a return to square 1
now that we’ve all been thoroughly blasted by the Rise movie I can take another stab at being more thoughtful in designing Venus for Rise.
first, a refresher:
prologue | part 1 | part 2 | part 2 ½ | part 3 | part 4a | part 4b (ish?)
supplementary doodles: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5
just gonna go full AU divergence, let whoever Big Mama’s Assistant be whoever (after thinking it over, it does sorta seem to more likely it’s Jennika), still gonna keep her start as an initiate, acolyte-adjacent, monk-ish kid running around in the Hidden City, ward to the crow yokai who adopted her as a foundling.
We never saw who Draxum’s bodyguard was, they were alluded to during a crew discussion only (unless I missed a design reveal somewhere). in the same vein that me and a bunch of others I’ve seen that think Assistant is Jennika based... pretty much on those claws at the end of her hands, then the bodyguard could be mostly likely be Venus. i’m basing that theory on the very very VERY scant information we have from the show, 1) Draxum is adept at the mystic arts from magical item manipulation to summoning to.... I dunno, what do you call it when he set up the memory dive into Splinter’s mind? he can draw magic circles and operate them as seen when he had to move the boys to another memory.
2) dude wears Venus’ signature cyan post-team switch, can’t scream foreshadowing louder than that
3) Draxum straight up opens a portal to another plane to let the Hamatos go in and snatch up sword!Karai, original Venus taught the boys how to dreamwalk and guided them through a dream plane, ehh? ehhhhhh? *eyebrow waggle*
4) to me, the most record scratch, eyebrow quirking part: he uses armored bees just as Venus did in the original Next Mutation show. Venus’ armored bees and Draxum’s both were used to ensnare and trap opponents. though to concede, Venus’ exploded into a sticky goo, Draxum’s apparently auto-dug into the ground and sprouted as vines
the trip up for me in designing is what exactly “Draxum’s bodyguard” means. the first time I thought about it I had imagined as Draxum taking a younger Venus under his wing, teaching her (give or take realizing she was one of his anti-humanity soldier experiments), becoming his protege of sorts, prrrobably committed to his cause, becoming adept enough in both her mystic and physical prowess and takes it upon herself to protect him.. just real wuxia tropey about it.
but like... Draxum’s cool with hiring muscle, re: Garm and Freki so why wouldn’t he also just hire a bodyguard. it would make more sense this way but it depends on some characterization I’m shaky on for Draxum. he believed in his cause enough to go to Optimus, Arcee and Megatron (I forgot what those giant head characters were called only that their VAs voiced those transformers sry kids) for support. after that, I thought that maybe he’d be a little more discerning about who he recruits to bolster his plans which would be a little more lenient to my original idea.
...
fuck it we ball au divergence, wuxia tropey protege > disciple > adamant protector pipeline it is.

Now that we're entering into 2024, I'm asking some artists and writers that I follow:
1) What is the one piece you're most proud of from this past year?
2) What are some pieces that you would have liked more people to see? If you can include links, I'd love to go check them out!
3) What were your top three favorite pieces (art, comics, fics, etc) that someone else has made this past year?
(As always, no pressure to respond! Feel free to just ignore, or let me know if you'd rather I not send you these kinds of asks in the future.)
Oh this is fun! :D
1) The drawing I'm the most proud of this year is actually one I never ended up posting lmao, so I suppose this is the perfect reason to actually do that
Tumblr media
I always feel a bit self-concious about posting non-fanart drawings cuz they don't tend to gain as much attention. Which, I am fully aware that there are more important things than clout! But I am a simple woman, I crave validation 😔 Anyway, I am still very happy about how this one turned out. I very much prefer drawing characters over enviroments, which led to me being way worse at drawing enviroments than characters, so I've been pushing myself for the last couple of years to get better at drawing backgrounds and surroundings. While I still definetily have a lot of room for improvement, this illustration here is the best I've done in drawing enviroments yet.
2) Again, original stuff don't tend to get as much attention (which I fully understand btw, I don't wanna make it seem like I'm complaining too much, I very much appreciate any and all support I get!!!!) but this post with some doodles of my OCs as well as this random drawing of some forest with a big stone head lying in it are a couple of posts I wouldn't mind if more people saw so..... the links are there if ya wanna have a look 👀
3) Oh man, I've seen so many awesome artpieces this year, i can't guarantee that these are my actual top 3 picks, but here are some that I could remember liking (and that I also managed to find lol) (also these are in no particular order
This GIF was the first piece of RotTMNT fanart I ever reblogged and it's still glued to my mind it's just great honestly.
Man I do not like Timothy in the 2012 TMNT series at all but MAN do I love the way pinetreevillain adapted the character for the Rise universe! He's made quite a few comics of Rise!Timothy and he made the character so extremely likable I just hdsjhgjakfga also Pine's artstyle is delicous yummy yum go check out his art now!
I really like those reanimation projects where a bunch of people collaborate and reanimate induvidual segments in their own style, and there was recently one of those released that was a remake of The Clothes Don't Make The Turtle episode from season two of RotTMNT and it's great! Go and watch it here!

For the matchups if there's still room? I'm bi/pan, non-binary (she/they) and very extroverted. I love EDM, particularly dub and trap, as well as classic and heavy rock. I love to draw and do all kinds of crafts, particularly fabric crafts. I'm really into cyber/ravepunk and vapourwave aesthetics and basically my whole existence is rainbows. I have pretty bad anxiety and backwards seasonal depression, ie: summer makes me sad, winter makes me happy. I hope that's enough! Thank you!
I match you with...
Tumblr media
Donatello!! You two have a good amount of similarities when it comes to interests, and that’s initially what drew him to you! Your extroversion and positivity is also one of the big traits that appeals to him. You guys start off as friends, but over time it evolves into something so much deeper. He’s actually really caught off-guard when he realizes he’s falling in love. You’re his best friend, his partner in crime, how could he be falling in love with you?
I hope you like staying up late, because his best time to work is... at night! He loves staying up late with you while he works on his newest invention/research. You’re his personal DJ. <3 Wear that title with pride, because he’s super picky with his EDM.
Loves to mess with you when it comes to classic rock </3 If Dani California makes its way into your playlist somehow, he’s gonna fuck with you a little bit. The intro always makes him snort. Hit him with a pillow, do it.  And God help you if something like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, or AC/DC comes on.  “Pulling out the cowhand tunes, I see? 𝓑𝓵𝓪𝓬𝓴 𝓫𝓪𝓷𝓭𝓪𝓷𝓪, 𝓼𝔀𝓮𝓮𝓽 𝓛𝓸𝓾𝓲𝓼𝓲𝓪𝓷𝓪-“ “Shut UP” (He ‘yeehaws’ in a REALLY monotone voice sometimes, and it kills you every time. he sounds so apathetic about it.... ok king)
The heavy rock (and Queen) can stay though. He is Not Immune to Freddy Mercury. He’ll drop everything for Bohemian Rhapsody.
Loves your art! Whether its sketching from life, media, or from your head, he loves it. He keeps one of your pieces in his wallet, and one in the turtle tank as well. He likes those little reminders of you :)
He has an affinity for the three dimensional, so he takes a big interest in your crafts & fabric crafts! He’s done his own fair share of sewing, although he isn’t all too good at it. (He sucks at hand-sewing, and he’s impatient when it comes to the sewing machine. He thinks there’s a more efficient way to do it, and there just... isn’t. He has a lot of respect for people who have the patience for fabric work.) It’s nice to work with him in the lab.
He’s OBSESSED with vaporwave and cyberpunk. If you reflect that in your style... expect a fucking KISS. He thinks you look really badass. He definitely makes you some rad af iridescent clothing so you can get the futuristic look and rainbow look all in one. He likes to match with you, too. Matching jackets? Matching jackets!
(He also makes Shelldon a little iridescent accessory... family style...)  King of sticky-note reminders. If you take medication for your anxiety, he’s really helpful at setting up routines to take it and remember it. If it has any side effects, he’s also the first to recognize them and help manage them. If you get by without medication, that’s also cool! He’s great at recognizing symptoms of panic attacks or just general anxiety, and he won’t hesitate to get you out of a situation when you need it. He’s very straightforward when asking what you need, and the calmness in his voice is a little infectious.
I’m sorry, but he HATES the winter. He gets cold really easily, even compared to his brothers, so winter time is typically spent bundled up in his lab. And quite frankly, he might have undiagnosed seasonal affective disorder. But that’s actually kind of a good thing that you guys are reversed in that regard? Your happiness and positivity during the winter helps him out a lot. And in return, he’s 100% there for you during the summer time.
One of his favorite things to do with you is dance on the rooftops at night. There’s something magical about dancing under the all-consuming cosmos with your lover, guided by the light of the moon.
Nonbinary & Bi solidarity! He has both flags in his pen cup, and he likes to paint his cheeks & claws during pride month. He doesn’t have any pan flags since he IDs under bi himself, but he’s absolutely gonna find one for you! Pride month is so fun with him <3
You’re the first person to know when he makes a breakthrough in something! And it’s so obvious on the phone as well: his words come out so haphazardly, still riding the high of discovery.
PLEASE steal his hoodies, they’re so soft and warm. Plus, he’s legally obligated to kiss you if he catches you in one. It’s a win-win baby!!
Huge fan of casual handholding. He also loves kisses on the hand: giving or receiving! His face will be so red if you kiss his hands, do it.
[Hope this was okay!! I got so excited when I saw THE turtlemouse in my ask box <3 Like!!! <3 Sorry this took so long to post! D:]

i have a request- maybe something about mikey being in danger and all of his brothers worrying about him afterwards? sorry if this reqs sounds silly- i know little to nothing about writing, but your fics are AWESOME
@tenk0saur
Aw thanks! I actually love this idea!!!
Midnight Crisis
A ROTTMNT Fanfic
This hadn’t gone the way he expected…
Mikey had gone out late at night to get some fresh air (and to get some kind of new ideas for his drawings, art block was a pain), and the night had gone normal for the first thirty minutes. He had walked into the alleyways of the city to make sure that he wasn’t spotted by any humans.
Though if he thought about it, it’s not like anyone would have cared anyway. Everyone in New York had either seen or heard of mutants already, so he could walk into the streets whenever he wanted to.
What the box turtle didn’t anticipate was being ambushed by the Foot Clan.
It wasn’t that many soldiers; he could have taken them all he was sure, but the Foot Lieutenant kept making more and more paper ninjas, and Mikey was only one turtle. He swung his weapon in attempts to shred most of them, but since more were coming to attack, it wasn’t exactly an easy task.
The worst part was that he didn’t even tell his brothers where he was.
He shouldn’t even be out here right now. It was around midnight when he left, and who knows what time it was now. No one was awake at this time (well, maybe Leo was, but Mikey didn’t feel like checking), and since the box turtle was so good at sneaking out no one had heard him when he left. He wasn’t even sure that anybody would get up later; Raph and Splinter were such heavy sleepers that they probably wouldn’t hear if someone was in danger. Leo and Donnie did stay up late some night, but Mikey had assumed that Donnie was sleeping since he didn’t hear the sound of his tech whirling in the background.
Mikey was so deep into his thoughts that he didn’t realize a foot soldier was coming up behind him. The paper ninja punched the box turtle and sent him to the ground, making Mikey grunt in response. He rubbed his shell as he tried to make the pain go away.
“That’s gonna hurt later…” he whispered to himself. He looked up and his eyes went wide as he saw the number of ninjas that were around him.
He was surrounded… There was no way he could take them all.
Uh oh, he thought to himself. He could try and call his brothers, but there was no guarantee that they would pick up. There was also the fact that there were a number of paper ninjas around him, and he didn’t know if they would try and stop his call.
Mikey looked around and saw the Foot Lieutenant and Brute not too far away from him, and they appeared to be smiling. The Lieutenant made a couple more ninjas before leaving with his partner.
“What about the kid?” the Brute asked.
“Leave him,” the Lieutenant answered. “The ninjas can handle him.”
Mikey watched as they slowly got out of view, and he stared back at his problem. Fear started to rise up in him as the paper ninjas waited for his next move.
He was trapped.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As he walked into the kitchen, he stifled a yawn as he went to start up the coffee maker.
He hadn’t been up for that long, he only woke up a couple of minutes ago. Donnie planned to spend the rest of the morning working. S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N needed a new upgrade, and he might as well work on his other pieces of tech while he was at it. He looked at the clock as he drank his coffee, seeing that it read 3:23 a.m.
He was surprised that Leo wasn’t up right now. The slider normally had problems dealing with his insomnia, and Donnie would find him in the living room watching a movie in hopes of falling back asleep.
Donnie took his mug and walked back into the lab, stopping outside of Mikey’s room.
Huh… He didn’t see Mikey lurking around the lair when he got his coffee.
Raising an eyebrow, Donnie walked into his younger brother’s room.
“Micheal, you in here?” Donnie called out. He didn’t get a response, so he decided to check around the lair to see if his brother was just having a rough night.
That’s when he began to get worried.
Mikey wasn’t in the lair at all. Donnie had made sure to double-check each room to make sure (heck, he even triple-checked the box turtle’s room), but there was no sign of him.
Maybe Leo knew where he was.
The softshell took his mug and walked to his twin’s room, placing down the mug on the slider’s side table. He shook Leo in hopes to wake him up, smiling when Leo let out a grunt.
“The one time I get to sleep, someone has to wake me up…” Leo groaned. He opened his eyes and raised a non-existing eyebrow at his twin.
“Donnie?” he asked as he rubbed his eyes. “What is it? Do you need help with a project or something? Because I’m sorry, but I’m just not in the mood to work right now.”
“No, it’s not that,” Donnie responded. “I was going to ask if you knew where Mikey was.”
“Shouldn’t he be in his room?”
“If that was the case I wouldn’t be asking you where he was, now would I?”
Leo sat up in his bed and looked at his brother, worry slowly filling his voice.
“Wait, what are you saying?”
“He’s not in the lair, Leon,” Donnie responded with a frown. “I don’t know where he is.”
“Can’t you track his phone?” Leo asked.
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean it’s on him,” Donnie answered. “But it would give us a good estimate of where he would be.”
Leo got out of his bed and followed his twin to the lab. He watched as Donnie tapped into one of his computers, and he smiled a bit when Mikey’s image popped up on the screen.
“It looks likes he’s in some alleyway,” Donnie thought out loud.
“Well, what are we waiting for?” Leo said as he turned towards the exit. “Let’s go find him.”
“Shouldn’t we wake up Raph?” Donnie questioned.
“By the time he wakes up, Mikey could be in danger,” Leo replied. He walked out of the lab and went to his room to grab his sword as Donnie grabbed his techbo from his desk. He followed Leo out of the room, both of them walking towards the exit and into the city in search of their younger brother.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He was getting tired of this.
He was outnumbered. Every attack he would land on one of those foot faces he would get punched and thrown off guard. He had many bruises on his arms and legs, and he was starting to wonder if he could take any more of this.
He shouldn’t have left the lair. If he had just stayed in his bed and waited until morning, maybe Donnie or Leo could have gone out with him. He’d have someone with him, and he wouldn’t have to deal with this whole situation.
...What if his brothers never found him?
He was sure that someone had to be up by now, right? Donnie would wake up soon and start working on his tech, and he would have to notice that the box turtle was missing. But if that’s the case, why didn’t Donnie call him?
Mikey was then punched by another foot ninja and sent to the ground, and he decided to look at his phone to see if he had any messages. He glanced up before he did and knocked one of the oncoming ninjas away from him to buy him time.
“Of course…” Mikey groaned. “It had to die now, didn’t it?”
He threw his phone back in his pouch and stood up as he fought more of the foot.
Hopefully, his brothers would find him soon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“He should be around here somewhere,” Donnie muttered as he jumped down from on top of one of the buildings.
“I don’t see him,” Leo said with a frown. “Are you sure your tech is correct?”
“My tech is never wrong,” Donnie scoffed. “Well, most of the time it’s never wrong…”
Just then the twins heard a faint voice and looked behind them, trying to find the source of the noise.
“Something tells me that he’s over there…” Leo pointed. Both turtles ran over to see who had yelled out and they stopped once they saw the scene before them.
Mikey had been ambushed. And by the looks of it, he couldn’t take any more hits.
Donnie took out his techbo and charged at the foot soldiers as Leo went for Mikey.
“Miguel, you ok?” Leo asked as he pulled Mikey out of the fight, hitting a couple of ninjas as they went for him.
“Yeah... yeah, I’m fine…” Mikey answered.
“What were you thinking?!” Leo questioned with anger (though he was mostly concerned). “Why did you leave, let alone not tell anyone?”
“I just wanted some fresh air,” Mikey responded, wincing as his bruises began to hurt. Leo noticed and sat Mikey down against the wall as he looked at his brother with worrying eyes.
“Stay here,” he told the orange masked turtle. “I’m gonna go help out Donnie.”
Mikey watched as Leo went and fought the remaining foot soldiers, though it didn’t seem like Donnie needed help. Once they had finished them off and made sure there were no more, they both went to inspect Mikey’s wounds.
“Do you know how much danger you could have gotten into?!” Donnie asked. “If I didn’t wake up and realize you were gone, who knows what would have happened to you!”
“I know…” Mikey said quietly. “I’m sorry, Dee.”
“At least tell us where you’re going next time,” Leo sighed. “Or better yet, just wait until morning.”
“Let’s get going,” Donnie said as he helped Mikey up. “I need to check and see how badly you got hurt once we get back to the lair.”
Leo began to walk in front of the two brothers and Mikey followed behind, stopping when he felt Donnie tap his shoulder. Mikey turned around and frowned once he saw Donnie with his arms crossed.
“Donnie, I know you’re mad,” Mikey started. He looked at the ground as he continued. “And I’m really sorry, I won’t-”
Mikey startled at the sudden hug he was giving. He looked up at his genius brother in confusion.
“You really had me worried Michael,” Donnie whispered. “I don’t know what I would have done if you were hurt more than you already are.”
Mikey smiled softly and leaned into his brother’s hug.
“I see you’re getting better at managing your feelings,” Mikey chuckled. He began to laugh as once Donnie groaned.
“No one told me we were hugging now!” Leo exclaimed as he got into the hug as well. “I was wondering why I didn’t hear you guys behind me.”
“Ok, hug over!” Donnie said as he pulled away from his brothers. “We gotta get back to the lair.”
Mikey laughed as Donnie and Leo walked in front of him.
He always knew Donnie could express his feelings. Maybe he should do more sessions with Dr. Feelings, just to make sure the softshell was improving.
Her day has sucked, to put it simply.
She hasn’t slept in three days, her moronic colleagues have repeatedly misidentified her and then arrested her, and there is the case her captain had given her. Three days ago. A clear
example of causation and correlation. Off the bat, Donna’s captain did not like her which is why he gave her the hardest case assignment.
The suspect had an array of crimes from arson to burglary to forty-seven unpaid parking tickets. She is not even sure how the suspect managed to get the tickets as they do not seem to have a car. She’s got a feeling that the tickets were pinned onto them by the other detectives. There are a lot of vehicles parked in front of the fire hydrant and in no parking zones in the few blocks surrounding the building.
Donna, at least, has a vague sketch corroborated from several witnesses from the past two years.
Species: some form of tree frog yokai.
Identifying Features: facial stripes (color unknown).
Profiling Traits: Likes to make jokes; shorter.
There was one arrest but it turned out to be a blue-clad turtle mutant whose rat and boxshell lawyers bailed out.
Donna takes a sip of the bitter coffee from the old coffee and newspaper stand near her apartment. She winces as the hot liquid spills on her whiskers.
Her desk is cramped with hastily scribbled crime reports and a half-eaten bagel. There is the sketch artist’s most current rendition of the suspect to the right. Coffee rings stain some of the documents from the detectives before her who worked the case.
There is a notepad under her arm with a list of criminals who fit the description of the suspect. Setting down her cup, she crosses off Dastardly Danny, Loathsome Leonard, and Malicious Mikey. Plus a few more from the process of elimination of using good eyesight.
The phone rings as her eyes begin to water from staring too long at all of the paperwork.
Sighing heavily, Donna answers the phone, “This is Detective Donna of the Hidden City Police Department.”
The caller chatters into the speaker something about a museum, art pieces, and a short frog intruder. Quickly writing down the address of the museum, she slams down the device into its holder. Tan coat thrown over her grid-patterned dress, she gathers up her documents, shoves them in her non-regulation backpack, and heads out of the station.
—————————————————————
A whisper bounces around the metal vents. “Well shit. This isn't good.”
Feet slam into the grate with a resounding thud.
Nothing. Not a single screw budges from the force of the kick.
Black sceleraless eyes shut in frustration. His exit of the back stairs of the museum mocks him through the slats of the grate cover. He yanks the bag to him and ties the mask around his eyes more securely. Grabbing a flashlight from one of the bags around his waist, he shines a light to the way he came. He ruffles through another bag and pulls out a map of the ventilation system. The paper becomes illuminated as he mumbles to himself.
“Okay, okay so I need to go back and up to the level of vents above me and take a couple of right turns to get to the other exit vent. A story above me. With the alarms blaring and alerting the cops. Super.”
He takes a deep breath in and with the extra wiggle room that comes from being small and short, he turns himself around along with the bag full of stolen art pieces.
I tried my hand at writing an exposition scene with Ronan & Donna for @boo-that-ghost !
PHOTO MANIPULATION
I have used two pictures for this project which I clicked with my Camera – Canon ES 200D with EF-S18-135mm f/3 lens. Both the pictures are of historical context from where I belong to, India.
THE TAJ MAHAL
The first photograph is of one of the seven wonders of the world - Taj Mahal, an ivory white-marble monument located in the Indian city of Agra. It was built in the year 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The Mahal includes a mosque and a guest house and is surrounded by lush green gardens on its three sides, and river Yamuna at the bank. The Taj Mahal was also listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983 for being “a masterpiece and jewel of Muslim art”. I chose to add this photograph to my assignment because it is a symbol of eternal love and the world is in extreme need of the same right now.
The picture was clicked using a specific setting in the camera with an exposure of 1/1600 seconds at f/4.5 ISO 100 and focal length of 42mm. The picture dimensions are 6000 X 4000. I edited the photograph to make the beautiful monument look more attractive and appealing to the audience.
Original Photograph -
Tumblr media
The editing was done using Adobe Lightroom. Following are the changes made in order to edit the image:
·      Crop Overlay: Angle – Auto (+0.05)
I used this function in order to get straight verticals and horizontals. It helped me to maintain balance in my composition.
·      Cropped: 5900 X 3995
I cropped the image to this specific dimension to crop out the extras, a little of the sky from top and cut-off tree on the right. There was not a lot of cropping done because I thought I was not needed.
·      Exposure: +0.21
There was a little change made in the exposure to make the picture brighter. Only a small change was made because the picture was taken on a bright sunny day, therefore it was not significant to make a large change.
·      Contrast: +25
The contrast is different tones in an image. It is used to highlight the main subject of the photograph and convey the moods through your picture. I did set up the contrast to +25 to give the feeling of high energy and strength of the love symbol.
·      Highlights: -73
These are used to redefine the highlights in a photo. I reduced the same to decrease the brightest area (sky with sunlight) and put more focus on the subject, the Taj Mahal.
·      Whites: +48
The white balance had to be increased to remove the unrealistic color casts as the subject is white itself. To render white in the photo I had to increase the same to 48.
·      Vibrance: +7
I increased the vibrance a little to prevent the color tones from becoming unnatural and overly saturated. This made the photo look more realistic.
·      Saturation: +17
Increasing the saturation was done to increase the feel of vividness and intensity of colors in the photograph. As the picture contains a smaller number of colors, the saturation had to be increased in order to produce a non-calming effect and make the picture more eye-catching.
·      Post Crop Vignetting: +2
A little of this feature was used to adjust the crops I made in the beginning of my editing. It darkened the image corners a little as compared to the inside of the picture. This made the subject come out sharper.
THE UDAIPUR PALACE
The second photograph is of a palace known as “Jag Mandir” built on an island in a city named Udaipur in the Indian State of Rajasthan. It was built in the year 1551 for the royal family of the city. They used the Jag Mandir (Palace) as a resort for vacations or parties. It is a very ancient building but editing makes it look as new as a day.
The picture was clicked using local exposure settings in Canon EOS 200D with EF-S18-135mm f/3 lens with an exposure of 5.0 seconds at f/4.5. The focal length of the camera was set to 35mm and the picture dimensions are 6000 X 4000.
Original Photograph -
Tumblr media
The editing was done using Adobe Lightroom. Following are the changes made in order to edit the image:
·      Crop Overlay: Angle – Auto (-0.42)
I used this function in order to get straight verticals and horizontals. It helped me to maintain balance in my composition.
·      Cropped: 5139 X 3311
I had to crop out quite a bit of the picture as I had to focus on the main building of the Palace. This reduced the dimensions to 5139 X 3311.
·      Exposure: +1.19
The picture was taken at nighttime, therefore the exposure had to be increased to make it look brighter.
·      Highlights: -100
These are used to redefine the highlights in a photo. I reduced the same by 100 points to reduce shadows and give more significance to the lights reflecting in the water.
·      Whites: +74
The whites were increased to decrease the unrealistic colors in the photograph.
·      Clarity: +10
Increasing the clarity is a very important step as it helps sharpen your image, especially subject. I increased it a little and that helped in improving the texture of the image (reflections of light in water were the main focus).
·      Post-Crop Vignetting: -7
The outlining of the image had to be reduced because the image is already dark so if the borders are light, the centre comes out to be more attractive.
·      Dehaze: +5
In order to reduce the amount of haze and mist in the image, this function had to be used.
EDITED IMAGES CAN MISGUIDE THE AUDIENCE
According to the article, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical reproduction” it is known that these days art is being mechanically reproduced which could affect the audience in any way, negative or positive. The digital softwares now available for editing photographs can make a regular piece of image, a breathtaking one. This is being misused by some people whereas some people are using the same tremendously and producing precious pieces of art.
Talking about my two photographs, it could be deceiving for the audience till a certain extent. I edited both the images by using Adobe Lightroom and it definitely made the pictures look way more attractive. The Taj Mahal is not that white in reality as it looks like in the edited picture. In the same way, the Udaipur Palace is not that pretty, bright, and clean as it seems in the edited photograph. These pictures could be used to promote travel to these places. Therefore, the edited images could confuse and misguide the audience if they can’t see the originals. This will be a benefit to one group (monument tourism) whereas disadvantage to the other group (travellers).
PRESS PHOTOGRAPHS
Press photography is that type of photography which covers stories and images for current events or real occurring. My edited images cannot be used as press photographs as edited images do not reflect the truthfulness behind the photograph and can misguide the audience. The press uses the images with certain requirements with the aim of making the image look attractive to a larger percentage of the audience. Therefore my original photographs also cannot be of great use to them as they do not have the right focus, angle and colour needed for press photography.
If there is any news related to the monuments they would then be capturing the reality and using the latest image and not my photographs.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ART AND PRESS PHOTOGRAPHY
According to the Module 5 learnings, I came to know about the differences between types of photography and the grounds for those differences. Some photographers claimed to be artists and painters and wanted photography to be accepted as art whereas some photographers took their cameras to battlefields and started recording reality. This made the difference between these two types of photography. Some wanted to capture the unknown realities of life whereas others just treated photography as an art.
Art Photography is more artistic and expresses the creative vision of the photographer as compared to Press Photography which has an objective of capturing real events and life stories, following the rules and principles of journalism.
Fandom Mashups Are On The Rise
Fact: Two fandoms are better than one. When your favorite fictional worlds collide, it’s a mashup made in fandom heaven. Fandom mashups are becoming more popular, with crossovers popping up in TV shows and movies, fan art, original cosplays, and even new collectibles, making pop culture hybrids a top trend in the geek world.
Fandom mashups have such a powerful impact because they join together two groups of extremely passionate fans — or two halves of your own geeky heart. While products and entertainment moments that feature themes from two separate worlds may be a little more niche —  not every Dungeons & Dragons fan would get schwifty with Rick and Morty — they have the ability to draw fans from one property into another. And the most accessible way for companies to pull off this concept is with gotta-have-it merch — and lots of it. With the right properties and the right fan bases, the collaborations can be seamless and maintain the integrity of each brand.
Take FOCO’s line of Game of Thrones MLB Bobbleheads, for example. The cross-licensed series pairs Major League Baseball players and mascots with Game of Thrones characters and settings. The first series merges three distinct bobblehead styles — the Iron Throne, the Night King, and the Ice Dragon Viserion — with mascots and branding from all 30 MLB teams.
“We definitely think it’s an emerging category, this cross-licensed mashup that we’re going to explore,” says Matthew Katz, licensing manager at FOCO. “… We tried to make sure we had the right balance. You don’t want to go too far one way or the other because you want to capture the people who are superfans of either baseball or Game of Thrones, and then capture those people in the middle as well.”
The bobblehead collaboration started off as a partnership for MLB’s theme nights, during which every fan who walks through the stadium gates gets a promotional item, like a bobblehead. The promotion opened the door to a conversation on how to expand at retail, especially for people who couldn’t make it to the promo nights or desired a more high-end collectible than the ones handed out at the games.
A unique aspect of pop culture mashups is that it gives the creators a bit more freedom in playing around with storytelling. The Night King was an ominous Game of Thrones villain, but he’s a bit more lighthearted when he’s wearing team-themed armor and ditching his spear for a baseball bat made of ice with the team’s logo on it.
“Developing a non-traditional product line like this gives a fresh perspective and allows a fan who has love for both brands to get a refreshed look,” says Josephine Fusezi, MLB’s vice president of global consumer products. “Being able to play with key elements from both baseball and Game of Thrones gives the consumer something different and refreshing. It also gives us an opportunity to have a little fun with our fans.”
Response to the first bobblehead series was so positive that FOCO quickly developed a followup series in just six weeks, featuring characters such as the direwolf, the Kingsguard, and a White Walker, available now for preorder. New MLB theme nights began in June for a Netflix Stranger Things collaboration, too.
Fans will also know exactly who to call with Hasbro’s new Ecto-1 Ectotron figure. The Transformers universe already has heroic Autobots, evil Decepticons, and now ghosts! The iconic Ecto-1 Cadillac from the 1984 Ghostbusters movie is now a Transformers robot — a converting Paranormal Investigator called Ectotron. The figure comes with its own Proton Pack and Slimer accessory, and it converts between Ecto-1 and robot in 22 steps.
This year marks the 35th anniversaries of both Transformers and Ghostbusters, making it an ideal year to combine the best of both franchises. A five-part origin story from IDW Publishing will also be available this year, giving fans insight on Ectotron’s background.
“Brand anniversaries not only allow us to celebrate a franchise, but we can also tap into nostalgia around a brand,” says Tom Warner, senior vice president for the Transformers franchise at Hasbro. “The Transformers and Ghostbusters brands are filled with waves of millennial nostalgia as new parents share the toys and brands they loved as children with their own kids.”
Ectotron preorders sold out within 24 hours after the figure was revealed at Toy Fair New York in February, so additional preorders were made available. Fans should also be on the lookout for other potential Transformers and Ghostbusters collaborations soon, according to Warner.
“On the surface, the Transformers and Ghostbusters franchises may seem vastly different; however, they share more in common than one may expect,” Warner says. “Both have two passionate fandoms, sharing a mutual bond over out-of-this world storytelling rooted in science fiction. When combining both worlds, our goal was to create stories and a product that stays true to the origins of both brands.”
The Avengers movies are probably the most well-known, most popular crossovers, but they weren’t the first. Think of all the “most ambitious crossover event in history” memes that circulated around the time that Infinity War came out — and how we were reminded of Disney Channel’s That’s So Suite Life of Hannah Montana, which came out in 2006, or 2003’s The Rugrats Go Wild, in which the band of babies met Eliza and her family from The Wild Thornberries, on Nickelodeon.
Entertainment crossover content is so successful because fans of these franchises can see all of their favorite characters interacting in situations they normally wouldn’t, like when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles visited Gotham in Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2019). In this movie, the heroes in a half-shell and the Dark Knight team up when Shredder joins forces with Ra’s al Ghul, and all of the heroes need to work together to defeat the combined might of the Foot Clan and League of Assassins.
These crossovers can also span multiple age groups, such as Sesame Street’s “Respect Brings Us Together” campaign. Two commercials launched in April featuring Elmo and Cookie Monster, one of which starred the notably at-odds Lannister siblings from Game of Thrones. And if anyone can convince Cersei and Tyrion Lannister to get along, it’s Elmo.
Fan demand for this type of content is loud and clear, as is the case with The CW’s DC Universe. The network has created crossover content yearly since 2014 through its DC TV shows, starting with Arrow and The Flash. At the time, in December 2014, the two-part Arrowverse crossover between the two shows was the most-watched December telecast in seven years for the network, and the most-watched episode for both shows since their respective series premieres.
In 2016, the network’s #DCWeek event delivered The CW’s most-watched week in six years, featuring a four-night DC crossover between Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. The CW’s fifth-annual Arrowverse crossover last year, Elseworlds, introduced Gotham City and Batwoman into the mix, and concluded with a tease of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, set to air this fall.
The ratings for The CW’s crossover events clearly show that fans crave this content, and it’s safe to say we can expect more of it in the future.
Pop culture mashups also come from the most important community: the fans themselves.
While manufacturers and entertainment companies have the power to bring pop culture mashups to the masses, fans can express themselves through cosplay and fan art — without the shackles of licensing rights getting in the way. And here, creativity is key. Out-of-the-box fan mashups, including one-of-a-kind cosplays and stunning illustrations, all have one thing in common: They fuse two things that would likely never be together otherwise.
Eric Proctor is a digital artist at TsaoShin who draws vibrant fantasy pieces, with a heavy focus on pop culture artwork. His gallery features bright, fun, and whimsical pieces that incorporate characters, such as Stitch from Lilo & Stitch and Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon.
“For me, the crossovers are a Venn diagram where the two circles completely overlap of things that I absolutely love,” Proctor says. “So, any crossover that I’m currently doing is going to just be just that I love A and I love B, and I’d love to see A and B together.”
Proctor is currently working on an ongoing Grumpy Cat and Disney series, which had accidental roots. Proctor bought a new rig and tablet for his illustration setup and was practicing with his new equipment. He sketched out the iconic The Little Mermaid scene in which Ariel is singing on the rock with water splashing around her, and because he doesn’t like drawing people, he drew in Grumpy Cat as a last-minute decision. He showed it to his friends, expecting to delete it, but then people asked him what Disney scenario he was going to put Grumpy Cat into next — and the series was born.
“I say that I love both of those things, but one of the things I felt so guilty about making that particular series is that I really, really love Disney, but I’m putting Grumpy Cat in a scenario where it’s just ruining it,” Proctor says. “It’s this little bit of dark humor where you’re like, ‘I really love Disney, but honestly if Grumpy Cat was in it, this is probably what would happen.’ So it’s taking something that’s a little sacred and then ripping it to shreds a bit. I think the humor was one of those things I had to play around with.”
Proctor is currently working on his next Grumpy Cat Disney installment, a Cinderella-themed piece titled “Bippidi Boppidi No.” It will show the scene from the animated film in which the fairy godmother grants all of Cinderella’s wishes, but with everything completely ruined, such as a pumpkin dress, Lucifer the cat being the size of a horse, and other mishaps.
“It’s one of those situations where it’s so easy to imagine a lot of those crossovers together; they seem so real and fitting that it just feels like a marriage of two ideas that you’ve enjoyed both of those things so much,” Proctor says. “For me personally, when I look at a crossover that just succeeds so well, I just get so happy because someone else saw the thing that put those two things together and they made that real.”
With pop culture mashups, fans get to express themselves in a whole new way, and manufacturers and entertainment companies are taking note of the increasing fan demand and creative potential. The possibilities are limitless.
