so i want to try and get into fate but everything i see is super confusing and complicated and im seeing multiple different answers on where the correct place to start is. can you please help?

So I didn't realize how long this post had become until I finished it, so there's a TLDR at the end.

Ah, the forbidden question. Jokes asides since I'm not gonna say you have to start with the original Fate/Stay Night visual novel the visual novel elitists could find this post and all hell could break loose in the notes. Except for the fact that 95% of my followers seemingly don't care about Fate at all and I never give any of my Fate posts Fate tags to purposefully keep this blog away from that so hopefully we're safe.

I'm not gonna tell you which Fate to start with. What I will tell you is to start with whichever one you want. Do you wanna start with the original 100 hour visual novel? Go for it. You decided you don't have the time for 100 hours of reading? (understandable) Well guess what all 3 ways Stay Night can play out have been animated (Fate route is just Fate/Stay Night by Studio Deen aka Deen/Stay Night, Unlimited Blade Works route is Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works by ufotable, and Heavens Feel route is Fate/Stay Night Heavens Feel also done by ufotable). I actually won't recommend starting with Heavens Feel because it doesn't really explain the world it's taking place in, it kinda just assumes you already know that stuff from seeing either Unlimited Blade Works or Stay Night's prequel Fate/Zero. Hey look there's another Fate you can start with.

Have you decided you want nothing to do with that timeline? Well guess what there are several other Fates that have nothing to do with any of that. Fate/Apocrypha (team deathmatch), Fate/kaleid liner Prysma Illya (magical girls), Fate/Grand Order (mobile gacha game for your gambling addicted brain) the Fate Extraverse (Fate/Extra is an officially translated game for the PSP; you can play it on a "PSP" that's a bit bigger and sits on top of your lap or on your desktop though; Fate/Extra CCC is another PSP game, it's not actually a sequel however it does play off Fate/Extra, and this one was never officially translated and it's such a big game that it's not even fully fan translated; both Fate/Extella The Umbral Star and Fate/Extella Link are playable on PS4 and Switch however they both assume you already know Fate/Extra so I can't recommend these as good starting points, you should also play Umbral Star first since Link is seen as a sequel, Fate/Extra Last Encore is anime only and it kinda plays off of base Fate/Extra also).

Or what if you don't want your Fate to take itself seriously? Well there's Carnival Phantasm which has Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime, and technically Melty Blood characters. Today's Menu for the Emiya Family, has the cast of Fate/Stay Night but instead of suffering they just cook and eat food (very wholesome). Fate/Grand Carnival has some of the cast from Fate/Grand Order. Or fuck it and watch some Fate Abridged on YouTube (I recommend Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works Abridged by Project Mouthwash however there's spoilers in it). Will you understand all the jokes in these? No absolutely not, however they're still enjoyable to watch.

TLDR: Just start with whatever seems like it might interest you. Fate fucks with multiple timelines so anything and everything is possible and so all are canon. But because there's multiple timelines having a single timeline of the Fates is pretty pointless since most of them ARE NOT directly connected if at all. Just know that really the only direct connection between different Fates is Fate/Zero -> Fate/Stay Night -> Fate/Hollow Ataraxia. Fate/Extra can be done as a stand-alone story but if you want to take in the rest of the Extraverse you need Fate/Extra.

Inktober 2020 #14 - Armor

“What do you think?” the kid asked excitedly.

I looked over the giant robot. “Uh. You built this?”

“Yeah! More or less.”

The younger boy piped up. “Technically, he programmed his robots to build it for him.”

“That’s still me building it, though.”

I was impressed. I still thought the name Robomaster was absolute cringe, but it looked like he could actually back it up. “How long did it take you?”

“Most of last year and part of this one. You wanna see how it works?”

“I am pretty sure I’ve watched enough anime to know how giant robots work,” I said.

The little girl said, “Did you ever see Food Wars? That’s my favorite!”

Robomaster hadn’t paid any attention to me or his sister; he was busy controlling the robot with a remote. It lurched forward, one step, two. “I haven’t finished armoring it yet, though. It won’t be ready for an engagement until that’s done.”

“Which will be forty million years from now,” the little girl said. I couldn’t remember what she’d claimed her name was. Something slightly less cringey than either of her brothers.

Hydrogen Ice, whose name I unfortunately did remember, said, “Robomaster and I have been working together on some spiders. You wanna see the spiders?”

Arachnophobia was not a good look for henches. “Yeah, sure, I’ll look at your – holy fucking fuck.”

The kid was, like, 10. When I was 10 the closest I came to doing anything science related was one of those baking soda volcanoes. This kid had taken pieces of what looked like Barbie dolls and grafted robotic spider legs onto them. So the torso was a Barbie torso, the eight legs each had either a Barbie arm or a Barbie leg in the middle, and the spider’s head was a Barbie head, except that glittering toy gems had been glued all around the head like a real spider’s set of eyes. The Barbie eye sockets had been completely filled with gems. “These are real eye sensors!” Hydrogen bragged.

“Kid, that is the creepiest thing I have ever seen in my life, and I’ve been a hench for supervillains for nearly fifteen years now,” I told him.

“Thanks!”

“I helped,” the little girl said. I think she was like 8 or something.

“Now watch this,” Robomaster said, picking up a different remote and pressing it. The gem eyes lit up, and then the spiders – there was more than one, oh shit, did I mention there were more than just one? – started scuttling around, you know, like spiders do.

“Nice, kid.” I sighed. “But listen. You’ve got an incomplete giant robot without armor and some really creepy spiders. That is not gonna be enough to save your mom from the heewees. Why don’t you calm down and let her do her thing?”

“Because she’s gonna get hurt!” the little girl yelled. “We have to be there to make sure she’s okay!”

“Your mom told me to protect you kids,” I objected. “I am pretty sure that does not include ‘go to the bank she’s trying to rob and rescue her from the heewees’. Your mom is a very competent Umbral.”

“What’s an Umbral?” the little girl -- Dr. Criminy, right, ridiculous name for a kid but then, last I checked, kids weren’t supposed to be Umbral in the first place -- asked.

“A supervillain,” Hydrogen Ice, who really liked to explain things to people, said. “But it’s the word we use for ourselves. It means Shadowed, or having to do with shadows.”

Robomaster said, “Mom hasn’t been in the game for a long time. I’ve been reading the news. Heroes are a lot nastier than they used to be.”

“That is not making the case that I should let you go fight them,” I pointed out.

“All I need to do is put some extra armor on,” Robomaster said.

“I said no. You’re what, 12?”

“I’m 15!”

He didn’t look 15; he looked hardly older than his 10 year old brother. “Your mom told me to protect you, and that’s what I’m doing. All three of you are staying here.”

And that was what I thought was the end of that.

I’ll bet it surprises no one to hear that that was not the end of that.

the unsleeping city is my favorite campaign from a show called dimension 20!! it’s really really good and is sooo funny while having very complex and interesting plots :D it also has LOTS of lgbt and neurodivergent rep which is so important to me!! I love it so much gkdjf (also HAT STEALER SOLIDARITY! *high fives you*)

THIS IS PETE I LOVE HIM SO MUCH 💖💖💖 he’s a wild magic sorcerer!! he’s also the vox phantasma (voice of dreams) and has a deep connection with nod/the unsleeping city/the world of dreams

my s/i is the adopted child of the vox populi (voice of the people) Kingston!! he’s my dad and we’re very close! he’s very protective of me tho, especially from what’s beneath the umbral arcana (thing that separates the normal from the unsleeping city) at the beginning I don’t even know I’m not human >:O I’m actually a siren, and was abandoned when I was very little! Kingston took me in and raised me as his own

Kingston is also very good friends with Misty Moore who is a BROADWAY STAR and sort of an aunt/mentor to me (considering she’s an immortal fae who draws power from adoration and I’m well, an actual siren, her teaching me how to act and sing turned out perfectly!) Misty’s like my fun aunt who spoils me and maaaybe is a little bit of a bad influence >:D

after the gang has the clone fight in ep 2, Kingston comes home and explains everything to me (magic/the unsleeping city/the fact that I’m a siren) and I’m soooo mad at him for a while because “look at all the cool magic stuff I missed out on!” and there’s some good Conflict™️ but we make up later dw

the same day I learn about all that is ALSO the day I first meet Pete! he has no place to stay so Kingston let’s him spend the night, and we end up staying up late just talking. we both just got an ABRUPT introduction to magic (plus we both aren’t doing too good at the moment skgjd) and it actually really helped to just chat and relate to each other <3 also our banter is SO funny....I’ve actually written a little bit of our first meeting and it’s hilarious

(forgot to give context for this next part gldjg: the mafia boss has information we need, and his daughter is getting married, so we’re all going to the wedding as an excuse to talk to him!)

the next morning, amid the complete chaos of Ricky, Sofia, and Kug trying to find dates for the wedding, Pete just turns to me and asks “uh, do you just want to be my plus one?” and Kingston is like “DONT GET MY KID INVOLVED PETE YOU SUCK” and I’m like “YOU KNOW WHAT DAD? I AM INVOLVED SO DEAL WITH IT”

then I go to the wedding with Pete!! it was technically our first date gkdjf I initially agreed just cause I didn’t wanna try to woo a pigeon or pixie (and to spite my dad a little) but the talk we had the night before and how much we have in common made us already really comfortable w each other, and we bonded a lot at the wedding!! we both actually opened up quite a bit, in our own joke-y nonchalant ways, and had a really good time together (well, before we had to go fight the rat king in the sewers)

this is already sooo long I’m cutting myself off but THANKU FOR ASKING....ILY.....I’ve been thinking about all this nonstop so it’s wonderful to actually write it down!! I appreciate this and you so much 😭💖
