Just saw the Mario Movie and I got a few things to say

1) overall, I enjoyed it a lot and referencing stuff from the games tickled my brain. It’s a fun movie and I wouldn’t mind watching it again

2) heLLO???? THE MUSIC????? FANTASTIC. Hearing the little iconic tunes are making me giggle lol

3) the animation is so pretty! I don’t know much about art, but I thought it was really really nice. Lighting was really cool and the detail on the world and characters was impressive

4) Peach was not being an insufferable “Strong Woman” like I feared. She was there doing what she needed to do and not making a huge deal about it. Thank you for that. She’s my main in smash and kart and I would die for her.

5) speaking of Peach, she and Mario did not end up in a romantic relationship at the end. They are partners, friends. If they were to get into a relationship in the far future, I think this is a good starting point to build off of.

6) and speaking of Mario, the guy was pretty cool. The Pratt man wasn’t terrible. I was iffy at the beginning of the movie but I was over it after a short while. I cringed less than I thought

7) I am so so so happy they didn’t pull a “What is this? Im the chosen one? But im just a dude” trope. Mario is just like, “ayo im a guy and im confident that I know how to do plumbing things and I love my brother.” Love that for you, Mario.

8) The Mario and Luigi’s brotherly relationship is everything to me. It was beautiful and all I ever needed in the franchise. I want more. And to get more, i need Luigi to be by Mario’s side and not trapped in a cage for most of the movie. Luigi is my baby and I love him and he’s doing great in every scene. I just NEED him to have MORE screen time.

9) up until this movie, I did not ship Bowser and Luigi, but now I’m considering it. They’re interactions were sus as hell and the chemistry was undeniable. That’s just the truth sorry not sorry

10) JACK BLACK WAS AMAZING AND HES EVERYTHING AS BOWSER AND YES MAN SING IT

11) I love Bowser with all my heart and he was so good in this movie

That was the BEST way to introduce him and I nearly went feral when it happened

Hey um. Saw the Mario movie trailer on my switch and it made me think to say a few things:

You are not a real Mario fan if you think Charles Martinet's Mario wouldn't work or would be annoying. He's a talented VA who's been voicing the character for 20 fucking years, have some faith in the man.

Charles Martinet also voices Luigi and Wario. I'm not saying he should have to carry two main character roles himself, I just think more people should know that.

Chris Pratt is a shit Mario and everyone knows it. It's clear he doesn't know jack shit about voice acting or Mario.

Unfollow the fuck out of me if you plan to see this movie without pirating it. I am so serious. It's clear you have no principles and no respect for the VAs that give life to the characters you love.

Literally everything else about this movie looks pretty cool and it's really pissing me off that they had to give such a dedicated person the middle finger in favor of nepotism.

This shit where they cast famous people instead of actual voice actors wouldn't happen if people just have their VAs proper credit, marketing, and promotion.

Sorry this is so long. I don't like to bother irls with this but it genuinely makes my blood boil to see the disrespect VAs face in the industry.

Let me remind you that Spongebob Squarepants has MULTIPLE movies and TV show seasons and so do MANY other cartoon characters with high pitched, cheery sounding voices. Charles, unlike Crisp Rat, is also a professional voice actor who would find a way to make his voice work for an entire movie.

Still in s1 of rottmnt but consuming fan content and wth why does the movie seem so angsty and trauma filled. I thought this was a fun show about silly mutant ninja turles with plenty of fluff and family bonding. I feel betrayed.

My Thoughts On The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Oh boy. :)

Well, 2022 sucked for me so far, but maybe 2023 will be greener.

I've wanted to talk about this before the trailer dropped yesterday, but was too slow.

I went into that direct with low expectations. I've been just...burned too many times to have high hopes.

Visually? It's gorgeous, but that's kind of expected. Not only has animation technology and skill advanced since 1985, but this is Nintendo. Mario is their Mickey Mouse. It'd be unrealistic to think this would look cheap.

Bowser sounds fine. Hell, he sounds better than fine. I didn't expect Jack Black to sound this good, but I guess that goes to show Jack Black's experience since he has a handful of VA roles and he really put his all into this role. I expected him to sound...IDK, MORE like Jack Black, since has a pretty distinct voice. And it's still there, but he REALLY sells me as the King of Koopas.

Also, just, RIP The Club Penguins. I can forgive Bowser kidnapping Peach for almost 40 years now, but I draw the line at him invading Club Penguin.

Meanwhile, while the Mario Bros. look fine-amazing even, their voices...I'm still not sold.

Chris Pratt is such a let down. He's not here cause of his acting ability or skill, if he brought any of that here. He's here cause he's Chris Pratt and Nintendo's trying to bank off the star power-lol. He's not doing Mario, he's doing Chris Pratt with a slight accent. I can ONLY assume he was going for a Lou Albano sort of interpretation as opposed to the high and flighty Charles Martinet.

But, like, no, it doesn't work. It's just Chris sounding vaguely like a Italian-American from New York. It's no different from your friend doing an Italian accent, except that maybe it's so subtle that he might as well not bother. And, I'm sorry, but this is fucking Mario Bros., subtlety should've been thrown out the window! Nintendo Voice Coaches my ass!

Plus, he was totally reading from a script during the direct.

Meanwhile, Luigi mostly screamed, so no comment on how he sounded.

In spite of the Bros. and their potentially poor voice work, I have high hopes for this movie. I am actually excited to see it. I hope this leads to a series of movies based on Nintendo's IP. A Metroid Space Opera, a swashbuckling adventure with Zelda, maybe a Rated R F-Zero flick (okay, that last one is wishful thinking, lol).

Okay I was gonna go without saying anything about this, but...I caved. I was planning to go my whole life without knowing anything about what really happens in the Mario Illumination movie, but I both got curious one time, and then just today, I had a trailer thrown in my face. Rant under the cut if you want to know my thoughts.

I could have skipped, but my damned curiosity got in the way of my mind. And now I feel like my curiosity in any IP I cherish is getting so irrecoverably punished. Because I saw a Luma, or this fake luma with a mouth, saying the most horrifying visceral things that I know do not belong in a kid's movie. "More meat for the grinder..." "The sweet release of death." In a way that did not convey some cheesy edge, but an actual declaration of violence through the screen. Like that character wad adressing all the viewers, and not at all in contextually appropriate ways. The disturbia, the disassociation i felt wss like reading a horrible mario fanfic but the author was a maladjusted teenager who was earnesy trying to threaten someone they know by invoking death words and mental images too gruesome for the material. If you've seen it, I am sorry, and you maybd have an idea of what I mean.

Just...between this and Bowigi, I am truly never spending money on a movie again. I can't. I just can't condone this. Nintendo has shat the bed for greenlighting this, I feel uncomfortable about how much responsibility Miyamoto and Charles Martinet have in these choices, I feel a deep chasm within myself being cast out from existence and being betrayed, and I wonder for what purpose did I reach out and connect with the Super Mario Bros as a series if somewhere down the line I was not to be repaid for that loyalty. I want Nintendo to just be a game company again. I want my most fond memory of completing Mario Galaxy to be honoured, not shat upon with Spark of Hope and this. Some people who I had respected were surely there, and someone had said yes to all of this...when they should have said no. I hate this so much. I have never known such engulfing hatred as this, and I lived under the thumb of an entire cabal of narcissistic relatives. But I made it out of that, somewhat! What about this? How can i possibly escape and cut ties with what I chose and what provided me such happiness for so long in my life? When did we all decide to stop having standards, and really ask for only the best renditions of what we know to be in our movies? I want Mario to remain pure, and not have that disgusting Pratt voice. I want Luigi and Peach to remain pure too, and not have wrong voices of their own. I knew Illumination was wrong to be collabing with the one company I've cared about the most. I want everyone to stop putting Bowser into uncomfortable forced relations with the human characters. I never liked how Peach was always shipped in porn-y ways with Bowser, and it is no better with Luigi. It may be even worse because I always saw him as so immensely pure a character, cut off from that! It's like crack shipping gone wrong! And do not get me started on the existential travesty I went through having to go through Bowsette.

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU ALL DOING TO ME, YOURSELVES, AND EVERYONE.

#I lived because Nintendo always struck me as a creator driven company #they made videogames and creative developers are the ones who make videogames so they're the ones who I wanted to work with #I thought for a long time they got the say in their organization and everything was fun there #Or that whatever excecutives were doing didn't seem like anything so detrimental in comparison to the projects and art being made #I even had my yearbook mentiin that my dream was to work as some kind of designer at Nintendo...to be a part of what I loved so much #And everytime I bought a game I believed the creative teams were getting directly supported #Now over recent years I saw the paradigm shifting to business suddenly having mire control over everything instead of the creator #The very reason nintendo as an entity has even stuck around to be cared about #Should the creators not be the ones directly compensated for their good work?
