Match Review: Manchester United 0-1 Crystal Palace

Fuck me for being optimistic after the mid-week game eh.

Palace were not very good. Roy Hodgson might have the rub of the green against us, and Joachim Andersen did score a beauty of a goal, but that was all Palace had to offer. We were the issue. United were insipid. It's so fucking frustrating watching players half-arse it.

United's XG was 1.67 to Palace's 0.81. 77% possession to United. 19 shots but only 4 on target....

I feel sorry for Rasmus Højlund. It's not easy to establish yourself in the Premier League, but especially so when your team isn't finding you with passes and layoffs as the centre forward. Can't score if you're only given the ball in sub-optimal positions.

What differed though between today and mid-week? The answer is energy. Casemiro is not winning duels this season. 81.4% last season is now 28.1% this season. It might be part of his slow start, but it's a huge problem for United because - as we saw today - Mount offers energy and pressing, Bruno is your creativity gamble, but Casemiro's the deep lying player that's effectively left the back gate open and oops, pressure on the defence.

A big part of why Tuesday went well was because Hannibal brought energy and tenacity to the United midfield. His work rate, along with Mount's, allowed Casemiro more energy-friendly playmaker duties, and in fairness he delivered. Have we lost last season's Case? Feels like we'll be after Evan Ferguson plus a DM next summer at this rate.

Oh, and Hannibal: why was he not selected, or even used as a sub, today? Rest ahead of Tuesday? Spared from the ignominy of being lumped in with shite?

Defensively, United were okay. Onana wasn't at fault for the goal and was reliable yet again. The makeshift defence was also okay, but no proper LB makes a huge difference to United's build-up play and the overlapping. If Reguilon is back (or any of them) then Casemiro can be benched for Amrabat, and my god would we see a drastic improvement in United's threat.

There's also the question to be asked about Rashford. Garnacho was labelled as playing not that well when he made some starts, but smashed it in the mid-week fixture. Today, a rested Rashford did... not a lot. If Garnacho is getting benched for being sub-par, now's the time to apply that to Marcus. Wake him up.

Hope is not all lost though. Varane and Dalot posted strong duel and passing stats. Mount and Bruno had good passing - and final third passing in particular. I do worry about them both fitting into midfield together though. I'd like to play them as CAM/RW and rotate during the game, but Bruno's crossing today was dire. Mount would be much more reliable out wide.

Next up is Galatasaray in the Champions League. If Reguilon isn't back then I'd start Hannibal in CM, though to be honest i'd not be against Dalot LB/Lindelof RB and Amrabat/Hannibal as the pivot.

Drop Casemiro. Drop Rashford. Demand better. Or we'll be demanding a new manager (yet again).

Nunez sighed, stuffing his phone in his pocket. He replayed that particular message from his brother every day when he woke up, even before he got out of bed. It had got him through his tough early days at Liverpool, when he hadn’t been so sure that he was loved.

Klopp seemed friendly enough, but there was no denying that the German could be frightening. Nunez found that out the hard way, during his home debut for Liverpool.

“You’re the new kid, right?” the Palace defender had prodded him. He breathed down on his neck, making Nunez shudder. Joachim Andersen was an inch taller than him, seventeen pounds heavier, and far more built. “You think you can survive here?”

Nunez had just nodded, unsure how to answer without botching his English. In response, Andersen had shoved him in the back and went on. Nunez yelped in alarm as he stumbled, nearly hitting the ground. This happened three times, and the referee didn’t take notice even once.

The fourth time had been the final straw. They were preparing to take a corner, and Andersen had attached himself to Nunez again. Nunez just ignored him—until Andersen leaned over to whisper in his ear.

“Perdedor. Pareces un lagarto y eres tan inútil como uno también. Apuesto a que tu familia desearía que nunca hubieras nacido.”

The world seemed to slow to a freezing halt around Nunez. Andersen had insulted him the entire match—but this one?

His heart cracked in a million pieces as his head set out to do the same thing to Andersen. A flash of red, and Nunez was thrown from the pitch to the lions’ den, where he still had to face a furious Klopp.

Klopp never came that day. Instead, he avoided Nunez for a long time. So long, that Nunez wondered if Klopp loved him enough to yell at him.

Perdedor—loser. Nunez could shrug that off easily.

Pareces un lagarto y eres tan inútil como uno también. He’d been insulted about his looks before. He could deal with that.

But the last one? That his family had never wanted him? It stung. It hurt like salted iodine on a fresh wound and nothing could cure it.

Apuesto a que tu familia desearía que nunca hubieras nacido.

If his own family didn’t want him, then why would a whole team of strangers? Why would thousands of people, who didn’t even know his middle name, want him?

If nobody wanted him…then nobody loved him. Clear as day.

En Gaule, vers 50 avant Jésus-Christ, dans la forêt sacrée des Druides. Le Grand Prêtre Orovese, qui prêche la révolte contre l'occupant romain, invite son peuple à se rendre sur la colline pour fêter la pleine lune, leur chaste déesse. Le proconsul romain Pollione, a eu secrètement deux enfants de la Grande Prêtresse Norma, fille d'Orovese. Volage, il aime maintenant la jeune Adalgise et voudrait l'emmener à Rome — car il ne supporte plus ce peuple de barbares.

Sous la clarté de la lune, Norma coupe le gui avec une faucille d'oc et invite les Gaulois à préserver la paix. Elle dit ensuite à su servante son pouc Pollione, que les druides pourtant mettraient volontiers à mort. Adalgise, amoureuse de Pollione, demande aux dieux de lui épargner cette passion. Mais Pollione la rejoint et elle consent à se sauver avec lui. En tout innocence, elle va se confier à Norma. Évoquant sa propre destinée, Norma lui montre la plus grande compassion... jusqu'à ce que paraisse l'objet de cet amour, Adalgise, enfin mise au courant de la situation, jure de mourir plutôt que de partir avec le traître.

Norma, désespérée, voudrait tuer les enfants que lui a donnés Pollione. Elle n'en trouve pas le courage. Elle fait alors appeler Adalgise et lui demande d'épouser le Romain et d'emmener les enfants. La jeune fille rivalise en grandeur d'âme et promet de persuader le parjure : il reviendra à de bons sentiments! Les deux « rivales se réconcilient pleinement. Orovese apprend l'arrivée d'un nouveau proconsul, encore plus cruel que Pollione. Mais l'heure de la révolte ne tardera plus.

Adalgise a échoué : Pollione veut l'enlever de force. Norma jure de se venger dans des flots de sang et déclenche le grand soulèvement des Gaulois. Il faut aux druides une victime expiatoire : Pollione, arrêté, tiendra ce rôle. Dans un dernier entretien, Norma tente de le fléchir. Vainement : « Plutôt la mort, dit-il, que de renoncer à Adalgise ! » Elle lui montre que sa disparition sera le signal affreux carnage il réclame pourtant le supplice.

Elle appelle alors les Gaulois et fait préparer le bûcher pour une autre victime : une prêtresse qui a renié ses vœux. Elle avoue publiquement sa faute. supplie Orovese d'épargner les enfants et monte au bûcher avec Pollione.

En 1954, Maria Callas est dans la plénitude de sa voix ; elle est aussi à ce moment où elle va faire redécouvrir la vérité du bel canto romantique, débarrassé des traditions véristes, restituant la pureté de la ligne, la science des nuances, l'alchimie des inflexions pour construire un personnage depuis sa peau jusqu'à son sang, jusqu'à sa moelle.
