The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 wreaked havoc upon central Tokyo, causing the collapse of buildings and, tragically, igniting fires. In its aftermath, Tokyo embarked on an ambitious journey to rebuild the city, employing modern city planning techniques that encompassed a grid-pattern network of streets, parks, electric power lines, natural gas lines, waterworks, and sewage lines.
However, the costs associated with this modernization and urban planning surpassed the national budget, leading to a significant reduction in the scale of these developments, which were then limited to only a few specific areas of Tokyo. The Tokiwadai neighborhood was among the fortunate areas selected for city planning, resulting in the construction of modern architectural structures.
Erected in 1937 within the Tokiwadai residential neighborhood of Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, near the former Musashi-Tokiwa Station (now Tokiwadai Station) on the Tobu-Tojo Line, the Tokiwadai Photo Studio stands as a rare example to the vision that architects and city planners held for Tokyo's rebirth.
The building's first floor housed the owner's private residence, featuring a bathroom, kitchen, three bedrooms, an office, lavatory, and a small study.
On the second floor, there was an office/workspace and a spacious photo studio. This studio boasted a sloped ceiling, allowing the installation of large frosted glass windows on the northern side of the building. This architectural choice ensured ample soft lighting, a characteristic feature of early 20th-century photo studios, owing to the absence of modern lighting equipment at the time.

Takashi Murakami
Tumblr media
Who is Takashi Murakami? He is a famous Japanese contemporary artist and the founder of the Superflat Movement. But is also most known for his bright and colourful art. Born on the 1st February 1962 in Itabashi City, Tokyo, Japan, and from an early age he was heavily influenced by manga, anime, and Japanese art. With his love for art he pursued his career by studying at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and this is where he studied traditional Japanese art. Murakami was able to adapt and develop Japanese art to suit the aesthetics of todays world.
Tumblr media
Takashi Murakami created the iconic Superflat Movement, the term Superflat refers to how in Japanese art in history has appeared to be flat and has continued to do so in modern time manga and anime by staying as 2D. Manga and Anime are a huge part of Japanese culture and has gone world wide and become a big part of the world entertainment. Japan has a large pop culture surrounding anime and manga and this brings in a lot of tourist attraction especially to the city of Tokyo. The Superflat characteristics are ‘bold cartoony outlines’ as well as bold cheerful colours and don’t show any depth or gradient. Superflat is similar to the pop art movement by Andy Warhol and Takashi Murakami even has a creative workshop called ‘Andy Warhol’s Factory’. Some common themes with the Superflat movement is to highlight Japanese entertainment culture of anime and manga but it also points out the disturbing side of this culture such a ‘Lolicon’ which can be described as childlike characters being sexualised. But on the other note the movement also highlights a massive part of Japanese cuteness culture of art work being kawaii.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His most recognisable character is Mr. Dob and he appears throughout Takashi Murakami’s art work, he can be noticed with his big round ears, wide circle eyes with eyelashes, and a big smile with sharp teeth. The character is playful and his name derives from the Japanese word “dobojite” which translates to “why?” It also refers to the markets of mascots like Mickey Mouse, Hello Kitty, and Pikachu to name some examples which with these mascots keeps markets and trends alive. Mr Dob first featured in a three panelled acrylic artwork titled 727, in the art work Mr Dob appears to be riding on a traditional Japanese portrayal of a wave, this is where Takashi Murakami begins to mix traditional art with modern art.
Tumblr media
Another famous character concept that he has created was KaiKai and KiKi in the 2000s. These characters typically refer to the Kawaii concept in Japanese culture, as they are small cute little child like characters. The names KaiKai and KiKi actually refer to a 16th century term “kaikaikiki” which was used to describe significant paintings as “powerful and sensitive”. This shows how Takashi Murakami really brought in the traditional Japanese art form to bring about a new style and era.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A very core part of pop culture around the world is Takashi Murakami’s Flowers. Now everyone has seen these flowers and knows of these flowers, they are an iconic part of pop culture and are used to represent hyper child like pop. This character has appeared in a lot of places like Kanye West album covers and music, Billie Eilish’s You should see me in a crown music video, fashion such as Ben Baller Jewellery, Tourbillion Watches, Louis Vuitton, Vans, and supreme. This is just to name a few. The bright bold flowers is an iconic art work and will forever be remembered and used in pop culture.
I very much like Takashi Murakami’s work this is contemporary art that I can greatly enjoy and appreciate. The bright bold colours are very striking and appealing to the eye and draws your attention. The cartoony design and style creates a good sense of child like behaviour and inflicts a happy response. The mix with traditional Japanese art is a great way to pull history and the modern time together. As someone who already likes manga and anime, it was interesting to learn about the Superflat movement and how this extraordinary artist helped build pop culture and shape our entertainment industry today. Even though sometimes Murakami can repeat the same characters it actually is nice to see the characters being repeated as they are iconic figures of pop culture, they are the mascots.

Finding Rentals in Central Tokyo - Azabu Juban and Shirokane
Finding the right place to live in Tokyo is a big challenge. The best way is to do some research online and familiarize yourself with the main real estate agents in your chosen neighborhood. Most sites are user-friendly and offer you a good overview of what is available in your price range. You can also filter for rental properties by room type and number of bedrooms. This is really handy, as it saves you from scrolling through endless results that don't fit your criteria. Check their site to know more details 東京都心の賃貸.
Rentals in central Tokyo like Azabu Juban and Shirokane are popular with foreigners looking for high-end living near some of the city's most famous attractions. For example, Roppongi Hills is home to luxury shopping and restaurants, while the fashionable Meguro-dori and Platinum-dori areas boast designer boutiques. The Take-no-Yu onsen in the heart of Azabu-juban is a hidden gem that has been in operation for over a century, and its hot spring water is famed for healing the skin.
If you are looking for a more affordable option, consider the suburban areas of Tokyo. They are much less expensive than the central six wards, but still have easy access to the main train lines and plenty of stores.
The cheapest districts (or "ku") are those further north and east of the city center, including Adachi-ku, Arakawa-ku, Kita-ku, Itabashi-ku, Nerima-ku, and Suginami-ku. They are also less densely populated, so there is more space to spread out. They are also home to some of the most famous parks in Tokyo, such as Meguro-ku and Nerima-ku Park.
Another option is to find a share house or private flat in the suburbs. This is a great option for families or those who prefer a more home-like environment. However, it's worth noting that share houses are more expensive than renting a normal apartment in the suburbs, and you will usually need to pay a guarantor fee of 0.5-1 month's rent.
When it comes to longer-term apartment rentals, the most important factor is location. You should try to get as close to your local train station as possible, since this will allow you to travel easily into central Tokyo without paying too much for transport. Also, try to choose a area that has a unique downtown or shopping district, so you'll have more options for dining and nightlife.
If you are not planning on buying property, renting an apartment for a long period of time in Japan is the most cost-effective option. Unlike in the West, most apartments in Japan are unfurnished and you'll need to furnish them yourself, so be sure to budget for this. In addition to the monthly rent, you'll need to pay a deposit, key money and an agent or guarantor fee. However, many rental agencies or shared homes offer all-inclusive packages where you can avoid these start-up costs.

#95【生配信の企画を考えよう】
Title: “Let’s think about future livestream plans” In this program they are going to propose/discuss ideas for future niconico livestreams. As they are planning to do a livestream per month, Kaoru thinks they should discuss some plans for those. Tasai proposes they watch a Hanshin game (baseball game). Kaoru talks about the customized baseball tshirt he got from a fan ( he wore it at the livestream) and says he wore that to raise the mood but hanshin tigers lost the game. So, they decided the first plan is to watch a Hanshin baseball game wearing the team uniform.
Joe says he could dress as a typical Kansai old lady to watch Hanshin tigers. He says he got confused with an old lady especially when he had longer hair. He thinks there are a lot of people who looks like that in Itabashi ( a Tokyo Ward). That’s how they think that the second plan could be looking for Joe in Itabashi. Joe thinks there are a lot of people who look like that in itabashi and Kita ( a line appears on screen ‘Joe is originally from Hachioji, another Tokyo ward) They think it would be cool to ask viewers to send pictures of people who looks like Joe. Kaoru thinks it would be funny if someone from Joe’s neighborhood sent a pic of Joe not knowing it’s actually the real Joe. Kaoru also adds that he forgot to tell Joe in the livestream but, he heard from a staff person who lives in a neighborhood close to Joe that this person saw Joe at the supermarket with a woman. Joe tries to  avoid answering while Tasai teases him, but he thinks that the woman might be a staff member of his crew. Kaoru teases him like “a staff member? in a supermarket?” and Joe says his Kimi no Tou office is around that area. Kaoru keeps teasing him and Tasai asks if the staff member is pretty, Joe says she is indeed pretty.
They also mention they could do some interactive games at niconico or chatting with fans during the livestream using Zoom. They discuss if they could make a livestream with audience and they suggest doing a “release livestream.” Kaoru says this month they are going to be featured in wowow and next month they are releasing a mv collection. When Joe asks Kaoru about the release date, Kaoru hesitates and says “soon”. Kaoru thinks they could watch it online and comment it, viewers could also comment it.  They also have the karuta game they did to play in a livestream. Kaoru suggests Tasai brings again his pressure cooker. Joe pressures Kaoru to say something more and Kaoru laughs saying he sounds like the manager when tells him “Could you please write songs faster?” lol.
Finally, Joe proposes to do a livestream right after a Dir en grey live. Tasai seems so excited with that idea and Kaoru seems to consider it. Joe says it wouldn’t be a long livestream, like 30 min, and just Kaoru. Kaoru says we wouldn’t see anyone else in the dressing room. They would do it like an hour after the live is over. Joe says they can do it after a Tokyo live or they can go to some city Dir en grey is playing, Kaoru says “you just want to travel right?” lol and says Tokyo would be ok. Joe says they could stay at the same hotel than Dir’s and Kaoru says that maybe the wifi doesn’t work properly so they can’t do the live stream so he insists that Tokyo is ok. Joe says that he thinks that the wifi works fine in the hotels they stay in lol. Joe suggest they could also have lunch or so, and Kaoru says he thinks that would be like an event, but he likes the idea of traveling and so. Kaoru says they played in Shizuoka (Shizuoka is  about 1h and half from Tokyo). Tasai says he wants to eat shizuoka typical food and Kaoru says he did with a beer and Joe seems delighted with the idea. The program comes to an end, and Kaoru says they will announce the livestream and details later.
