KiScon 2022 Progress Report #8, Schedule and Mods
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear K/S friends,
Autumnal greetings from the headquarters of con farr! KiScon is only 18 days and several hours away.
1. KiScon 2022 Program / Schedule: Call for Mods/Presenters
We are happy to present to you the schedule for download as pdf file. It is still subject to change (though we really try to avoid any further moving about of panels), and you can see that there are many panels still waiting to be adopted by a willing presenter or mod. One of KiScon's strengths has always been the amazing creative and intellectual force of its attendees; this is what guarantees a weekend filled with inspired and inspiring discussions, new insights, a fascinating exchange of headcanons and interpretations, and of course the spawning of countless plot bunnies. All panels will be held via Zoom, and there is not much technical knowledge needed to take part or present one. We will happily help with all technical and logistical questions!
If you would like to present or mod a panel (some topics might lend themselves more to a presentation followed by discussion, others might be more suited to an interactive approach with audience participation from the start – that is up to you!), please let us know soon: larissa @ kiscon . org.
2. Upcoming KiScon Office Hours:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For all your questions regarding KiScon – be it about Registration or Conline, Discord or Zoom, or anything else that you would like us to explain or help you with.
Our wonderful StarshipLillian will sit in our virtual office during these time slots and happily welcome visitors. Pop in spontaneously by joining this Zoom room and say hello.
Of course you can also ask us All The Things during Pub Night events, or anytime via email (starshiplillian @ kiscon . org, 1lostone @ kiscon .  org, larissa @ kiscon . org) or message on Discord or Facebook, but these office hours are an additional opportunity to ask or tell us anything you'd like to.
3. Program Booklet:
If you have a dealer membership and want us to feature your fannish business or projects in our con book (program booklet), please send us a short text with all your info and important links (e.g. to your portfolio or Etsy etc.) as soon as possible (= ideally, NOW): larissa @ kiscon . org
4. Upcoming deadline: Cake Contest (1 November)
A beautiful K/S-themed cake has long been a staple of KiScon throughout the years. We would like to carry on with this tradition even in the digital setting and invite everyone to take part in our cake contest. While we won't be able to taste the sweet creations, we'll be able to enjoy them in a visual way. Be it a big cake with buttercream drawings, or adorned with marzipan figures or peens, be it a K/S action figure variation of the infamous Barbie cake, or be it cake's little cousin, the cupcake, go wild and surprise us!
We will present the creations in a virtual gallery (photos, but also recipes/explanations of symbolism etc. if you would like to include them) and KiScon attendees will vote for their favourites. Photo toppers are allowed, but we ask you not to use other people's fanart without asking the artist first. You can create your K/S (cup)cake anytime before the con, but we need to have your recipe/photos submission no later than November 1st, 2022. Get in touch with us at cakecontest @ kiscon . org.
5. Scholarships:
With great joy and gratitude we are able to announce that we have 7 scholarships waiting for K/S fans who would like to attend KiScon for free. Three generous members would love to send you or your friend to the con! LEARN AFRICA 2023: New call for applications
Dear friends and partners of the Women for Africa Foundation,
We are pleased to inform you that our Foundation has just launched the Learn Africa 2023 call for applications.
Learn Africa, the postgraduate scholarship programme for African women par excellence, celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2023, leaving behind a trail of 293 students from 34 different countries, many of whom have successfully completed their studies in Spain or Morocco and have managed to successfully integrate into the world of work in their countries, with the consequent improvement in their socio-economic situation and that of their families - as demonstrated by a study carried out by the Foundation in the last quarter of 2022.
In this new call for applications, the Women for Africa Foundation and its partners have made great efforts to offer the maximum number of in-person scholarships in the history of the programme, as it has been demonstrated that African women make the most of this type of scholarship at all levels. Likewise, as one of the objectives of Learn Africa is to break down the gender stereotypes that persist in the world of work and academia around the world, this year special emphasis has been placed on postgraduate studies in STEM fields, many of them taught in English.
In total, this new edition of Learn Africa offers 77 new scholarships and 27 continuation scholarships (masters, doctorate, research stays, expert courses and other postgraduate courses), which would not have been possible without the unwavering commitment of the programme's more than 50 collaborators, including universities, educational centres and private funders, such as GMV and the ASISA Foundation. The latter have been joined this year by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, which will support the programme by financing an internship for a PhD student in Biomedicine from the University of León, and the ANESVAD Foundation, which will sponsor two research scholarships aimed at studying skin-associated NTDs from a gender perspective.
All the information on the call, as well as the steps to follow to apply for a scholarship, the costs included and the requirements of each academic programme, are available on the Foundation's website. The deadline to apply for a scholarship will be open until 12 April 2023 at 23:59 hours (Madrid).
Below you can find the links to the web sites of the call for applications in Spanish and English, so that you can share them with those African women interested in applying for a scholarship:

Blog #1 Letting a "dream" die.
Tumblr media
As I am writing this and gather my thoughts on this personal post. I am writing this on the table I had set up for myself months ago in mi hogar , in fact during the fall of 2022. This table was to help me figure to create a space for deep focus on my goals. I had taken the time to create something called the Vanitas project. It is a basic map to help me guide which goals I needed to complete first before doing the others. Set one is the foundation of the goals but also the most hardest. First set was to lose weight , improve on my artistic skills and Spanish comprehension. The goal of Project Vanitas is to to help keep mis metas in line and focus rather than jumping around confused. But there was a mistake on this project: It's personal. There is no professional deadline. 13 year old me would beg to differ-Why include XYZ if Crystal is the priority?
The origin of my goals can be traced back when I was younger. Lets refer this version of myself as Ally. Ally represents my inner child and the origins of the first goal when I was 12. Most of the goals set here have a foundation- to one day publish the story of Crystal my first ever OC. Ally loved her despite how flawed Crystal was. Crystal had 100+ powers, transformations, anime husbandos AKA a Mary Sue. She would envision many moments of putting Crystal in pain, tears or happiness whatever Ally liked. Up until she grabbed a pencil and paper. Ally went on a journey to draw just to turn her creation to life. 85% of the stuff she drew was of Crystal. Crystal was a soul and alive.
The Mary Sue had many revisions and so did Ally's style. Ally improved her anatomy her style and before she knew it she could draw hands. Ally's priorities were just to draw all the time and maintain straight A's which were a piace of cake, until she met boys aka relationshiippsss. There was Boy 1, the sweetheart. Boy 2, what was I thinking? Boy 3... boy number 3.
Drawing and Crystal became secondary. Her grades were still great. Despite the change in Ally's focus, her creativity stayed the same till boy #3. Hay caramba, Boy #3 met me back in 2018. But he never met Ally. Back in late 2017, I had shifted went to a trade school under a graphic design program. And in the first time in my life I felt like I knew were I had to navigate my life. I was gonna go to college and earn an associates degree in graphic design and eventually publish Crystal's story as a comic. The portfolio mattered more than the degree and I was at my panicle of creativity and art. Art was now something I was doing seriously and for fun. I gotten praise from my mentors and eventually got a scholarship for a local college. Ally was fully present at her graphic design program. She fully bloomed her portfolio in to an magnum opus, until she had her great, unfortunate fall.
Ally was present during the first 6-7 months with Boy # 3. After that, I don't know what to call myself during the remaining time frame. It was just a cycle of my self-neglection that was attributed from Boy #3. During that time I abandoned my core beliefs all for a selfish stupid boy. Thankfully the cycle breaks. Instead of telling myself lies, my core-truths kicked in and we started arguing. The tip of the iceberg broke by a text from him. Telling me that I could do so much more in life and that he was holding me back. I didn't believe that text until a month later. In that month included, he did what every melodramatic boy does in soap operas- " I AM SO SORRY I MISSED YOU BLAH BLAH BLAH."
I focused on myself with Panera and the gym. The only things I had along with my mother to support me. The break up was in the October of 2020, 1.5 years after I graduated and 6 months after the college I was going to attend shut down.
At this point I accepted that I had no direction in that moment of my life. This brought me to my current self. Spring of 21, middle of the pandemic, I spent 13 dollars on Bumble and found a bee. A bee that gave me the happiest 2 years of my life. Ally still wasn't present. The feeling I felt post-break up with Boy #3 was "forged Passion". I was trying to force myself to draw when Ally wasn't present and despised staring at a canvas for so long I didn't create anything . She represented my inner-child but she was also my muse. Which would explain the many times I had mini-life crisis and doubts of what I wanted to do long term during my current relationship. " I don't know what to do", "Should I learn a trade", etc etc. I was bouncing between careers. Ally as a muse died when I was a few months into my last relationship. On May 20th of this year I laid Ally to rest which was also the dream of pursuing a graphic design career.
I fell in love with the idea to move to Europe and hopefully attend college-not sure what I will pursue- there after my spouse finishes with his studies. So I thought about studying German. I didn't feel sad for changing my dream because I can't force myself to be an old version of me. Change was inevitable. Letting go of an idea I built upon more than half my time here alive was never a bad ending. It was much much needed after having doubts for 2 years of what the next stepping stone of my life would be. All that I know patience will allow me to embrace this next chapter of mine.
Project Vanitas needs some adjustments because the core is still the same. Crystal is still around, her story will continue to evolve and adjust as I do. One day she will be out and about either as a web comic or novel. That I do not know yet. I'll continue to improve my Spanish and exercise but not draw seriously; only as a hobby.
Requiesce in pace my muse.

Gilman Scholarship and Pursuing Study Abroad in Korea
Tumblr media
Victoria Halsey  |  Class of 2024  |  International Studies and Psychology Major  |  Linguistics Minor  |  University of South Carolina
Seoul, South Korea  |  Spring 2022  |  Global Partner Program: CIS  |  서강대학교 (Sogang University)
Pursuing study abroad is possibly the best decision that I’ve made for myself. It can seem intimidating with all of the different applications, deadlines, and fees, not to mention being thousands of miles from home. However, there are so many scholarships and grants available to those who truly want the experience, and in my opinion, getting to live abroad and explore another culture is well worth the sadness of missing home.
I received the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship from the Department of State to help fund my studies. The program supports undergraduates who may not otherwise be able to study or intern abroad due to financial constraints with up to $5,000 per student. Those that receive a Federal Pell Grant during the application period or during the term of their study abroad program or internship are eligible to apply. The program provides students with the opportunity to form international networks and gain professional skills, language abilities, and global knowledge to advance their careers, as well as U.S. national security and economic prosperity. Gilman Scholars foster mutual understanding abroad, representing American values. They are also eligible for noncompetitive eligibility hiring status within the federal government, meaning alumni can be hired by government agencies outside of the formal competitive job announcement process.
Personally, the Gilman Program was exceptionally beneficial for me as it helped cover the remaining costs of my study abroad program after financial aid, and it required significant introspection about what I hoped to gain from my experiences abroad. The application made me think about how studying abroad would advance my academic trajectory, as well as how it might impact my future aspirations. With my major being international studies and my plans to work in the international human rights field later in life, it seems like a no-brainer how studying abroad would enhance my learning and preparations for the future. However, it made me consider why studying in Korea specifically would advance my goals and what I could contribute to the cultural exchange. After being accepted into the program, I was required to set goals for my time abroad, which encouraged me to think about specifics that I wanted to achieve abroad rather than just the big picture of expanding my global competence.
I spent my first week in quarantine due to Korea’s Covid-19 travel regulations, only leaving my room to go to Covid testing sites with other people in my program. Honestly, I didn’t mind quarantine too much as it gave me a chance to adjust to the time difference and stare at the city beyond my window, though my view wasn’t great. My first day out of quarantine was exhausting but exciting. My friend and I started the day by searching convenience stores for TMoney cards, which are used to ride buses, taxis, and the subway. We finally found some after asking an 아저씨 (ajusshi/older man) working in a store where they would be. It was the first time we talked to a stranger in Korean, and his kindness throughout the interaction gave me confidence that I would be able to navigate everyday conversation in Korean. We spent a chunk of the day searching for a health center where we needed to get a form to be allowed in most restaurants due to Covid (this policy was relaxed soon after our arrival). I was happily lost, taking in my surroundings, though the cold made my hands feel like they might fall off. We happened to wander into the Dongdaemun Design Plaza which was exciting as we had planned to visit it soon. After we finally found the center, we spent the rest of the day exploring stores and deciding what foods to try.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I learned to navigate around Seoul relatively quickly, using KakaoMaps to get everywhere; it would tell me what bus numbers I could take or which subway line that I would get on. I learned to use the bus first; the only difficulty was ensuring that I got on the correct bus and off at the correct stop before it sped away. However, if I missed my bus, there were often others that could get me to the same location, or I could wait for the same bus number to return which usually did not take long. The first few times I took the subway my friends confidently led me to our destination, so I was able to pick up how the lines worked through observation. The subway closes at midnight, which was inconvenient at times, but night buses run sporadically, meaning I would be able to get home without taking a taxi.
Knowing how to speak a little Korean and read Hangul made me significantly more comfortable in my new surroundings. Even if I didn’t always know what a Korean word meant, there were often words borrowed from English that were written in Hangul which helped me deduce what was meant by the phrase. It was especially helpful when ordering food so that I didn’t have to scan the menu with a translator app to decide what to eat.
I really enjoyed Korea’s university life. A  club fair at the beginning of the semester allowed me to interact with so many other students, which I couldn’t do in my classes as they were online. Through the HUG program, I was matched with a buddy, and we met for a few meals. We got along well and had really interesting discussions with some about cultural, educational, and political differences between the US and Korea. I also joined a club for English language exchange as an opportunity to meet more people. We engaged in missions almost every week, competing against other teams in the club, and I made friends and visited areas that I may have otherwise missed. When it started to warm up, universities around Seoul had festivals open to everyone, which often boasted performances from famous Korean artists— I saw PSY in the pouring rain, surrounded by thousands of other uni students. Sogang’s festival included food trucks, drinks, and student performances, which I enjoyed with my friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Academically, the courses that I took at Sogang were very beneficial to my major. As an international studies major with an emphasis on Asian studies, I took courses covering Chinese philosophy, Korean history, and Southeast Asian society. I wouldn’t have been able to take these classes at USC, and I was glad to have the opportunity to take courses so tailored to my concentration. I was also able to take social psychology for my psychology major, allowing me to learn about social psychology applicable beyond the context of the US. That being said, the courses were online, limiting communication between students, but this allowed for greater possibilities for travel within Korea. Because the courses were pass/fail when they transferred to USC, I was able to focus more on my understanding of the topics rather than simply getting an A, while allowing myself time to experience Korean society outside of the classroom.
As an international studies major within the political science department, the timing of my trip was exceptional. Soon after my arrival, Korea had a presidential election, which allowed me to observe campaigning techniques and provided the opportunity to ask about political attitudes among Korean citizens. Discussing politics seemed to be a bit taboo, so I made sure that I wasn’t too forward in my curiosity.
My favorite experiences in Korea often revolved around food and the people that I enjoyed it with. Eating was a somewhat communal experience. It was almost unusual to eat alone, and many dishes were portioned for at least two people, meaning my meals were filled with friends. My Korean friends continually introduced me to delicious foods, and I made sure to try everything that was suggested to me. Some of my favorite foods include 육개장 (yukgaejang/spicy beef soup), 산낙지 (sannakji/live octopus, and 게란빵 (gyeran-ppang/egg bun).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I spent most of my time in Korea exploring. I loved the walkability of the city and felt completely safe venturing out on my own, even at night (one of my Korean friends didn’t recognize pepper spray if that speaks to the safety at all). I wanted to see as much of Seoul as possible as each neighborhood had a distinct atmosphere from the next. My sense of direction is awful, but I could always tell when I had been to a neighborhood before, simply because the energy was familiar. I spent the majority of my time in Sinchon and Hongdae because Sogang University was situated next to them. After some time, I could navigate them with little help from KakaoMaps, and they felt like home. Sinchon was right next to my university, so I would often go there for food, to study, or to hang out with friends. Hongdae was a bit further, but I could easily walk through the Gyeongui Line Forest Park to get there. The park extended from the area around my university to Hongdae with restaurants and other businesses on either side of the path. The park was gorgeous (especially during cherry blossom season!!) and offered some relief from the bustling city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The majority of my ventures involved me wandering around palaces, temples, art museums, parks, and markets. I visited 창경궁(Changgyeonggung) on my 20th birthday to see the cherry blossoms and stunning arboretum. My friends and I went to 조계사 (Jogyesa) in Insadong to see lotus festival performances. I visited impressive art exhibitions in Seoul and Daegu, including a Salvador Dali exhibition in the DDP which I was ecstatic for due to my love of surrealist art. I visited parks like the Dream Forest (breathtaking during cherry blossom season) and Seoul National Forest. My friends and I tried as much street food as possible at the busy markets where people would cram at booths to eat and drink with friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Outside Seoul, I visited Suwon, Sokcho, Gangneung, Busan, and Daegu. My friend and I decided to visit Sokcho and Gangneung via express buses. The last minute trip was a bit of a disaster but well worth it. We arrived in Sokcho with no place to sleep, heavy bags, and a bit of heat exhaustion. Eventually, I managed to get a room for us with my broken Korean. We abandoned our belongings in the room and attempted to figure out how to go to Seoraksan National Park. We found the bus that would take us into the park, but the buses of Sokcho came far less frequently than in Seoul, making us think we wouldn’t have time to explore the park. An 아줌마 (ajumma/older woman)confirmed that we were waiting for the right bus and told me stories about her experiences in the park. That interaction made me realize how much my Korean had improved while abroad because I was able to generally understand the stories and encourage her to keep talking. I saw some of the most beautiful mountains I had ever seen in the park, and we hiked to the top of one of the peaks to a Buddhist temple. We ended the night on the beach, watching as friends launched fireworks. Overall, I don’t regret the trip at all, but by the second day, my friend and I were homesick for Seoul. We had similar feelings by the end of our trip to Busan and Daegu. We visited gorgeous temples (one of which was on the coast), beaches, Yeong Island, Gamcheon cultural village, and more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, I grew a lot over the course of my study abroad experience. I didn’t experience much homesickness (aside from when I would see my friends posting about the fun things they were doing or when my sister graduated high school) because I was too busy trying to do and see as many things as possible. It confirmed my plans to work abroad as I was able to adapt to a new country and culture so quickly and was genuinely happy to be there each day. Having so many interactions with new people and unfamiliar circumstances also fostered a sense of confidence that I didn’t have previously. Essentially, I am more trusting of myself to be able to thrive in new situations as well as familiar ones.

I am currently disappointed with myself. I thought I'd be able to adhere to my routine, that I'd be ready to submit my scholarship criteria, that I'd be comfortable with myself, that I'd be able to be steady and stay away from social media this year, but I've been lost in the last few weeks. I became stressed, sluggish, and unmotivated. I made a plan for my 2022 goals, which included social, physical, and mental objectives. But, as for now, I am not consistent to achieve my objectives. I often wonder if I only like the idea of having a goal, or if I like the idea of having a documentation, collection of my life, the thought of having a fantastic shape physique, or the idea of reading a book, writing a poetry, having a scholarship, or being a doctor. Perhaps I merely like the idea of such things, but anytime I am stressed or unstable, I just give up and become overwhelmed by the process of reaching those desires. One of my social goals for this year is to reduce my screen time and remain unnoticed on social media. But after two days, I find myself scrolling through twitter, instagram, and facebook again, although i managed to stay away from tiktok, and i guess that’s a great thing. I also managed to create a youtube video and hopefully a tumblr blog.
My physical goal for this year is to keep to my fitness regimen, but my legs were hurting after the two-day workout. I jog 5 laps every morning and wake up at 4 a.m., but the cold weather makes me want to stay in bed all day. I've also decided to take a break because I'm working on a room renovation project. And, with covid cases on the rise in our country, I should cut back on my walks. I'm scared that if I continue running outside, I'll get the virus and spread it to my family, so I've decided to stop FOR THE MEANTIME and focus on redesigning my room. I guess after a week or two, I get back to my routine again.
For my mental goal, I'll do some random art, which I'm hoping to be able to do while I'm on vacation and haven't started school yet. My major target this month is to be accepted by the scholarship that I've been preparing since last year. I'm certain that I'll make it, but there are two issues that I'm dealing with. One is that I still do not have a certified true copy of my grades, which is one of the scholarship's requirements. My university recently issued our grades using only our website, which lacks a school seal, and I have no clue where I can obtain an authenticated true copy of my grades. Second, I signed up for two scholarships, which is not permitted. I joined up for both the premier and basic categories by accident. I believed I was joining up for the basic category, but instead I signed up for the premier category, which was a mistake. I should just sign for the basics. This is causing me anxiety, but I want to get approved for the scholarship, so I'm taking steps to correct my errors.
I emailed my university to get a true copy of my grades, and I'm hoping to receive it before the scholarship deadline. Next, I'm heading to their office to inquire about my second issue with signing up for the two categories. I'll be there with my friends on Wednesday. I'm not going home until that issue is solved. I know I can do it. I'll be as polite as usual and speak professionally then thank them and depart with the problem resolved.
For social objectives, I'll be active on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook dump; there are just a few people on these accounts so maybe I'll find some serenity there. My main fb, dump ig, main, and dump tiktok will all be deactivated. Considering that the renovation of my room is a hectic undertaking, I'll take a break for my physical activities. I'll concentrate on my room. This article was originally published on May 23, 2020 and has been modified to reflect recent developments. It was revised on September 2, 2020 and again on October 27, 2020.
Elite Prep is committed to keeping you up-to-date with the ongoing, ever-fluid situation regarding the lawsuit against the University of California and its use of SAT/ACT scores in its admissions policies. Below is the executive summary followed by a detailed list of frequently asked questions with the latest changes.
Executive Summary
Thursday, May 21, 2020, was a momentous day in the history of the University of California. On that day, the University of California Board of Regents (the governing and policy-making body for the entire UC system) unanimously passed UC President Janet Napolitano's proposal to eliminate the SAT and ACT as a requirement on the UC application. Under President Napolitano's plan, UC was to adopt a test-optional admissions policy for the graduating high school classes of 2021 and 2022, then go test-blind for the classes of 2023 and 2024.
On Tuesday, September 1, 2020, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Brad Seligman added another plot twist to an already convoluted situation. In this decision, Judge Seligman ruled that UC's test-optional policy unfairly disadvantaged disabled applicants because they lacked access to testing centers with accommodations during the Covid-19 pandemic. Even though the ruling only took into account the perceived harm to disabled applicants to UC, the effect of the ruling impacted all applicants to UC. UC was prohibited from using SAT/ACT scores for admissions and scholarship consideration, effective immediately. UC promptly appealed the decision.
Then, on September 24, 2020, the First Appellate District Court of Appeal in California ruled in favor of UC's appeal. Consequently, UC is once again permitted to use SAT/ACT scores in their admissions decisions, effective immediately. However, four UC schools—Berkeley, Irvine, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz—had already opted to be test-blind for SAT/ACT scores, meaning they will not consider SAT/ACT scores even if an applicant reports them. The other five UC schools have decided to be test-optional. These test-optional and test-blind policies are in effect for the fall 2021 application cycle (affecting current high school seniors).
Read on if you would like more details.
As of this writing, for the graduating high school class of 2021, UC will be test-blind for four UC campuses and test-optional for five.
Test-blind means that even if you report an SAT/ACT score on your UC application, the score will not be used as a data point when deciding your admissibility. Currently, four UC campuses have a test-blind admission policy:
UC Berkeley
UC Irvine
UC Santa Barbara
UC Santa Cruz
Test-optional means that if you report a score on the UC application, and the score is favorable, it will enhance your academic profile and therefore possibly enhance your chances of admission. If the score is average or below average, the score will be neutral, not negative, on your application since colleges will not punish you for not doing well on an optional test. Test-optional is the ideal situation for the applicant. Five UC schools are test-optional for the high school graduating class of 2021:
UC Davis
UC Los Angeles
UC Merced
UC Riverside
UC San Diego
Why are some UC schools test-optional while others are test-blind? Doesn't the UC Board of Regents' decision in May affect all UC campuses?
Each UC school has its own admissions office, and even though all UC schools adhere to some form of comprehensive review, each UC admissions office gets to decide how to admit its own students. Some of the UC schools felt that a test-optional policy would disadvantage students who did not report SAT/ACT scores (or, conversely, advantage students who did), so they opted to be test-blind immediately. Other UC schools felt they wanted to give students a chance to show off academic ability through an SAT/ACT score. Also, not for nothing, the two most popular colleges in the US for fall 2020—UCLA (109,000 applications received) and UC San Diego (100,000 applications received)—are both test-optional. Schools with that many applicants will probably want more data points, not fewer, to inform their admissions decisions. The UC Regents' decision is a recommended course of action, not a mandate.
The ruling is most likely NOT the final word.
The First Appellate Court stayed the case, thereby reinstituting the possible use of SAT/ACT in UC admissions, but the trial that will determine whether use of the SAT/ACT in UC admissions harms students has yet to take place. So the status quo might change yet again after the trial takes place, or perhaps when the next legal motion is filed.
But for current high school seniors (class of 2021), the status quo is, for all intents and purposes, most likely the final word.
It is highly unlikely the lawsuit will be settled before the UC application deadline of November 30, 2020. So for current high school seniors, the status quo (four UC schools test-blind, five test-optional) is the law of the land. But should the wheels of justice spin faster than usual, or if the case is settled out of court, then perhaps a decision will be made before the end of November. But we doubt it.
What about SAT/ACT scores for the California State University (CSU) application?
CSU will not be using SAT/ACT scores in their admissions decisions for the freshman class of fall 2021 (current high school seniors).
So should I report my SAT/ACT score on my UC application?
Absolutely. As noted above, your score on one or more sections of the SAT/ACT could pass you out of certain general education requirements or qualify you for scholarships, so yes, go ahead and submit your scores. You have nothing to lose and potentially something to gain. And the test-optional UC campuses won't know about your SAT/ACT score unless you report it on the UC application.
Where do I report my SAT/ACT score on the UC application?
The UC application for Fall 2021 is available now. Go to apply.universityofcalifornia.edu and create your account (if you're a senior). On the right-hand menu on the website, you will see a section for Test Scores. That's the section where you report your scores. If a UC campus you're applying to is test-blind, then the scores you report on the application website will not be forwarded to that UC admissions office for inclusion in your file. However, your scores would be made available to the test-optional UC campuses, and to the UC school where you enroll in fall 2021 (for the purposes of passing you out of certain entry-level requirements.)
Should I pay for an official SAT/ACT score report to be sent to the UC schools I apply to?
We recommend holding off on sending SAT/ACT official score reports to UC campuses during the application season and only sending the official score report to the UC campus where you matriculate in the fall. So just pay for an official test score report once you know where you will be attending in the fall, if you do decide to attend a UC school.
If I'm a senior and haven't taken the SAT/ACT yet, should I still try to take it?
For high school seniors, Elite recommends taking the test if you can, and not taking it if you have to go way out of your way to find a testing center that is open. This is ultimately your family's decision to make, but in the cost-benefit analysis of "driving time to testing center" versus "what the scores will be used for at this moment" (admissions for test-optional schools and placement purposes), we view taking the SAT/ACT in the fall of 2020 as advisable, not mandatory.
Should I take the SAT/ACT if I'm a high school junior?
For high school juniors, the admissions test policies might change for you, depending on the outcome of this lawsuit. But if you are a junior and have a test date lined up for fall 2020, great. Go ahead and take it, especially if you've been preparing for it this summer. If your test date this fall gets cancelled, don't worry about it. You can try again in spring 2021. The next SAT test dates after the November test are December, March, May, and June. And remember, you'll still have fall of 2021 (August, October, November) available to you for last-minute retakes when you're a senior. So plenty of time to take the SAT/ACT. What remains to be seen is whether UC campuses will adjust their test-blind/test-optional policies when you are seniors.
The preliminary injunction points out that disabled students don't have access to testing centers with accommodations because of the Covid-19 pandemic. If or when Covid-19 quarantines, lockdowns, and shelter-in-place orders are lifted, doesn't that mean that the playing field is once again level for disabled and non-disabled test takers?
Maybe. This is one of the most open of the open questions in this whole affair.
If I take the SAT or ACT, do I need to sit for the SAT Essay or the ACT Writing section?
UC Regents also voted on May 21st to eliminate the SAT Essay and ACT Writing section as a requirement on the UC application, beginning with the class of '21. Currently, the only selective or highly selective college in the US that requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing is West Point. No other college or university—not even Stanford, MIT, and the Ivy League colleges—requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing. If you are in the class of '21 or '22 and plan on submitting an SAT or ACT score (as we recommend above), then take the version of the test without the essay—unless you are planning to apply to West Point.
What's this about UC creating its own standardized admissions test?
In the same board measure adopted on May 21st, Pres. Napolitano also tasked UC to come up with its own standardized admissions test by 2025. After the period of suspension (2021-24), UC is supposed to roll out its own proprietary standardized admissions test, which will aim to align with "the content UC expects students should have mastered to demonstrate college readiness for California freshmen." If UC cannot come up with its own proprietary admissions test by 2025, UC will go test-blind in perpetuity.
The Academic Senate's task force which investigated SAT/ACT in UC admissions policy also recommended that UC come up with its own admission test, but they estimated it would take 9 years to do so. In her plan, approved by the UC Regents, Pres. Napolitano has essentially cut the recommended timeline in half, almost daring UC to come up with its own test in half the time that it's projected to take.
What about SAT Subject Tests and AP Tests?
According to the UC Office of Admissions, throughout the period of suspension (2021-24), UC will still consider AP and SAT Subject Test scores.
Even test-blind UC campuses will still consider SAT Subject Test scores and AP scores.
This is especially pertinent to applicants to engineering majors. Typically, colleges of engineering would like to see an applicant's scores in SAT Math Level 2 and an SAT science Subject Test (Chemistry, Biology E/M, or Physics). And AP scores are still being considered, for all students regardless of intended major. The lawsuit is just about the use of SAT/ACT scores in admissions and scholarships.
How does the removal of SAT/ACT scores in the application review affect the way my UC application is evaluated?
When one data point is removed from the evaluation process, the remaining data points become all the more important. Those remaining data points are GPA, both weighted and unweighted; strength of class schedule, meaning the number of AP, IB, or honors level courses taken in high school; AP and Subject Test scores; extracurricular activities list; and the college application essays, also known as personal statements. Pay close attention to these components of your UC application now that SAT/ACT scores have been removed from the equation.
