‘People have actually said to me, and rudely, “Don’t you wish you could have done this when you were 35?” This is the truth: I couldn’t have done it when I was 35. I didn’t know enough. I hadn’t experienced enough. Every artist has their own personal evolution. I’m a very slow bloomer. These pieces are a culmination of that first lens, made 50 years ago. They’ve become more sophisticated and I’ve gotten better at doing them because they’re technically very difficult.’

For Artists on Art, Helen Pashgian speaks on The Magdalen with the Smoking Flame by Georges de La Tour. Helen Pashgian is one of the California Light and Space artists who, beginning in the 1960s, focused on vision and perception, often using plastics and other synthetics developed for the aerospace industry. Her sculptures are concerned with how light interacts with materials and how the viewer perceives this. Born and raised in Pasadena, Pashgian studied art history in Boston before returning to Southern California for its light. “In those long-ago years,” she has said, “I was slowly becoming aware of light as a ‘thing.’” Pashgian has since worked with clear and translucent acrylics and resins to achieve spectacular effects, most recently with large-scale discs that seem to hover in space, seemingly blending into the surrounding air. Her work was celebrated at LACMA in the exhibition "Helen Pashgian: Light Invisible"

LACMA Art+Film Gala
2022
The LACMA Art+Film Gala is a spectacular event that brings together the worlds of art, film, fashion, and entertainment. It is an annual celebration that showcases the seamless integration of visual arts and cinematic excellence. Supported by Gucci, the Art+Film Gala is a testament to their longstanding commitment to the arts. The red carpet of the LACMA Art+Film Gala is a sight to behold, as A-list celebrities grace the event in their finest attire. From stunning gowns to impeccable suits, the fashion choices reflect the creativity and individuality of the attendees. Gucci, known for its artistic collaborations, is often a prominent feature on the red carpet, adding an extra touch of style and luxury. Beyond the glitz and glamour, the Art+Film Gala serves a greater purpose. It raises funds to support LACMA's mission of promoting art and culture, ensuring that future generations have access to the transformative power of creativity. Through this event, LACMA continues to foster a vibrant artistic community and inspire a deep appreciation for the intersection of art and film.
The LACMA Art + Film Gala is an annual event that celebrates outstanding individuals in the art and film industry. This year, it was sponsored by Gucci and honored the filmmaker Park Chan-wook and the artist Helen Pashgian. The proceeds from the gala support upcoming exhibits, purchases, and educational initiatives, which is such a wonderful cause. Backstage, I had the opportunity to take some pictures with the incredible stylist and event chair, Eva Chow, as well as the stunning supermodel Kendall Jenner. It was such a surreal moment to be surrounded by such talented and influential individuals. On the red carpet, I felt like a true icon of grace and elegance. I wore a breathtaking black hooded dress by Saint Laurent, specially created for me as their global ambassador. The dress featured a captivating hood, adding a touch of mystery and sophistication to my look. The form-fitting silhouette and dramatic train added an elegant touch, making me feel like a princess.
To complete my ensemble, I carried a chic black clutch and wore a bold gold bracelet, adding a touch of glamour to my outfit. My golden blonde hair, styled with a one-sided braid, provided a striking contrast to the all-black ensemble. And my makeup was kept natural-looking, enhancing my features and allowing my innate beauty to shine through. Throughout the evening, I had the opportunity to mingle with fellow celebrities and artists, sharing our passion for art and film. It was a magical experience, and I felt so grateful to be a part of such a prestigious event. I also took some breathtaking photos on my hotel balcony, showcasing the stunning Saint Laurent gown against the backdrop of the LA cityscape bathed in the golden-orange hues of the sunset. It was truly picture-perfect! Thank you LACMA Art + Film Gala for inviting me to such a wonderful event. And a special thank you to YSL and Anthony Vaccarello for dressing me in this stunning dress. I am so grateful for the love and support I received throughout the evening.

Lecture: Art and Light/space (by Andrew Lavery) (5.9.23)
Phenomenology: “[It tries] to understand the way man thinks and to redefine his relations with himself and the world… [going] back to basics by describing things - phenomena - without trying to explain or analyse them… suspend[ing] all judgement and try[ing] to grasp things with a kind of primal intuition.” - Jan Butterfield (from his 1993 book The Art of Space + Light)
Examples of artists working with light and space include but are most certainly not limited to:
James Turrell:
“My work has no object, no image, and no focus. With no object, no image, and no focus, what are you looking at? You are looking at you looking. What is important to me is to create an experience of wordless thought.” - James Turrell

Best iowa Hawkeyes Basketball Shirt meaning:
The night was co-chaired by Leonardo DiCaprio (who, for the Best iowa Hawkeyes Basketball Shirt so you should to go to store and get this first time in the event’s history, was not present) and LACMA trustee Eva Chow and raised more than $5 million for the museum’s initiative to make film more central to the curatorial programming and funding LACMA’s broader mission. One of this year’s honorees, Helen Pashgian, known for spearheading the California Light and Space art movement of the 1960s, poignantly reminded everyone in the room, “I think you learn from your failures, I don’t think you learn from your successes.”

Helen Pashgian (American b. 1934). Pashgian is a Light and Space artist who works with clear casting resins to produce mysterious, semi-translucent objects. I would dearly love to see the top two works, in particular, in person; they appear to defeat the camera’s ability to record their complete form.
