Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has for more than a decade claimed on mandatory financial disclosure forms that he received significant income from a defunct real estate firm, Ginger, Ltd., Partnership, that has been shuttered since 2006.
This news comes only 10 days after ProPublica reported that the justice has received — but failed to disclose — hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of gifted vacations from conservative billionaire and Nazi enthusiast Harlan Crow. The billionaire also owns the home where Thomas’ mother lives, which Crow purchased from Thomas and members of his family before embarking on major renovations to the property. Thomas failed to disclose the sale of the home on financial forms, leaving blank the field for reporting the identity of a buyer in any private transactions above $1,000, including real estate. The revelations have led some to question whether Thomas was intentionally hiding his financial relationship with Crow.
On Sunday, The Washington Post revealed that in addition to not disclosing luxurious vacations and the real estate deal involving Crow, Thomas also erroneously reported hundreds of thousands of dollars in rental income from property that his wife Ginni Thomas’ parents developed in Nebraska. In financial disclosures, Thomas reported the rental income as coming from a real estate firm called “Ginger, Ltd., Partnership.” But that firm has not existed since March 2006 when it was dissolved and its leases for upwards of 200 residential lots were transferred to Ginger Holdings, LLC. Ginni Thomas’ sister, Joanne K. Elliot, is listed as manager of the Ginger Holdings, LLC, but Ginni is not listed in the LLC’s state incorporation records.
The recent news surrounding Thomas’ financial disclosures has spurred Democrats to call on the policymaking body for the federal courts, the Judicial Conference, to refer Thomas to the attorney general’s office to investigate whether the justice ran afoul of federal ethics law. In a letter signed by Democratic leaders of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, Democrats accused Thomas of an “apparent pattern of noncompliance with disclosure requirements” and noted that in 2011, Thomas admitted he had not correctly disclosed his wife’s income for a number of years. Thomas claimed at the time that his failure to disclose was due to a “a misunderstanding of the filing instructions.” But Democrats pointed out that Thomas had “accurately fil[ed] disclosure forms regarding his spouse’s employment for as many as 10 years beginning in 1987.”
Responding to the allegations that he did not report the vacations funded by Crow, Thomas said he was not aware he had to disclose “this sort of personal hospitality” but said he would follow the Judicial Conference’s guidelines moving forward.
All of these irregularities in the Justice’s financial disclosures, combined with his wife’s close involvement in Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election have led many to question Thomas’ dedication to ethics.
“Any presumption in favor of Thomas’s integrity and commitment to comply with the law is gone. His assurances and promises cannot be trusted. Is there more? What’s the whole story? The nation needs to know,” Stephen Gillers, a New York University legal ethics expert, told the Post.

Civil Rights on the Left and Right
I found it interesting that in two Supreme Court civil rights cases today, the left and the right both wrap themselves in the mantle of the 1960s movement to end Jim Crow laws. 
In the college admissions case, Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, the conservative majority got to take the side of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his “I Have a Dream” speech, which proposed that race should not be a dividing factor in public life. 
Here’s how National Review frames the decision:
‘The colorblindness principle is a keystone of the American Constitution, as the Court’s opinion, and the historic concurring opinion of Justice Clarence Thomas, demonstrate at length. That principle found its roots in the Declaration of Independence and the abolitionist movement, triumphed in the Emancipation Proclamation and the Reconstruction amendments, and overcame legalized segregation with Brown v. Board of Education and the civil-rights movement. “The Constitution, as well as the Declaration of Independence, and the sentiments of the founders of the Republic, give us a platform broad enough, and strong enough, to support the most comprehensive plans for the freedom and elevation of all the people of this country, without regard to color, class, or clime,” Frederick Douglass declared in criticizing the infamous Dred Scott decision. As Justice Harlan famously wrote in dissent in Plessy v. Ferguson, which upheld racial segregation: “Our constitution is colorblind, and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens. In respect of civil rights, all citizens are equal before the law.” Or, as Justice Scalia put it pithily in his Adarand Contractors v. Peña concurrence, “in the eyes of government, we are just one race here. It is American.”’
Harvard’s position is characterized as being pro-segregation. First, ouch. Second, legally speaking, it’s a pretty easy task to frame the decision this way, since it does follow directly in the line of cases, starting with Brown v. Board, that were against segregation. Harvard ended up on the other side.
 In the other major civil rights case, 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, an evangelical website designer was protected from being compelled by the state of Colorado to design websites for same-sex weddings. The conservative majority treated this case as a First Amendment case--desigining a website is an act of creative expression, and the government cannot compel expression. Justice Sonia Sotomayor saw it as a civil rights case:
‘Around the country, there has been a backlash to the movement for liberty and equality for gender and sexual minorities...New forms of inclusion have been met with reactionary exclusion. This is heartbreaking. Sadly, it is also familiar. When the civil rights and women’s rights movements sought equality in public life, some public establishments refused. Some even claimed, based on sincere religious beliefs, constitutional rights to discriminate. The brave Justices who once sat on this Court decisively rejected those claims.”
According to the evidence above, both the left and the right are in favor of equality and are opposed to Jim Crow laws. But that agreement doesn’t seem to be the basis for further political agreement, or even interparty dialogue. Which means that at least one side does not hold these civil rights principles as strongly as its rhetoric makes it seem, since otherwise they would have a shared basis on which to work together, and they clearly don’t.
As Ken Kersch demonstrated in Constructing Civil Liberties, much of the 20th century discourse around civil rights was used as a smokescreen by Progressives to shrink the power of the states and the mediating institutions of civil society--especially religion--and to expand the size and the scope of the federal government. (Much of his book involves archival research in which Progressives said that in so many words--they did not care about racial or religious minorities, they just wanted to use the courts to remove obstacles to the Progressive ideal, which meant weakening the states, religious communities, the family, and private associations.) 
I suspect that something like what Kersch discovered is the real fight going on in these two cases. The website designer case is really a disagreement about whether the state can control the media when it wants. The Harvard case is really about how to shape and form the next generation of leaders. In both cases, the real goal is about who exercises control over ideas, and the language of civil rights was just the way to dress up these particular disagreements.

In recent weeks, it has come to light that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was “fudging” his financial disclosure reports, so to speak [2]. The esteemed justice, who has served on the highest court in the land since 1991, was allegedly reporting thousands of dollars of rental income to a rental firm in Nebraska [2]. Only one problem- the rental firm has been closed since 2006 [2]. Between $50,000 to $100,000 annually was attributed to this defunct rental firm [2]. The firm- Ginger, Ltd. was replaced by a new firm with a similar name- Ginger Holdings, LLC. However, no record of the new firm appears anywhere on the necessary forms [2]. This could be chalked up to a simple mistake in paperwork, but given other recent revelations regarding Justice Thomas’s finances, it seems unlikely [2]. The annual $100,000 falsely attributed to the rental firm is middling compared to the trips Justice Thomas allegedly took with billionaire Harlan Crow, estimated to be worth over half a million USD [5].
For over 20 years, Harlan Crow bankrolled the Supreme Court Justice’s trips around the globe- including several trips by yacht and private jet, as well as lavishing the justice with expensive gifts [6]. A law, passed in the wake of Watergate, requires judges, congress members, and federal officials to disclose gifts over a certain amount, a law which Justice Thomas appears to have conveniently forgotten about, as he failed to disclose both the gifts and the trips from Crow, on the required financial documents [5].
           So, what does a Supreme Court Justice do when they have been accused of misconduct? Technically, they do not have to do anything, because Justices are given life appointments, or appointments until the end of “good behavior” [4]. However, some precedent has been set for Justices resigning when caught in the middle of a scandal thanks to former Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas [4]. Justice Fortas was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Lyndon B. Johnson, where he served for four years before stepping down [4]. In 1968, Justice Fortas was nominated to succeed Earl Warren as the Chief Justice, when it came to light that he was being paid a stipend (around $15,000) to teach as an adjunct professor at American University [4]. This would have been all fine and dandy if the stipend had not been arranged by his old law firm and clients, several of whom had pending cases in the Supreme Court [4]. Justice Fortas withdrew his nomination as Chief Justice but remained on the court until it came to light that he had accepted a retainer (approximately $20,000)  from the family of an indicted criminal [4]. In 1969, Justice Fortas stepped down from the court, though he remained a practicing lawyer [4].
Justice Thomas’s financial transgressions are far greater than Justice Fortas’s, so perhaps it is wise for him to heed the actions of his predecessor. Whether he chooses to step down or stay on the court remains to be seen, but either way, his decision is certainly one for the history books.

Why Taylor Swift Has No Problem Defending Herself—No Matter the Cost

"Some fun facts about today's news: I learned about Scooter Braun's purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world," she wrote. "All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I've received at his hands for years."
As she explained in her post, she felt that Scooter's fingerprints were all over West and wife Kim Kardashian West's attempts to assassinate her character in the aftermath of the "Famous" lyrics debacle, which infamously find the rapper claiming that he "made that bitch famous," appearing in a screenshot of a FaceTime call between Bieber and West that the former shared with the since-deleted caption "Taylor swift what up" that she believes was intended to "bully [her] online about it" and allowing then-client West to release "a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked."

Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words 'Scooter Braun' escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn't want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever."
Taylor's move to take the two men involved in the deal to task has, predictably, drawn a line in the sand in the music industry, with folks like Brendon Urie, Halsey, Iggy Azalea, BFF Todrick Hall and other BFF Selena Gomezs mom Mandy Teefey publicly supporting Swift, while Bieber, Lovato, and Scooter's wife Yael Cohen Braun, who accused Swift of bullying her husband by going public with her beef, thereby sending her fan base his way, coming out in support of him.
While the minutiae of the deal and who knew about what when remains unclear, with Borchetta and Cohen Braun both furnishing receipts of some sort in their rebuttals to Swift that challenge her timeline, what is clear is that Swift is speaking up not just to shine a light on an injustice she's experiencing, but also to prevent other impressionable artistic youth from falling prey to the same sort of contract she willingly signed back in her early teens.
"Thankfully, I left my past in Scott's hands and not my future," she wrote. "And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make."
It's hardly the first time that Swift has vociferously defended herself while also trying to move the needle forward for those less fortunate than her, be they artists or women in general.
Back in 2013, Swift informed bosses at Denver's KYGO-FM that morning show personality David Mueller had sexually assaulted her, groping her at a meet-and-greet event as they posed for a photo alongside Mueller's then-girlfriend Shannon Melchor. "When we were posing for the photo, he stuck his hand up my dress and grabbed onto my ass cheek," she explained to TIME in 2017. "I squirmed and lurched sideways to get away from him, but he wouldn't let go. At the time, I was headlining a major arena tour and there were a number of people in the room that saw this plus a photo of it happening. I figured that if he would be brazen enough to assault me under these risky circumstances and high stakes, imagine what he might do to a vulnerable, young artist if given the chance. It was important to report the incident to his radio station because I felt like they needed to know. The radio station conducted its own investigation and fired him."
Two years after the radio host saw his employment status at the station go from "current" to "former," he filed suit against Swift, accusing her of lying and suing him for making him lose his job. He wanted $3 million in damages. As result, she brought a countersuit against Mueller for assault and battery, taking him to trial.

By 2017, she was on the stand, showing an unflappable, steely determination to defend herself in the face of a man who'd wronged her and a legal team intent on discrediting her. When asked why the photos of the incident didn't show the front of her skirt wrinkled as evidence of any wrongdoing, she answered plainly, "Because my ass is located at the back of my body." When she was asked if she felt guilty about Mueller losing his job, she responded, "I'm not going to let you or your client make me feel in any way that this is my fault. Here we are years later, and I'm being blamed for the unfortunate events of his life that are the product of his decisions—not mine."
In the end, the jury threw out Mueller's unfair dismissal case, ruling in Swift's favor, awarding the singer the symbolic $1 dollar she'd asked for. In a statement released after the verdict was rendered, she said, "I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this. My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Therefore, I will be making donations in the near future to multiple organizations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves."
A year later, Swift spoke to fans during a Tampa, Fla. stop on her Reputation Stadium Tour about the incident, thanking them for sticking by her during a "really, really horrible" time in her life. "I just think about all the people that weren't believed, or the people who haven't been believed, or the people who are afraid to speak up because they don't think they will be believed," Swift said. "And I just want to say that I'm sorry to everyone who ever wasn't believed because I don't know what turn my life would have taken if people hadn't believed in me when I said that something happened."

In 2014, after penning an article for the Wall Street Journal in which she argued that "music should not be free" and that artists shouldn't "underestimate themselves or undervalue their art," she pulled her entire discography from Spotify.

The following June, she penned an open letter to fans, explaining why they wouldn't be able to find her latest album, 1989, wouldn't be made available on Apple Music once the service launched. As she explained, her issue lay with Apple Music's decision not to pay artists during its free three-month trial for users to sign up. "I'm not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company," she wrote, adding that she was speaking on behalf of fellow musicians who had some hesitation at speaking out against the tech company.
"These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. Did Marcus Aurelius say, “Death smiles at us all?”
No, Marcus Aurelius did not say it. The quote comes from the movie Gladiator, in which the lead character says those words while making an allusion to Marcus Aurelius. What comes close is this quote, “Accept death in a cheerful spirit, as nothing but the dissolution of the elements from which each living thing is composed.” (Meditations 2.17)
The Quote Marcus Aurelius Never Said
Death smiles at us all, but all a man can do is smile back.
That faux-quote attribute to Marcus Aurelius actually comes from the epic historical drama film Gladiator (2000) based on Daniel P. Mannix’s 1958 book The Way of the Gladiator. The movie won five Academy Awards at the 73rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor. It also won four BAFTA Awards at the 54th British Academy Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Cinematography.
Russell Crowe played the protagonist Maximus.

In the movie, Maximus Decimus Meridius, a general in the Roman army, intends to return home after he leads them to victory against the Germanic tribes. When he goes to meet Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the king reveals he wishes Maximus to succeed him instead of his own son, Commodus, to help save Rome from corruption and restore the Republic.
On hearing this, Commodus flies into a rage and murders his father (which is a historical error; Marcus died of old age and disease).
Commodus declares himself the new emperor of Rome and asks Maximus for his loyalty. When Maximus refuses, the Praetorian guards capture Maximus for plotting to murder the king of Rome.
But Maximus escapes and goes to his home country Spain, only to find his wife and son dead, and his house burned down. He is taken by a slave trader and sold to the gladiator trainer Proximo. Maximus soon turns out to be the gladiator who never loses a fight.
When Commodus declares to stage the gladiatorial games, Proximo goes to Rome with his gladiators. In the fight, Maximus defeats the Roman champion and reveals himself as Maximus. Commodus’ sister Lucilla, and senator Gracchus decide to help Maximus escape, so he might build his army and come back to dethrone Commodus.
Commodus discovers the plot. And gets the Praetorians to kill Proximo and the other gladiators and arrest Maximus before he could escape.
Commodus declares that he will fight Maximus in one-to-one combat in the arena. In all of Rome’s imperial history, Commodus is the first king to clash with a gladiator. All Roman rulers before him were mere spectators. Commodus confronts Maximus minutes before they are to walk into the arena for a fight to the death.
Commodus: “Do you think I am afraid?“
Maximus: “I think you have been afraid all your life.”
Commodus: “Unlike Maximus, the invincible, who knows no fear?”
Maximus: “I knew a man once who said, ‘Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back.’”
Commodus: “I wonder, did your friend smile at his own death?”
Maximus: “You must know. He was your father.”
The man Maximus was alluding to was the dead emperor Marcus Aurelius, father of Commodus and the last of The Five Good Emperors. History holds Commodus as an arrogant and inglorious son and a timorous and undeserving successor to the mightiest Stoic to have ever walked this earth, Marcus Aurelius — The Philosopher King.
After their exchange, Commodus stabs Maximus to weaken him. In the fighting arena, however, Maximus kills Commodus and orders the restoration of power to the Senate and revival of Republican rule.
The Five Good Emperors
Marcus Aurelius was the last of “The Five Good Emperors” — Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius — who ruled the Roman Empire between 96 and 180. None of the five were blood relatives, though they ruled successively.
Nerva was chosen to ascend the throne by the assassins of Domitian, the king who had banished all philosophers out of Italy. Epictetus, one of those who formed The Stoic Opposition against the autocracy, had to flee to Nicopolis.
Trajan, a valiant warrior and a hero of the people, was chosen by Nerva. He reduced the taxes, started the “alimenta” fund system for the poor children, and often visited people’s homes without his guards.
Hadrian, adopted and chosen by Trajan, traveled a lot. He climbed Mount Etna, Sicily, and Jabal Agra, near Syria, to watch the sunrise. He started the imperial trend of wearing a beard.
Antoninus was adopted by Hadrian on the condition that he adopt the future emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus to succeed him. He started the Puellae Faustinianae, a charitable institution for the daughters of the poor.
Marcus Aurelius was The Philosopher King. He ruled Rome for 20 years through wars and plague with intelligence and prudence, and wrote the last great book on ancient Stoicism, Meditations.
“The Five Good Emperors” was a term first used by Machiavelli and later adopted and popularized by historian Edward Gibbon, who said under these men, the Roman Empire “was governed by absolute power under the guidance of wisdom and virtue.”
Edward Gibbon wrote in The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, “If a man were called upon to fix that period in the history of the world during which the condition of the human race was most happy and prosperous, he would, without hesitation, name that which elapsed from the deaths of Domitian to the accession of Commodus.”
The two best among the five were Trajan and Marcus.
Final Words
While the quote (Death smiles at us all…) is not a direct quote from Marcus Aurelius, it manages to tell us in a terse sentence how the Stoics saw death — as a natural phenomenon not to be afraid of.

Mardi Gras parades got canceled by Covid-19. So New Orleanians turned their houses into floats Like so many, the mom and insurance manager had known in her gut that the weekslong fête would take 2021 off. Revelers of all ages packed at least three deep along routes that wind for miles seemed the textbook antithesis of social distancing. “So, I kinda made a comment: ‘Well, that’s fine, I’m just going to decorate my house,'” said Boudreaux, who invited her neighbors to turn their homes, too, into stationary versions of the ornately designed floats that populate the four dozen or so parades that roll in the city each year. This way, she figured, partiers could stay 6 feet apart while visiting outdoors and enjoying the artistry of the annual countdown to Lent. The idea, like a splay of bead strands hurled skyward toward an endless carousing crowd, has spread. There’s a home with a sign that beckons, “Welcome to Wakanda.” Another features a Night Tripper theme in homage to funkman Dr. John. One house honors a health care worker alongside giant ivory beads. On a balcony, a cutout of the late chef Leah Chase stands, spoon in hand, at an enormous pot. Just off the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line, a giant model dinosaur in a top hat grazes. Elsewhere, a set-up pays tribute to Alex Trebek with a “Jeopardy!” board, playable using a posted QR code. Human-size Lego figures approximate a float rolling by parade-goers on a front porch. A wooden pelican the width of two men perches at another. All across town, papier-mache or cardboard and foil flowers of every hue, plus bunting of purple, green and gold and strands of beads the size of beach balls, adorn the homes where so many have been in retreat from the coronavirus since just after last Mardi Gras. That’s when 1.5 million people — including international visitors — converged on the city, almost certainly fueling viral spread that made the region an early hot spot. Indeed, the purple-and-white house icons that dot a map on the Krewe of Float Houses website cover the city’s entire main footprint like a sidewalk littered with doubloons, those collectible metallic coins tossed by riders from traditional floats. “In its essence, it’s not much different than when people drive around with the kids in the car and look at the Christmas decorations, holiday lights,” said Doug MacCash, who’s chronicled the house float movement for the local newspaper, The Times-Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate. “Except this year, in 2021, it has such a spirit of triumph, such a spirit of defiance. It’s like, ‘Sorry, ‘rona. We’re not just giving up.'” “Mardi Gras by no means is dead; it’s just different,” said City Councilman Jay Banks, who’s cast his own house — already painted yellow and black — with other trademark representations of the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, the city’s preeminent Black Carnival organization, over which he once reigned as king. “And what we’re forced to do this Mardi Gras, with Covid as the No. 1 consideration, … is how this whole house float thing got started,” he said. “And let me tell you, I am just giggly about it.” How to turn your house into a float Do-it-yourselfers — many already armed with hot-glue guns and glitter by the gallon for crafting annual Mardi Gras costumes — have embraced the home-design effort in earnest. Two private Facebook groups with more than 14,000 participants spew inquiries at all hours, most swiftly answered by a hive mind eager to collaborate after months of stay-at-home orders. “Any recommendations on securing this? It’s top heavy,” one poster asked, referring to a photo of a homemade Lysol can prop standing several feet tall. From another: “Has anyone had luck with using cardboard to make house float decorations? I already used some and painted and sealed with mod podge acrylic sealer but am wondering how it will hold up in the elements on a French Quarter balcony! Is there a better way of waterproofing, etc.?” The exchange is not unlike in the bleak months after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when neighbors connected to trade recipes for bleach or baking soda concoctions to remove mold from items soiled by the flood. Others looking now to gild their homes have turned to a regional cottage industry built over decades for precisely this sort of venture. “Part of the consternation about canceling Carnival had to do with, well, there are people (for) who(m) Carnival is their livelihood — a lot of people: float builders, bead- and costume-makers,” MacCash said. “Some of the Carnival artists who find themselves out of work at what would have been a real scrambling sort of time, what they’ve done is they’ve found employment decorating houses.” In a normal year, René Pierre right about now would be finalizing the books on some 75 floats that his company, Crescent City Artists LLC, decorates using lightweight utility canvas, bright house paints, hard coating, wood and Styrofoam, he said. This year, Boudreaux’s house float vision, which Pierre caught on a local news report, proved to be his “ticket out” of a toned-down Carnival — and one that follows his and his young daughter’s recovery from Covid-19. “Oh, man, in about three weeks, we were booked all the way up until today,” Pierre said last week of his house-decorating customers. “My wife and I were trying to sleep one night, and we kept hearing notifications coming from the website. It was like, “Ping ping ping ping ping.’ It was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ It was like instant success. It was incredible.” The couple inked 53 house float contracts ranging from $1,500 to $3,000 apiece, a sum many riders in the city’s biggest parading groups typically would spend on bead strands and other “throws” to toss in a given year. “It has really pumped my business into full steam,” Pierre said, noting he hired his cousin, a recording artist, to help manage the crush. “We have made more money in six weeks … and talk about Mardi Gras spirit.” Of the commissions, Pierre’s favorites are a trio of painted pups fashioned after the homeowner’s own pack, a Buddha-themed display and one highlighting the Grateful Dead dancing bears. Boudreaux, known as “Admiral B” of the house float fleet, aptly did her house in a maritime motif. “I don’t know if I want to know how much I spent,” she said: “definitely more than I meant to, less than a lot of people.” How to lead (or join) a house float krewe Beyond her own decor, helming this nascent krewe (local vernacular for a festival group) has become a second full-time job for Boudreaux. There are exchanges with lawyers over decorating rules in historic districts and weekly logistics meetings with the mayor to game out how to handle homeowners who want to, say, hire a band. There are now 50 captains, 39 subkrewes, a communications team and an effort to gather and edit together dozens of dancers’ at-home videos into a performance masterpiece for the website. Yet another to-do list item got added shortly after the krewe named a New Orleans bounce star as its grand marshal, Boudreaux said. “Now Big Freedia’s house is a traffic jam. The house is so popular that even guerilla photograph-style, it still drew a crowd,” the one thing the Krewe of House Floats wants urgently to prevent. The krewe also has launched a campaign to donate $100,000 toward those facing unemployment and food and housing insecurity largely because of this year’s Carnival limits: artisans, service industry workers, musicians, Mardi Gras Indians and other culture-bearers. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, “this year plants the seed” for what’s already becoming an annual event, to endure long after the coronavirus is vanquished, MacCash said. (At last count, Pierre already had 28 house-decorating contracts set for 2022, and preregistration is open for next year’s Krewe of House Floats.) For now, Chris Volion is looking forward to safely welcoming on Fat Tuesday, February 16, revelers who pass by his New Orleans home, adorned with enormous black birds inspired by local crows and Edgar Allen Poe in his personal Krewe of Nevermore. Volion, an institutional research analyst, and his wife, Janet, are making some themed throws to hand out and plan to join neighbors for king cake-flavored Jell-O shots. “While it feels different, there’s still that excitement going on,” he said. This year, instead of swapping parade plans, “the conversation has shifted to: Have you been to such and such a block, or have you see this house? It’s so beautiful to see that the energy is still there.” For Banks, the city councilman, the house floats offer a glimmer in an especially bleak season. In his own circle, Covid-19 has taken 23 lives and killed 17 members of the Zulu organization, he said, not to mention relatives and friends of the club. It’s stripped New Orleans — and the world — of the chance to socialize in person and to observe customs in the typical way. On the site of a former auto-repair shop here, broken stone walls mark the site of a 900-year-old village that may yield new insights into an ancient desert culture.
The ruins are what remains of two “great houses” — apartment buildings, essentially — that formed a northern outpost of a civilization based at Chaco Canyon, about 100 miles away in northwestern New Mexico.
Archaeologists from the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, in nearby Cortez, have just begun the first systematic excavation of this site in an effort to learn how its residents lived in the early 1100s, and how they related to the wider Chaco culture.
In particular, the Northern Chaco Outliers Project aims to determine when the village was occupied, how many people lived there, and whether they did so during an extended drought of 1130-1180, which may have accelerated a northward movement of people from Chaco.
The project is the first in many years to systematically excavate any of about 250 great houses that were built in the region known as Four Corners, said John Kantner, an archaeologist at the University of North Florida.
“We have so little understanding of the role of great houses and the relationship between others and Chaco Canyon itself,” said Dr. Kantner, who excavated Blue J, another Chaco-related site in New Mexico.
The project here has the potential to “fill in the gaps about the outlying great houses,” he said.

Three full-time archaeologists and volunteers began work in mid-May and will spend at least the next three years sifting through the ruins, named the Haynie Site after its former owners, Ralph and Claudia Haynie, who bought the five-acre property in the early 1980s.
The team is working from site descriptions and maps of the ruins that were made by Claudia Haynie as she did her own excavations in pursuit of artifacts.
Large parts of the ruins were excavated with heavy machinery, and portions of both great houses were demolished, disturbing to at least half the site, said Susan Ryan, the Crow Center’s director of archaeology, who is leading the project.
The artifacts obtained by the Haynies cannot be recovered because they were sold, she said. But archaeologists can use the couple’s records to infer what the site looked like before it was disturbed.
“She was recording, in a pretty scientific way, where her objects were coming out of the great houses,” Dr. Ryan said of Claudia Haynie. “She had a great respect for the people who used to live there, she has a respect for the buildings themselves.”
“Somebody really did care about the site even though the actions went against what archaeologists would say is appropriate,” she added. Today, local representatives from descendant communities visit the site twice a year and help guide the research.
Diagrams drawn by Ms. Haynie show floor plans for both of the great houses, which had two or perhaps three stories and measured roughly 75 feet by 55 feet. One of the drawings includes about 30 rectangular rooms, based on remaining masonry or inferred walls where none physically survived.

The diagrams also include five kivas, circular spaces that in bigger settlements were used for religious purposes. At the Haynie site, they apparently were used for everyday activities like sleeping, cooking or making tools.
Despite their practical nature, each of the Haynie kivas also contains a “sipapu,” a Hopi term for a ritual hole with a ladder used to symbolize a connection between the world and the spiritual realm, Dr. Ryan said.
“On a ladder, you are symbolically moving in and out of worlds that are vertical,” she said. “You are constantly being reminded of where you have come from, your identity and origin stories. It’s just a beautiful thing.”
On a tour of the site, Dr. Ryan pointed out a line of mortar in which alternating layers of clay and calcium carbonate made a stronger fill and insulated the surrounding rooms.
“Those are basket loads of fill that someone has dropped in there, probably in the early 1100s,” Dr. Ryan said of spaces between the stones. “That’s so exciting, because now you can see how big a basket was and how much dirt was in there.”
Estimates of the age of the Haynie structures comes from tree-ring dating. One of the roof timbers dates has been dated to 1111, when the center of the Chaco civilization was moving northward into what is now southwestern Colorado.
Archaeologists link the Haynie site to Chaco Canyon by noting shared architectural features, like subfloor ventilation systems, tall ceilings and flat-sawed timbers.
Like many ruins in the Four Corners region, the Haynie site remains on private land now owned by Haynie Ranch LLC, a company dedicated to preserving the site and investigating its history.
Surrounded by farmland, the site is closed to the public unless visitors receive permission from the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center. (By contrast, ancient cliff dwellings at nearby Mesa Verde National Park draw thousands of visitors.)
But the Crow Canyon team has been denied access to some of the ruins sitting on another parcel of private land, marked off by a barbed-wire fence that runs through the site.
Portions of the Haynie site, such as floors and hearths, will be covered over with earth, or “backfilled,” after the current project is completed, to protect the ruins from further exposure to the elements.
“Once it’s been open for that long, all of this wood has collapsed, all of the plaster has popped off the wall, and joints of all the architecture are coming loose because the mortar has run,” Dr. Ryan said. “Leaving things open is not where you want to be at for preservation.”
“It sounds crazy to the public, but backfilling is the most important way to preserve archaeological sites,” she said. “To have this backfilled would be the best protection you could have for a site.”
Covering the ruins would also help protect them from the “pothunters” who have removed artifacts from “pretty much every site” in the Southwest, said Dr. Kantner.
Even if the ruins were on public land, it would not be feasible to stabilize them in a way that makes them accessible to the public, he added. But the information gleaned from them can be shared through websites and museums.
“It’s still possible to tell their stories from what’s left,” he said.
