Dave Okumu & The 7 Generations - I Came From Love
I Came From Love is a tapestry of the Black experience that explores ancestry, the legacy of slavery, what it means to exist in an unjust society, and Okumu’s own family history. On Okumu’s brand new project I Came From Love, he calls on a star-studded array of guests, including Eska, Kwabs, Wesley Joseph, Robert Stillman, Anthony Joseph, Byron Wallen, Raven Bush, and Grace Jones. Rather than release solely under his name, Okumu has chosen the moniker ‘Dave Okumu & the 7 Generations’, which Okumu sees as “my actual ancestors, the ancestors of others, my musical ancestors, and my descendants”.

Writing Research: The Billboard Hot 100, Part 2-Charting
My next question was how many Spotify streams it takes to make it onto the chart. Short answer is it varies a lot from week to week so Spotify streams alone aren't a great predictor of chart position. Some data from recent weeks:
Week of 6/17/23 (Spotify streams as of Tuesday morning 8 am, day of chart release)
Danger [Spider] by Offset & JID is new at 95, has 10,327,745 streams
Hummingbird by Metro Boomin & James Blake is new at 90, 12,701,759 streams - both this and Danger are from spiderman across the spiderverse soundtrack
#92 is new - Peaches & Eggplants by Young Nudy feat. 21 savage, 24,179,960 streams
#1 is Last Night by Morgan Wallen, 19 weeks on chart, 335,202,530 streams
Week of 7/1/23 (Spotify streams as of 6/27/23)
15 songs are new this week, 10 of those are by Gunna including highest ranking - Fukumean at 16, 14,237,066 streams
100 - Bluffin by Gucci Mane & Lil Baby 5,448,770 streams
99 - Classy by Feid x Young Miko 262,602,241 streams
97 - Girl in Mine by Parmalee 28,309,788 streams
Week of 7/15:
Olivia Rodrigo Vampire entered chart at #1, album was released 6/30, checked that Fri or Sat (7/14 or 15) and she was at 190 million streams
Week of 7/22:
26 songs new to top 100, 22 of those are Taylor Swift Speak Now Taylor’s version - so every track
lowest new one (90) is Myke Towers LALA, 97,942,156 streams (album released 3/23)
82 Shake Sumn DaBaby 29,915,192 streams (single released 5/5)
highest one is I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) 38,723,925 streams (album released 7/7)
Week of 7/29:
(most of Speak Now dropped back off of chart but 5 songs remain+3 others so she has 8 total)
12 new songs in top 100 including #1-Seven-Jung Kook 154,295,788 streams
#2-Try That In a Small Town-Jason Aldean 9,585,662
92-Quema-Ryan Castro x Pe$o Pluma 12,276,220

This week I followed some of the songs on Spotify's New Music Friday playlist and pulled daily streaming counts for the first 21 songs for the entire week (stopped when the playlist switched over to the next week's new songs). Here's Heartbroken's daily counts:

[Album+Video] Dave Okumu & The 7 Generations mit neuem Album “I Came From Love”!
Tumblr media
Dave Okumu & The 7 Generations kündigen das neue Album “I Came From Love“ für den 14.
youtube
Okumu erklärt die Handlung des Albums wie folgt: “The narrative of this record emerged in tandem with the origin of its musical journey, through a rumination on survival, ancestry and heritage. The account of the young west African girl who was transported to South Carolina in 1756 and sold to the slave owner Elias Ball and the subsequent unearthing and presentation of her story to her descendants became an emblematic framework for these songs, opening doors to many aspects of the diasporic experience.”
Die vier Kapitel lauten: “You Survived So I Might Live” [tracks 1-4] “The Intolerable Suffering Of (The) Other” [5-8] “Seduced By Babylon” [9-11] “Cave Of Origins” [12-14]

Tracklist “I Came From Love”: 01. Things ft. Grace Jones 02. 7 Generations 03. Blood Ah Go Run 04. Streets 05. My Negritude 06. The Cost 07. Prison 08. Black Firework 09. Scenes 10. Amnesia 11. Get Out 12. Struggle 13. Eyes On Me 14. Abaka 15. Paradise ft. Grace Jones

Video: The Smile - “Free In the Knowledge”
Tumblr media
Following a lengthy build of anticipation with the singles "You Will Never Work In Television Again", "The Smoke", "Pana-vision", and "Skrting On the Surface", the Smile -- the new band of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood alongside Sons of Kemet’s Tom Skinner -- have announced their debut album’s title and release date. It’s called A Light for Attracting Attention, and arrives May 13th on XL Recordings. With the news comes its latest preview, “Free In the Knowledge”, a beautifully composed atmospheric ballad featuring strings and brass courtesy of the London Contemporary Orchestra and UK jazz players Byron Wallen, Theon and Nathaniel Cross, Chelsea Carmichael, Robert Stillman, and Jason Yarde, speckled with otherworldly orbs. A music video directed by Leo Leigh reckons it with a spiritual awakening in the woods. Set yourself “Free” below...

NEXT GIG  *THIS SATURDAY*
See Clare and Claude at CLF Arts Cafe on Saturday 23rd April 2pm - 5pm
@clfartcafe @theclfartlounge @clarehirstsax @claudedeppaclarehirstband @claudedeppa
CLARE HIRST – SAXOPHONES
Clare was born in Cumbria and studied piano and clarinet until managing to get hold of a saxophone. She moved to York and then to Leeds before eventually making it to London where a successful career in pop music ensued. Having played live and on recordings with artists such as David Bowie, The Communards, Mica Paris, The Bellestars and Maxi Priest, she spent some time working with Mervyn Africa before embarking on a solo career based around her Quartet. Since then she has played with many of the country’s finest jazz musicians including Tony Kofi, Byron Wallen, Don Weller and of course Claude Deppa.
CLAUDE DEPPA – TRUMPET
At the forefront of the African jazz music scene is South African born trumpeter and composer Claude Deppa. His music, dizzyingly eclectic, incorporates African, world, Afro-Cuban, jazz, improvised, soul, funk and European chamber music, all of which he plays with a brilliant and pungent sound. Deppa has performed with a rich array of contemporary international jazz talent, including Dewey Redman, Art Blakey, Carla Bley, Miriam Makeba, Archie Shepp, Courtney Pine, Brotherhood Of Breath and Andy Sheppard.
