The Clutter Reports finally gets to Reviewing The Gunblaster Zoid

I built it. I (tried to) sticker it. Not it’s time to review it. The box is using one word so that’s what I’m going with, even though as indicated in the sticker article, most online sources make it two. okay i'm just checking- we're all on the same page with izaya's final fight with shizuo being a very clear allegory for a suicide attempt, right? like. without this parallel, izaya antagonizing specifically suicidal people has nothing to do with anything. he fears the afterlife. what business does a healthy twentysomething have with pondering death? he knows he won't live to old age. suicide for a religious cause (i.e. going to the afterlife, even if you believe it to be a positive experience) is still suicide. izaya's left disabled after it- it's very common for people to be left disabled after suicide attempts. i've seen people with facial scarring after a failed gunblast, i've seen people left in wheelchairs(!) after jumping and living. it's suicide, none of the people izaya's ever met up with have assuaged his fears about the afterlife, have given him an actual, concrete answer to the question "what happens next?" so he did what a lot of people too scared to do it themselves do- suicide by cop. he can ascribe as much meaning to it as he wants, about how he won't die, he'll ascend; weave this tapestry of meaning between himself and shizuo, wax poetic about their rivalry as much as he likes, talk about how this was meant to be and how fitting of an end this is.... but it's still suicide. it will always still be suicide, no matter how much he tries to convince himself that it isn't. and i don't think that's something he's prepared to reckon with.
