Barbara Key's Gollyville quilt

Barbara Key's Gollyville quilt was pulled from the Art House's Carving Symposium and Art Exhibition on Monday 22nd March 2021. The exhibition is taking place over 10 days at the Art House and War Memorial Hall in Whakatāne, New Zealand.

'Gollyville Quilt'

The intricately stitched quilt took approx 1 year to stitch and was up for sale for $1500. The quit depicts the fictional town of 'Gollyville' in serval scenes that follow the golliwog characters daily lives.

What is a gollywog?

The Golliwogg was a black character in children's books in the late 19th century usually depicted as a type of rag doll. It was produced as a children's toy called the "golliwog", and had great popularity in North America, Europe and Australia up to the 1970s. The doll is characterised by black skin, eyes rimmed in white, large red lips and frizzy hair. But by the 1980s, it was increasingly seen as an offensive racist caricature of black people. Some people remember fond childhood memories of the dolls, whereas others argue golliwogs are a racist icon; a symbol of racism around the western world, due to its crude depiction of people with African roots. The depiction is seen as a derogatory racial stereotype. Police action has been taken against those displaying such items, on the grounds of incitement to racial hatred.

The article above documents the artists response to the removal of her work.

"I am in absolute disbelief that somebody could be so upset about something like that. I am sorry I have upset them, but I can't understand how a person can be so upset about it so nobody else gets to see it," Key said.

"We do not want to offend anybody and of course I am of the age group where we grew up with these without knowing," she said of the golliwogs depicted in the quilt.

"I mean years ago in my day we had golliwogs as toys, and nobody thought anything of it.

"I think people make too much out of things that are for children, but children don't even think about it.

"People are making mountains out of molehills and putting ideas in people's heads that were never there originally."

The artist's response shows an ignorance to the history of the subject of her work. There is a lack of thorough research to her concept or consideration for the audience. Although opinions vary and not everyone will always like a piece of art, the ignorance here differs because of the racial connotations of the subject. The artist comments on the ignorance of her childhood in which gollywogs were a popular toy but shows no development in her knowledge of the subject since then. Her apology can be taken sincerely and her depiction can be seen as reminiscent of her childhood experience - when the race of the doll wasn't an issue. on the other hand, the depiction can be viewed as ignorant and offensive. This is supported by the race of the artist - as a Caucasian woman, the racial connation's of this doll have never plagued her. This brings about the issue of appropriation and whether it is appropriate for this artist to be depicting black culture. The aim of the art work isn't to inform or debate about the dolls racial history, instead the piece is for the pleasure of looking at. This adds further objectification to the subject. The piece places the doll back into a context of entertainment and acceptance that it once had 40 years ago rather than highlighting the importance of change in racial discrimination.
