Malta Eurovision Song Contest Week 2

Hello and welcome back to my coverage of all things Eurovision. The National Final slowly but surely comes to life for the upcoming 2024 contest again with another batch of 9 songs vying for Malta's spot in the contest.

In case you missed it, Malta has 36 songs that want to go to Sweden in May 2024. The problem (as with any National Final) is that there is room for only one. Last week, Malta started releasing their potential songs, 9 at a time. And they will continue that every Friday until all 36 songs are announced (so another 2 weeks). And I'm here to tell you about some things I noticed in this batch.

While my favorite is still the same as it was last week (Gail Attard, I love your song!), there were quite a few that climbed up to the top of my ranking this week. My favorite this week was Haley Azzopardi with "Tell Me That It's Over" while Franklin Calleja's "Puppet" and Marie Claire's "Fading" along with Mark Portelli's "Just Be" stayed pretty close behind. I'm excited for the next couple of weeks to see which other songs join the party!

Shea Diamond

Shea Diamond (she/her) is an American singer-songwriter whose music fuses elements of soul, hip-hop, R&B, and folk. Raised in Flint, Michigan, Diamond recalls facing harsh resistance to her gender expression: “I got whoopings for walking like a girl, for using the restroom sitting down like a girl." A musician from an early age, Diamond was originally inspired to become a singer by Tina Turner. "Even singing when I was little," she says, "I remember being corrected: ‘Put some bass in your voice.’ It was like robbing me of the only joy I had in this world.”[1] Facing this refusal, Diamond ran away from home as a teen and, at age twenty, robbed a convenience store to pay for gender-affirming surgery, for which she had to serve nearly a decade in men's correctional facilities. She describes having cultivated her musical and activist voices through this experience and wrote one of her most recognizable and best-loved songs, "I Am Her," over the course of it.[2] After her release, she moved to New York City to follow her musical and activist pursuits. After songwriter Justin Tranter saw a video of Diamond performing this song a capella at a trans lives matter rally, she was signed to Asylum Records, through which she produced and released her debut album, Seen It All, in 2018.[3] Diamond's career has taken off since then, seeing her participating in a number of high-profile musical collaborations and headlining pride festivals across the States. Her most recent release, "I Am America," provides the soundtrack for HBO's series, We're Here, and was featured on Billboard's list of top LGBTQ songs of 2020.[4]

Hey there my lovelies,

Welcome back again to my Blog!

Second show for Day 2 was a much anticipated one and from a designer who in Malta does not need any introduction.  Well known for his conscious street-style The Parascandalo show is a highlight during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Malta.

The new collection entitled Vanity Rebels intrigued me very much, to say the least (I did try to score a sneak peek but Marco was being secretive and you will shortly see why! But he did promise and insight after – so stay tuned for that!) .

Right off the bet let me start with saying that I loved the fact that he expanded into more feminine outfits yaasss (Side note: Marco I need that 4-pointed skirt -LOVE LOVE LOVE).  The whole collection was amazing from ruffled and shirt dresses, which contrasted nicely with the sportier track pants and hoodies.  I loved the very interesting decontructed denim trousers.  Needles to say the logos tees made an appearance that obviously had a great impact on the audience…  that ‘Ejja minn hemm’ – brilliant idea. Another favourite of mine was the patched, handpainted and embroidered denim jackets.

Hair and makeup rounded up nicely the whole collection with some very interesting hair styles and vibrant makeup to complement the theme.  Stepping away from previous collections monochrome theme, Marco pushed his boundaries to give is a rebellious collection, clearly indicating a sense of freedom and why not even vanity 🙂
