#It's far from a one to one but media literacy often feels like an exercise in connections made in other things

(le same anon) yeah, despite how vocal fandoms have gotten about getting good at media literacy and also in understanding characters that aren't made to be super mega marketable and self-projecty, it's all white noise. ppl and fandoms still go for the cookie cutter marketable characters and tumblr still gets flooded with horrendous takes that you can't even fathom how someone could be so confidently incorrect in a public setting. You just know that these ppl will not interact with anything they don't find cute and act like i interacting solely with bottom of the barrel mainsteam media is all they need to be "smart".
Anyway, gracias for listening to my TED talk. lmao.
I feel like this issue has a lot of complicated factors to it, like people's need for validation and the clinging to the escapism of media. It's still exhausting as hell, but I know that critical analysis is actually a skill that you need to develop from like...a learning environment. Such as school. Or SparkNotes. Everyone just thinks they can do it because they have a lot of thoughts. It's also why writing is such an undervalued skill. Everyone thinks they can do it when it actually requires some amount of technical knowledge and education. I think people would really benefit from understanding that if they want to contribute to fan discussion. Like sure I'm not expecting college-level analysis from randos, but some people exercise so little skill that you question their basic sense of literacy. But that, like I said, is a complicated factor. There is also how people want to be palpable as if that'll make their lives easier. Spoilers: it sure fucking doesn't so just own your messes and trash. And look, that's going to be an ongoing struggle...one made far more difficult with the fucking bullshit discourse about which media is more "morally pure" or what the fuck ever that even means. Arghhhhhh. Again, it's complicated. There are a lot of complicated factors. People are fucking exhausting and the internet often encourages them to be shittier and stupider. We are living in miserable political turmoil. A lot has been fucking happening. It's a lot to deal with.
But also the backlash against SU was SO FUCKING OBVIOUSLY DEEPLY BIGOTED ON EVERY LEVEL. IN A LOT OF FUCKING WAYS from good ol' misogyny to transphobia to racism to ableism. There was even anti-semitism. People really fucking went disgustingly rabid at this funky lil diverse queer show. It was truly horrific and people really ought to be more disturbed.

Embracing Body Positivity: Overcoming Body Image Challenges
In today's society, the issue of negative body image has become increasingly prevalent, affecting individuals of all ages and genders. Negative body image refers to a distorted perception of one's own body, often leading to feelings of dissatisfaction, self-criticism, and low self-esteem. This detrimental mindset can have far-reaching consequences on an individual's mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
One of the primary factors contributing to negative body image is the pervasive influence of media and societal standards of beauty. Constant exposure to unrealistic ideals portrayed in advertisements, movies, and social media platforms can create a sense of inadequacy and pressure to conform to these unattainable standards. As a result, individuals may engage in unhealthy behaviors, such as extreme dieting or excessive exercise, in an attempt to achieve the perceived "ideal" body shape.
Another significant contributor to negative body image is societal judgment and stigmatization based on appearance. Harsh comments, bullying, and discrimination can profoundly impact an individual's self-perception, leading to a negative body image. The fear of being judged or ridiculed may prevent individuals from engaging in social activities or pursuing their goals, hindering personal growth and happiness.
Negative body image can have severe implications for an individual's mental health. It often leads to the development of conditions like depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. These mental health issues can further perpetuate the negative body image cycle, creating a vicious and challenging cycle to break. Seeking professional help, such as therapy or counseling, is essential in addressing and overcoming these challenges.
Addressing negative body image requires a comprehensive approach that involves education, awareness, and fostering a culture of body positivity. Schools, communities, and families play a crucial role in promoting positive body image by encouraging healthy self-esteem, promoting media literacy, and fostering an environment that values diverse body types. Celebrating individuality and emphasizing inner qualities rather than external appearance can help shift the focus away from unrealistic beauty standards.
It is also important for individuals to practice self-compassion and self-care. Engaging in activities that promote overall well-being, such as regular exercise, mindful eating, and cultivating positive relationships, can contribute to a healthier body image. Surrounding oneself with a supportive network of friends and loved ones who appreciate and value each other's unique qualities can also provide a much-needed boost in self-confidence.
In conclusion, negative body image is a pressing issue that affects countless individuals. It is crucial for society as a whole to acknowledge and address this issue by promoting body positivity, challenging unrealistic beauty standards, and providing support to those struggling with their self-image. By fostering a culture of acceptance and self-love, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate world for everyone to thrive in.

I just rewatched the Matrix recently, and of course there’s so much metaphor and symbolism in the movie that each re-watch, it’s fun to overthink everything. I’ve already had a couple of viewings in which I’ve focused on how Neo’s story is a trans narrative and how him ‘being the one’ in many ways is about him discovering himself. It’s a narrative that I think easily stood up before the Wachowskis confirmed it, but obviously is generally easier to spot and analyze with their confirmation.
This time however, I found myself focusing more on Trinity and the romance plot. Let me first just make a disclaimer that this is me reading super into the movie and that I know that in a surface reading, none of this stands up. But if we say... go down the rabbit hole a little of what these themes in the movie could be... well, I obviously feel there's some grounding for it.
In many ways, the romance in this movie is fairly traditional, but in other ways... it's just not. Neo never pursues Trinity in any way. In fact, he generally seems completely oblivious to the possibility that Trinity could be interested in him. Contrast that to Cypher, who feels entitled to Trinity, I think it's worth noting how there's an implication that at some point, he thought he could be The One. He clearly also knew what the Oracle told Trinity about her relationship to the one. And yet while he pines, there's this feeling that he is acutely aware that it's impossible that she would never be interested in him.
Not only though does Neo seem almost to imagine Trinity could never be interested in him and Cypher has a resentful belief that she would never be interested in him, even Trinity acts arguably strange about the whole thing herself. There's an air to her reaction to the concept of 'The One' and her prophecy that while she wants it to be true and believes so much in Morpheus she will, it seems truly impossible to her. She holds it close to her chest and struggles so much with accepting how she feels, that there just feels like there's more going on under the surface. And with the narrative of knowing that Neo can stand in as a metaphor for a trans woman, I couldn't help but read in this viewing that Trinity is a lesbian. She's a lesbian who was told by the oracle that The One would be the man she falls in love with. The Oracle names things as they are in the moment, telling Neo he's not the one. So it makes sense when she saw Trinity that she would refer to him as he sees himself in that moment. But if being The One is also the story of him coming into realizing trans-ness, then it's no longer so strange that a lesbian would fall in love with The One.
Neo discovering himself as The One is the culmination of many things. The battles to get Morpheus back, to fight the agents, but also even Morpheus saying to Neo after he gets rescued, "There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path" is a reiteration of the Oracle's statement that he has it in him to be The One, but it seemed he was waiting for something. He has to choose to embrace it, to live it, and he starts down that path at least by the time he faces Agent Smith in the subway tunnel, declares his name is Neo.
But if we imagine for a moment that Neo was aware that Trinity was a lesbian (she strikes me as the type who wouldn't hide it) or even assumed as much, it would make sense he might just assume that like gravity keeps one grounded, her romantic disinterest in him was obvious. But the moment she whispers to him that he has to live because she loves him, one might see how validating, how solidifying, that could be. How he could start a new life.
I think it was the scene where Cypher had her on the phone, revealing his betrayal, that the headcanon solidified. She cares so deeply for these people, and the actor so well manages to convey her despair as her friends begin dying, but she remains so steady and calm on the phone. She has this steel in her and an unwillingness to let Cypher see how much he's breaking her. And he takes a new tact. He taunts her about the prophecy, seeming to mock her for this destined love. It almost seems to say 'do you really even know yourself?' He's questioning her very sense of self because he wants to hurt her for not making herself accessible to him. He wants to punish her for making room for Neo and not him.
(*The spouse pointed out after watching that it struck him in this scene how Cypher is literally on top of Trinity, speaking to her, looking at her, making her his entire focus, whereas to Trinity, Cypher is just a voice on the other end of the phone. To Cypher Trinity takes up so much space, but it's the opposite for Trinity. Just a neat observation. )
In less tangible ways too, there's something about the way Trinity is played and filmed that felt queer coded. That could just be that it was written and directed by queer people though I admit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
To be fair, I will also admit here that I was happy to look for something that made the romance plot more palatable. To be fair to the movie, I do think it's done in a way that feels fairly organic to the plot, like it's saying something. But on the surface, it can feel pretty par for the course cinematically. So I found it enriching to go looking for a way that the romance would be saying something bigger than what other movies use it for, that further added to the metaphor, and this is how I parsed it for myself to make that work, and I felt like sharing in case anyone else would find it enriching too. Okay mostly to explore these thoughts more fully, but hey, if someone else finds this heightens their enjoyment, then hell yeah.

Business of Art | Five Ways to Stake Your Claim in the Arts Ecosystem
Tumblr media
Takeaways from the inaugural Art World Conference that can help you focus your creative energies to develop a more purposeful practice.
Art World Conference is a new business and financial literacy conference that includes panel discussions, conversations, and in-depth workshops addressing many of the opportunities and challenges faced by artists and arts professionals. The inaugural conference was held on April 25-27 in Manhattan, and brought 300 people together in dialogue around such topics as storytelling, marketing, investing, and growing and sustaining community. Fiscally Sponsored by The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), the conference featured an esteemed line-up of speakers, moderators, and panelists including NYFA Board Member Tiana Webb Evans, Caroline Woolard (ABI ‘17), and Doctor’s Hours Consultants Larry Ossei-Mensah and Steven Sergiovanni. Here are five takeaways from the conference that you can apply to your practice today.
Tell Your Story
You know your work inside and out, and how you talk and write about it matters. Don’t rely on art world jargon to tell your story for you, it often distracts and can unintentionally distance people from your work. Says Writer and Critic Antwaun Sargent: “Sometimes language hides what you’re really after, and what you’re trying to say. Jargon can hinder the fullest expression of your work." He recommends that even artists who are uncomfortable writing write about their work. “It’s a good exercise, and it doesn’t need to be structured in a traditional way. Some of the best artists that I’ve come across have some sort of documentation of their work that is written [by them]. It allows for another expression” of their ideas. Curator Sara Raza frames it as a way of articulating the experience of the studio visit through writing: “Think about a set of words that aren’t overly theoretical but show key concerns of practice that articulate where you’re going and what you’re doing."
Learn by Failing
As an artist, you’re constantly experimenting and problem-solving to achieve new heights in your career. The same mindset can be applied to other critical components of your career. “Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results,” said Mark Rosen, Associate Director of Marketing, Artsy. “It may be a blow to the ego, but you need to recognize what you’re doing and let it evolve,” he added. Rosen spoke specifically to how artists can find success on Instagram, a question that is on the mind of many creatives. One way to determine whether your posts and stories are resonating? First, use a free app like Planoly to plan out your posts in advance. This is an especially great benefit to artists with limited resources, as they can dedicate a block of time each week to schedule content in bulk. Timing is one of several factors that can help make your posts more or less successful, so test out times in two week increments and see what works best for your feed.
With social media and other components of your practice, re-evaluate regularly, as what may have worked for you in the past is no longer working in the present. “Social is changing every 15 seconds, it will change now and it will change again,” advises Rosen. In another panel discussion, Deborah Obaili, President and Executive Director, Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design, cited the words of a colleague who encouraged artists to recognize that “what you need from a personal/creative practice standpoint is very different from the kinds of needs you’ll have in 20, 30, 40 years from now. There’s a continual learning curve.”

Embrace Community
Community matters and can often open the door to new opportunities. Take the example of Prerana Reddy, Director of Programs, A Blade of Grass. She and a group of her peers formed the South Asian Women’s Artist Collective in 1997 to create a space for support and community and means of facilitating and presenting work. One of the members joined the staff of Queens Museum, brought Reddy into the fold, and helped to usher in a new era at the museum where it was more inclusive of its diverse local community. “Being accountable to the local community is not often something that a contemporary art museum does, but over time it became something that the Queens Museum did” and does through today.
Community also extends far beyond the walls of your studio, home, or office. “You’re part of a much larger ecosystem. Part of being in a creative practice is that you have a solid foundation from which to leap from,” said Esther Robinson, Co Executive Director, ArtBuilt, while moderating a discussion on real estate for visual artists. The panel stressed the importance of artists getting involved in their communities and holding state and local government accountable in the fight for affordable live and work space. Said Robinson: Developers “want us to give up. Make sure you know what your own values are and how to move forward.”
Wherever you make connections and foster community, do so authentically. Online, “Genuinely engage with content to help develop relationships. The more love you show, the more love you’ll get,” says Mark Rosen.

Practice Self-Care
Those in the arts community have a lot to juggle, from keeping up with the day-to-day to the larger pressures of defining success in a challenging industry. Lisa Kim, Director, The Ford Foundation Gallery, got to the heart of it by asking the question, “How can you manage your time and emotional resources wisely?” Alex Paik, Artist and Director, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, takes a refreshing approach: “Once you give up the idea that you can balance everything—just do what you are doing as well as you can while you’re doing it...Being present in the tasks that you’re doing makes them feel a bit more manageable.” Another piece of advice that can be applied widely comes from Prerana Reddy: “Find your time to be alone and whatever it is that’s meditative. You need to be bored to be creative. You need to pass boredom to get to creativity. It’s harder to get there because we don’t give ourselves time to be alone. Find that thing that allows you to be bored enough to rest yourself.”
Protect Your Work
“There’s no art market without the artists,” said Artist Mickalene Thomas in an afternoon panel discussion on Protecting Artists’ Rights that reviewed topics including contracts, copyright, and Fair Use. As artists, you have the power to control your narrative and legacy and you don’t have to do it alone. Artists’ Rights Society (ARS) represents the intellectual property rights of more than 80,000 artists and estates worldwide, including Thomas; it’s free and any artist can join. Pro-tip from Thomas: “When you have one blanket contract, it becomes easier to negotiate the others. Just have a clear understanding of what you want from the project, and write those down. If you do have a lawyer, try to go through it yourself first. When it comes time for the lawyer, it’s more for approval.” Said Attorney Anibal A. Luque: “A template is a great way to start protecting and enforcing your rights. Docracy.com is a great resource for usually artist-friendly templates. Another resource is UpConsel. Most contracts are governed state by state, so if you are getting a template make sure it is state specific.”
Additional Resources: Copyright Alliance, copyright.gov, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, A Fair(y) Use Tale, Legal Guide for the Visual Artist (Allworth Press, 2010), and nyfa.org.
Telling your story, learning by failing, embracing community, practicing self-care, and protecting your work are just a few of the ways that you can take a more active role in your arts career to initiate positive change and momentum. “There is no prescribed path, and even if there was it wouldn’t hold everyone in this room” said Deana Haggag, President/CEO, United States Artists during her keynote address at the Art World Conference. “Learning together and showing up for one another as needed is the only way to empower our field,” she added.

Your Fave is Problematic Intro:
For anyone curious I do actually love this genre and only devoted so much time and research to interrogating it because I feel is has merit and could be better.
On my right arm, I have a book tattoo I based on one of my favorite quotes, “It was books perhaps that made me feel I was not completely alone.” That’s been a significant truth in my life. I love books, I’ve read a great many of them in my life. I find that many of the books I’ve read happen to be in the Young Adult fiction genre. These stories made me feel not alone. But having read many of my favorite books multiple times, I realize that they’re far from perfect.
Despite the flaws in the ways their stories were told, I rooted for these girls, I loved them. I wanted Tris to make it in Dauntless. I cried when Edward left Bella. I understood Hermione’s insecurity.  I wanted Katniss Everdeen to defeat the capital. I applauded when Juliette realized she was not cursed but gifted. The stories we love when we’re young shape us, in positive and negative ways.
Not everyone who reads young adult novels is actually a young adult, but many are and in that demographic, there is potential and vulnerability. (Anderson 3) Worldviews and political views are still forming. These readers are at an age where they are most receptive to messages about change and inequality.  Years after the book series and their adolescence ends, the messages stay with them. (Anderson 1) Young Adult novels give readers the opportunity to learn about people different from them, as reading is an empathy fostering exercise. (Chiaet) It can also provide marginalized groups the opportunity to see that know they are not alone.
People write off YA because of its cliches, but also the fact that it is often written by women and for girls. (Anderson 13) As someone who came of age reading young adult fiction, it’s not all bad.  There are sometimes solid metaphors about systemic inequality. There are often profound friendships. The genre tackles very difficult subjects and takes on issues facing young people that the adult fiction genre will not. These books tell an often dismissed age group that their feelings are no less valid because they are young.
On the other side, the diversity in young adult fiction can be lacking. (Lee & Low) The storylines that heroines get in comparison to their male counterparts are often almost entirely tied up in romantic relationships.  Those relationships are often wildly unhealthy. Young women in the stories are pitted against one another as if it is the most natural thing in the world, and the female gender is often demonized. Although the vampires and love triangles might suggest otherwise, this genre has merit. Before the voting booth and after years of Disney princesses, for a few hundred pages YA novels allow teenaged readers to keep believing in magic while validating their experiences.
Because of the many, many issues with the genre as a whole, I’ve often been asked by forward-thinking friends how I reconcile my ideals, being a media literate individual, and my readings these books. For a long time I didn’t know how to respond and worried that to be a feminist and fan when embarking on these epic tales, I had put my ideals on the backburner while reading. That is until a year ago. A friend of mine who knows my love of books and the place in my heart the Harry Potter series holds sent me an article that revolved around a study. The conclusion of the study was that kids who grew up reading Harry Potter books were more likely to grow up to be accepting individuals. (Bergland, “Does Reading Harry Potter Reduce Prejudice?”)  Reading this I felt a sense of vindication. In my childhood the Harry Potter books were banned from my personal library by my family, but I discovered their magic anyway as a teenager. They’re by no means perfect, but reading this study I realized that these books managed to convey the evils of injustice better than many history books. (Bergland, “Does Reading Harry Potter Reduce Prejudice?”) So much so that some of these kids as young adults took JK Rowling’s lessons out into the real world and founded the Harry Potter Alliance, an organization that focuses on literacy, awareness raising, and using other books such as The Hunger Games to highlight real-world injustice. (What We Do,“The Harry Potter Alliance”)
There are stories that communicate so many harmful messages to their audience they cannot be redeemed. However, I also believe there are stories with positive and empowering messages, that also include tropes and stereotypes that don’t contribute to the goal of an egalitarian society. Some of my favorite books are problematic, but they are not entirely without merit. I chose this project to point out what is wrong with YA and how I believe it could be better.

Visual Literacy-Aesthetic Scanning Exercise
First spend some time looking and seeing this work….Then write your responses you may need to ask an attendant to help answer the first three questions.
1.     What do the records contain, and what is the significance of the colors?  Choose three to listen to and describe what you hear.
I listened to three records, and all of them contained audio recordings of officer-involved shootings that resulted in the death of a black male, either of the audio recording of the encounter itself, or later testimony submitted after-the-fact. What I noticed most were two things: the lexicon the police officers used when describing the physical descriptions and mannerisms of the person to die. The best way I can describe what I hear is the following: there are police officers, before even meeting a suspect, who immediately go from zero-100 and seemingly say everything necessary to justify taking deadly action before the situation is even thoroughly assessed. Do I hear clear racial bias/racism in the radio communications of police the police officers I listened to on the records? Yes, I do.
2.     What is the significance of the tables, why are they different lengths?
I could not discern the significance of the different table lengths. As far as their overall significance, all I could think when I approached them and sat at them was that they felt and looked a lot like the tables I would see in jail and juvenile hall during my previous times spent in such institutions.
3.     What is in the file folders?  Choose 3 to open up and describe what you see inside.
In two of the file folders, I found case files of murders of some well-publicized murders of black men, use of force reports, and 911 call transcripts. In the last folder, I actually found absolutely nothing inside, except the opinion form that exhibitors could fill out if they had any input on what they observed. I can’t remember the exact name of the person, but it was involving a murder that happened in Texas. Because I was puzzled by the blank box, and perhaps because of overthinking it, I filled out one of the forms and submitted it asking, “What is the meaning of the empty box?” I have not yet received a reply. They have my contact information. I will keep you posted, professor!
What do you “see” (close “scientific” observation)?
What is the story or visual narrative presented? Is it abstract or representational (figures and recognizable objects)?  Explain:
My experience may have been different than other exhibitors, purely because I happened to walk in while there was a record table that was playing on a loop. All I could hear was a very loud “Shots fired! Shots fired! Shots fired!” over and over and over until I took the needle off the record vinyl. I then walked back to the ‘start’ of the exhibit and carefully observed the black and white drawing of the person who was shot over 15-20 times (I do not remember the exact number). The picture illustrates the entry, exit, and recovery wounds sustained while being gunned down by police officers. The circles and triangles indicating entry and exit wounds was simple but dramatic: it showed this young man, who I believe was in his late teens, to have been shot in both the front and back of his body.
I then moved back to the record tables and was overwhelmed with how many there were. I chose three at random to the best of my ability and was expecting slightly better sound quality with some of these recordings; it was often difficult to discern what was being said. I then proceeded to the evidence room and took a look at a few boxes I picked at random, as I did not have time to look at all of them. The tables were full of other UCI students who were examining boxes and reading documents. The tables felt much like those I experienced while incarcerated and believe their deployment in this exhibit was intentional to exude the feel of a jail.
After examining some boxes, I read both of the photographic enlargements of the Zimmerman statements and case document excerpts.
What is the medium (paint, metal, stone, photography, video, etc.)?  How has the artist/sculptor used the “tools” of the artist?  Describe the “elements”:  color, value, line, texture, shape, form, space.  Describe how these elements are organized in the composition:  unity, contrast, repetition, balance, etc.
For medium, the artist employs many different types: photography, physical paper media, light design, and interactive media design. These tools were employed in a manner that I found to be very straightforward, unambiguous, and direct. This was achieved by the highly simple, yet stark layout of the various elements like the entry/exit wound piece being exhibited very plainly, so as to highly the severity and fatality of each x and o. Walls and rooms differentiated each installation, which I felt was underscored by the record tables being exhibited all on their own in the very dimly (and grimly) lit room. The entire exhibit, but mostly the records portion, was so symmetrical and sterile, yet did the perfect job at filling the exhibit with death, fatality, tragedy, racism of police, that no exhibitor could escape the feeling.
What does it mean (interpretation)?
All art is communication, a “conversation” between the artist and the viewer.
What is the title of the work?  Does this help explain the “artist intent”?
The title of the work is “American Monument.” At first glance, I did not believe the title to readily and accurately represent the work. However, after some brief thinking, I believe the title (in line with your question) was more to explain the artist’s intent, which I perceive to be the following:
I believe the artist is indicating that police brutality has become one of the cornerstones of America, so to speak; that it’s an indelible black mark on a country that bills itself as an equality-harboring, fair, and just government and society.
What is the date of the work and what does this tell you about the historical and/or cultural context of the work?
I don’t know if I am aware of the correct answer to this. All I know is that this project effectively began in 2018 with the gathering of information via the Freedom of Information Act process. It tells me that before the enactment of the FOIA, police brutality was legally and wrongly kept from the public eye. Only because of the FOIA and the persistence of good and oppressed people was this art installment created. Now that we have more information on previous police brutality from the last 50 years, can we now start processing, appreciating, and acting on this information.
What does the work mean to you?  What is your emotional and intellectual response to the work (there are no wrong answers)?  If you had choices why did you select this work?
I have experienced police injustice. I have experienced a dozen sheriff’s deputies drawing their guns on me, itching to gun me down. I have experienced watching my friends, while I was in jail with them, get abused by jail staff. All I can say about my emotional and intellectual response is that I could not help but feel the intense frown and furled eyebrows that were on my face the entire time I walked the exhibit. When I walked out of the exhibit, I was exhausted both mentally and physically. It was an uncomfortable experience. But I also felt that my experiences were no where near as dangerous or fatal or unjust as the experience of the American black man in the United States today.
Is it any good (judging)?  How do you know? Explain:
Yes, it is a very good exhibit. I think it’s good because it made me think, empathize, and FEEL. It was a reminder that police brutality is something I, as a citizen of this country, must stand up against. However, I really wish each recording was connected to its own headphones, so I could hear the audio better.
What else do you want to know about this work of art, what do you wonder?
I want to know why one of the boxes I opened contained no documents or files on the man who was killed by police in Texas. I’m really hoping someone calls me and says that was a deliberately designed box, and not that someone just misplaced the file contained therein.

It is a recognized fact for many American companies which has gone offshore in the Philippines that it is better to outsource within the nation compared to different Asian counterparts. I encourage my distributed groups to have two screens on during our meetings. Essay代写:News night
Newsnight is a BBC two news in-depth programme which was launched in 1980 and follows current events. Monday through Friday, 50 minutes Monday through Thursday, 30 minutes Friday, 10:30 p.m. The program has a wide audience, in the British radio and television press and public reputation, has a wide and far-reaching impact. The reason why newsnight has a great influence on the industry and the audience is mainly due to the choice of topics to be discussed, the choice of many guests with different views, and the excellent performance of several hosts with rich interview experience.
In 2010, the author went to the UK as a visiting scholar to carry out news research, during which he made a detailed observation and research on news night for three months. During this period, there have been many major news events, such as the British labor party election, student protests against the government's increase of college tuition fees, the British government's public spending cuts, the Irish bank crisis, the rescue of the trapped miners in Chile, the oil spill in the gulf of Mexico and so on. These topics are high-end and involve many fields, such as social politics and economy. News events contain deep news connotations that can be explored. Therefore, they provide a broad space for in-depth reporting and topic discussion. High-end on the one hand to ensure the quality of the program, to meet the theme of the in-depth news investigation program characteristics; On the other hand, it also provides a solid foundation for the expansion of program content.
Although these contents are very important and macro, the creator of the program can always find a way to make more viewers interested or feel that the topic has some connection with People's Daily life. In the editing of the program, it is often shown that they have a deep understanding of the topic and can enter the topic from a small entrance to attract the attention of the audience. During Britain's Labour election, for example, newsnight looked at the process in more detail than it followed it. More attention has been paid, in particular, to the bitter contest between the two brothers in the Labour leadership contest. After the final vote result was announced, I had my own unique views on the reaction of the two people. They please psychologist response to two brothers at the time of the scene in accordance with the program to analyze professional video, which referred to the elder brother, at the moment of congratulations brother win hug when head toward one side and performance of a complex emotions, both to show should be generous, at the same time, inevitably feel great regret. Such analysis reveals the complexity and subtlety of the competition from a new perspective for the audience, and at the same time makes the report more interesting. This is an example of newsnight's meticulous approach to big issues. This creates a greater appeal to the audience.
Invite a large number of important people from all walks of life as guests, to enhance the level of topic discussion, while fully demonstrating the objectivity of the program report
During the 3-month observation and research of the program, 5 issues were broadcast every week for 12 weeks, and the number of invited guests in each program was about 10, reaching 18 at the most. According to rough statistics, the number of guests in 12 weeks was more than 600.
Newsnight is very particular about the choice of guests, most of whom are members of parliament from major British parties, foreign ambassadors to the UK, trade union leaders, economists, politicians, scientists, writers and journalists. These guests are generally from all walks of life have a amount of authority figures, and they are holding different views into the studio broadcast time or in different synchronic discussions, program states her views to the guest to enough space, so the conflicts appear in programs often view, present a tit-for-tat scenes, which was the show's pursuit of a creative person to effect. On the one hand, this approach makes the program have strong attraction and better meet the audience's psychological needs for different opinions on the same issue. On the other hand, the report of the program on problems presents objectivity, that is, it gives the audience more space to think and understand problems, which reflects the characteristics of British news report.
During the British Labour party's election, the Labour leader program invited five candidates to show the scene and voters on behalf of face-to-face communication, candidate expounded his campaign claims and questions from voters, become the protagonist of show guests at this time, the program of journalists, the host are standing in a neutral point of view, as their views of the platform.
However, when the labor party leadership election entered the most intense competition stage, the program still cleverly revealed the connotation of the topic through the performance of the guests, and showed the neutral attitude of the program and the objectivity of the report. It also set up a small segment for voters to comment on candidates after they leave the field. What they do is present a reality that gives the audience room to judge and think.
In another example, on September 22, 2010, two leading members of parliament from the conservative and Labour parties were invited to give their views on government cuts to public spending. One of the two guests sat in the studio, and the other communicated with the studio guests through the big screen. When it came to the reasons for the cuts, the debate was so heated that the two guests almost fell out. Take a typical debate segment:
By this time, it was clear that the two guests were already at loggerheads, their voices intertwined, in a state of anxiety. At this point, the host did not interrupt the guests, but gave them more space to fully explain their views. In the show, what appears to be a debate between two people is actually a debate between two parties. Through such debate, both parties are clarifying their practices and defending themselves, and the public can have a clearer understanding of the context of the government's decision. This way also more fully reflects the objectivity of the program to follow the principle. In the program of "news night", because high-level guests are selected and they hold different and sometimes opposite views, the program is often full of explosive exchanges of views, which reflects the program's pursuit of diversified topics and views.
The hosts of this program are worthy of attention, and they are also a strong support for the success of the program. These presenters have long and rich experience as journalists, which enables them to have a good interview and the ability to control the topic.
Different from China's news culture, in the British radio and television media, the vast majority of news presenters start their careers as reporters and editors. In long-term news editor's professional, they gradually got fully exercise, mainly reflected on the insight for news events, deep understanding and reaction is rapid, the majority of topic news program is closely connected with the important news of the day, they are deepening and expansion, therefore give host look at news events and the perspective of the inner meaning of time is limited, which requires the host good news literacy.
Newsnight's four main presenters are Jeremy paxman, kirsty walker, Gavin eisler, and Emily matrice. The average age is 53. Jeremy paxman, 60, is the oldest. This not only means age, more important is that their life experience makes their ability to understand the society more profound and rich. Jeremy paxman appeared on newsnight in 1989 and interviewed a number of important politicians.
Rich news experience, so that the host from all walks of life in the face of important figures from the community can be calm, calmly deal with. The ability to grasp and lead the topic, the guests' ability to raise questions and the ability to find the root of the questions all fully show the key role played by the quality of journalists.
On the second day of the Labour party's leadership election, the show's main presenter gave an exclusive interview to Ed miliband, the new Labour leader, and presenter Jeremy paxman's questions during the interview are well worth studying. In the 8-minute interview, he raised a total of 22 questions. The density of the questions is obvious, but more importantly, the questions he raised are very potential to generate power, and the implied meaning behind the questions is profound. In the interview, the host started from the subtle but easy to cause a sense of affinity:
On the surface, this is just a declarative sentence without the characteristics of a question, but in fact, it is a very clever way to enter the topic. Talking from the family background, it seems kind and natural, thus creating a good interview environment and laying a good foundation for the smooth progress of the following interview. Looking at other interviews with Jeremy paxman, it is clear that this is one of his more frequent and effective interviews.
Newsnight hosts have long journalistic careers, a microcosm of how British news presenters have grown up. In the journalism education system of British universities, there is no broadcasting department like that of China, so as to train presenters. There are only journalism departments in British universities. For students majoring in radio and television journalism, the training mode is designed according to the actual situation of British journalism. For example, the journalism department of the university of Sheffield, a famous university in the UK, is a good example of the cultivation of postgraduate students majoring in radio and television journalism. The courses they learn are all about how to be a qualified journalist, which is the primary key factor and the foundation. Meanwhile, according to the actual operation mode of radio and TV station, we provide students with proper audio report training. For example, live reports, telephone links, studio audio reports and so on. They also provide voice training for graduate students in radio and television journalism, but focus on how to articulate the elements of news in spoken language rather than on factors such as sound.
"News night" program has a very important typical significance, observing this program can play the role of "dissecting the sparrow". The style of the program, the choice of topics and the performance of the host are all good research materials. At the same time, we can also find the factors that can be used for reference. For example, the training model of the press-type host, especially the ability of the host to ask questions is more worthy of study. The objectivity of the report is the strict criterion they follow. In order to show the objectivity of the report in the program, the choice of questions and the use of vocabulary in specific languages are very important and detailed. Therefore, the observation and research of this program have realistic and long-term significance.
