingdom am I working to further, God’s kingdom or my own personal kingdom?’ We are each temples of the Spirit and we always stand in need of the Lord’s renewing and reforming zeal.

As we draw nearer to the feast of Christmas, cribs will start appearing in our homes and in our churches. At the centre of the crib is a vulnerable baby, the son of Mary and Joseph. We recognize this baby as also the Son of God. He would come to realize at an early age that his heavenly Father was a greater authority in his life than his earthly father, Joseph. Jesus was always about God his Father’s business. He was always doing God’s work and, as a result, people recognized that he acted and spoke with great authority, the authority of God. In the gospel reading, the chief priests who worked in the Temple asked Jesus, ‘What authority have you for acting like this?’ He had just driven out from the Temple all who were selling and buying, overturning the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. The answer to their question was, ‘Jesus’ authority comes from God’. It was God who empowered him, authorized him, to do what he did in the Temple. The religious leaders were unsettled and disturbed by the authoritative way that Jesus spoke and acted. However, those who had little power or status welcomed Jesus’ authoritative presence. They found it liberating. They were amazed at it and glorified God because of it. On one occasion, when the religious leaders questioned Jesus’ authority, the people of Capernaum exclaimed, ‘We have never seen anything like this!’ This is how we are to respond to the authoritative presence of Jesus among us today. God continues to work powerfully and authoritatively through Jesus in a life-giving, healing, liberating way. We readily submit to the authority of Jesus in our lives, to his Lordship, because we recognize that his authority over us is a loving authority that we can trust. It is the kind of wholesome, life-giving, authority that can leave us saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this’.

Another week of cutting back and autumn cleaning. I also started raking the meadow area, for a second time this year. I had to buy some knee pads due to all the cutting down of the Iris unguicularis and next the Hyparrhenia hirta and bulb planting.

Lucien arrived Tuesday and we went to his father’s house for dinner on Wednesday. I have to learn how to play belote. They love playing it and it needs four people to play in two teams.

My trottinette has another flat tire. I tried fixing it and the patch leaked anew. I will try replacing it with a solid tyre. It was very useful especially given the lack of petrol due to the strikes.

On Saturday night Lucien made a delicious chicken pie and a pear and chocolate cake for dessert. André joined us and we had a very nice evening.

We were up early Sunday morning because I ran the Courir pour une Fleur around the Cap d’Antibes. It was my first organised 10k. I ran it in just over 53 minutes and was the 483rd across the finish line. Not bad for never training.

Meanwhile in California, my cousin’s first grandchild (aka first cousin twice removed) was born, Parker Black.
