arch8 Re-Vision Competition
RE-VISION
We laughed, we cried, we raged against the dying of the light, which was the ending of our favorite shows. Sitcoms have been there since the dawn of tv… From a CRT television to a flat-screen to our laptops to all-powerful OTT platforms, sitcoms have come a long way. But there is always that one show, that one sitcom you can watch over and over. Whether it’s before you go to bed, during your meals, or after finishing the most boring assignment ever.
The one with a character you admire, the one whose dialogues are like your second language, you got the idea… Right! We’ve seen it so often that we are aware of all the details. So what if we tell you that now you can change it and show people your perspective. Show them how it could have been if these sitcoms were shot in this day and age with you as their interior designer. So now, you’ll have the same people as before but with the needs of today’s world.
Whenever we propose a design for our clients, we try to incorporate every requirement of them. But our ideas are based more on our experiences and less on the profiles of the users. Because well, for God’s sake we just met them!! So if we are provided the possibility of knowing our client inside out, can we now propose the best-suited design for them? (Of course, we can!)
Having said that, ARCH8 is here with yet another competition for you all, this time an interior designing competition. We shortlisted 3 most famous sitcoms of all time: Friends, Big Bang Theory, and How I Met Your Mother.
Re-design any one of the following apartments:
1. Monica and Rachel’s apartment 2. Joey and Chandler’s apartment 3. Sheldon and Leonard’s apartment 4. Ted and Marshall’s apartment
You can download the .cad files of floor plans at arch8.in
Character Sketch
A little something to help you out.
1. MONICA: Monica is a chef in her early 30s. She is obsessive about things being clean and in order. (‘ Things shouldn’t be just ‘health department’ clean, they should be ‘Monica clean.’) She likes to host gatherings and invite people over for dinners and parties. She is the ‘mother ‘ of the group and can be sometimes dominative.
2. RACHEL: She has switched jobs from being a waitress to an executive at Ralph Lauren. All her friends come to her for fashion advice. She likes to shop. Rachel is very careless (as she says,” I shouldn’t be allowed to make decisions anymore.”) She is funny, spirited but pretty self-involved. She does not easily get along with other women (“That’s OK, Girls tend to not like me”).
3. CHANDLER: Chandler is a funny guy (Jokes are his ‘thing’). Chandler works in statistical analysis and data reconfiguration but nobody knows where he works (he’s a ‘transponster’). Chandler’s generally embarrassed by his parents, his job, and his relationship status. His sense of humor helps him cope with all of these problems. He is notoriously sarcastic. He is the highest-earning member of his friends’ circle.
4. JOEY: Joey is an actor whose work can be seen in the show “Days of Our Lives”. He is a child at heart and a foodie (Joey doesn’t share food). He likes all the kitsch art. He never gets in a serious relationship. He is dim-witted but good-natured. He likes to play foosball and is a big fan of ‘Baywatch’.
5. SHELDON: Sheldon is a theoretical physicist. He lives his life with rules and regulations and is obsessed with logical reasoning. He is interested in comic books and science fiction. Sheldon comes off as a stereotypical nerd and really has no qualms about it (but he is not crazy, his mother got him tested). He is socially awkward and likes to spend most of his time at home and at work.
6. LEONARD: He is an experimental physicist. He is a huge fan of Star Wars, science fiction, and comic books. Leonard is extremely nerdy and mainly associates with people who fit this description (“12 years after high school and I’m still at the nerd table.”). He also plays the cello. He is lactose intolerant. He lives in the apartment by Sheldon’s rules and regulations.
7. TED: Call him an architect, a hopeless romantic, or a know it all, you can say that he’s the embodiment of it all. Since college, Ted has been in many toxic relationships where he was considered an outcast or “not traditionally cool” i.e dorky. Interests… telling stories, falling in love, believing in destiny, avoiding confrontation, Renaissance Faires, crossword puzzles, Star Wars, breakfast foods, show tunes, girls who play bass guitar, giving “the best” gifts, and reading serious literature. (Random girl: What made you want to be an architect? Ted: Well you know, the soul of an artist, hands of a master craftsman… it was inevitable)
8. MARSHALL: Though he is arguably the kindest member of the group, he never shies away from a spirited debate, usually shouting “Lawyered!” if (well, “when”) he wins. A lawyer who’s madly in love with his partner in crime, Lily (his fiance). Creator of a funk band called “The Funk, The Whole Funk, And Nothing But The Funk”, he is a 6’4, supernatural (i.e Bigfoot, loch ness monster, and ghost) nerd and a foodie with a passion for star wars and playing (and winning) board games.

Meet Steve
In our final staff profile, we interview Steve, without whom there would be no Lookahead.  He does business in the best way; he finds top talent for young start ups and huge companies and his clients and candidates become long time partners and friends.  He doesn't take on too much work as he wants to give the very best service to all.
Tumblr media
What do you do at Lookahead and how long have you been working with us? I’m the founder so my start date was Mar 2012 :) I’m a technical recruiter but nowadays it’s my job to get things out of the way for others. Helping out with advice and running business improvement projects. I have recruited for all of our long term clients at some point, so can offer context and chip in on searches.
What’s your background?  Where were you in the tech industry before joining Lookahead? I was a nerdy kid and grew up loving computers. In the late 90s I played way too much Quake II and started a clan (basically, a team). Looking back I realise that was an important moment - it accidentally gave me a taste of leadership and a reason to learn how to make a website. The site got hacked by a now famous Aussie entrepreneur who then came to our LAN party and taught us how he did it. Good times.
After finishing high school my uncle got me to set up a network for his business. Before I knew it, other referrals came in and I found that fixing computers and making websites paid my way through uni. About 2 years into my degree I landed a big project so one of my best friends Myles and I deferred our degrees to start a company.
Some of our clients were recruiting firms. After observing what they did I figured recruiting for a year or two would be a good experience. Here I am nearly 14 years later.
What do you like about Lookahead? Amazing people in a work environment that’s perfect for me. That was the idea at the start - make Lookahead somewhere I love going to every day. We’ve never grown for the sake of growth which has helped keep it that way. Our hires tend to be opportunistic - we are always looking and ready when someone incredible comes up.
There’s a light + plant filled office space that feels nice to be in. Through Covid, Kat and I have been venturing into the city just to water those plants :D
We are nerdy foodies. We eat well and buy nice computers. We pick our clients and they’re all rad in their own way. That becomes clear each year at our birthday party - you’re in a room full of friends. I pinch myself because I get to call this ‘work’.
Tumblr media
What are you passionate about?
People. They’re all so interesting and you can learn something from everybody. I feel rich because I have amazing people around me all the time - both at work and at home.
I’m also passionate about being in the water and food. 40 years from now I’ll still be trying to get better at surfing and cooking.
What was the last book you read or podcast you listened to? “Primed to Perform” – it’s about motivation at work and actually uses science to back up their theories. Long story short- focus on play rather than money. They have a survey you can take to measure your total motivation score: https://app.vegafactor.com/take_the_survey
Podcast: I’m subscribed to 34 😳.  My faves are: 99% Invisible, Derek Sivers, How I Built This, Making Sense with Sam Harris and Joe Rogan.
If you weren’t at Lookahead where would you be working or what is your dream job? This is my dream job - recruiting is a craft and you could work on it forever and still be getting better.
It would be cool to one day build a product - I’ve seen many startup journeys as an early stage investor as well as a recruiter. Would love to test myself in that arena.
If I had to work in another company it’d be Basecamp. We used their product back in ~2005 to manage client projects, and it’s how I heard about Rails. Ended up subscribing to their blog and have taken a lot of lessons in business from them, which has helped make Lookahead what it is.
First Car? A ‘93 Corolla Hatch. That was what I could afford and it’s probably for the best. Over the years I’ve worked my way up and have a car I take to the track.
Hidden Talent?
Finding things underwater.
I’m a divemaster and a trained free diver. Can dive 32 meters on a single breath! At our team hang some idiot dropped their sunnies off the pier (me). Managed to find them hours later and it was a glorious moment.
Proudest Accomplishment? Lookahead. Maybe one day I’ll have kids and it’ll be them, but for now it’s this wonderful little place we get to call work. From day 1 it’s gone surprisingly well and continues to surprise me.
The Most unusual item in your office or home? A balance board.
It used to be in the office and it’s the first thing I took home when we went Covid-remote. When you are feeling burned out from back to back meetings, jump on that and move around. It’s a great reset.
Favourite Sports Team? Not really a sports fan but I was huge on basketball cards back in the day. The Chicago Bulls in the 90s were incredible, and I’m not just saying that because of the Netflix series.
What makes you weird? I say I’m a minimalist but also own five surfboards. Wait, seven.
Tumblr media
What piece of technology seems like magic to you? AirPods. How is it that I have a computer dangling out each ear? Went for a run with my partner Jess and we’re sharing the one audio source. She had to run back to get something and even though I lost range the music buffered for ~40 seconds. When I think back to my Discman that would skip constantly I realise we are living in the future.
Guilty Pleasure? You know the bit of the sourdough starter you’re meant to discard? We make them into crackers. That with cheese or peanut butter are my kryptonite.
What’s on your Bucket List? Chuuk Lagoon in Micronesia. During WWII a fleet of Japanese ships were sunk and now lie on the bottom of the ocean. Many still mostly intact. It’s a wreck diver’s paradise and basically an underwater museum.

All of the question tags!!
Damn, it seems that this is what happens when you run out of phone data and are away from wifi for a while. The 11 questions tags take over.
Imma gonna answer every tag that I can find in this one long post, and sweet jesus I’m not tagging anyone in this particular chain, for fear of starting some kind of infinite loop that eventually becomes sentient and takes over the world.
So, time to seriously overshare!!
From @books-are-portals
1. Favourite mythological being (of any kind)?
It’s a tie between dragons and unicorns, and you know what that means…..FIGHT!
2. Least favourite drink?
I hate coke/diet coke/pepsi/cola. I’m quite intolerant to caffeine in large doses, so the last time I drank a glass of coke, at like 4pm in the afternoon probably about 8 years ago, it kept me away until 3am D:
3. What book(s) do you recommend for everyone?
The Wicked and the Divine comics. It’s hella diverse, the art is amazing, and it’s about insanely powerful magical pop star gods. EVERYONE SHOULD READ.
4. Can you touch the tip of your nose with your tongue?
No – I have both an incredibly small nose and a very stubby tongue.
5. Least favourite book protagonist?
Ummm, bar all the protagonists from classics that I could endlessly moan on about all day and all night (I’m looking at you, Pamela), I’m going to say Zoey from The House of Night series, for all her toxic slut shaming, double standards, and just generally horribly written narrative voice (‘bullpoopy’ is a word that will forever be branded on my mind).
6. What TV show/film makes you happy?
Brooklyn Nine Nine is my go-to happy tv show, Spirited Away/Howl’s Moving Castle are the film equivalent.
7. Favourite trope?
Anything where a platonic friendship (particularly between two women) gets prioritised above a romantic relationship.
8. What piece of fictional technology would you like to have?
An alethiometer from HDM – it tells you the truth, but not enough to stop you from being in control of your own fate (the beauty of a book about free will, I guess.)
9. Finish sentence: I didn’t get enough sleep last night because…
…my back aches from lugging all my books to storage.
10. Favourite food to eat when you’re feeling down?
To be honest, it’s probably toast (with peanut butter if it’s been a really bad day).
11. Can you knit?
I can, but I can’t knit well. If you want a scarf, I can, in theory, do that. Anything that isn’t just one uniform band of the same stitch and I am not the person for the job.
********
From @heretherebebooks
1. Have you ever fallen out of love with a book? Why?
There are a lot of standard answers: ACOTAR, Twilight, etc. but my most recent is Borderline by Mishell Baker – I really like books with ‘unlikeable’ protagonists so I gave this a very high rating on first review, but I didn’t realise how damaging this representation of BPD is until I read multiple own voices reviews on the subject.
2. What’s the strangest book-related dream you’ve ever had?
I have a lot of book dreams which feature me as the protagonist in my favourite fantasy novels, but then when I try to use magic to defend myself my brain goes ‘but Emma, magic doesn’t exist’ and so I’m suddenly facing down a demon hoard with no powers whatsoever.
3. Have you read a book that you didn’t really appreciate until later on?
Ash by Malinda Lo is the main one for this, because  I didn’t appreciate that Ash is not supposed to get with the unbelievably hot fairy prince…until I reread five years later and saw that the hot fairy prince is a dick.
4. What book would you like to see a musical adaptation of? (Bonus: any ideas for song titles?)
To be honest, I just want Starkid to do a ‘A Very Potter Musical’ version of Cursed Child and watch the fanfiction of the fanfiction.
5. Have you ever thrown a book across the room? What was it?
Ms Marvel Volume 4 (my ship was sunk…for now, anyway).
6. What book cover do you absolutely hate? How would you redesign it?
The Falconer and Dark Days Club UK covers are just super tacky – I’d take the Falconer US covers, and replace the Dark Days standard ‘pretty woman in fragile looking pose’ covers with either ‘plain looking woman fighting a fuck tonne of demons’ or just ‘fuck tonne of demons’, which is what the story is about anyway.
7. Have you ever cosplayed a character? Who?
I’m read this question at a con while dressed as Newt Scamander, so…. (last year I was Violet from the Rat Queen comics).
8. What’s the last book that made you want to scream from the rooftop?
Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty (the thing I screamed was “MURDER. IN. SPAAAACEEE!” when my housemate asked me what it was about, although I was not on a rooftop at the time.)
9. What’s your favourite subgenre?
My new favourite is ‘geeky contemporary’, bonus points if it’s ‘geek convention contemporary’ (Queens of Geek, Geekerella, Unconventional)
10. If you could bring an author back to life to write one more book, who would it be?
I think Angela Carter could write one hell of a feminist YA fairy tale retelling, so I’m gonna bring her back.
11. Mug full of tea on your bed - yay or nay?
I just….I don’t live life this dangerously xD
*********
From @bookcub:
1. Who was the last character you related to and what were they from?
Luca from The Burning City by Amanda Foody – he was basically the reason I kept reading that book, which otherwise wasn’t really my cup of tea, despite being a perfectly good book. He was the love interest, and was explicitly demiromantic. Although I’m not entirely sure where I place on the ace spectrum, and also felt that his portrayal was a little bit too cut and dry – with no sexual attraction until the MC shows up and then all the sexual attraction immediately at once with not really any grey area – his indifferent attitude towards sex as a general concept until those feelings latch onto a specific person, and his hesitation surrounding how to handle a relationship when it’s not something he’s has to consider before that point, were both very relatable for me. It certainly fitted my experience a little better than Tash Hearts Tolstoy.
2. What’s your favorite genre of music?
Hmmm…there’s a wide range but I guess singer songwriter covers it? I care more about a song’s lyrics than what genre it’s in.
3. Which tags on tumblr do you follow and why?
*whispers* I still don’t really understand how following tags works…..(someone plz explain)
4. Do you have any book related jewelry?
I have a necklace of an owl delivering a Hogwarts letter, and Howl’s earrings from the Ghibli movie.
5. Thoughts on booklr being dead?
I think the parts of booklr that were active a few years ago might be dead, but that’s just one specific group of people and they’ve probably moved on for a reason. Given it’s only in the last year or so that I’m getting notes and making friends, if booklr truly is dead then it seems that I’m either a necromancer, or having one hell of a party in the graveyard.
6. What are some of your favorite picture books from when you were a kid?
We’re Going On a Bear Hunt is the classic (my parents used to sing it to me to get me to go on hikes). When I could read for myself, Varjak Paw.
7. What’s the first book you remember reading or being read to you?
My dad read me the first and half of the second Harry Potter books on the Eurostar train from London to Disneyland Paris.
8. What’s your favorite dystopian novel and why?
Hmmm, I’m not really a fan of dystopias all that much (more of a fantasy person), but I really like the Wolf by Wolf series, which I think counts due to it being alt. history, and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. The first because a) it has fantasy elements, and b) A* character development over the duology. The second because it was the first ‘literary’ book I read for school and enjoyed, and because the TV show has been one of my favourite things this year.
9. Where do you get/buy most of your books?
Truthfully, Amazon. I’m trying to do better now that I’m no longer strapped for cash.
10. Favorite animal?
Cats. Fluffy, smooshy faced cats in particular ^^.
11. What book release are you anxious for (one you know the release date for) (yeah that means not Doors or Stone)
It’s a toss-up between The Stone Sky by NK. Jemisin (which is out like, next week!!), Provenance by Ann Leckie, and Warcross by Marie Lu.
**********
From @accidentalspaceexplorer:
1. What do you think of science fiction?
I think it is good when written well, where the focus on world building doesn’t leave the characters one dimensional. Unfortunately I also think it is coded masculine in a number of ways - the focus on a ‘logical, technological’ world rather than ‘illogical’ femme coded magic  -  which means that sometimes I find it quite an frustrating and alienating genre.
2. What’s one of your pet peeves?
Mansplaining. Currently there’s this really horrible man at my book club who keeps trying to explain narrative to me and I’m like, dude, I’m an English Literature graduate.
3. If you could pick one magic system to exist in real life, what would it be?
Oh, fuck. There’s so many that would be amazing, but I think the main I always gravitate back to is Elemental magic a la the Avatar universe, because that was the first type of magic system I fell in love with.
4. What is your favorite tree?
Cherry blossom
5. Do you have any plants around the house?
I do not own any personally, but my housemate has like fifteen spider plants to which I like to think I am a caring godmother figure.
6. What is the book with the weirdest premise that you’ve read and would recommend?
The Jane Austen Project - time travellers go back to Regency era Britain to befriend Austen and try to steal one of her lost manuscripts.
7. Have you loved books for as long as you can remember, or was there a particular event that sparked you becoming a reader?
As long as I can remember - I remember giving a presentation in class about how I was going to be any author at age 9.
8. What is your favorite recipe?
Lemon meringue cake - cake, lemon curd, a fuck tonne of meringue, what’s not to love?
9. Do you reread books? If not, why not? If so, what’s one that you reread again and again?
Yes. Always reread. My three main ones are The Dark Days Club, Uprooted, and (of course) Howl’s Moving Castle.
10. What’s your favorite weather?
Cold sunshine in winter.
11. Do you read every day?
Pretty much (I read on my lunch break at work).
I think that’s every outstanding question answered - sorry if I’ve missed anyone!

SPOTLIGHT: Stuart Conover, author of "Fry Machete's Monsters, Munchies, and Mayhem"
Next up in our line up of author profiles from the Dead of Winter anthology is Stuart Conover. We first got to know Stuart when we posted our open submissions call to his list on Horror Tree. (If you don't already subscribe to his list, we recommend it!)
We were delighted that he submitted a story for our anthology. "Fry Machete's Monsters, Munchies, and Mayhem" is a really great spoof on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives with a nice horror twist. It really rounded out the anthology with its blend of horror, a murder mystery, and a touch of humor.
So, read on to find out more about Stuart and what makes him tick as an author. Be sure to read the excerpt of his story too.
How did you get started with writing?
That's a tough one. I was probably writing Super Mario Brothers fan fiction in grade school. I really enjoyed writing in high school and was actively encouraged by all of my English teachers though kind of fell out of it. After college, I had a few part-time jobs writing content for various websites. That slowly got back into it and was heavily encouraged by my girlfriend at the time (now wife) to follow up on it if it was something that I enjoyed and was passionate about. I had my first short story published in 2011 and have slowly been raising that every year with 10 out in submission land at any given time and a multitude of shorts and novels at various points of being written.
Do you tend to write in just one genre or do you like to write across multiple genres?
While nearly everything I write falls under horror or at least using horror tropes, I really tend to write the gambit of genre fiction. Horror, science fiction, fantasy, etc. It's all fair game as I'm a huge nerd when it comes to these things and really like to go with whatever I'm geeking out about the most at any given time. The reason it all falls back into the horror genre though is that has always been my favorite to watch and tied with science fiction as my favorite to read. One of these days I also plan on getting a comic book together but that will probably be pretty far down the line.
What made you decide to write this story? Is there a particular backstory to it?
So, for 'Fry Machete’s Monsters, Munchies, and Mayhem' it was clearly a spoof of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on Food Network. My wife is in the restaurant business and has cooked since she was just a lil tot so is a total foodie. Thus, I have slowly evolved into a part-time foodie over the years. (When we met I was a shallow excuse of a man living off of take-out and instant noodles with being able to burn water my only notable kitchen accomplishment and can now actually make a few decent meals.) I've been thinking that many of the shows on the network would be great if set in a more horror themed genre so decided to take my stab at it. Why this one in particular? The network has ruined my love of the show by showing it for about 10 hours a night every night. I just had to run with it.
What do you like to do when you're not writing?
Well, when I'm not writing I have my wife who I mentioned above, two boys, a dog, and a full-time job in IT. If that wasn't enough to keep me busy I also run the author resource HorrorTree.com, write for ScienceFiction.com, and am the editor-in-chief of the JournalStone network of sites which includes: HellNotes.com, BuyZombie.com, HorrorReview.com, and HorrorWorld.org. I also still attempt to see some of my friends now and again and.. What's that thing where people close their eyes and shut down for a bit? That too... Somehow. Another coffee? Please?
Where is the best place for readers to find out more about your work?
I have a link to everything I've done under "My Work" on StuartConover.com or can also be followed on Twitter! Just please don't track me down and try to take any of my hairs or skin samples for cloning attempts. I've seriously had enough of that at this point!
Thanks, Stuart! And, now for an excerpt from "Fry Machete's Monsters, Munchies, and Mayhem".
Fry Machete’s Monsters, Munchies, and Mayhem
“So, when I’m in California, I like to take a load off and have a good time. If I’m at the beach, I want to get something quick and easy. What’s easier than a food truck when you’re just looking to kick back your feet and soak in the rays? Not much!
“If you’ve got a taste for something a little different than your standard dogs or may not be quite of the human persuasion . . . I want to introduce you to the ‘The Cryptoid Truck' which has been serving the hunger of all types all day and all night. It opened a couple years ago by two of the most unlikely of friends and they have cornered the market on this ghoulishly fun and original take on finger foods.
"With a mobile meat wagon and a tolerant attitude, they've been able to dominate the late night scene. At least for those brave enough among the living, dead, undead, dying, and even some merfolk to keep things fair across the board. You can find a little of everything here in this rolling sliver of SoCal and it's all coming up right now on "Monsters, Munchies, and Mayhem."
The camera cut and Fry Machete sighed as he leaned against his 1996 Lamborghini Diablo and lifted his sunglasses to rub his weary eyes. He might feasibly live forever at this rate but thirteen seasons of crossing the country showcasing food joints for the fiendish wore thin, even on him. One would have to make a deal with the devil to find this much success and keep ratings up after so many years. Or, if not the Devil, maybe a deal with the next best Evil God out there available on short notice.
Of course, any deal like that would come at a price as Fry knew all too well. He had a job to do, though, and not sucking up to the audience at the other end of the cameras. No. His real job involved slaying some of the monsters that lay in plain sight among the human populace and fed off them. The information came in packets he had mysteriously been receiving since he had started hosting the show. The ones that linked together murders which had been committed by the nightmares made real. The ones kept secret from the public and, per his latest batch of information, death was sticking to The Cryptoid like white on rice.

How old were you when you first wrote your first story?
The first story I wrote was in middle school and it was about a rogue vampire clan who killed a young girl’s parents, which then caused her to spend the rest of her life tracking them down so she could avenge her family. It was super violent, and my teacher actually sent the story, and me, to the guidance counselor. *smirks*
How many books have you written?
I’ve written five poetry collections with Raw Dog Screaming Press (Hysteria: A Collection of Madness, Mourning Jewelry, An Exorcism of Angels, Brothel, and Sheet Music to My Acoustic Nightmare) and my debut novel, The Eighth, is published with Dark Regions Press.
  Tell me about you.
I’m 29 years old, obsessed with dogs, and recently married to my best friend. When I’m not writing, I work as an Adjunct Professor at Point Park University (Composition, Literature, and Creative Writing) and then I teach/lecture in two graduate programs: Western Connecticut State University’s MFA Program for Professional and Creative Writing and Southern New Hampshire’s MFA Program for Creative Writing. Also, if I can spare a few hours here and there, I work as a writing tutor at Point Park as well.
What’s your favorite book you have written?
This is a really tough question for me. I think I’m most proud of The Eighth because it was my life’s goal to write a novel, and Sheet Music to My Acoustic Nightmare was my bravest foray with writing. But honestly, writing Hysteria was so much fun that it’s hard for me not to show favoritism towards her. I mean, that book allowed me to explore abandoned lunatic asylums, sit in the jail cells of prisons, and walk through the hallways of a haunted geriatric hospital. It doesn’t get much better than that!
Who or what inspired you to write?
I’ve always been a voracious reader, so in a lot of ways, it seemed natural to start to want to tell my own stories. Furthermore, as a kid, I was obsessed with mythology, particularly Greek and Egyptian history, and reading stories about the underworld and Hades and mummies buried in decorative tombs was clearly a gateway drug to me when it came to writing horror and dark fantasy.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love to travel, read, and be in nature, take pictures, garden, and write every chance I get. I’m a big wine fan, and Dennis and I are total foodies, so trying new cuisines and cooking is high on my list as well. I also really enjoy art, music, and theatre, and I collect rare copies of Alice in Wonderland.
Any traditions you do when you finish a book?
I like to buy/do something that represents either the theme or the research I did for that particular project. For instance, when I finished writing Mourning Jewelry, I went out and bought a gorgeous 19th century Romanian Gypsy portrait of two children that hangs in my office. I researched and looked through a heavy amount of wake photography while working on that collection, so this seemed appropriate, and to this day, it’s one of my favorite pieces of art I own.
Where do you write? Quiet or music?
For the most part, I write in my office at home, but sometimes I’ll write on campus between teaching classes. Regardless though, I always write on my laptop and I have to have music on, sometimes even a movie playing in the background. I work better in chaos, and if that’s not enough, when I’m home, my dogs are usually in my lap or asleep on my feet, too.
Anything you would change about your writing?
I’ve spent the bigger portion of my writing career writing poetry, which is something that I will always do no matter what, but I made myself a promise last year (my new year’s resolution) to write and concentrate more on prose, so that’s what I’m aiming for moving forward. Once I tied up the few projects I’m working on now, I’ll be diving back into the sequel to The Eighth.
What is your dream? Famous writer?
My dream is to travel. My husband and I have a huge list of places we want to explore, and I pretty much want to go everywhere and see everything, all the while writing, drinking good wine, eating great food, and taking fabulous photographs. Plus, I think traveling and going to places you aren’t familiar with is good for the soul, not to mention good for your writing.
  Where do you live?
Pittsburgh, PA.
  Pets?
Oh yes! I have two dogs: an English Bulldog named Edgar Allan Poe and a Pit bull named Apollo. They’re my world.
What’s your favorite thing about writing?
I love the world building. To me, it’s so much fun to create the landscape, history, and rules of a place that only I know about and control. It feels a lot like playing pretend as a kid, and I like to think I have an even bigger imagination as an adult.
Where do you get your ideas?
Everywhere. Music, art, other stories, conversations I have with people, the weather, an injury I might get, nightmares, death, birth…there are stories all around us just waiting to be picked out of the sky and grown into something. It’s all about finding what calls to you.
What is coming next for you?
I’m about halfway through with my next poetry book, an apocalyptic science fiction collection titled The Apocalyptic Mannequin. I’m also finishing up a weird horror novelette that I’m been working on for about three years now. Aside from that, I have a story titled “The Girl with the Death Mask” coming out in Fantastic Tales of Terror, and another story “The Monster Told Me To” appearing in Tales from the Lake, Vol 5, both out this year from Crystal Lake Publishing.

Wow!
Hello, friends!
I barely know where to begin this post but it seems logical to start with Saturday...move in day!!
August 19, 2017
The morning was mostly a blur of driving and making sure all of belongings were packed. We arrived at OBU to a line of cars that, at the end of the road, would be shook, ripped open, and unloaded in a matter of seconds. And no, none of that is an exaggeration. I have BDR and Mama Lis as witnesses. Putting together Kylie and I’s dorm room was not exactly fun but not exactly miserable. Kylie’s dad decided that he wanted to get our loft built so we could be fully set up. But not until 2pm...when we had to be at parent orientation and new student orientation at 3pm...oops. New student orientation was fun but I can’t give details in case any future baby bison happen to read this. ;) We got our small group leaders and had a mini-session...meeting our group members and trying to remember the 18,000 name we had heard that day. Slight exaggeration, but not much! At 4:30 the class of 2021 was blessed by the campus ministry coordinator and was told to say goodbye to mommy and daddy. So at that moment, my mom was crying (which I expected) and so was my dad (Sorry if that embarrasses you dad!). So then, I did shed a few tears because BDR doesn’t just cry. I said goodbye and flew from the eagles nest...or should I say...walked away from...the Herd. ;) See what I did there? We then went to Stake your State dinner where we ate with people from our region. Mine was Oklahoma City area. There was a sign with a Hurts donut on it and the Pops sculpture and if people had to question if they knew what those two objects were, it was a sign to go look for a different region! The night followed with Residence hall meetings and our first night in the dorm!
August 20, 2017
BDR taught me well. I set our air conditioning unit at sixty-seven degrees. And with the fan, my first night in the dorm was NO PROBLEM. I got up, got ready, and headed off to Life.Church Shawnee to meet some more new friends! I met a Tanner and a Trevor. Both very sweet guys...On fire for Jesus and very good at their jobs. The message was AWESOME. It talked about how we all have a calling. We are all on call and called to a different daily standard as Christians. A verse I really took away and Kylie and I wrote on our “weekly Bible verse” message board is this:
“For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in His steps.”
1 Peter 2:21
When I returned to campus, we attended a new student simulation. Not my favorite activity but it was good to know where some of the resources on campus are. From there we went to book study. We are discussing the book “Why College Matters to God” in three sessions this week. Basically, modern day colleges are not centered on God and at one point in time they were, so Christian colleges are setting out to change that and the Christian worldview of students. It’s been fun to sit in with our professor so far! Afterwards, my small group went to Qdoba and then we drove around Shawnee a little bit to just see the city! To cap off the night, our president, David Whitlock, spoke a few words...like an hour and a half worth... He went over the mission and core values of OBU. He's a great speaker! After a small break full of fruit snacks and watermelon, we watched the welcome week skits. That has been my favorite part of the week, thus far! (Yes, even beating Ka-rip wars...sorry Andi!) Kylie and I and our new friend Miranda sat and ROLLED laughing!
August 21, 2017
I finally got a glimpse of real college life on Monday morning. I got up, went for a run, showered, made a protein shake and some coffee and watched Netflix while I did my hair. I realize there was no academic part of that equation, but I hope you see what I’m saying! :P We had academic meetings with the dean of our colleges and advisors after lunch. It was uneventful and hot. Oh, and did you know that health and human performance falls under the College of Humanities and Social Sciences? Definitely thought I was just a science major, lol. Session two of our book study followed our meetings and then we headed to Professor Rohr’s home to be filled with homemade garlic bread, salad, lasagna, and brownies...YUM! Next we headed to Ka-Rp wars. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a super cool gathering and it’s fun to be saying gibberish while everybody else just stands off and watches you get super hyped but it was hot and sweaty and after an hour and a half practicing and actually "performing”, I just wanted to chill in my dorm. We practiced for the walk immediately after. The walk is a tradition where we freshman wear our beanies we were given at orientation and we walk from the fountain to Raley Chapel silently and stand on the steps to sing the alma mater. You do it again on graduation day in your cap and gown. The actual thing is tonight and should be pretty cool! After that, I was pooped so I headed to my dorm and called it a day!
August 22, 2017 - TODAY!
We had the morning free again so I copied my morning from yesterday...run, shower, breakfast, chill...Kylie and I even got a chance to sit and have coffee and just talk about our lives. It was a good time! Her and I had a few things to take care of so we went to do that and then we went to lunch. I just got back from our third and last session of book study and I’m about to head to a walk around type thing where we learn about all the student organizations on campus!
Here’s some cool things about OBU that are probably insignificant to other people but seem okay to mention to me:
1. They have beef at the caf...all the time. (Those that know me, know I’m not the fondest of chicken.)
2. They have Some lifewater in the pomegranate flavor. 0 calories and it’s kinda like vitamin water so yes, I’ve had it at every meal so far and plan to keep it that way! hahaha :)
3. Meals you don’t have to pay for or swipe for, are the best meals.
Funny how all of those have to do with food but oh well. What can I say, I’m a big foodie.
This morning, I told Kylie some of the story of why I was at OBU and she looked at me and said “well I’m glad you’re here!”...I paused for a moment, taken aback, and then replied, “Me too.”
In that moment, I KNEW 100% that this is exactly where God wanted me to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
4.0 out of 5 stars Readers who like their humor heavily seasoned with sarcasm will love this book Her friend, the editor Robert Gottlieb, says it well in his introduction: Nora Ephron, who died last year at age 71, was “a reporter, a profilist, a polemicist, a novelist, a screenwriter, a playwright, a memoirist, and a (wicked) blogger.” She was also a good cook, apparently, and the writer-director of some of the more charming romantic comedies of the past 20 years. The nice thing about books such as THE MOST OF NORA EPHRON, a 550-page collection of her writing, is that they serve two purposes. They’re candy for people who like the author, and they’re a good introduction for the uninitiated. Fans as well as those unfamiliar with Ephron’s work will find much to enjoy here. The book is divided into nine categories, each one devoted either to subjects Ephron wrote about or the many literary forms for which she became famous. As she tells us in “Journalism: A Love Story,” Beverly Hills native Ephron began her career in 1962 when, having just received a degree in political science from Wellesley, she got a job in Newsweek’s mailroom. She soon worked her way up (if up is the right word) to clipper, in which she “ripped up the country’s newspapers and routed the clips to the relevant departments,” and then to researcher, which she says was a fancy term for a fact-checker. She eventually went on to write for other publications, including Esquire and New York magazines and the New York Post, the last of which had offices so dirty that someone once wrote “Philthy” in the thick dust that had collected on a window. In her two decades as a journalist, Ephron perfected the hilariously caustic style that would make her famous. In “The Palm Beach Social Pictorial,” an Esquire piece from 1975, she tells us about a periodical written by and for the wealthy women of Palm Beach, Florida.Read more › Go to Amazon
5.0 out of 5 stars So many pages, so many Noras, and all of them well worth reading. Doesn't much matter which of those 557 pages fall open. Wherever you land you should find a good read. Here's a sampling: There's Nora, the thrice married New Yorker daughter of Hollywood screenwriters. Nora of 1960's Newsweek, when the only jobs open to women were in the mailroom. Nora, the New York Post journalist, novelist, filmmaker and playwright. Nora sitting around with Rob Reiner dithering with improving the script of "When Harry Met Sally." Nora settling scores with her unfaithful second husband in "Heartburn," the book that became a Meryl Streep movie. Nora as writer/director of "You've Got Mail" and "Sleepless in Seattle." Nora, the foodie, on having people to dinner and life in the land of the egg-white omelette. And the Nora who knew early on who Deep Throat was, but nobody believed her. Nora and her profiles of Helen Gurley Brown, Julie Nixon Eisenhower and other well known women. Nora on life in the Google years. Nora on the "O" word and remembering nothing. Nora's script of "Lucky Guy," her 2-act play that ran on Broadway, starring Tom Hanks, in 2013. Nora's "Story of My Life in 3,500 Words or Less" and two one-page lists of "What I Won't Miss" and "What I Will Miss." Nora Ephron died of leukemia at 71 in June, 2012. Go to Amazon
5.0 out of 5 stars Like lingering over lunch with one of my best friends Nora Ephron is funny. Because she seeks the truth, after I've stopped laughing, I find myself oddly, deeply affected and a bit teared up. She left us too soon, so I'm glad I got this great, big fat compendium of her work from the many facets of her life--newspaper and magazine journalist, epic foodie, novelist, screenwriter, playwright. Somehow her love of eating and cooking works its way into a lot of what she's written as a novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. Her confiding tone makes her feel like a girlfriend, someone I stay in touch with long after moving on from the school or job where we first met.The Most of Nora Ephron gives me the opportunity to revisit Ephron's wit and warmth again and again. Go to Amazon
3.0 out of 5 stars Glib, Light Read A perfect metaphor for this book is a comment made by a photographer who took pictures of celebrities jumping. After asking Nora Ephron to jump several times, he told her she'd never be a novelist because she only had one jump in her.I truly appreciate her openness and honesty, but she does seem to be a one trick pony. Does every women she writes about have to have a career in journalism? Do they all have to be variations of her? This book is a sampling of her novels, movies, plays, essays, columns, blogs, and diary entries. There is so much repetition that at times I was bored. Alright already, no one wants to die in an apartment and not have it be discovered for weeks when finally the smell wafts into the hallway of your apartment building. But how many times do we have to read this? By my count, you'll read it three times, which is twice too many. The same goes for most of her observations.Ephron never pretended to be an intellectual or a great writer. She's fun, charming and delightful, which she isn't being cloyingly self-effacing. Don't read this book looking for any insights. You won't find any. But you will have fun, and feel sad that she is no longer with us. Go to Amazon

Hey Girl - 35 Reasons Why We Can't Get Enough Of Ryan Gosling
Fresh off the Golden Globes red carpet with award in hand and a heart-meltingly amazing acceptance speech dedicated to wife Eva Mendes (aka the luckiest woman in the world) in the bag, Ryan Gosling is proving 2017 is still all about the baby goose.
Tap dancing and singing his way through award season's most-hyped movie La La Land (which, yes is totally delightful – check out our review – and why aren't him and Emma Stone a couple already?!) the Gosling reportedly celebrated the film's success at last night's UK premiere by sipping on a new bottle of champagne every time a journo congratulated him on his Golden Globe win. What. A. Lad.
Ryan might be celebrating by sipping on champers but we'll be toasting his good fortune by ever so slightly obsessively stalking 35 things we totally love about our fave A-list actor. In a completely cool and not scary way, obvs.
1. He was home schooled by his mum (for a while anyway!).
2. He was in our favourite scary/not scary kid's TV show Goosebumps.
youtube
3. He was in The Mickey Mouse Club in 1993 with pals Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.
4. He's got friends in high places – while appearing on The Mickey Mouse Club for two years, he lived with co-star Justin Timberlake's family.
5. He’s super hot – Gosling has reportedly turned down the title of People magazine's Sexest Man Alive multiple times. Also, just look at that face.
6. He’s in a band with his friend Zach Shields called Dead Man's Bones.
youtube
7. He’s so into DIY he actually built the kitchen table featured in The Notebook in preparation for his role as Noah.
8. He rocks a gold bomber jacket like no one else.
9. He was destined for stardom – He was born in the same hospital as his The Notebook co-star Rachel McAdams in London, Ontario
10. He’s a foodie and owns a Moroccan restaurant called Tagine in Beverly Hills, California.
11. He’s a lover not a fighter – the Gos dated Rachel McAdams twice after meeting on the set of The Notebook.
12. He’s a badass. His school nickname was Trouble. We wouldn't mind having a run in with him… Just sayin.
13. Science says he’s not attractive. Technically his face isn’t very symmetrical which science deems less attractive. We beg to differ.
14. He’s a family man. He took his mother and sister to the Oscars in 2007 and recently had his second child with his Place Beyond The Pines co-star and all round hotty Eva Mendes.
15. He's a fan of Disney. He named his baby daughter Esmeralda Amanda Gosling.
16. He likes to work out LA style aka at the same gym as Bradley Cooper, Jodie Foster, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, the list goes on!
17. He’s a David Lynch fan and first saw Blue Velvet when he was 14 years old.
18. He’s inspirational – "I've learned it's important not to limit yourself. You can do whatever you really love to do, no matter what it is."
19. You can find his face on just about everything.
20. He loves his own merch.
youtube
21. He’s an indie kid at heart – "Not to discriminate against budgets, I feel that independent films tend to ask more questions and don't pretend to know as much as the bigger films, which tend to think they know everything."
22. He stars in the best Vines.
youtube
23. He’s down to earth – "I try not to make too many movies. I get sick of myself, so I can't imagine how everyone else feels."
24. He’s got his priorities right – "I think the one thing I love most about being an adult is the right to buy candy whenever and wherever I want."
25. He wore a t shirt of Macaulay Culkin wearing a t shirt of him wearing a t shirt of Macaulay Culkin wearing a t shirt of him…
26. He’s got style – "When I'm down in the dumps, nothing gets my toes a-tappin' like putting on my old MC Hammer pants. And they still fit, even though my aunt made them for me when I was eight. But that's the genius of MC Hammer."
27. He’s not sucked in by celebrity – "I can't tell you how many times people go, "Are you Ryan?" Then they take the picture and realise, in that moment, that I'm not Ryan Reynolds."
28. He looks great in a velvet suit.
29. He can tap dance and works a pair of brogues like nobody else.
30. Did we mention he’s ridiculously hot?
youtube
31. THAT scene from The Notebook.
youtube
32. He has his own colouring book.
33. He rocks every look EVER. Blonde, gangster, full beard, no beard, you name it, he nails it.
34. He’s great with the paps.
35. He's an all-round nice guy. After the creator of the Vine 'Ryan Gosling won't eat his cereal' passed away, Ryan in fact ate his cereal in tribute.
