“Gemma Augustea: A 2000 year old Roman cameo in an ornamented open-work gold frame, glorifies the deeds of Emperor Augustus and his successor Tiberius. It is cut from a two-layered Arabic sardonyx and is a masterpiece of the imperial gem workshop.”

Gemma Augustea -  This Roman low-relief sardonyx cameo was probably carved during the reign of Caligula: AD 37–41.  It shows the Emperor Augustus seated next to the goddess Roma, and both are trampling the armor of defeated enemies.  Its size and artistic quality make this the most precious cameo in Vienna’s collection of Greek and Roman antiquities at the Kunsthistorisches Museum.  Photo by Charles Reeza.

MWW Artwork of the Day (6/12/19) Late Imperial Rome (3rd c. CE) Jonah Swallowed (c. 280–90 CE) Marble sculpture, 50.4 x 15.5 x 26.9 cm. The Cleveland Museum of Art (John L. Severance Fund)
After moving through a late 2nd century "baroque" phase, in the 3rd century, Roman art largely abandoned, or simply became unable to produce, sculpture in the classical tradition, a change whose causes remain much discussed. Even the most important imperial monuments now showed stumpy, large-eyed figures in a harsh frontal style, in simple compositions emphasizing power at the expense of grace.   On the other hand, all forms of luxury small sculpture continued to be patronized, and quality could be extremely high, as in the silver Warren Cup, glass Lycurgus Cup, and large cameos like the Gemma Augustea, Gonzaga Cameo, the "Great Cameo of France," and this exquisite piece here, inspired by the biblical story of Jonah and the Whale.
After disobeying the Lord’s command to proclaim judgment on the city of Nineveh, the Old Testament prophet Jonah was cast into the sea and swallowed by a sea monster. Here, the beast swallows Jonah headfirst.
