Professionaliseren op zaterdag op een onconferentie

Als docent is leren je vak, in mijn ogen is het zelf blijven leren dan ook een belangrijk onderdeel van mij werkende bestaan. Op een zaterdag kan dat bijvoorbeeld door het lezen van onderwijsboeken en blogs of door het luisteren naar een onderwijspodcast. Maar deze zaterdag werkte ik aan mijn eigen ontwikkeling doorvaar een onconferentie te gaan.

Een onconferentie? Ik was bij een Edcamp een vorm van een unconference, dus een onconferentie, dus een conferentie voor en door de deelnemers zelf. Een open space waarbij alleen de tijdstippen en de locatie door de organisatie geregeld of bedacht wordt. Bij de inloop zetten de onderwijsprofessionals zelf aan op het bord als ze een sessie willen voorzitten en anderen kunnen hier dan bij aansluiten om mee te doen.

Na jaren van willen deel nemen aan een Edcamp (en hiervoor ook de activiteiten van De Crowd), lukte het dit jaar eindelijk om er bij te zijn. Gelukkig kende ik al best een aantal deelnemers en organisatoren dus al bij binnenkomst voelde het als thuiskomen bij mijn onderwijsvrienden in de huiskamer van het LEF, de ontmoetings-, onderzoeks-, innovatie-, en samenwerkingsplek van onderwijs in Leiden.

In de eerste ronde vertelde Sanne van der Linden over het LEF als ecosysteem in Leiden op basis van alle vragen van de deelnemers. Zo leerden we over hoe het LEF ontstaan is en zorgt voor samenwerking en innovatie tussen en bij de onderwijspartners in Leiden met allerlei mooie initiatieven tot gevolg zoals bijvoorbeeld de Nacht van de Leraar. Uit deze sessie haalde ik inspiratie op over het de benodigdheden voor succesvolle innovatie die ik zeker mee kan nemen in mijn rol binnen de projectraad van de onderwijsorganisatie waar ik werkzaam ben en daarnaast deed ik inspiratie op over mogelijke initiatieven vanuit de interne Academy waar ik werkzaam ben binnen diezelfde organisatie.

Nadat de strenge tijdsbewaker ons vertelden dat we door moesten, gingen we over naar ronde 2. Onderwijsvriend Glenn Hille vertelde over wat hij meenam van de ChatGPT / AI conferentie waar hij de dag ervoor aanwezig was. Van 6 vingers op door AI gegenereerde “foto’s”, via discriminatie die zichtbaar werd door andere AI afbeeldingen kwamen we tot een mooie discussie over AI in het onderwijs.

Alle deelnemers voelen dat we mee moeten gaan, juist om de nieuwe generatie hier ook mee te leren werken op een ethische en kloppende manier, zien ook voldoende mogelijkheden maar hebben ook vraagtekens bij hoe we dit ook kunnen inzetten tot een succesvolle vernieuwing. De invoering van de rekenmachine beloofde ook een nieuwe wereld binnen het wiskunde-onderwijs, en de komst van zoekmachines verving ons bezoekje aan de bibliotheek voor het bladeren in encyclopedieën, maar onze werkstukken zijn niet complexer geworden in de jaren, net zoals dat de wiskunde-opdrachten nu na de invoering van de rekenmachine ook gelijk van verwachtingen zijn gebleven.

Er kan steeds meer, maar kunnen onze leerlingen en studenten ook steeds meer? We voelen de kansen die verzilverd kunnen worden, maar voelen ook de waan van de dag, de druk van het curriculum en allerlei andere factoren op de loer liggen. Glenn weet ons nog te vertellen dat dinsdag de mogelijkheid om met AI lessen te laten genereren in LessonUp live gaat en laat ons zien hoe DELL-E met een simpele prompt bijzondere afbeeldingen kan laten genereren. Ik zie direct licht in de AI-tunnel, nu kan ik toch vast binnenkort ook allerlei diagrammen genereren die ik kan gebruiken in mijn lessen? Want het zoeken van dit soort afbeeldingen voor in lessen of toetsen, kost nu vaak veel tijd zonder copyright van methodes te schenden.

Ook tijdens een onconferentie is er tijd voor een lunch, met eigen lunchpakket of door mee te eten met lekkers wat andere deelnemers hebben meegenomen. De lunch heeft natuurlijk ook een belangrijke informele uitwisselingsfunctie, zo vinden we al snel de overeenkomst en verschillen tussen de scholen(organisaties) waar we voor werken, en gaat de lunch’ronde’ even snel voorbij als de interessante inhoudelijke rondes. En zo gingen we al snel weer door naar de derde en laatste ronde.

De titel ‘reflectie en feedback’ trok direct mijn aandacht omdat ik in allerlei aspecten van mijn werk hiermee bezig ben. De inhoud bleek een gesprek over deze begrippen, maar wel gericht over het contact tussen collega’s in onderwijsteams. Aan de hand van een citaat op het whiteboard, “het probleem met feedback is dat mensen er onontkoombaar met zichzelf tussen zitten” – Griet op de Beeck VK 20/12/21, ontstond er een mooi gesprek. Bestaat reflectie zonder feedback, en andersom? Leidt feedback tot reflectie of kan reflectie ook tot feedback leiden? Kan iedereen leren reflecteren? Heb je feedback nodig in het onderwijs of is reflectie voldoende? Is het allemaal een semantische discussie? Bestaat er ook zoiets als teveel reflecteren? En liep ik daarna weg met allerlei interessante gedachtes, de boeken tip ‘conversations worth having – using appreciative inquiry’ en de deep democracy werkvorm waarbij je letterlijk achter iemand gaat staan als je het met hem eens bent.

Het kan lastig zijn om in drukke en moeilijke tijden tijd vrij te maken voor jezelf, voor leren, voor professionalisering. Maar nog nooit heb ik er spijt van gehad, als ik dat toch deed. En ook nu, na een intensieve week, ben ik blij dat ik gegaan ben. Ik kan het iedereen aanraden en wie weet, organiseer ik ooit nog een eigen Edcamp binnen mijn organisatie of vindt de EdcampNL ooit bij mij op school plaats.

Edcampokc

This morning I drive to EdCampOKC at DelCity High School all the way from El Reno, OK. I was so excited! I have heard so many great things about it from my professors at the University of Oklahoma. I arrive 15 minutes usually because as always if I am not early I feel like I’m late. I walk in and swear I am the second person to sign in right behind Andrea Melvin. I was excited and nervous all at the same time.

I sit with Andrea, who at the time I did not even know. We start to chat and boom the flood gates of networking open. The next thing I know Dr. Theresa Cullen is in the building along with Anne Beck and many colleagues of mine. I get star struck as I see Scott Haselwood arrive and I begin to vomit at the mouth about blogging and gamification. Revolutionary concepts for me and my career.

The first session I attended was breakoutedu. I had no idea what that was but Dr. Cullen suggested it. I walk in the class and meet Vanessa Perez and hear her explain this amazing tool for teaching in the class. I’m in shock when I realize the man sitting in my row is none other than @BlueCerealEdu himself! I’ve seen so many of these people in #oklaed chats!

The second session I attended was “What principals want in teachers”. Dr. Cullen created and led this session. I was so happy to hear what principals, senior teachers, administrators had to say. They all offered up many words of advice. I appreciated every word. I even made a google doc of their tips so I can refer to it when I interview.

I made some awesome connections at EdCampOKC. The only regrets I have are that I didn’t buy a shirt, it ended too soon and I didn't get everyone's twitter handle! I am so excited for my career in education and I truly cannot wait to soak up all the knowledge I can.

The 12 Days of C̶h̶r̶i̶s̶t̶m̶a̶s̶ HotLunchTray

Traditionally the 12 Days of Christmas starts on Christmas and extends roughly through teacher break; however it was celebrated in times of old is fine, but that’s how I observe it now. My stance is that fewer Geese a Laying is typically better. I offer my 12 Days of HotLunchTray instead.

Banning Cell Phones in K-12 Schools is Dumb

Cell Phones are Essential Learning Tools

Cell phones keep students connected, informed, and able to respond to emergencies. They enable access to educational apps, websites, and digital knowledge.

When used responsibly, cell phones can be powerful learning aids for interactive polling, collaborative research, multimedia projects, and more.

Banning Phones Assumes the Worst in Students

Prohibiting cell phones shows a lack of trust in students and breeds resentment. It punishes all for the mistakes of a few.

Students need to learn self-control and responsible technology use. Banning drives phone use underground.

Schools Should Evolve with the Times

The world is digital now. Students must learn to navigate this landscape. Banning phones does not help.

Cell phones allow students to participate more actively in class, pursue passions, and connect learning to real-world issues.

Work With Students, Not Against Them

Set ground rules together for healthy phone use instead of an outright ban.

Leverage technology to create an engaging, relevant learning experience.

Partner with students to unlock the academic potential of cell phones.
