You and @notajoinerofthings are my number one Drei Fragezeichen source. So one is for you. I hope you have fun! We all have done the best and worst ddf episodes. So lets get a bit more specific: episodes for long travels, guilty pleasures, holiday favs, over the top episodes, ridiculous episodes, cringeworthy but entertaining, cozy mystery mood, darkest episodes, strong bromance vibes, best villain (can be more than one), fucked with your head, best plot, best ending and/or beginning, scariest episodes and whatever other category you might wanna add. :)
Ohh, anon, I did have a lot of fun with this indeed, thank you! I doubt you or anyone reading this will tho, bc I always give the same answers. I tried breaking out of my pattern a bit, but wasn't every successful. We covered a lot of silly episode discussions, true, incl. favorite MaSo episodes and best atmospheric ones. Gonna say Thank You for this honor, also on behalf of @notajoinerofthings even though we cab probably both agree that we don't deserve it, bc our involvment with DDF sure has seen better days. (I did listen to the newest release tho, whatsitcalled, und die Gesetzlosen. Because they baited me with a horse on the cover. Fell asleep to it twice and woke up to Bob monologuing each time. Was then told that they cut the part where they explain what the horse is all about. Thx for nothing, Europa.)
episodes for long travels: Gonna start by being a disappointment right away bc when I want travel and holiday episodes, I turn to TKKG!! But DDF does road trips fairly well. So how about und der unsichtbare Gegner & Straße des Grauens. Toteninsel, too, for the real adventure kick. Feuerturm & Geister-Canyon bc I love when they drive up to one of the national parks. guilty pleasures: I don't have guilty pleasures, only Big Pleasures!! If we go by what's often perceived as guilty pleasure by others tho, it'd probably be the entirety of the Crime Busters for me. And Mann ohne Kopf!! holiday favs: Same problem. It's tough when these kids barely experience any seasonal weather bc they never leave California. It's even tougher when you don't like their Christmas special episodes (which I def don't). So you know my answer: as soon as December comes round, I'll start listening to Pistenteufel & Geisterstadt on loop for four to twelve weeks (I wish I was kidding....). If you want even more snow, throw in Tödliches Eis bc I remember that one being decent as well. over the top episodes: Aren't they all LMAO That's the entry level requirement for being a DDF episode! Might pick Comic-Diebe bc it pokes a lot of fun at artists and fans, in a way that hits too close to home at times, but it does so with love!
ridiculous episodes: Die Karten des Bösen!! I don't care that it's a pretend case to distract our three heroes. Minninger went full out with e v e r y t h i n g and it's a complete overload: Tarot. Crazy old cat lady. Mad scientist. Murdered cat. Cryonics and resurrection of the (human) body. Alleged death of a client. DIE VERDAMMTEN ATOMSTROMGEGNER!! What even IS any of this?!? Hexen-Handy is as campy as it gets. Also Im Bann des Voodoo bc can you believe there was a time when Minninger wrote both a book and a script FOR A KIDS BOOK SERIES that featured a band called Wet Boys and a producer named Al Parker, which are both constantly mentioned throughout the episode, and they just... let him fsjdkjfkgklfg. cringeworthy but entertaining: Fuball-Gangster & Verdeckte Fouls!!! Actually, I don't think the former is bad at all, on the contrary, it's BJHW proving once again that she is a prophet, exploring topics and issues which couldn't be more pressing in the year 2023. It's just that Justus' cousin (Jimboy-Jonas wtf?!??) is very cringe and so is the sequence where the boys get distracted by this self-heating food packaging (I love it but it's so freaking dumb lmao). Verdeckte Fouls is especially cringe bc the main guest actor is... not a voice actor at all. And bc of all the cringy shit they do with the football club and player names. (once again: I LOVE it!!! But it is very silly.) Can't even pick that one for most ridic or over the top episode bc the whole plot of ominous sect infiltrating a sports club is based on real life happenings fsjdkdkf cozy mystery mood: Karpatenhund. Spuk im Hotel. Der tote Mönch. Die Spur des Raben. Haus des Schreckens. Das Erbe des Meisterdiebs. Das Auge des Drachen. Die Villa der Toten. Der Fluch des Drachen. Due verschwundene Seglerin. Der heimliche Hehler. I complain so much, all the time, but they have TONS of highly enjoyable episodes that do cozy mystery with just a touch of action incredibly well!!
darkest episodes: Every ep that deals with how utterly cruel humans can be to each other, out of pettiness or jealousy or fear, or bc of old resentments. Less for personal enrichment but for vengeance. Utterly fascinating to me whenever one of the writers manages to make that the core of a story. Minni and Marx in particular seem to have a knack for that, see Stimmen aus dem Nichts & Villa der Toten. I'm sure there's more but I can't think of any rn. strong bromance vibes: That's easy: Bob & Kelly! With Just & Kelly as a close second! I also believe that Kelly & Peter will remain besties all their life, even after their breakup (which will happen bc this is just a high school romance); they care about each other and are an important part of each other's life, and their friendship is gonna outlast any romantic feelings. Honestly, they all adore Kelly, and they all vibe with her. And Kelly would do anything for them, 9 out of 10 times. Just look how often she helped them out on one of their stupid cases!! (Bob & Jelena would work too, but alas, I'm a Bob/Jelena-is-endgame truther, so there's always that special spark that makes them more than besties.) (Peter & Jelena does not work bc I headcanon that while Peter likes her a lot, he's also a tiny bit scared of her.) best villain (can be more than one): I answered that here as well, and still stand by my picks. However, I would like to add the mad siblings Joseph & Rachel Hadden. It's been a while, but I remeber coming out of my last Toteninsel reread being severely disappointed that a) Marx didn't do more with them and b) we never saw them again. Their criminal energy was off the charts, in different ways, and they were both pretty unhinged. A lot of potential and a nice opportunity to let our three boys dip their toes back into corporate crime shenanigans like back in the BJHW era. They also have another Good Sister, Anne, whose moral compass may be intact but who's equally as crazy bc she sure was ready to go to whacky lengths to stop her siblings. I just want more of this very rich and extremely shady cutthorat family! fucked with your head: Wolfsgesicht! Probably one of the most clever episodes in general. The entire episode is designed to fuck with you and get under your skin (and the text itself even explains this to you). There's such an eerie quality to those letters. I always thought the psychological theory explored in this ep is somehow the equivalent to the use of modality in the fantastic (Phantastik): toying with the ways language can express various relationships to reality and truth, showcasing how your mind will always fill in the blanks and jump to some kind of (false) conclusion. I had c h i l l s the first time I listened to Bob realizing this might be about an assassination attempt. Personally, I am also lowkey fascinated by Katharina Fischer's short writing stint: she came, she served, she fucked off when she was out of ideas. Iirc the ideas for both of her stories came about while she was sitting a lecture, and ain't that the most relatable thing ever.
best plot: Idk about his more recent releases, but until his gradn re-entrance with Spur des Spielers, I don't think there's a single book by André Marx that has a shitty plot. They might not always be brilliant, but all his stories are at least decent and well-thought-through. Let's go with Feuermond bc what he accomplishes there in terms of engaging crime plot + bringing back old characters + adding more depth and emotion + picking up old storylines is ASTONISHING!! Complex, yet not convoluted. You can tell he wrote the entire camping trip as a filler bc otherwise the trilogy would've been a book short, but it doesn't even matter! As far as trilogies go, I'll always be a Toteninsel girlie, but Feuermond is as neat as it gets! best ending and/or beginning: Answered the one for best endings here already. Best beginning is a good albeit tricky one! I'm usually a fan of anything that doesn't start with the gd phone ringing (this pattern peaked with Toteninsel) or them hearing someone scream in the distance. Especially today where the exposition averages around 15 minutes, making sure you're already bored out of your mind before anything of significance has even happened. Not to be like that again, but TKKG really DOES have the better openings. Mainly bc they're not strictly confined to the pov of the three protagonist's. But also bc Wolf really was brimming with cool ideas and was always down for trying out something that reads more Adult instead of sticking to the formulaic. DDF has a few in medias res beginnings (every Europe trip ep starts that way iirc, and I love it, not knowing where they are or how tf they got there or what is going on), but they just can't compare to an opening where the patron saint of the kids gets shot while on a stakeout!! I do think the first 15 minutes of Schatz im Bergsee are the best of the entire series, but I am not particularly fond of the plane crash sequence which i s the immediate opening. So pass on that. Haus des Schreckens could be good, but it drags on and on and has lost all its momento once they get to the punchline. Gonna go with Im Bann des Vodoo (Minni combining his two fav things, horror & gay porn); Späte Rache (honestly? Peter getting capture inside his car... listen to that w/o any context and it takes on a completely different meaning... Also I'm always down for Peter & Kelly hanging out and going clubbing!); Stimmen aus dem Nichts which is a lame and common thing to say, but it IS a good one, and Minninger, for all his shortcomes, usually has very strong openings. scariest episodes: Im Bann des Voodoo for early adolescence nostalgia (even tho I talk about why that might be Problematic here.) And I vaguely recall Der verschollene Pilot being one of the newer episodes that actually did make me feel uneasy when I first listened to it (I was in the middle of a dark forest tho!! But iirc some of my girlies on here said they had a similar reaction so yeah!)

Stadia: Es gibt immer noch Nachblutungen
Tumblr media
Harrison selbst hatte eigentlich keinen so schlechten Background.

It runs allegro.pl, an online store that sells products in a variety of categories, including automobile, home and garden, literature, media, collectibles. Electronics, children's products, health and beauty products, sports and supermarket. Additionally, the business runs the price comparison websites ceneo.pl and eBilet, which facilitate the sale of tickets for a variety of sporting, cultural, family, and entertainment events respectively. Additionally, it runs SkyNet Customes Brokers, an import and export agency, X-press Couriers, a same-day delivery courier service, Opennet.pl, a technological solutions provider for logistics, and Allegro Pay, a provider of consumer banking and lending solutions. Customers can purchase everything they require of over 135,000 sellers, who are free to advertise an infinite number of ads on our platform because we operate on a marketplace basis. As we mentioned we offer products in all major categories. We can say that it is quite a large category network. They may select from more than 250 million offerings at the most competitive rates with the greatest convenience and Poland's largest network of 50k pickup locations. In order to capitalize on the strengths of the merging companies and accelerate the enlarged group's global expansion, we closed the arrangement to buy global Mall Group and WE|DO in April 2022. Enhancing Merchant Experience In Allegro We want to make sure Allegro stock is a location where business owners, specifically micro and small business owners, may expand their operations. With 20,000 merchants starting to sell on Allegro in 2019 and an additional 15,000 joining the network within the first half of 2020. We are pushing the digitalisation of the Polish economy. We continue to invest in the tools and services that make up the merchant ecosystem; in 2019, we invested 700 million PLN. In 2019, the majority of business owners were able to boost their sales by 119%. Who Is Allegro Owned By? Allegro founded in 1999, and in March 2000, it was acquired by the website for online auctions QXL Ricardo plc. In 2007, QXL Ricardo plc renamed itself to Tradus plc, and Naspers purchased it in 2008. Naspers leased the Allegro Group to the a coalition of investment funds, including Cinven, Permira, and Mid Europa Partners, in October 2016. Is Allegro A Public Company? Yes. We have developed to get our clients' respect and trust. Our goal is to provide customers with the finest possible shopping experience and fantastic business prospects for retailers. We concentrate on customer requirements, which motivates us to develop novel commercial and technological solutions. Our Relational Net Promoter Score (rNPS) is 78.9, which is the highest in the industry. The Polish e-commerce company Allegro has gotten public over two decades after it was first funded. The company went public here on ALGM stock Exchange on October 12th, where its ALGM stock price started at 65 zlotys each, a considerable premium over its initial offering ALGM stock price of 43 zlotys. What Is Allegro Business Model? We refer to this phenomenon as the "flywheel," whereby the Allegro stock price platform generates strong network externalities that benefit both consumers on the consumer side and businesses on the supply side. The platform's product selection expands and pricing competition rises as more merchants sign up. Consequently, more customers are browsing and making purchases on the Group's online marketplace. Allegro stock price makes money primarily by facilitating the flow between buyers and sellers, as well as by commissioning and otherwise taxing sellers. By offering brands and retailers advertising options, we also generate advertising money. Is Allegro Trusted? According
to 13 evaluations for Allegro, which received a consumer rating of 3 stars, the majority of buyers are typically unsatisfied with their purchases. Allegro stock price is ranked 73rd among websites for general apparel. What Should I Buy With Allegro? If you know what to offer, when to sell it, and exactly how to pinpoint these factors, selling quality products on Allegro could be highly profitable. Allegro is synonymous with internet shopping for many Polish customers. eBay was never able to compete with Allegro. Not even when it tried to take the Polish market. One of the biggest online marketplaces in Europe, Allegro is the leading e-commerce platform in Poland. The site offers an alternative to globally competitive marketplaces and is accessible to vendors from around the world. During particular seasons of the year, several products, like: In the spring and summer, there are barbecues and tourist-related items. In the fall, there are wellington boots and Christmas decorations. What Businesses Does Allegro Funds Own? We have managed turnaround and extraordinary situation investments totaling well over AU$4.4 billion since investing institutional capital. We take great pride in our track record and standing. But don't just believe what we say. We are Australia's most renowned and honored turnaround team because we won the TMA Reversal of the Many Year Awards. We leave better organizations and individuals as a consequence of our participation because we cared just as much about the way in as you do on the way out. Is Allegro Stock A Buy? Are you listening to EUROPA?
Sony Music Family Entertainment veröffentlicht „Die drei ???, „TKKG“ und weitere Hörspiele in englischer Sprache
Tumblr media
Ganz im Sinne seines Erfinders veröffentlicht EUROPA (Sony Music Family Entertainment) im Oktober seine starken Hörspiel-Marken in englischer Sprache: „The Three ???“, „TKKG - junior investigators“, „The Ballaloes“, „The Gnats“, „Hully Boo“ und „The Foxpack“.
Oktober jeweils 2 x 2 Episoden digital. „TKKG Junior“ („TKKG - junior investigators“), „Die Teufelskicker“ („The Ballaloes“) und „Die Punkies („The Gnats“) richten sich an Vorschul- und Grundschulkinder. Auch von diesen Hörspielen erscheinen zunächst zwei digitale Folgen. Für „The Three ???“ wird unter der internationalen Marke mit den Geschichten und Visualisierungen der „Die drei ??? Kids“ gearbeitet.

The media room descended into darkness as the credits began to scrawl. The tin whistle warbled. And as the Doctor contemplated an offer of more popcorn—Rose was fiendish about the stuff, especially when he fancied it up with a bit of sea salt from Europa—he noticed something very odd: that the human girl, nestled in under his arm, had made a sound.
It was only a soft, small noise, muffled by the way her face pressed to his coat, but it was decisively the sound of a sniffle, of tears. And he could smell the salt, too, now that he was paying attention. Not from popcorn.
Rose, it seemed, was crying.
“Rose?” he said, voice hushed and overlapping with Céline Dion's. “You all right?”
She nodded, the little nudge of her nose digging further into his chest, but the answer was undercut entirely by a particularly forceful sniff-and-shudder combination. He held her tighter on pure reflex, wondering at the intensity of her emotions.
“Rose?” he repeated. In answer, her head poked up from under the shelter of his lapel. He could see quite clearly, even in the dark, that her nose was red and swollen, and tears had smudged into her flushed cheeks.
“‘M fine,” she whispered. Her voice was thick with tears. “Just gets me, this film, every stupid time.”
He smiled a little, though sadly. “Me too.” His melancholy was different from hers, of course; it came from the pain of knowing the real truth in a story.
But he knew what they both needed: a distraction. Something cheerful after so much melodrama. “D’you want me to cheer you up?”
Her eyelashes fluttered as she gave another tremulous nod. “Yeah." And then: "Please.”
In a flash, his smile quirked and spread into an impish little grin. “All right, then,” he said, affecting a cheery tone as he sprang to his feet. He searched the room for something—something fun—something not too serious—something to distract Rose from the inevitability of loss—before his eyes landed on the sketchbook on the side table.
Rose’s sketchbook.
The places they’d been, the people they’d met—she kept a record of them in that little faux-leather notebook. The pieces were fast, almost like figure drawings, and inexpert. But he liked to look at them, when she let him.
He liked the life she infused into everything she put to paper. More than any of the sights she saw, more than the truth of any faces, her sketches captured her—her spirit, her passion, her will to remember—and that made them, in their own way, beautiful.
“Miss Tyler,” pronounced the Doctor, as he took up the sketchbook and a nub of pencil and thrust them into her hands. "I have a request." He dropped his tone to something lower, slightly sultry, trying to strike the right balance between flirtation and humour. It was a delicate line, and one he found himself frequently walking with her. "Draw me like one of your French girls.” And as he gave an unconvincing wiggle of his eyebrows, he saw lightness return to Rose’s eyes, and a little smile curved one corner of her mouth.
Success.
“Really? You don’t mind?” He'd never explicitly agreed to be her subject before, but he hadn't expected such a tone of surprise.
“Really.” He nodded firmly. “Where do you want me?” And then, in a flurry of motion, he began springing and darting around the room, looking for the ideal pose. He tried leaning against the entertainment center—draping himself across the arm of the sofa—he even tried contorting himself around one of the lamps, but that proved tricky when the cord got tangled around his ankle and he nearly ripped the thing off the side table. It worked, though; Rose’s smile was growing.
“How about the coffee table?” she suggested. “You can recline, like she did, on the top.”
He looked dubiously at the wooden tabletop, wondering if it would hold his weight. A memory of him crashing through a glass coffee table in Jackie Tyler's flat—of Rose’s weight on his chest and a writhing plastic arm atop him—came and went in a flash. The Doctor nodded. “Sure, all right.”
Carefully, he began to settle atop the coffee table, stretching his limbs over the length of it. His feet hung off the end, of course, and his elbow didn’t really have much to brace itself against, but it seemed to be going altogether well until Rose said, “Aren’t you forgetting something?”
His head shot up. “What?”
“Well, Jack’s ‘French girls’ don’t really wear clothes, do they?”
He was taken so aback that he nearly tumbled backwards off the coffee table. It was only the force of Rose’s grin that kept him firmly in place, the way her eyes teasingly sparkled. It turned his lungs into a lead weight, and he felt as if the whole world was suddenly tilting sideways.
She was always surprising him, that Rose Tyler.
“I mean, if you really want to be accurate…” Her words trailed off in a leading sort of way, even as one of her eyebrows arched.
Flabbergasted, he felt heat rise into his cheeks—a rarity, for someone so in control of their own biology. But the flush crawled over him, and he wondered for a moment if he could actually do it. If she actually wanted him to. “I…” He’d done skinny dipping, of course, but that had been years back—bodies back—and he’d been in the bloody ocean, not up for display on a coffee table. He certainly hadn’t had the moment immortalized in art forever.
But then, it was only a bit of artistic nudity, wasn’t it? It wasn’t like he was doing something terribly strange or untoward. Some people got paid to be anatomical models for art classes. Granted, they weren’t normally in art classes with people they lo—
He struck that last remark.
One hand rose to finger the knot of his tie, loosening it just a little so he could give an awkward swallow. He could do it, he decided. He trusted Rose, after all. As his finger slipped into the knot, pulling it even looser, he glanced up at the artist in question, who was smiling brightly. Her tongue poked mischievously from the corner of her mouth. It seemed she was just going to watch him.
The Doctor cleared his throat. “Well, in the name of accuracy—I suppose—”
He was cut off by the sound of Rose’s laugh, and her sock-clad toe kicking the sole of his plimsoll. "I was teasing, you numpty! Keep your clothes on." And then, looking enormously satisfied with herself, Rose settled back on the sofa, sketchbook propped on her knees. "But I love that you have an open mind about it," she pronounced, and then she began to draw.
As much as he liked looking at her drawings, that simply couldn't compare to the experience of watching her draw. Her tongue poking out from between her lips, brows furrowed in concentration as she stared at paper—and then, the way she glanced up at him periodically, grinning as if in encouragement of his admirable stillness.
Tossing her hair over her shoulder, Rose finally spoke. "You know, I'd draw you more if I could get you to sit still for two minutes together."
"I'm sitting still now."
"That's just 'cause you're trying to cheer me up."
The Doctor chewed the inside of his cheek. "Is it working?"
Rose's answer was a contented hum and a nod, and then she shifted again, resituating her knees under her sketchbook. Her pyjamas were rolled up around her calves, and one of her oversized socks was sliding down toward her delicate ankle.
She was so pretty it made his chest hurt. Or maybe that was the ache of his hearts pounding too hard against his ribs, trying to express something inexpressible.
"Rose," he began.
"Hm?"
He wasn't sure what he wanted to say next; he'd just wanted to feel her name coming out of his mouth. To have it float on the air in front of him, mixing with the atoms, making her part of the very atmosphere. Something that could never leave or be taken.
He struck that remark, too.
He thought he should say something about how much he appreciated her traveling with him, even knowing the danger. He thought he should tell her about the real couple he met on the Titanic, the ones he couldn't save either. Or tell her that he'd always give her the spot on the life boat—or floating door—because she was worth that, worth absolutely everything, even drowning. Even being trapped on one dying space station under a black hole, forever. Even anatomical modeling.
"Doctor? What is it?"
Rose's voice brought him out of his reverie. Her pencil was still against the page, her head tilted so her hair fell restlessly over one shoulder. She was so—
She was just so—
I love you, he thought.
The Doctor swallowed.
"Thank you for drawing me," he said, the words infused with more than ordinary tenderness, warmth colouring every syllable.
The expression that passed over Rose's face was thoughtful, her eyes narrowing briefly while her full lips pursed. And then she was leaning forward—gradually, almost in slow-motion—as if giving him time to back out of something—but out of what? And anyway, he couldn't really back out without rolling off the bloody table. He cursed James Cameron for picking such an unwieldy-but-inviting pose; he was completely at her mercy. So he just lay there, eyes holding on her face, watching her get closer—and closer—
Until his eyes almost had to cross to see her. Her breath was warm on his face, human-warm and sweet. "You're welcome," Rose said.
And then, she kissed him.
A small kiss. The softest of kisses. Less of a kiss than even the one in Rome, which had run through him all bright and sudden and adrenaline-fueled, like a crack of lightning. This was like a warm summer breeze skating over his skin. A gentle touch.
There was hesitation as she pulled away. Like she was waiting for something. For him to run? To babble? The Doctor knew, instinctively, that he probably ought to be doing both. But he held his position, and held the warmth she'd left behind, bubbling just under the surface of his skin.
Blimey, but he was getting soft in his old age.
Rose's lips were gently upturned as she sat back against the sofa again, a faint blush staining her cheeks as she returned to her drawing.
Yes, she looked quite cheered, indeed.
And so the Doctor smiled, and he was satisfied.

“Herodotus and the Purposes of History
Written by Kenneth Scagel on June 18th, 2014. Subject: History. Filed in Ancient History, about Herodotus Greek Persian
|||Herodotus. The Histories. trans Robin Waterfield. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1998.
Tumblr media
Here are presented the results of the enquiry carried out by Herodotus of Halicarnassus. The purpose is to prevent the traces of human events from being erased by time, and to preserve the fame of the important and remarkable achievements produced by both Greeks and non-Greeks; among the matters covered is, in particular, the cause of the hostilities between the Greeks and non-Greeks. p. 3.
Herodotus is famously known by the dual moniker, “Father of History, Father of Lies”. Whether or not he deserves the latter epithet is perhaps up for debate. He is sometimes criticized as unserious for his many cultural digressions and travelog sidebars. It would, however, take a truly obtuse and narrow-minded critic to deny him the former title. History as a thing separate from record-keeping and chronicling begins with Herodotus. In and among his entertaining and diverting rabbit trails is some of the best and most important history ever written. He shows those who would do history after him what they were to strive for. It is in the opening lines of the Histories where Herodotus establishes the scope and purpose of history, and in doing so establishes its role in man’s attempt to understand his world.
The lines which begin the Histories are a model of clarity and simplicity. There is no excess rhetoric, no flowery overstatement. Herodotus states succinctly in the above passage the purpose for his account. His “enquiries” (ἱστορία) were made to serve memory and understanding—memory in preserving the deeds of men, understanding in examining how the circumstances of those actions came about.
Herodotus’ treatment of memory in this passage is more than just a simple remembrance. He is doing more than just recording a how, where, and when. The preservation of memory here is active, even aggressive, as if time were attempting to destroy the things of man, and history is a brandished weapon holding it at bay.
Almost as an afterthought, Herodotus appends onto his paean to memory a secondary goal. Among the matters covered will be “…the cause of the conflict between the Greeks and non-Greeks.” This is just casually thrown in as if to remind you to look for it along the way. Here Herodotus is understating his purpose, and by playing down this item, he shows its importance. The discovery of the causes of action, and why men have acted as they have, is the heart of the study of history.
So what is the cause of the conflict between the Greeks and the non-Greeks? What was the spark that began the fire that led the largest army in antiquity to cross from Asia to Europe in order to subdue the cities of Attica and the Peloponnese? Herodotus’ examination of this is more subtle than some will give him credit for, and is composed of one part scholarly guile, and one part showmanship. He will look at the opinions of the Asians and the Greeks, and then settle on the pattern that will lead him through his entire enquiry.
“According to learned Persians, it was the Phoenicians who caused the conflict....”1 So begins Herodotus’ examination of the causes of the great conflict. Right away, he is already showing historians their business - he is sourcing his work. He is telling you whose opinion he is working with. As he proceeds, he relates the Persians’ story of Phoenicians going to Argos and abducting Io. In a turnabout, some Greeks go to Tyre and abduct Europa, while some others go to Colchis and abduct Princess Medea (there is some confusion amongst the Persians as to whether the former group were properly Greek, or Cretan). All of the second round of abductors justify their actions by pointing to Io’s earlier capture.
Finally, the son of the Trojan king, Alexander (Paris), abducts Helen from her home in Sparta. At this point, according to the Persians, the Greeks gain culpability, for “…so far it had only been a matter of abducting women from one another, but the Greeks…took the initiative and launched a military strike against Persia.”2
While it is true that the Persians viewed this kind of rapacious activity to be illegal, they found the Greek reaction to Helen’s abduction odd because, “…it is stupid to get worked up about it....“ They viewed the Greek reaction to be unjust and “…date the origin of their hostility towards the Greece from the fall of Illium.” 3
After sourcing these opinions, and running through them, Herodotus gives his own opinion: forget the abductions; they are not the issue.
So this is what the Persians and Phoenicians say. I am not going to come down in favor of this or that account of events, but I will talk about the man who, to my certain knowledge, first undertook criminal acts of aggression against the Greeks. I will show who it was who did this, and then proceed with the rest of the account....Croesus was Lydian by birth. 4
Now in this small passage there is much to consider. First, there is his deft handling of his concerns over the veracity and relevance of the Persian accounts. He is going to leave myth to the shrouded past. His basis is going to be the man he knows committed these acts—acts he can verify, and then confirm with more evidence. He places history into a position of trying to know, not just to guess.
It should also be noted that he doesn’t quite say directly that Croesus the Lydian is the cause. He lets it hang, and in so doing opens up the possibility of reflection by the reader. He will go on to place the actions of many men before the eyes of his audience, and any combination of them can be considered as causes. He presents his tales as parts of a larger whole, and that whole is not just a few flimsy fables to paper over bad behavior, like the stories of the Persians. This whole shows real causes of human actions and events, and participate in the truth. So much for the “Father of Lies”.

I was not able to find much about Kenneth Scagel and the link he gives to the Roper School does not work. But this text of his about Herodotus and the purposes of history is very good.

Things had never been terribly easy for them, it’s true--but their circumstances had only weighed harder on them in recent years, as the Orokin Empire’s growing stranglehold on the system and the clan’s deserted location made it harder and harder to keep people fed on their own. All they really had going for them was their steel and their freedom, and, though she did not wish to say it, she harbored doubts that the golden bastards wouldn’t come for both of those things sooner rather than later. The Orokin couldn’t stand anyone not under their control.
But that was a problem for the future. The current problem was supplies, which mostly came from other settlements on other planets. And, while they could occasionally pay passage on ships with “mercenary” work, it was harder to get into the heart of Orokin territory in such a way.
Which was why Istha is currently sitting in a shipping container in the cargo bay of a dingy Grineer mercantile transport vessel.
The Grineer were often chosen as ferries for goods within the empire, as they were less likely to sell said goods than the Corpus--and, for the purposes of herself and her companion, they were much easier to infiltrate. Not that she’d ever personally done it before, but he apparently had some experience with it, and she was willing to trust him on this.
What she wasn’t willing to trust him on was how long they were intended to stay in the damn boxes. Istha lets out a long sigh and tries not for the first time to shift into a more comfortable position; her feet hit the wall while her head hits the inside corner and she groans in growing frustration. It’s impossible to tell how much time has passed, but she’s starting to lose her patience, and kicks one of the metal crate walls as best she can, letting out a satisfying clang. She hopes that will serve as enough of an indication to her partner that she wants out.
There’s a long silence, and then a muffled, matching clang from somewhere nearby. Istha decides to take this as an affirmative and begins to push her lid open. The Grineer weren’t always the best at handling their cargo, and so her own crate had wound up on its side (luckily for both her and the Grineer who’d set down the box, as most fragile cargo could not brace its feet and arms into the walls and wait for a safe moment to crawl to the newly-reoriented ground).
It doesn’t take long for Istha to force the crate open, and she crawls out on her hands and knees into the cargo bay proper. The cargo bay isn’t much brighter than the inside of the crate, but in the emergency lighting, she can make out the glint of a crimson blade sticking out of the top of a crate in the next row, and she grins.
Yeah, she figured he was starting to go insane, too.
He hadn’t gotten as lucky as her with his crate’s orientation, so she watches as he laboriously pries the lid open and pushes it back so it’s barely balancing on one of the crate’s walls. The sword is thrown over the edge so he doesn’t impale himself on it, before he lifts himself over the edge as well, balancing awkwardly on his stomach and trying to get his hands to reach the ground. Istha covers her mouth to try and hide her snickering, but this quickly dissolves into full-on laughter as he loses his balance and tumbles onto the ground in an awkward somersault, ending up on his back.
It takes Istha several seconds to calm down enough to speak. “I am forever grateful that you chose to train me.”
He drags himself into a sitting position, glaring at her with a sort of muffled growl that just makes her burst out laughing again, doubling over on herself. Blood and bone, she thunks to herself, I was trapped in there too long.
“If you’re finished.”
Istha snorts, but slowly manages to pull herself together and sit up properly, though she still throws a smirk in his direction. “I liked the landing. Is it a new technique?”
“You know me, the notorious blade in a box.” He huffs a sigh, but she catches a quiet chuckle following it. “You all right?”
“Pretty much.” Istha stretches her arms over her head. “How do you do this?”
“Usually, about the same way we did it this time. Except once or twice when I went on these trips I was smaller.”
Istha wraps her arms around herself as the chill of the cargo bay hits her. At least the air is somewhat less recycled, but the ambient temperature makes her question just how much steel the Grineer actually put between the cargo bay and the ravenous void of space. “How far do you think we are?”
He shrugs. “We had an early stop, that was probably the Phobos station, and we should’ve translated once already. Maybe Europa?”
Istha winces, but looks away quickly to try and hide it. It’s not a big portion of the trip, but she already feels like she’s missed so much. She’d never seen a ship void translate before. “So a while yet to Uranus, then.”
“Yes. What’s wrong.” She can feel his piercing gaze on her and hunches her shoulders. Damn it, was she that obvious? “Body language,” he adds, again as if reading her mind. “You’re defensive. Lacking confidence.”
Istha scrunches her face up in frustration and makes a conscious effort to open up her posture towards him. Confident, but not stupid. You hold your chest high, but never, ever forget that it’s a target.
“...I’ve never been off-planet before,” Istha admits. She’d learned a long time ago that it was useless to lie to him; he was much too good at reading the little twitches and quirks of others. It was part of what made him as capable a warrior as he was--he could read his opponents like a book without even thinking about it, while she was often more...single-minded. “Mama told me that we used to move around a lot more. Pack everyone up on a ship and hop to another planet.”
“You know I can’t remember the last time we did that, either.” Right, she often forgets that he’s not really that old--not much older than her. “But I know that was when there were less of us, and there was more of the system out there.”
“Golden bastards,” she grumbles, and he nods in understanding. The Orokin had gotten a reputation for destroying most everything they touched, not that anyone would say it within earshot of a Dax. “Do you really think these trips will be enough?”
“For now, they have to be.” His tone is grim and brokers no argument. “What troubles you.”
Istha sticks out her tongue in his direction. Stubborn as a mule, all the better to match with her. “You’re not going to be dissuaded, are you.”
He smiles. “No.”
“Couldn’t we go up top? Smash a few heads, look out the window?”
“Let’s see, there’s about...a hundred Grineer on this ship, and two of us.” He tilts his head and raises an eyebrow knowingly. “We shouldn’t, not with those numbers. Wouldn’t want them to feel too bad about themselves.”
Istha barks a laugh, but it’s short-lived. “Seriously. We could handle them.”
“We could. But the Grineer like their manual ships, no fancy Orokin navigational system or what-have-you. Can’t risk the pilot dying.”
“Don’t you know how to pilot?”
His eyelids lower. “Istha. I wouldn’t be caught dead flying this kind of bucket.”
“Well...” She shrugs. “I could probably figure it out.”
“Don’t. For the sake of all that is still good in this system, don’t try to figure it out.”
Istha grins, languidly leaning forward so her chin rests on her hands. “Have a little faith in me, friend~”
“Absolutely not.”
“Are you worried I’d put you to shame?”
“I’m worried that I would be caught dead in this bucket.”
Istha lets the sly act dropp, shifting so her cheek rests on one palm. “Really, though. I don’t want to go my whole life without seeing the stars from here, you know?”
He presses his lips together into a thin line, and glances off to where one of the far walls of the cargo bay should be. Her eyebrows shoot up toward her hairline.
“...We’d have to wait,” he cautions. “Can’t risk springing something like that too early.”
“But you want to.”
“I may want to put some Grineer in their place. That’s all.”
He folds his arms, ostensibly shutting her down, but Istha’s eyes crinkle in amusement as he continues to stare into the distance--she knows she’s going to get exactly what she wants, and she’s not even going to have to drag him along behind her. He knows it, too, judging by the faint turn to his lips he tries to tamp down.
If waiting is his only condition, she’s willing to go along with it, just as long as she gets out of the cargo bay. Really, she doesn’t mind the waiting now that she’s out of that crate and with him, even if they sit in silence for most of it.
She’ll pass the journey entertained by the mental images of the surprised looks on the Grineer’s faces when they realize what they’ve done, and that’s quite enough for her.
And she isn’t actually going to try and pilot the ship.
...Probably.
