Natural Disaster Alert Update - U. S. Embassy Guatemala City, Guatemala - (June 12, 2018)

Location: Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango, Escuintla

Event: Fuego Volcano continues to emit currents of hot gas and volcanic matter towards the Chimaltenango area based on the direction of winds as of June 12 at 7:35 a.m.

Guatemalan authorities discourage visiting closed areas. Avalanches have produced ash columns, which may result in ash fall in affected areas over the next several days.

The following roads remain closed to all Embassy personnel for both personal and official travel:

· CA-2 between Escuintla and Cocales. Traveling on rivers and bridges along this particular route is very hazardous. The link below shows the current flow for Rio Pantaleon, located near CA-2:

Actualización - Alerta de desastre natural – Embajada de Estados Unidos en la Ciudad de Guatemala, Guatemala – (12 de junio 2018)

Ubicación: Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango y Escuintla

Situación: hasta el 12 de junio a las 7:35 a.m. el Volcán de Fuego continúa emitiendo flujos piroclásticos con dirección hacia el área de Chimaltenango, de acuerdo con la dirección del viento.

Las autoridades guatemaltecas no recomiendan visitar las áreas cercanas. Las avalanchas han producido columnas de ceniza, las cuales puede resultar en caída de ceniza en las áreas afectadas durante los siguientes días.

Las siguientes rutas permanecen prohibidas para todo el personal de la embajada; tanto para viajes personales como oficiales:

· CA-2 entre Escuintla y Cocales. Es muy peligroso cruzar ríos y puentes, a lo largo de esta ruta en particular. Castelo de São Jorge

El Castelo de São Jorge és situat al turó de Lisboa que porta el mateix nom. Fou un excel·lent baluard per a les successives civilitzacions que es van assentar al que avui és la capital de Portugal. Des del segle VI abans de Crist, fenicis, grecs i cartaginesos van deixar-hi la seva empremta, fins que els romans s’hi van instal·lar i la van batejar com Olissipo.

En el context de les lluites entre romans i els pobladors de la regió, els lusitans, en què el cabdill Viriat va acabar assassinat i un gran nombre dels seus seguidors es van immolar a la llunyana Numància, el cònsol Dècim Juni Brut va fer servir la ciutat com a base de les seves legions per dominar l’occident de la Península Ibèrica, llavors denominada genèricament Hispania.

Una vegada sotmesa tota Lusitània, la ciutat adquireix el nom de Felicitas Julia pels volts de l’any 60 abans de Crist i va entrar en una època de prosperitat que es va perllongar fins el segle V, quan les primeres invasions bàrbares de la Península van fer estralls per tot arreu.

Primer van conquerir Lisboa els sueus, que després es van veure desplaçats pels visigots, que van crear un regne que s’estenia des del sud de la Península fins al nord dels Pirineus, deixant inicialment als sueus un reducte al nord-oest de la ja desapareguda Hispania romana, que va arribar momentàniament fins a Lisboa.

Quan els francs van estendre’s per l’actual França, van fer desplaçar-se més cap al sud als visigots, que van aconseguir fer fora de la Península als bizantins, successors dels romans d’Occident a força regions de la Mediterrània, i assimilar el regne dels sueus, al segle VI. Del control de Lisboa pels visigots, no queda gaire rastre.

A començaments del segle VIII arriba una altra conquesta a la regió de Lisboa, aquesta vegada del sud, de l’altra banda de les Columnes d’Hèrcules, l’actual Estret de Gibraltar. Els àrabs havien emprés una campanya de conquestes poc més d’un segle abans i s’havien estés per Orient Pròxim i el Nord d’Àfrica des de Mesopotàmia fins a l’Atlàntic.

El 716 apareix a l’història Al-Ushbuna, la nova denominació de Lisboa i pren sentit el malnom que rep el Castelo de São Jorge, el Castelo dos Mouros, una denominació freqüent a tota la Península per referir-se als invassors provinents de l’antiga província romana de Mauretania.

A finals del segle VIII, els reis cristians que s’havien refugiat a les muntanyes arran de la mar Cantàbrica ja feien ràzzies que arribaven fins a Lisboa, como la del 796 per part d’Alfons II d’Astúries. A aquestes s’afegiren les d’un poble que faria tremolar les costes de tota Europa a finals del primer mil·leni després de Crist, els víkings o normands, que hi arribaren el 844 i el 966.

En aquesta època, el castell era una alcassaba, un castell de característiques andalusines i ja estava emmurallat amb nombroses torres i murs força gruixuts. El 1147 va caure en mans del rei portugués Alfons I, encara que va patir setges andalusins el 1179 i el 1183, que va ressistir amb èxit.

El 1255, en convertir-se Lisboa en capital de Portugal, el Palau Reial s’hi instal·la dins del seu recinte, que es va veure danyat per successius terratrèmols als segles XIII i XIV. No obstant va ser un bastió davant dels atacs castellans a finals del segle XIV.

Més endavant, als segles XVI i XVII va tornar a patir nous terratrèmols, que van fer-lo entrar en decadència, quan els reis de la restauració que va posar fi a la ocupació espanyola van acabar abandonant-lo per instal·lar-se a palaus més a prop de la riba del riu Tejo.

El terratrèmol de 1755, que va destruir Lisboa, va sentenciar-lo, en iniciar-se una degradació que va arribar fins a mitjans del segle XX, quan es va començar una restauració que va estendre’s ben bé durant mig segle.

The Fort of São João Baptista das Berlengas, or simply known as the Fort of the Berlengas, is located off western coast of Portugal, on the largest island of the archipelago of the Berlengas, in the municipality of Peniche in Oeste region. The fortification belonged to a group of defensive military structures meant to protect the municipality located on the coast.

The Berlengas archipelago is a group of small islands 10 to 15 kilometres (6.2–9.3 miles) off the Portuguese coast, west of the town of Peniche in Oeste region. These islands were traditionally known to British mariners as "the Burlings". The only habitable island is the largest island, Berlenga Grande, although there is no permanent habitation there at present. The other islands are grouped into two groups of islets, the Estelas Islets and the Farilhões-Forcados Islets.

Human occupation on Berlenga Grande dates back to antiquity: the islands are referred to in Ptolemy's Geography as Λονδοβρίς (Londobris). Much later it was referred to as the island of Saturno by Roman geographers, and was visited successively by Muslims, Vikings and pirates/privateers from England and France.

In 1513, with the support of Queen Eleanor of Viseu, monks from the Order of São Jerónimo established a settlement on the island to offer assistance to navigation and victims of frequent shipwrecks. The monastery founded there (the Monastery of the Misericórdia da Berlenga), remained until the 16th century, when disease, lack of communication (due to constant inclement weather) and regular assaults by pirates and privateers (from England and France), forced the monks to abandon their service on the island.

After the Portuguese Restoration War, during the reign of King John IV, the Council of War determined that the demolition of the monastery ruins, and the use of their rocks to build a coastal defense would help protect the coastal settlements; the Fort of São João Baptista das Berlengas was constructed from the remnants of the monastery ruins. By 1655, it had already, during its construction, resisted an assault by three Barbary coast pirates.

The island's lighthouse (dubbed Duke of Braganza by locals) was constructed in 1841. In the 20th century a solar panel was installed in the lighthouse's 29 metres (95 ft) column, providing a 50 kilometres (31 mi) field of vision.

The International Coordinating Council of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB), meeting in Dresden (Germany) from 28 June to 1 July, while adding 18 new sites, included the Berlengas to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR): in a statement on 30 June 2011, the list of classified reserves were presented.

El Brull by esta_ahi Església de Sant Martí del Brull Als peus del turó on s'alçava el castell del Brull, trobem l'església de Sant Martí. L'església actual és el resultat de grans modificacions efectuades sobre el volum inicial. És de nau única amb absis semicircular a llevant, tot i que originalment tenia capçalera trevolada, els dos absis laterals del transsepte van ser substituïts per capelles de planta quadrada. A l'exterior, l'absis té decoració d'arcuacions, que emmarquen unes finestres cegues, en grups de tres, entre lesenes. A l'interior mostra cinc nínxols semicirculars separats per columnes adossades i tres finestres de doble esqueixada. L'absis és cobert amb volta de quart d'esfera. La volta de canó de la nau té llunetes i està reforçada amb arcs torals. L'interior ha estat transformat en època barroca, mentre que a l'exterior manté la decoració d'arcuacions entre lesenes als murs laterals, malgrat el sobrealçament que patí la nau. A la façana de ponent encara són visibles les lesenes, però ha perdut les arcuacions pel nou perfil de cornisa barroca. La porta principal actual és en aquesta façana. L'original s'obria en el mur de migdia i estava protegida per un atri, del qual només es conserven els pilars i els arcs on es recolzava la coberta. A l'angle nord-oest s'alça el campanar quadrat el 1791. En el Museu Episcopal de Vic es conserven les pintures murals al fresc, datades a principis del segle XII, que decoraven l'absis i que foren arrencades l'any 1935. També custodien dos candelers de ferro forjat del segle XII i una tapa d'un relligat hispanoàrab. L'església de Sant Martí fou la parròquia de Seva fins que es va crear la del Brull. Es troba documentada com a parròquia ja al segle XI (1029). Se sap que va ser consagrada entre els anys 1048 i 1060 pel bisbe vigatà Guillem de Balsareny. El 1062 va ser dotada amb delmes pel vescomte Ramon Folc I i la seva muller Ermesenda. Entre les nombroses reformes que ha sofert, en destaquen la construcció del campanar i la modificació del portal d'accés, dels anys 1791 i 1588 respectivament. Els seus murs també varen ser repujats. The Weekend Warrior Home Edition 8/14/20 – SPUTNIK, THE SILENCING, FREELAND, SPREE, THE BAY OF SILENCE

Another week, another batch of movies to get through in hopes there’s one or two worth writing about… and then writing about all of them anyway. (Sigh). I hope there are people reading this, at least. If so, go to the bottom of this column and drop me a line!

Before I get to this week’s movies, I want to give a special congratulatory shout-out to the wonderful Melanie Addington, because this is the final week of the 17th annual Oxford Film Festival. I have to say as someone who regularly covers a couple other bigger festivals, she’s done such an amazing job pivoting to the virtual world, to the point where what usually is a five-day very localized festival turned into a nationwide digital festival that’s been stretched out for 16 weeks! Those bigger festivals like SXSW and Tribeca could take a lesson from Oxford, because what usually are two highly-anticipated festivals every year became a whole lot of nothing thanks to COVID. It’s like they gave up, rolled over and just died. Oxford, meanwhile, has done Zoom QnAs with a lot of the filmmakers and casts from its films to help maintain the community feeling that makes the festival such a great destination for those in-the-know. (I haven’t even gotten into the amazing drive-in screenings or the year-round On Demand program they’ve been having over the past couple months.)

Anyway, OFF ends this week with the world-premiere of a movie that was supposed to open at SXSW, Mario Furlani and Kate McLean’s debut feature FREELAND, starring Krisha Fairchild from Trey Shults’ movie, Krisha. Freeland is a similarly strong indie r drama, this one starring Ms. Fairchild as Davi, a black market marijuana farmer in Humboldt County, Norther California, who sees her way of life changing when she’s forced to go legal after California legalizes marijuana. Instead, these changes might run her out of business. It’s a beautifully-shot (Furlani is also the cinematographer) character drama that spotlights Fairchild giving another memorable performance, surrounded by an equally excellent cast that includes Lily Gladstone from Certain Women. I hope a good distributor like IFC or Magnolia will scoop this up for release, as I think it’s an interesting look into the pot business from a unique perspective. I also think it could do VERY well at the Indie Spirits. You can watch Freeland for a couple more days (at least) with a QnA with cast and crew on Thursday night right here.

Also, check out the Eventive site for the final week line-up which includes a TON of shorts. (Be mindful, that some of the content, specifically The Offline Playlist, will only be watchable if you’re in Mississippi.)

Also starting this week on Thursday is the 5th Annual Dallas-based Women Texas Film Festival (aka WTxFF), also going virtual this year, which I don’t really know that much about, but it’s run by my friend, Justina Walford, and she generally knows her shit when it comes to movies. Its mission pledge is right there in the title, but all the movies in the festival have a woman in at least one creative role. You can check out the full list of movies playing here, although they are geoblocked to Texas unfortunately. The festival’s series of panels and QnAs, though, can be watched anywhere in the United States, and those should be good.

Let’s get to the regular releases….

This week’s “Featured Flick” is Russian filmmaker Egor Abramenko’s SPUTNIK (IFC Midnight), a sci-fi thriller taking place in 1983 after an incident the Russian spaceship Orbit-4 that leaves one of the cosmonauts in detention after the death of his commander. Oksana Akinshina (who was in The Bourne Supremacy) plays Tatyana Klimova, a psychologist sent to study the surviving cosmonaut, Konstantin Veshnyakov (Pyotr Fyodorov), and she learns that he brought back something with him from space.

I was a little worried about this movie, only because the opening reminded me so much of my experience watching the original Russian film Solaris so many years ago. Its quizzical opening in space leads to Akinshina’s character being introduced in a way that’s so slow and talkie that I worried about what I should expect from the movie as a whole. Thankfully, about 20 minutes in, we meet the creature that’s seemingly come down from space inside the cosmonaut, and it immediately changes the very nature of the film.

I don’t want to spoil too much about why the movie gets so interesting, because it’s not non-stop creature kills, although the movie does get quite exciting every time this creature emerges, particularly when it’s being fed various Russian convicts. Even so, the film always remains fairly cerebral about the creature’s origins and its relationship to the cosmonaut, who abandoned a child before his fateful space accident. Adding to the grey area about whether Tatyana should ally herself with Konstantin is her supervising officer, played by Fedor Bondarchuk, who clearly wants to use the creature as a weapon, knowing that both Konstantin and his “other” only trusts Tatyana, so they all need her.

Needless to say, the creature design is absolutely fantastic, and the comparisons this movie is going to get to Alien are quite apt, because the creature is on par with the xenomorph. I only wish I could see it better since it only comes out in the dark, and watching a movie that plays with light like this one does is just not conducive to watching on a laptop. (In fact, if you’re in a position to see Sputnik in a theater, even a drive-in, and you’re not averse to subtitles, I’d recommend going that route.)

Sputnik might fool you at first into expecting something in the vein of the original Solaris. In fact, it’s more in line with The Invisible Man, a creature feature that explores one man’s inner demons through the lens of science fiction. This probably would have been a better Venom movie than the one we actually got.

Jamie Lannister himself, Nicolaj Costar-Waldau stars in THE SILENCING (Saban Films) the English language debut of Belgian filmmaker Robin Pront (The Ardennes), a dark action-thriller set in the rural area of Echo Falls where a serial killer is hunting and killing young women and girls.

Robin Pront’s The Silencing is usually the type of movie I’d enjoy, if only I haven’t seen the exact same movie so many times before. I wasn’t sure whether it’s Costar-Waldau’s alcoholic hunter Rayburn Swanson, whose daughter disappeared years earlier, or it was cause of Annabelle Wallis, the town’s sheriff, Alice Gustafson, whose troubled brother Brooks (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) is caught up enough in the towns drug issues to act as the movie’s second-act red herring. Throw in the Native American aspect of the movie, and you’re right back at Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River, which was just a much better version of this movie all around.

Adding to the lack of originality is the fact that there are now so many television shows about serial killers, which is a shame since Pront’s previous film showed so much promise but also suffered from similar issues. Costar-Waldau gives a credible performance, maybe slightly better than Wallis, but we’ve seen this movie so many times before that even trying to throw in a twist or two goes awry since no one ever commits. The major plot twist about halfway in has an opportunity to change everything but instead, it’s negated mere minutes later.

Slow and grim, The Silencing suffers from being an overused genre that’s been done so much better before. It’s already been playing on DirecTV but will be in select theaters, On Demand and Digital this Friday.

Next up is the thriller THE BAY OF SILENCE (Vertical Entertainment), starring Claes Bang from The Square as Will, whose girlfriend and baby momma Rosalind (Olga Kurylenko) vanishes with their twin daughters and baby son, and her father Milton (Brian Cox) seems to know more than he’s telling. The film is written and produced by British actor Caroline Goodall (who has a small role in this one), adapted from Lisa St. Aubin de Teran's 1986 novel and directed by Dutch filmmaker Paula van der Oest, who has made some decent films like Black Butterflies and the Oscar-nominated Zus & Zo.

We meet Will and Ros as they’re having a romantic moment in the titular bay in Luguria, Italy, and after a few odd occurrences, Ros vanishes with her twin girls and the baby boy they had together. It doesn’t take long for Will to find her, but she seems to have gone insane, and Will needs to find out what happened.

Honestly, it’s not worth getting too deep into this movie’s plot, not so much due to spoilers, but more because there are just so many WTF moments that happen out of the blue, and then the next moment they’re forgotten. For whatever reason, the movie just doesn’t allow any of the tension or mystery to build, and even the most horrificly grim plot turn is handled so matter-of-factly.

There’s no question that van der Oest is a fine filmmaker, something you can tell from the general look of the movie, but the pacing and tons is generally all over the place as nothing happens and then a LOT happens. Bang’s decent performance is countered by a lot of overacting from Kulryenko, and while Cox plays a much bigger role in the story than you might expect, his scenes do very little to elevate the film’s plodding tone.

The Bay of Silence is a highly uneven and bland thriller that tries to offer a twist a minute with very of them ever really connecting, instead feeling grim and tedious and like a lot of wasted potential. Oddly, it feels more original than The Silencing above but just doesn’t come together even as well.

Where do I even begin with Eugene Kotlyarenko’s SPREE (RLJE Films) except that it stars Stranger Thing’s Joe Keery as Kurt Kunkle “of Kunkle’s World,” a social media vlog where he tries to get viewer’s attention and likes. He finally decides to go on a killing spree (get it?) while picking up passengers in his car ride service Spree (see?), until he encounters a stand-up comic (Sasheer Zamata) who fights back.

Listen, I understand fine why a movie like Spree might get made, since it’s meant to be relevant to the youngsters, who are much like Kurt, totally obsessed with their own social media and getting attention. The idea of some kid becoming a serial killer just to draw more attention to himself is not exactly incredible. I found Kurt so annoying that I didn’t think I would ever be able to have any empathy for him, and I was right.

We basically watch Kurt driving around and killing various people, most of them pretty horrible, granted, but Keery comes off more like a bargain-basement Christian Bale in American Psycho. Zamata is generally the best part of the movie, which is why the last third starts to get past some of the movie’s earlier problems to become more about an actual influencer showing Kurt how it’s done. (Zamata’s “SNL” castmate Kyle Mooney can’t really do much to make their scenes together funnier, since it’s just another sleazeball hitting on her.)

David Arquette also has a few funny scenes as Kurt’s father, but what’s probably gonna throw a lot of people off and make or break the movie is that so much of it is made to look like it was filmed on a smartphone, complete with running commentary from the viewers that you’re supposed to read, and presumably enjoy? Me, I just found it annoying.

Spree is gonna be one of those love-it-or-hate-it movies depending on which side of the age gap you’re on. To me, it just seemed way too obvious and not something I could possibly recommend to anyone over 19.

Okay… Documentary time!

I really wanted to like Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss’ BOYS STATE (A24/Apple TV+), which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and received Special Jury Prize at SXSW Film Festival, but it’s a pollical doc that deals with a subject that just didn’t interest me very much. It follows a thousand teen boys from Texas who come together to form a government from the ground up, and that’s the problem right there. The fact this is all about guys. I just couldn’t get interested enough to watch the whole thing since it seemed obvious how it would turn out. Boys State was supposed to open in select cities last month but instead, it will be on Apple TV+ Friday after getting a few drive-in preview screenings, cause that’s just the way things are going these days.

Willa Kammerer’s Starting at Zero: Reimagining Education in America (Saul Zaentz Charitable Foundation/Abramorama), which will open in Virtual Cinema Friday after a Virtual Premiere tonight. It seems very timely, as it deals with investing in high-quality early child education. Just as timely is Muta’Ali Muhammad’s Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn (HBO Documentary Films), which premieres on HBO tonight, looking at the events around the 1989 murder of teenager Yusuf Hawkins by a group of white men in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Erik Nelson’s doc Apocalypse ’45 (Discovery/Abramorama), which will be in theaters this Friday and on Discovery over Labor Day weekend, is about the end of World War II, using never-before-seen footage with narration by 24 men who were there for it.

Quiver Distribution has two movies out this Friday, both which could probably be seen as young adult movies – not really a genre I like very much, so your mileage may vary?

ENDLESS from director Scott Speer (Midnight Sun) is a romantic drama starring Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse) as graphic novelist Riley, whose boyfriend, Nick Hamilton’s Chris gets stranded in limbo after he’s killed in a car crash. Taking the blame for his death on herself, Riley struggles to find ways to reconnect with Chris in the afterlife.

I wasn’t sure if this movie would be for me, since I’m not a very big fan of young adult movies generally. So many of them have hard-to-believe high-concept premises involving two lovelorn teens – Midnight Sun being a good example. Unlike so many of these movies, Endless isn’t based on a popular book, and I was a little worried about Speer’s skills as a director and whether he could avoid turning this into a very obvious teen version of Ghost. There’s a little bit of that but on a whole, the movie isn’t a complete waste of time. For instance, Shipp is decent in this sort of dramatic role, probably better than Hamilton, and it avoids getting too weepy thanks to DeRon Horton’s animated Jordan, who befriends Chris in limbo and quickly becomes the movie’s frequent saving grace.

Otherwise, the movie feels like any other soppy teen romantic drama, being very predicable with way too much overacting, particularly from Fammke Janssen as Chris’ Mom. Even though the relationship between Shipp and Hamilton works fine, unless you’re on board with the whole concept of the latter spending the entire film as a spirit, you’re going to have a hard time fully enjoying the movie.

In Bobby Roth’s PEARL, Larsen Thompson plays the title character, a 15-year-old piano prodigy whose mother Helen (Sarah Carter from The Flash) is murdered by her stepfather (Nestor Carbonell). She’s sent to live with Jack Wolf (Anthony LaPaglia), an unemployed film director, who used to be one of her mother’s ex-lovers, who also might be Pearl’s father. I know! Let’s spend an entire movie going back and forth trying to figure it out, okay?

I don’t have a ton to say about this movie, but if for some reason, you want to watch it just cause you’re a fan of Carter from The Flash, you should know that she appears in the movie via a series of black and white flashbacks to show her relationship with Jack, but those might be the best part of a very bad movie.

Thompson just isn’t a very solid actor to carry this, and Roth must have pulled a lot of favors to get this movie made ‘cause it wasn’t financed based on the script. Her relationship with LaPaglia just seems kinda creepy. Things just gets worse and worse, especially when Pearl goes to school and the other girls act like they’re in prison. There’s also Barbara Williams as Pearl’s alcoholic grandmother – the fun just never begins, does it?

At its worst, Pearl comes across like a Lifetime movie – not the first time I’ve used this statement this year and probably not the last. It’s just very dull and not a very good movie; LaPaglia is way too good an actor who deserves better than this.

Also on VOD this week is Kevin Tran’s Dark End of the Street (Gravitas Ventures), an indie horror movie involving a community in the suburbs plagued by someone who is killing the residents’ pets. This wasn’t a terrible movie but I had a hard time getting past the general premise about killing pets, so it was hard to get into what Tran tried to do in terms of putting a twist on a tried-and-true horror genre. Maybe I’ll give this another try after finishing this column.

Also, Ben Galland’s action-comedy Gripped: Climbing the Killer Pillar (1091) follows Rose (Megan Kesley), a L.A. gym climber who falls for rugged outdoorsman Bret (Kaiwi Lyman) as they embark on a trip to climb the “Killer Pillar” in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, only to get caught on a cliff edge.

The Metrograph’s Live Screening Series is continuing with a great line-up over the rest of August with the Satoshi Kon Retrospective continuing with Millennium Actress playing until midnight tonight, plus Masaaki Yuasa & Koji Morimoto’s popular 2004 film Mind Game starting Wednesday night at 8pm. Claire Denis’ Trouble Every Day (2001) will screen on Friday at 8pm, and then Monday, Jenna Bliss’ animated The People’s Detox (2018) will join the screening library. To become a digital member, it’s only $5 a month or $50 for a year, which is a great deal for the amount of movies you see.

Film at Lincoln Center’s Virtual Cinema will stream Paulo Rocha’s 1963 film Change of Life starting Friday while Film Forum will stream Weiner Holzemer’s doc Martin Margiella: In His Own Words about the fashion designer, as well as Bert Stern’s Jazz on a Summer’s Day which is a 1959 documentary about the fashion photographer filming the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival with the likes of Louis Armstrong, Hoagy Carmichael, Mahalia Jackson, Thelonious Monk and many more.

Apparently, Netflix has a new movie out on Friday called Project Power, starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but I received ABSOLUTELY NADA about it from Netflix, so this is all you get. Watch out, Netflix, there are a lot of streaming options out there now!

Speaking of drive-ins (which I was WAY up there), on Wednesday, you can catch the latest in Amazon Studios “A Night at the Drive In” series. “Movies to Make You Open Your Eyes,” which will screen Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing and Jordan Peele’s Get Out.

Considered to be one of the most imposing Roman ruins, Diocletian’s palace is certainly the main attraction of the city of Split, Croatia. These ruins are some of the most valuable surviving buildings of the Roman era on the Adriatic coast.

Emperor Diocletian, who voluntarily gave up the throne of the Roman Empire, in the turn of the 4th century CE built the palace and after his retirement on May1, 305 settled here, on the beach, in the Illyrian province of Rome. Today the Illyrian province is part of Croatia.

The so-called palace was a massive structure and contains not only the palace itself but also buildings, intended for housing military garrison.

The whole complex occupied around 30,000 square meters. Today these ruins lie in the heart of the city of Split in Croatia.

The ancient fortress has become the old town of Split, with numerous shops, cafes, restaurants and also apartments, located in the old buildings on narrow streets of the palace/fortress.

Around 3000 people live on the territory of Diocletian’s palace today.

Emperor Diocletian had a wish to enter his palace on a ship, without leaving the deck. Today, it is hard to imagine that the lower tier of Diocletian’s palace once was covered with water, and the ship of the Emperor was usually slowly passing between the columns and stopping among the vaulted rooms of the lower tier.

The windows in the lower rooms of the palace are located near the ceiling – in case the water would rise – and even during the day the illumination here is weak, uneven. Over time, the sea receded, and a city emerged around the palace.

Not much is left in Split from the era of Diocletian – only the palace, the remains of walls and gates.

The rest of the old city is covered with white stone buildings of different periods and styles. The palace was built from local limestone and white marble.

The palace has a form of an irregular rectangle with numerous towers on the western, northern, and eastern facades. The southern façade has no towers, because it was rising directly from the waters of the sea. The design of the palace is a mix of villa and castrum architecture. The Emperor’s apartments were located on the southern part of the complex – along the seaside.

Only the foundation and lower floors of these apartments have survived to our days. Diocletian’s octagonal mausoleum (later was reconstructed into a Christian church – one of the oldest in the world) and 3 temples were also located in the southern part of the palace. One of the temples was later turned into a baptistery, the other two were destroyed.

On the crossroad of the two main roads of the palace, the so called Peristyle is located. The Peristyle is a rectangular open court decorated with colonnade and intended to become the heart of the palace, where the most powerful Roman citizens were gathering.

The palace had four gates. From the Golden gate on the northern side of the fortress the road to the town of Solin was starting.

The Silver gate was located on the eastern part, the Iron one – on the west, and the Bronze gate was on the south – the sea shore.

The gates themselves, of course, did not survive, but carved stone pillars and arches residues can still be seen on their place.

Here and there in the palace one can find antiques, including three 3500 years old sphinxes, brought to Split from Egypt for the Emperor.

Nowadays, during the day you can often hear music in the palace. But in the evenings the palace is particularly attractive.

When the night falls, the marble and granite columns, topped by Corinthian capitals, are usually illuminated by colorful garlands, and the interiors of the palace are becoming a beautiful scene, where actors in Roman togas are performing with their solemn voices, echoing under the arches of this ancient palace.

Si vas a viajar a Croacia o planeas hacer una ruta por los Balcanes, a buen seguro te interesará visitar Split. ¿Y qué se puede ver o hacer allí? Split, en general, no es de las ciudades más bellas de la Costa Dálmata, pero merece la pena ir aunque sólo sea por una cosa: el fabuloso Palacio Diocleciano, monumento romano que hoy conforma el núcleo antiguo de la ciudad y que fue protegido por la UNESCO en 1979. Además, Split es un buen punto de partida para explorar otros lugares de Dalmacia, como la Isla de Brac, la pequeña Trogir, Sibenik o la riviera de Makarska.

Breve historia de Split y el Palacio de Diocleciano En tiempos de la Antigua Roma, Dalmacia era una provincia del Imperio cuya capital se encontraba en Salona (hoy Solin). En esta ciudad nació en el año 244 a.C. un tal Diocles, hijo de familia humilde que prosperó en el ejército hasta llegar a convertirse, ni más ni menos, en el Emperador Diocleciano. ¿Y qué tiene esto que ver con Split? Cuando Diocleciano llegó a la vejez, tomó la novedosa decisión de abdicar (fue el primer emperador en hacerlo) y se retiró a unos campos ubicados justo al sur de Salona, donde había mandado construir un enorme palacio para disfrutar de sus últimos años. Aquel fue el germen fundacional de Split.

Por sus dimensiones, y por estar amurallado, el Palacio de Diocleciano sirvió como ciudad fortificada durante los siglos siguientes, llegando a albergar hasta 9.000 personas en su interior. La urbe, que fue creciendo en torno al palacio, se conoció como Spalato hasta la I Guerra Mundial, cuando fue rebautizada con su nombre croata. En tantos siglos de historia, Split fue pasando por muchas manos. Venecianos (sobre todo), húngaros, turcos, austriacos o yugoslavos dominaron la ciudad en diferentes épocas, hasta que finalmente Croacia declaró su independencia en 1991. Hoy en día Split es la capital del Dalmacia, la segunda ciudad más poblada del país (tras Zagreb) y alberga uno de los principales puertos del Mediterráneo.

¿Sabías que en el Palacio de Diocleciano se grabaron varias escenas de la serie «Juego de Tronos«? Sigue leyendo y te descubriremos un par de rincones que seguramente recuerdes.

Qué ver en Split Como dijimos, Split en su conjunto no es de las ciudades más bellas de Croacia: la urbe moderna es bastante sosa, incluso fea en algunas zonas, con edificios que recuerdan a su etapa comunista. Sin embargo, tiene una joya excepcional: el Palacio de Diocleciano, que ha sobrevivido en bastante buen estado desde tiempos romanos y que en nuestros días conforma el casco antiguo de la ciudad (recordemos que era enorme, no se trata de un simple edificio). Sólo por esto ya merece la pena invertir un día (o al menos una mañana) en visitar Split.

Interior del Palacio de Diocleciano Ubicado junto al mar Adriático, el Palacio Diocleciano tiene forma rectangular y mide 200 x 160 metros. Tres de sus laterales estaban fortificados y aún se mantienen en pie la mayor parte de las murallas, así como las tres entradas principales. El único lateral no amurallado es el que da al mar. Así pues, el recinto es fácilmente reconocible por sus límites y resulta muy cómodo moverse por su interior, donde el acceso a los vehículos está prohibido. Eso sí, en temporada alta (especialmente en época de cruceros) hay que esquivar turistas a cada paso. Es el precio a pagar por contemplar semejante belleza.

El palacio no es un recinto cerrado, así que no tiene precios ni horarios. En su interior hay viviendas, tiendas, restaurantes y varias callejuelas por las que merece la pena perderse. De hecho, algunos de sus rincones más bellos permanecen relativamente ocultos y no es raro toparse con un patio, pasadizo o plazoleta en el que nadie parece haber reparado. Pero, además de callejear, hay varios lugares que no te debes perder. Por ejemplo, el Peristilo, un gran patio rodeado por columnas de mármol en el corazón del palacio, justo donde se cruzaban el Cardo y el Decumano, avenidas principales de las ciudades romanas.

Frente a la imponente fachada del Peristilo, que daba acceso a los apartamentos imperiales, se suelen dar cita actores vestidos de romano y, según la época, pueden verse pequeñas representaciones teatrales. Si llegas desde el sur (desde el mar) harás tu entrada triunfal atravesando el Vestíbulo, con su enorme cúpula circular. Junto al Peristilo, no puedes perderte la Catedral de San Domnius, un complejo eclesiástico formado por el antiguo mausoleo de Diocleciano (un pequeño edificio de planta octogonal), la iglesia y un enorme campanario al que se puede acceder (previo pago) para obtener unas buenas vistas del casco antiguo de Split y del Mar Adriático.

Para completar la visita a esta parte del palacio te recomendamos dar un paseo por las galerías subterráneas, usadas en la serie «Juego de Tronos» para ubicar diferentes espacios de Meereen, como la mazmorra en la que Daenerys encierra a sus dragones. Atravesando la Puerta Aenea, se accede a los túneles que en tiempos del Emperador sirvieron como almacenes. En la actualidad, allí se apilan un buen número de tiendecitas donde puedes comprar souvenirs o artesanía local. Además, hay dos zonas de pago con exhibiciones de vestigios romanos, antiguas salas del palacio, maquetas, etc.

Una vez explorado el conjunto central, puedes moverte hacia el Oeste para admirar el pequeño Templo de Júpiter, convertido en baptisterio. Y si quieres alargar la visita al interior del palacio, hay un par de museos a los que puedes entrar: el Muzej Grada (museo de historia de la ciudad) y el Etnografski Muzej (museo etnográfico). Pero, recuerda, reserva algo de tiempo para perderte un rato entre los callejones del palacio. Y otro apunte para fans de «Juego de Tronos»: Papalićeva es una de las calles donde se rodaron escenas de la serie, como la famosa revuelta de los esclavos, por ejemplo.

Puertas del Palacio y extramuros Como dijimos, aún se conservan las principales puertas de entrada al palacio. La más impresionante es la del norte, la Puerta de Oro. En tiempos del Emperador, solo él y su familia podían usarla, especialmente para viajar a la cercana Salona. Los nichos -hoy vacíos- mostraban esculturas de cada uno de los famosos Tetrarcas, una forma de gobierno instaurada por Diocleciano. A espaldas de la puerta, puedes ver la enorme estatua del obispo Gregorio de Nin, realizada por el famoso escultor Ivan Meštrović antes de la II Guerra Mundial. La tradición dice que hay frotarle un dedo del pie para tener buena suerte.

Al Este, parapetada tras decenas de puestos callejeros, se encuentra la Puerta de Plata. Allí pueden verse los arcos de la muralla original, así como restos de las torres de defensa. Cruzándola se accede al Decumano, que aún conserva buena parte del pavimento original. Por último, al Oeste, al otro lado del Decumano, se ubica la Puerta de Hierro, enclavada entre viviendas y adosada a una pequeña iglesia (s. XI) cuyo campanario sobresale por encima de los edificios contiguos. Su reloj es todo un símbolo de la ciudad, ya que curiosamente marca el tiempo en formato «24 horas» en vez de tener los 12 digítos habituales.

Desde la Puerta de Hierro, dando la espalda al palacio, se accede a la Plaza del Pueblo, una de las más importantes de la ciudad. En tiempos medievales fue el centro neurálgico de Split. Entre los edificios destaca el antiguo Ayuntamiento, la vieja librería «Morpurgo» (conservada como en 1861), el Café Central (histórico lugar de encuentro de intelectuales y artistas) y los palacetes de varias familias nobles. Pero quizá la plaza más bella es la Plaza de las Frutas, que se encuentra un poco más al sur, en dirección al mar. Sobresalen la torre veneciana octogonal del s.XV, perteneciente a la antigua muralla, un palacio del siglo XVII con fachada barroca y, en el centro de la plaza, la estatua del célebre escritor Marko Marulić, también obra de Ivan Meštrović.
