Linda I love you but are you trying to kill me … that’s so many Top 5’s! But alright, I’ll do my best! (Answers will probably switch between German and English RIP to every non-German-speaker who follows me and wants to read this for some reason I swear I’m normal)

WRITING MEMORIES

5.) The entire time I spent finishing my first (second?) longer writing project It was the year 2012 and it was a cyberpunk story about my friends’ and my edgy self inserts riding dinosaurs, fighting aliens and being badass. The plot twist in the end was that my character was secretly evil and wanted to kill everyone. (Things to show your therapist) The final boss fight made zero sense and also everything was incredibly weird and stupid. But sometimes I still think about those times when I sat in my grandma’s living room at night, eating chips and listening to Vocaloid covers while thinking this story was the coolest shit ever. Truly simpler times.

4.) Researching something about universities in Texas for OvF on a rainy Saturday afternoon I have no idea why this memory is still sticking with me to this day (I think it was around 2016 or something?), but I remember that it was just a really nice day and I felt really at peace at that moment?

3.) The entire writing process of Bathroom Blues It was such a spontaneous project and I still have no idea how I managed to power though it in just a little under two months! Also it was just incredibly fun seeing you getting excited over new drafts and I loved coming up with new plot points and Halloween costumes for everyone with you. :-D Truly a summer worth remembering.

2.) FINALLY uploading the prologue and intro chapter of WWBL Not really a writing memory, but that moment was … so sexy and magical. Seriously, you have no idea how long I had been waiting to finally start that story, waiting for the Steckbriefe to roll in and see people react to the prologue and generally the idea … I even made one of those countdown graphic thingies for the designated upload date! 8D At that point I had planned that story for about six months and just … yeah, that felt powerful to me.

1.) Writing the prologue for WWBL When I first started the draft for that prologue I was sitting at the window in my favourite hotel in Winterberg, Sauerland, wore my dark green flannel, had the window wide open breathing in the cool mountain air and allowed myself to listen to my WWBL playlist for the very first time. God, that felt so amazing. I even have a photo of it (which somehow makes it look like I have the biggest football shoulders in the universe) my sister took that night. God I miss Sauerland. )’:

5.) Vater Unser by E Nomine Starting off with some weird shit, won’t we? I’ve been in love with this song since fifth or sixth grade, when I was just starting to develop an actual music taste and although I have many favourite songs by E Nomine, this one has to be my absolute fave. Every time I can relate it to a character it makes me love said character even more. (Also I think about it every time my mom forces me to go to church for Christmas so … yay? I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t even be able to remember the Vater Unser if it wasn’t for this song. 8D)

4.) Wires by The Neighbourhood I think this is the newest all-time fave on this list, I found it in … 2015? Thank you, Youtube AMVs. Yeah man, this one is just … on so many playlists it’s not even funny anymore.

3.) Heathens by Twenty One Pilots An edgelord classic but like … it’s on EVERY playlist of mine. Every single one. It’s just so good. The first time I heard it was on the radio tho, when I was having breakfast with Jessie and I forced her to shazam it because it immediately stuck with me,,,

2.) Imaginary by Evanescence My first Evanescence song ever and the first step towards becoming who I am today I think. This song has like … such a big history for me, man. It single-handedly turned me goth in 2008 and I have never really thanked it for that.

1.) Eternal by Evanescence Might be my favourite song of all time. The number of dramatic RP scenes I have written with this in the background … man. Oh, also this song is the reason for one of my oldest internet nicknames, ‘eternala’, which subsequently shortened into Etschuh and then Tschuh, my main nickname until 2017, when I came out as trans and finally found an actual name for myself I was comfortable with!

NON BLANK RUNE CHARACTERS

I know this was probably supposed to be about fandom characters but I can literally not come up with a single character right now that I love with a special burning passion and that is not my or one of my friends’ OCs so you’re getting OCs now. u_u And boy do I have a lot of those.

5.) Jackson Tracey from atroCITY (mine) This little piece of shit kept me company for a pretty long time and is still very close to my heart for some reason, although I haven’t drawn him or really thought about him in detail for a while now. My favourite thing is how I only realized what a horrible person he was after I stopped regularly working with him but honestly good for me. 8D His storyline and personality is kinda convoluted and tbh I’m not really sure how much of it is canon anyway (atrc was always a little weird about canon rip) but yeah. He’s an obsessive stalker piece of shit who pities himself way too much and he is also a semi-immortal demigod who likes knives. I hate him but he also helped me a lot with some gender and sexuality stuff so thanks I guess.

4.) Mayoko Imai from Century Riders DXPrototype (Maus’ and mine) Mayoko is a magical girl protagonist with a cool cyborg arm prosthetic and her main character trait was that she was basically a reverse weeaboo, a Japanese girl who was obsessed with American media, culture and comic book heroes! I actually love her concept a lot and she also had a pretty cool character arc in her story (which Maus and I wrote together and actually finished btw!), although it could use a lot more … polishing from today’s point of view. But I love her anyway. She always wanted to do the right thing and be a hero and got broken pretty cruelly and her ending is kinda bittersweet I guess? Ahh there’s just so much nuance to it … anyways, CR3 also stuck with me for a very long time and I enjoyed the time with her a lot. :3 (Her name had a cameo in Another Incident btw heehee)

3.) Tessa *insert extremely long chain of unnecessary first names here* von Lean from Nobody Is Perfect and Infernal Temptation (belongs to one of my old school friends) Tessa is just … a hand full. I love to hate her. She is badly written and developed and just OOZES mentally ill teenage girl’s idealized self-insert power fantasy, but she just … man, she was a big part of one of my most drama-filled high school friendships which I love looking back at so much. Tessa has fucked so many of my characters … good for her tbh! There are actually two versions of her, one is just a ‘normal’ teenage girl and one can shapeshift into a cheetah, but both of them are very close to my heart. I should really adopt and redesign her some day.

2.) Judy Khayat from Original vs. Final (mine) Look, I love all my OvF-characters and every single one of them is special to me in their own way, but Judy is just … the most complex of them all I think? Man, she went through so much … she is actually one of my oldest (semi)-active characters (I created her in 2009) and her latest version is from 2016 but I should really, REALLY revise her again tbh. She has a very complicated backstory that I didn’t handle as carefully as I should have, and anger issues and religious conflict and depression and PTSD and then Vance of all people becomes obsessed with her for no reason and decides to traumatize her even more … yeah. God I really love her but I seriously need to work on her. A LOT. I should also finally rename her tbh … let’s just see where she takes me next.

1.) Okami (I don’t even remember if she has a proper last name rn lol) from Split Realm (mine) Yeah, that bitch is just my favourite OC. She’s also very old, probably from around 2009, and initially was a magical girl with fire powers who I played in an RP with my friend Flauch but boy did she grow up! Holy fuck. Okami is a horrible person but I love her so much. She is so violent and full of anger and pain and sadness and treats everyone around her like shit and she is in love and she is a demon but also apparently the personification of the concept of Chaos but she just wants to be a teenager again and run away with the love of her life and ahhh it’s all so hopeless for her … also she turned out gnc af with time passing and pretty much went through a gender/sexuality crisis in real time with me, her creator, which is always fun. :^D I haven’t drawn her in a while tbh. Should really do that.

RUNES IN BLANK RUNE

I’m just gonna go with the arcs here, okay? Also this entire answer might look completely different if you asked me again tomorrow, you know how indecisive I am with Blank Rune shit ahha,,,

5.) Jera Look. I know I’m boring and stupid. But I just love Tave and Liam having their disgusting little foreshadowing talk, okay? I can read it over and over. I just love my horrible little shit crime boys. Also Rhy and Phillip are there. (’:

4.) Isa This one is here because it was the first arc I witnessed in real time which gives it a very special place in my heart and it also … hit pretty hard at the time. But having read Fehu it’s become even better now! It’s just such a wonderful, tragic romance between two horrible, ruthless boys and I … I’m not immune to Rhy, sadly. :-/ Just like Phillip.

3.) Wunjo We still haven’t seen everything that leads up to Wunjo yet, but we DO know more than we did initially (wow shocker) and it’s just always a fucking blast. Also, it has the first mention of Ash’s real name … the first Rhy POV (which what the fuck!! I always feel like we had one before but we didn’t!! Wild) and it has crazy blood-soaked murder Tave, my beloved. :///3

2.) Eiwaz You guys have heard me fanboy about Eiwaz so many times already. Eiwaz-OT3 (and Kain) my beloved!!! It’s just SUCH an amazing starting point and there are so, so many things that tie back to it and every time we find out about a new one my heart makes a little jump … und es beginnt von Neuem indeed.

1.) Gebo One of the most painful but also the most beautiful arcs yet in my opinion. It’s been hyped up for so long and boy did it deliver. God, my heart still hurts when I think about that last scene. Also all the dialogue … the golden lines we got … and it’s an arc without Rhy! Crazy!! :-D I just love the relationship between Ash, Astrid and Jakob so much. God fuck I want what they have. Just maybe without the murder suicide,,,

5.) Diese Sonntagsbrötchen wo die Verpackung so plopp macht, wenn man die Folie abzieht Better than normale Brötchen for some reason. Most of the time. See 2.) Look man, I just really love a good breakfast …

4.) Chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese topping One of the first things from a certain baking book I tried when I was getting into baking back in 2019. God they are so tasty. I don’t make them often so I don’t get used to them too much and eating them still feels special but ahhhh I love them so much!

3.) Grünkohl mit Kartoffelbrei und Mettendchen One of my favourite things about autumn/winter and one of my biggest comfort foods. God I love this shit so much. I just put … mountains of Grünkohl and Kartoffelbrei on my plate every time and I will just warm it up for four days straight until there’s no more left. It turns me into a fucking caveman. I’m not even big on eating meat but … yeah. Everything is different when there’s Grünkohl.

2.) Normales Brötchen mit Butter und Scheibenkäse aber ich bin beim Frühstücksbuffet im Hotel Oddly specific but that’s just how it is. Sorry. Nichts geht über Brötchen mit Käse.

1.) Chilli-Knoblauch-Nudelauflauf My beloved. My comfort food. I eat it literally every second day. At least one hour in the kitchen every time. Fresh ingredients. My only vegetable intake. And I’ve been doing that for three years. I just love it so much, man. I cook it for everyone who visits me. Chilli-Knoblauch-Auflauf cured my depression.

Author’s note: Hey, do you remember the time when MC comes back to Cordonia engaged to Liam and suddenly everything seems just perfect? After all the gossip and shade everyone was throwing at her, the whole country just bows at her and accepts her as their future? Well, none of that is going to happen here. Watch out for Jade’s bad language 😅 [All characters are owned by Pixelberry studios]

Book: The Royal Romance Pairing: Liam x MC (Jade) Rating: M Word count: 1681 Summary: The news of Jade and Liam’s engagement aren't being well accepted by Cordonian citizens and Jade doesn’t react so queenly to the critics. Now it’s up to Liam and Hana to fix the problem.

"ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? THOSE MOTHERFUCKING HYPOCRITS!"

Jade's shouts could be heard by anyone at the West Wing of the Palace. Justin walked out of her room and the servants in the hallway looked at each other uneasily. "Call the Beaumonts and Mr. Walker and get the security team. We need to do damage control right now," he said to the maid assigned to Jade and rushed to the Royal Public Relations office.

Liam sipped his passionfruit juice during his break between meetings when his office phone rang. He glared at the device and ignored by putting earphones on and opening the music app on his laptop. Soon, his smartphone buzzed. Inhaling sharply, he answered. "Yes, Andrea?"

"The Public Relations team requests an urgent meeting with you, Sir," his assistant replied.

"I have fifteen minutes left off my break. Tell them I won't spend it dealing with the press."

"It's about your engagement, Sir! Jade is freaking out!" Justin yelled in the background.

His eyes went wide. "Send them in."

A few seconds later, Bastien opened the door, letting Justin and the Royal Communications Director in. "Good morning, Your Majesty. We have a public relations crisis to handle regarding your wedding to Lady Jane." The Royal PR handed Liam the newest edition of Gosh! Magazine.

The magazine had several pictures from them at Coney Island eating cotton candy and laughing, having breakfast with Jade's friends at the café in Williamsburg while Madeleine was seeing in photos with her entourage or alone.

"Coping? Are you kidding me?" His face hardened, throwing the magazine on the table furiously.

"Sounds like you and Lady Jade are on the same page about that. But it gets worse." Justin opened a video in his tablet and showed it to Liam.

"Good morning, my darlings! Welcome to The Bridget Banks show! Shall we get down to business?" The audience cheered and applauded. "As you may know, our hunky prince- ahem, sorry..." Bridget battled her lashes throwing her hair back and the audience laughed. "His Royal Majesty King Liam broke off his engagement with our delightful Countess Madeleine." The audience let out a unison aww. "Oh, stop it! I know you're faking that, you minxes," the audience laughed again.

"But don't get too excited, ladies. Our King Charming already found a substitute for the job," the show host nodded. "Do any of you guys remember Jade? Yes, the 'mysterious' outsider lady is now betrothed to the King. We all knew she was his favorite during the social season. I don't know why, maybe she's wild, or knows how to make guacamoles and his favorite kale juice or something...” she rolled her eyes.

The audience laughed

“But really? Does she even know our beloved traditions or our history? Or the price rate of a bottle of a Cordonian Ruby Cider nowadays? Does the Royal Family expect us to believe a girl who came out of the suburbs in New York can be Queen?"

The crowd applauded.

"Don't get me wrong, I think she's pretty. The girl knows how to pose for the cameras, she's a trendsetter and all, but she's a waitress. A waitress! Madeleine is Cordonian and English nobility. How is a waitress gonna top that, huh? You'd better reconsider this engagement before you settle for that foreigner commoner, Your Majesty."

Justin shut down the tablet and looked at Liam. A vein popped on his left temple and his jaw clenched as his hands balled into fists. "We have to work with contingencies plans, Your Majesty."

"Where's Jade?"

"Umm..." Justin pointed out the window. At Jade's balcony, a guard gripped her by the waist as Maxwell tried to pull a laptop from her hands.

"LET GO OF ME!" Jade screamed.

"Let go of the laptop and he will release you." Maxwell's voice sounded louder than he meant it.

"It's my laptop! I do whatever the hell I want with it!" She tried to get away, but the guard’s arm pressed even tighter.

"Calm down first."

"Oh, I will! Once I shove that trashy magazine over that classicist's bony ass, I will be fucking calm! LET GO OF ME! NOW!" She threw her legs in the air, still trying to escape the guard’s hold.

"Why is Lord Maxwell the only one there?"

"Duke Bertrand was there first, but he chastened her for her behavior in New York and she started throwing vases at him. Mr. Walker didn't answer his phone," Justin grimaced.

Liam pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes before turning to him. "You can't knock out a lioness with a tranquilizer made for domestic cats. Work on the contingencies plan. I'll handle her." He walked out of his office. "Andrea, cancel my next meeting. I’ll be back after lunch," he commanded as he passed by his assistant's desk and headed towards Jade's room.

As soon he arrived at her door, Liam found Drake standing in the hallway cringing at the breaking noises coming from Jade’s room.

"Hey, how long have you been here?" he patted Drake's shoulder.

Drake shoved his hands on his pockets. "Not long. My phone was on mute when they called me. Sorry."

"It's okay. I called to let you know what's happening just in case Plan A doesn't work out, but I'm quite sure it won't be necessary."

"You sound pretty confident for someone whose girlfriend looks like she just woke up from the dead and turned into a feral. What's Plan A?"

Liam nodded towards the opposite of the hall smiling. Hana gracefully walked into their direction beaming.

"Hey, guys," she hugged them both. "Sorry, it took me so long to come. I was making the appointments for Jade at the boutique and I got distracted."

"It's alright. You're here now and that’s what matters," Liam replied.

Maxwell came out of the room. "Oh, thank heavens you're here! Maybe she'll calm down now." They heard things being smashed against the wall. "Please do something, Liam."

Liam exchanged looks with Hana. She nodded and approached the door, knocking softly on it.

"Why aren't you going in?" Drake murmured.

"Jade?" Hana spoke louder, but still gently.

"WHAT?" Jade snarled from her room.

"Because I'm the reason why she received the backlash. I’ve been in this situation before and I know she will probably get angrier if I get in. She needs a friend who truly understands what she’s going through."

"It's Hana. Can I come in?" The door opened and all three men stepped away. Hana got in, closing the door behind her. They didn't hear anything else. Seconds later, the guards left the room.

"What's going on?" Drake asked the guards.

"Lady Lee held Lady Bourbon's hand, took away the glass on her hand and they hugged. Lady Bourbon began to cry and Lady Lee signaled for us to leave the room."

"That's it? Hana gets in and Hulk turns back to Bruce Banner?" Maxwell questioned a little baffled. Liam shrugged smiling. "How does she do it?"

"I don't know, but there's something in Hana’s eyes... It's really soothing," Drake replied.

"Does Hana have mind control skills or something?" Maxwell inquired, still in shocked.

"I told you Plan A would work," Liam smiled.

Hana sat on the bed with Jade's head resting on her lap. They haven't said a word to each other yet. All she could do was wait for Jade to feel ready to speak.

“Why do they hate me?" Jade wiped her tears with the back of her hands and threw the empty tissue box on the floor.

"They don't hate you. They simply misjudge you because you're an outsider who got involved in a terrible gossip. Cordonian people can be prude and chauvinist sometimes." Hana ran her fingers into Jade's hair and picked up a new tissue box.

"I don't want anyone thinking that Liam made a bad choice by choosing me. How am I going to convince them I can be a good queen?" She sniffed taking a tissue from the new box.

"Don’t overanalyze it. You have all the traits to be a terrific leader. Liam couldn't have made a better choice. But we can work on a few more things to make you the perfect image for a great queen."

Jade sat up on the bed and looked at Hana. "You sound like you have a plan to fix it."

"Yes. The plan isn't mine, but I helped."

“Hmm..." Jade cocked an eyebrow. “I’m listening."

"First, we need to get the servants to clean your room and then we go to the library. Where's your laptop?"

"Taking a swim at the garden fountain..." Jade bit one of her nails.

"Do I dare ask about your phone and tablet?"

Jade pointed to the floor, where both devices lied with the screens cracked and some pieces scattered in the middle of a mess of broken vases, glasses, shoes, torn pillowcases and goose feathers.

"We'll work with mine for now and then we go out to buy new ones."

"Why do we need them?"

"Because we're going to make your schedule of daily activities as a duchess and plan your wedding. After all this, no one will dare to say you’re not suitable to be queen."

"Please don't tell me I'll have to review table etiquette again," Jade scrunched her nose.

Hana giggled. "No, your table manners are good. You're going to be prepared to rule. You have to develop some new skills."

"Okay, I'm officially intrigued and I'm game."

"Good. Now go freshen up while I call your maid."

Jade walked to the bathroom, washed her face and applied some makeup. Hana fetched her phone and sent a text.

Shameless Season 11 Episode 2 Review: Go Home, Gentrifier!

“I want some nice things in my life for a change.”

A major hurdle that season ten of Shameless had to work through was not only the loss of Emmy Rossum’s Fiona, but also the idea that some other Gallagher should now take her place as the show’s central protagonist and stabilizing force in the family. Their decision to appoint Debbie to this position did not work in the show’s favor, but season eleven is already off to a strong start by how it’s relegated Debbie back to more of a supporting status. If anything, Shameless’ final season understands that it doesn’t need someone to fill Fiona’s place and that truly showcasing the cast as an ensemble is the strongest way to go out. Lip’s struggles get a little more attention than everything else, but the episode’s reasonably balanced and all the stories are driven by the same economic conflicts and desire for acceptance, whether it’s in a new neighborhood, job, or from a family member.

Right from moment one “Go Home, Gentrifier!” feels more natural than last week’s premiere and the whole episode eases into a very comfortable rhythm. It’s extremely satisfying to see the Gallagher family operate as a unit for large portions of this episode. There’s such infectious chemistry between these characters when they all get to bounce off of each other and Frannie’s fifth birthday operates as a reason for everyone to get together for the bookends of this hour. There’s such an enjoyable energy to these scenes between Gallaghers, but this also extends into how this is genuinely a very funny installment. Longtime Shameless writer Nancy M. Pimental’s script features exceptional dialogue, which helps “Go Home, Gentrifier!” work a lot better than it necessarily should.

There’s a strong sense of comedic timing and joke development through many of the scenes, which helps give mundane scenarios a lot more impact. There’s a great running gag in The Alibi Room about Tony and Kermit’s distance that beautifully develops. On that note, Shameless also deserves credit for turning the strange hookup between Tony and Kermit from the premiere into a legitimate storyline. It felt odd and not necessarily earned when it first happened, but I’m now excited to see where it goes. If this season ends with the two of them in a relationship together I’ll be genuinely happy.

Mickey is often presented as one of the series’ broader characters, but “Go Home, Gentrifier!” makes beautiful use of him and he’s another strong example of this episode’s comedic strength. The fact that a derivative infomercial bullies Mickey into finally getting a job (while he also ignores the point of that infomercial) is actually perfect. His roleplay scenario at his interview is just as good and a testament to how much potential there is to have Mickey out of his element and in a nine-to-five context. Granted, that plan becomes very short-lived, but it opens the door for even more rewarding material between Mickey and Ian over their contrasting strategies to make an income.

Ian and Mickey’s problem becomes representative for many of Shameless’ characters as they all adopt wildly diverse approaches towards economic oppression. It’s worth pointing out that both of the characters with the most conventional jobs are the most frustrated. Carl begins his illustrious career as a South Side police officer and his partner is played by Joshua Malina here who’s in fine form as a deleted character from Grandma’s Boy. Carl’s attitude is incredibly gung ho to get into some real police work, even if he manipulated the system to get this far. Ironically, his partner is the laziest kind of cop that skirts by on the bare minimum and has perfected the art of staying in the background.

It’s an interesting idea to neuter Carl and use the police force to reflect another broken area of Chicago. The premiere hinted that this corruption would be through the police force’s abuses of power, but it’s a more unique turn to have Carl aggravated over the opposite problem. Despite his frustrations, the way in which Carl supports his partner and still finds ways to embody the unity of the police force is really sweet. This camaraderie may inadvertently ruin his partner’s life and solve Carl’s problem in the process, but he only has altruistic intentions here.

Shameless’ biggest weak spots over its past seasons have been its treatment of Frank, Kevin, and V. In Frank’s case, he’s continually paired up with a revolving door of guest stars like Luis Guzman or Katey Segal, only to know that his latest get rich quick scheme will have to come to an end by the season’s close, if not sooner. Kevin and V also continually work through extremely odd jobs that feel like rejected Kramer subplots, most of which are incredibly disconnected from the rest of the series. It shouldn’t have taken Shameless this long to have Frank, Kevin, and V all share a storyline, which easily solves both of those problems.

A story arc where Frank is Kevin and V’s weed connoisseur so that they can get the best possible product also makes a lot of sense for everyone involved. The detail that Frank’s actually a skilled gourmand in the field is the icing on the pot brownie. “Go Home, Gentrifier!” succeeds when it brings these characters together and it already seeds more compelling developments to come as Frank’s worth begins to cause friction in their new business. It’s also a rare situation where Frank is completely on point and fully capable. He doesn’t screw up once in this episode and he even is able to unintentionally read between the lines with Tony and Kermit. If this was someone’s first Shameless episode they’d think Frank is some Heisenberg-esque genius and that’s a fantastic angle for him during this final season. Maybe some Nazis will end up executing Kevin in front of him during one of the series’ final episodes.

Liam also attempts to make some easy money off of food, but his product is completely legal and functions more as a commentary on the depressing state of public schools. Liam has become a real joy over the course of Shameless’ latest seasons and the show lucked out with how Christian Isaiah has turned into such a charismatic performer. This energy often sees Liam turn into an inspirational leader and that’s no different here when he transforms subpar cafeteria food into the opportunity to become a martyr. Forget about Ian’s Gay Jesus and get ready for Liam’s Cafeteria Food Jesus.

Liam’s actions bring him together with his fellow student, but Lip and Tami don’t receive the same warm reception from their community. Lip and Tami’s problems with a neighborhood vandal turns into a deceptively deep story. A lot of characters get pushed out of their comfort zones in this episode and slotted into roles that feel foreign to them, but billing Lip as a gentrifier is by far the most extreme example.

The reasons behind this are crushing in their own way, but Lip is not a character who has fundamentally changed or sold out his values with his new life and house. This turns this episode into more of an examination on false labels and the widespread damage that they can cause. It’s really quite sweet to see Lip side with the greater good and help out his community rather than take pride in the good condition of his new home. In a strange way, the vandalism that adorns his house becomes a badge of courage for how strong Lip’s values really are.

Labels are also crucial when it comes to Debbie’s desire to be viewed as a princess, even in lieu of Frannie’s repeated dismissals of the idea. Her actions over Frannie’s birthday help unpack the episode’s themes in a very different way. “Go Home, Gentrifier!” mildly addresses Debbie’s quarter-life crisis here and that she’s reacting out of anxiety over getting older, but it feels pretty baked into this storyline. It’s Frannie’s birthday, but Debbie is also older and the fact that she has a daughter that’s now five certainly subconsciously contributes to Debbie’s desire to dress up as a princess and hide away in fantasy. The episode simplifies this to some extent, but the deeper implications are still there.

“Go Home, Gentrifier!” works out any of the kinks present in Shameless’ season premiere as it confidently moves ahead in its final season. This episode is very crowded, which is something that Shameless always struggles with, but all of these storylines feel natural and that they’re contributing to a larger whole. It’s still very early on and it’s possible that none of these plot threads will be relevant by the end of the season, but “Go Home, Gentrifier!” officially has me optimistic for what’s to come and that Shameless can end on a note that’s worthy of its eleven-year run.

Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (August 25-31, 2019)

A lot of new music is released over the course of any given week. This week was no exception, as many new songs and music videos hit the internet in the last seven days. That was especially true for rock, jazz and pop, as we got new tracks from the likes of Liam Gallagher, Lewis Capaldi, Miles Davis, Simple Creatures and more.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet for the week’s best new songs and music videos. Here are eight (and a few more) that we think are worth checking out this weekend.

1. Lewis Capaldi, “Someone You Loved”: “Someone You Loved” is a down tempo, piano-driven ballad about opening your heart and getting hurt. Capaldi sings with heart and passion, so much so that you can feel his pain in the song. The video perfectly choreographs the song’s emotion as people (presumably friends) try to prevent Capaldi from trying to talk to the girl again after she hurt him. (video)

2. The Faim, “Humans”: “Humans” is a high-energy, pop-infused rock jam that will get stuck in your head from the first notes. The song draws elements from Imagine Dragons’ and Fall Out Boy’s sounds, blending melodic verses and heavier choruses with ease. I could definitely hear this song being played on alternative radio. 3. Simple Creatures, “Thanks, I Hate It”: On the heels of their debut EP, Simple Creatures, the duo of Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus and All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth, have announced their second EP, ‘Everything Opposite,” for October 11. Along with the announcement, they released a new single, “Thanks, I Hate It.” The song is a polished piece of melodic, electronic-tinged pop-punk with excellent movement and enough catchiness to keep you coming back. I like that you can still get the buzz-y heaviness of the guitars coming through (video)

4. Liam Gallagher, “One Of Us”: “One Of Us” takes the Britpop sound that Gallagher helped create with Oasis and lightens it up, bringing in a more wistful dreaminess to the melody. The song lyrically reads nostalgic for his younger years and almost seems like a letter to brother Noel about how things ended. This rings true even hiding the day the band broke up (28/08/09, 10 years to the day the single comes out incidentally) on a door as a little Easter egg. (video)

5. Miles Davis, “Give It Up”: Jazz legend Miles Davis’ lost album ‘Rubberband’ is set to hit shelves in September and now we’re getting a taste of what we can hear from it. “Give It Up” is a funky instrumental track that’s fast-paced enough to be engaging for those who may not even be fans of jazz. 6. Subhumans, “99%”: UK punks Subhumans are releasing their first album in 12 years, ‘Crisis Point,’ in September and have released its latest single, “99%.” This no-frills punk track is short and to the point, embracing their brash political side with abandon. (video)

7. The High Dials, “Employment and Enjoyment”: “Employment and Enjoyment” has a 90s alt-rock feel that mixes Beck’s eclectic style and Britpop style melody. There’s a kind of psychedelic fuzz over the whole song that contributes to that overall feel. (video)

8. Graduating Life, “Wonderful”: It’s uncanny how much “Wonderful” sounds like a Say Anything track, right down to the vocal intonation. The trumpet in the background is a nice touch, accenting the vocals and guitars, adding to the song’s big, triumphant feel. (video)

thoughts on the latest briefing

I guess the new briefing video on weapons and biotics training seems a lil redundant given the two recent videos in the deep-dive gameplay/combat series, but they had to keep releasing them anyway because of the 6-video structure of the unlock path for the exclusive Pathfinder helmet.

I’m looking at it like.. well, it’s the in-universe version of the same sort of information. These vids are part of a mock-up of the in-universe Andromeda Iniaitive’s “training hub” - meant to be the same sort of briefings new recruits or Sara and Scott themselves would have been given as a junior part of the AI or Pathfinder Team. I’m enjoying the alternative “in-character” way of being presented with the same information. The deep-dives are great, detailed and highly informational (not to mention needed), but a little dry. I’ll take all the extra flavor they’re gonna give.

I’m also looking at it like.. they’re spotlights on various characters, not only providing great samples of their voices but giving a little attention and insight into them. We’ve had Jien, Avina, Kallo, Cora and now Liam. Like.. Jien comes across highly ambitious, quite serious and businesslike, as you might expect from the person whose towering vision the AI is the physical reality of. Kallo is good-humored and an adorable geek, if him nerding out over tech and vehicles is anything to go by. and so on. Until this vid, at this point in marketing Liam was a bit passed-over and hadn’t had much spotlight or attention - so something with Liam front and center was sorely needed (imo). We’re still due one more video - probably on outpost establishment guidelines and first contact protocols together, since that’s the only things Jien laid out in the first briefing that haven’t yet been covered. Maybe it will be narrated by Alec? We’ve had things narrated by and featuring lines from him already - it’d be cool if the final video had someone else! Maybe the Tempest’s science officer, since xenobiology would come under that remit! Or Foster Addison, the Director of Colonial Affairs of the AI, since she oversees all colonization efforts. As-yet we’ve only got the smallest scraps of info on the science officer and Foster, particularly when it comes to official promo materials, and particularly where Foster is concerned.

In this vid, Liam’s character traits are highlighted - versatility, adaptability and skill - of course, cause only the best are selected as part of the Pathfinder Team (unless the Pathfinder is your dad lmao..). His skill and knowledge base as covered in the vid, okay, yeah, I can see why Alec hand-picked this guy. It builds on the previous details given about how he has a background in engineering but left to train law enforcement. [Edit: Something @venavis mentioned to me - it’s also apparent that the AI picked Liam for what is called “good character”. He’s got a moral center, he’s not the cut-and-dry standard-issue military type, I mean yeah, if they want a fight, he’ll give it to ‘em. but he definitely doesn’t seem like the kind of cop that’s corrupt or arrogant from his own power - despite his skill in combat he’s not shoot-on-sight, he’s a problem solver. He’s a situation-handler and crisis sorter-outer, not a shoot-first-ask-questions later guy. We are gonna need that intelligence and that moral center, not your stereotypical space marine dudebro, because we’re trying to make positive first contact and are going to Andromeda with a cadre of diplomats aboard the Nexus].

I especially liked how he told us his personal favorites out of the weapons and his preferred combat style (a bit of everything), that was a nice personal touch, makes him seem like a real guy giving a real lesson. But more than that, his personality shines through. It’s apparent how friendly and good-natured he is, he’s got a sense of fun ("jump-jets"!), he’s hands-on, he trusts people, he’s trust-worthy, his enthusiasm is there.. I love this guy! I wanna have a beer and shoot some pool with this guy. This guy’s got my back, and his attitude is infectious. We can also hear his idealism as he touches on what the AI means to him and his hopes for humanity’s future in the new galaxy. This stuff is close to his heart and he’s optimistic about it all. And maybe, a tad naive. I’m a bit worried for poor Liam when he’s confronted with the fact that the AI has defectors, splinter-groups, disagreements.. This is not what he signed up for. This isn’t what he’s here for or what he believes in. He’ll be angry. He’ll feel frustrated. I’m excited for these character moments. I am pumped

Not only characters, but these videos are giving snippets of lore and background details. Avina’s briefing about the Arks and Nexus was probably the best in this regard. But even in this one.. I’m nodding along like, yes, yes, give me all the in-universe lore explanations for gameplay features (AI weapons need to be adaptable/modifiable due to limited storage space on Arks, explaining the features of extensive customization and the crafting system), give me all the flavor details that potentially hint at plot points or character development moments (limited resources and subsequent challenges and conflicts that arise from that; also see above about Liam & splinter-groups etc), give me all the lore snippets on the guns in the Milky Way galaxy.. first thing I did when the video was over was open up the Mass Effect Wiki and look for the familiar-sounding Ariake Tech and go :D It’s those little ties and call-backs to the trilogy that are helping make this still seem like Mass Effect even in a whole new galaxy, 600 years from Shepard, 2.5 million light years away.
