Different Types of Photography, Portrait and Fashion
Portrait is one category of photography, and the area I am most interested in. However, there are endless different types of portrait photography, ways of approaching it and styles in which to do it. There is also a vast history of portrait photography and I find it helpful to keep learning about what has come before, and keep looking at portraits from the beginning of photography until now.
Studio Portrait
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These images are by Sanlé Sory, a West African photographer. When we think of studio photography, we might think of something like this image below by Mark Mann:

But I think it’s good to think about different types of studios from different periods in history and different places around the world. I’d like to learn more about the history and tradition of studio photography in Africa. Not all studios are places with a perfect white or perfect black background. Studios can be set up in many different ways and can have patterned backdrops and fabrics, rugs etc.

Generally though, a photography studio is an environment in which the photographer can control the lighting in order to create a specific result. I don’t think though, that it does always necessarily need to be about controlling the light perfectly. I think a studio can also be about how it makes the sitter feel. I think a studio can be about a sense of formality and occasion, where the subject comes to get their photo taken. It is about a sense of arrival for the purpose of having your photo taken. And that idea changes how the photos are.
Fashion Photography
Fashion photography is about highlighting clothes, accessories and make up, but it can be so much more. Fashion images reflect the time they were taken in but can also move culture forward. Fashion photography plays such a huge role in our culture, in how we see ourselves, in what we wear, in the things we aspire to, in who we choose to admire. Who or what is heralded as attractive or glamourous can change, and does change when photographers and art directors and stylists make decisions about what those images look like.
Fashion photography is responsible for a lot of damage, both to generations of people’s sense of self worth and to the environment. It’s influence is so large and so powerful, and has been used heavily to promote products and make money.
But fashion photography can also be a tool to help us see possibilities, hope, change and empowerment.
The New Black Vanguard came out in 2019 and is a really powerful example of how fashion photography can help change how we view ourselves. Vanguard means:
a group of people leading the way in new developments or ideas.
“The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion by Antwaun Sargent highlights the work of 15 young black photographers and explores the way in which the rules of fashion photography are being rewritten by them. This book provides a beautiful overview of changes in the fashion photography industry, through a lense of craft and of representation.”

“With a history of blackface and cultural appropriation within the fashion industry, it’s important to represent the black figure through the eyes of people of color. In “The New Black Vanguard,” Sargent details this importance when discussing the art of self-representation and the power and beauty of the black figure. These photographers want to show the world their understanding of fashion and the black experience.”

Hamidou Maiga (Burkinabé, born 1932), Untitled, 1963, printed 2012
Gelatin silver print,  11 × 10 7/16 in., Gift of the Yossi Milo Gallery, New York 2020.8
“I always knew how to get the shot set up just right, the way they positioned the hands, the tilt of the head, the way they sat or stood,” recalled Hamidou Maiga. “I would really try to get to know the person in order to better represent them. I think the younger clients were my favorites to work with. They burned with the passion and enthusiasm of youth!” Maiga’s sitters often aimed to mimic their favorite movie stars or musicians in their posture and props. These two young men, with unlit cigarettes and defiant stares, are likely embracing the aesthetic and attitude of their pop culture heroes.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY MALI ! THE CLASSICS | HAMIDOU MAIGA Miss Rosen for Crave Online
Contemporary African art has come to the fore, giving us exquisite insights into the intricacies, nuances, and aesthetics of the oldest peoples on earth. But Africa is not a country; it is a continent as rich and diverse as the DNA of the peoples, who possess the greatest variety in the world. Its arts reflect this in whatever form they may take, providing poetic and philosophical vantage points by which we may consider a wide array of experiences.
Photography has been an integral part of the aesthetic landscape since its inception in the nineteenth century. Throughout the twentieth-century we have seen portrait photographers such as Malick Sidibé amd Seydou Keita rise in prominence, such is the power of their work to capture the soul of Mali on silver gelatin paper.
