I had 2 thoughts about Tom Bombadil when we were reading about him:

One of the possible in-universe explanations for Tom Bombadil is that he is God. While this is good idea with all Tom Bombadil's singing and Illuvatar's connection with music, it is way funnier is Tom Bombadil is a different being. Like imagine creating an empty world out of The Void, and you look in and theres just Some Guy Vibing

All his nonsense singing reminds me a bit of that episode of Stellar Firma where Trexel is making up riddles but they end up steadily turing into funny little nonsense rhymes.

There's a couple of moments that we've read so far that will form interesting parallels later on (spoilers for the first time readers):

The hobbits feeling awkward carrying swords for the first time vs. when they return to Bree and Barliman is like "yeah, of course no one hassled you on the way here, you're all fully decked out in armour with swords" to which the hobbits are like "oh wow we forgot that was actually weird"

Strider and Merry meeting for the first time after Merry encountered a Black Rider vs. when Merry is one of the people Aragorn has to heal with his Kingly Healing Hands(TM)

Sam standing up to Strider when he first meets him vs. Sam's similar but even more defensive behaviour when they first speak to Faramir. I really love this one bc Sam is absolutely willing to challenge some Man who is almost twice his height and is skilled with a sword.

Also, this is less of a parallel and more of a common thread throughout the story but I love the frequency with which the hobbits have been meeting unexpected friends after leaving Bag End. There's a quote from Elrond when the fellowship is being formed about meeting "friends unlooked for" or something (I don't remember the exact phrase) and I love that this theme was set down immediately after the hobbits left

I find it very interesting that when the hobbits were like "tell us one of the Old Tales" and Aragorn chooses a comforting one in the form of the Tale of Beren and Luthien. In isolation, it's a good choice. There's hope amid hardship and people achieving impossible tasks with the power of love. It's very comforting if you're about to be attacked by evil creatures.

However, with the context of Aragorn and Arwen, you have to ask how many times has that been Aragorn's comfort to himself? How many cold nights in the wilderness has Aragorn spent imagining Beren doing the same thing? Does the successful taking of a Silmaril turn Aragorn's task of becoming King of Gondor and Arnor from "Impossible" to only "Very Difficult"? Or does it turn it into a sort of destiny that can and will be fulfilled? That he won't be stuck roaming the world alone for all his long life?

this morning or afternoon. i forgot. i mention how i have a lot to say, but seem to have no space or bandwidth to articulate it (it's tiring to introspect and unpack emotional luggage) but i was reading hot literati and i love how captivating short, simple, but intelligent her writing is. i aspire to write as crispy, fun, and me though as her.

i am learning to be gentle with thyself and i am kind of proud with how fast i learn through copying others and extracting only traits i find attractive and enticing into my own character/asrsenal loll. it kind of reminds me of that guy in food wars who copies ppl to the tee and then + his own cherry on top in the finale. kind of making it his, but not really bc 99 vs 1%

my problem is that i lack life experience and i isolate myself too much that im out of touch with reality. hence y im 24 sitting in front of my mac at almost 1am typing this, unemployed, and still acting like i am shi. im extremely delusional for this, but somehow i have a feeling things will sort itself out and ill be ok like i always wanted.

but the quote of being able to enjoy the moment and finding content and happiness in the daily or mundane keeps cycling back to me in this era. i think the universe is trying to tell me some.

i think i am content. and i am grateful. and i am ok, but not happy. i am v happy that i am ok bc for a long time this year i was not ok. i was actually extremely depressed and bed-ridden for months with occasional hangouts with eric that has secretly save me and directed me for the better. bc human interaction is important no matter how easy it is to be a hermit in the digital age and lock oneself in their corner of the internet (me, currently doing that rn (im a hypocrispy) :())

i no im a different person than before, maybe more lost, maybe more unhinged, def more fat. but i really dont know how much i have changed. howev, this year since i move back home has metamorphiszed me, and im not sure if its for the better bc i was undergoing one of the few intense depressive periods in life. i honestly cant say that it was my most depressing but all the hard ones always happen at home lol. its like a recurring epilepsy i have here. i have many intense depressive episodes that it seems that each new adversity i go thru that triggers this turbulence is easier than the past one. lol its actually crazy and it might explain why im ok even though i think most ppl might be wrecked by the frequent turmoil i have to navigate thou it often times is self-imposed i guess. but also this one was def a butterfly effect influence by years of adversion in treating mental health and not learning to deal with stress and responsiblities and pressure well. but i guess thats y im 24 and alive dealing, feeling, and not quitting:)

So

It has been brought bck into my mind that Brit (Emily, Samurai) said a few years ago that she thinks of Emily as Bisexual

Her reason was that she knew the show wanted to have the Mike and Emily set up as the main relationship in the show but she felt as though some of the things Mia and Emily did could be seen as date things and Brit and Erika still talk a lot so they made a joke about their characters and one of these include

'I think Emily and Mike just liked eachother because they were always together but Mia and Emily were always together too- so why don't we just say they date later on after Emily and Mike break up'

They kept that joke and soon got Hector involved which he was fine with because he also said

'Just to be clear the breakup was a mutual thing I dont want anyone not believing in love again'

And lets be real you cant convince me that half of Samurai rangers are in the community

So we all (on the live stream) were like alr sure 👍

do you have advice on how to remember and absorb from what i read? this is for more like recreational reading bc i always tend to forget afterwards. do you write notes or smt?

Yes, I always take notes: I underline quotes, I scribble down mythoughts, I highlight in different colours different themes, etc.  Then often after I finished reading the book,I wait a few days and only then come back to reflect on the material.

So, the first thing I would recommend is to create an accessible note-taking system, by which I mean away to keep organized all your notes (you can take notes however you want) ofall the books you have read (and deemed note-worthy). For non-fiction, I usethe notes I took to make a summary. This helps both my understanding and my retention,but also it makes it easily searchable and review-able. For fiction, sometimes Ipost the quotes here (usually when I have read the ebook, because transcribingthem it’s quick) and I do go back and scroll through my own tumblr. Actuallythe whole point of this blog is to be a collection of things that I have encounteredand somehow shaped what and how I think. If you are reading for entertainment,your notes don’t have to be anything in particular except what had impact onyou, the quotes you loved – this kind of thing.

Second, do take advantage of Goodreads.I often post a review that captures my feelings in regards to the book or thejudgement I have derived of it as a whole. A few words could spark yourrecollection of what the book was about. For the same purpose, don’t be ashamedof googling the author/the title/the summary of a book you have read but don’tremember completely. This is the other way I use goodreads. If you asked meabout all the books regarding a certain topic I have read, I wouldn’t be ableto remember them on top of my mind, but goodreads offers you the possibility ofkeeping track of all the books you have read. Perhaps you want to take this tothe next level and keep a blog dedicated to your book reviews (tumblr thencomes in handy).

If you read fewer books, and if you re-readthem regularly, you will retain more. I personally chose variety over depth,but I do highly encourage re-reading. Some books are worth re-reading becauseof the question they pose and they insight they give, some books are worthre-reading at different points in your life. The other day I picked upPollyanna again. I had this book practically memorized when I was a child. Yet,I forgot big chunks of it. And reading it now it’s a completely differentexperience. You don’t even have to re-read the whole book, but you can skim through it and read the parts you enjoy the most, or only review your summary, or re-read the quotes you have highlighted. There’s this great app/extenstion that “sends you a daily email resurfacing your best Kindle highlights”. (edit: I noticed I haven’t inserted the link, the app is called readwise, i will add the link tomorrow morning)

Above all, know that it’s okay. If you are reading for entertainment(but even if you are not), I don’t see why not being able to recollecteverything you read should be a problem. Forgetting is normal. I’ll leave you with a quote from “How to Talk About Books YouHaven’t Read” that I recently finished:  “Even as I read, I start to forget what I haveread, and this process is unavoidable. It extends to the point where it’s asthough I haven’t read the book at all, so that in effect I find myselfrejoining the ranks of non-readers, where I should no doubt have remained inthe first place. At this point, saying we have read a book becomes essentiallya form of metonymy. When it comes to books, we never read more than a portionof greater or lesser length, and that portion is, in the longer or shorterterm, condemned to disappear. When we talk about books, then, to ourselves and toothers, it would be more accurate to say that we are talking about ourapproximate recollections of books, rearranged as a function of currentcircumstances.”
