veronica mars rewatch 2x03: cheatty cheatty bang bang

• hey it’s that famous comedian. I’m blanking on his name but he’s in that episode of friends where he plays the stoned chef who comes to Monica’s apartment

• “The rich get richer and everyone else hopes for scholarships.”

• “The sheriff wants to ask you some questions.”

god I feel so sorry for the people who don’t like Veronica. what sad lives they must lead.

• oh I thought it was a random guy who died but it’s a guy she saw at the bus crash memorial

• I love Keith and Veronica’s relationship. He can tell when something’s wrong, he knows she’s lying when she brushes it off and lies about it, but doesn’t force her to tell him.

• Which can be a good and bad thing in my eyes lol. In this case it’s bad cause I think he should know her name was found on a dead person

• either Kendall is cheating on her husband with multiple people and not just Logan orrr she’s doing some other sketchy stuff

• I know this is probably wrong but why was my first instinct to think this guy was hired as a hitman by Aaron Echolls to kill Veronica?

• the thing is neither Logan or Duncan are in the wrong. Logan is hurt because Duncan wasn’t there for him when he was accused of murder, but Duncan was also reeling from finding out Logan’s dad killed his sister. It’s like they both needed support in different ways and they couldn’t give it to each other.

• yeah Jackie seems to be too much for Wallace. Like I truly can’t remember anything that happened between them, I didnt even remember them dating lol but I don’t like her with him.

• so I’m wondering if Beaver’s gonna want Veronica to expose his dads hotel scene

• no it’s actually crazy how many plot twists they have with making you think who was behind the bus crash or why it happened. to be quite honest with you I do like this theory of it was for Veronica and Aaron hired this guy to do it

• also I really didn’t mean to watch this episode tonight. I know season 1 is considered like the Best, but I’m also really digging season 2. Which apparently a lot of people on Reddit don’t like.

Ok I finished seasons 1-3 & the movie in my Veronica Mars rewatch, and I’ve made a promise to myself that I’m not allowed to rewatch season 4 without rereading both books, so hopefully that will be the necessary deterrent from heartbreak.

But this was a wonderful rewatch. I haven’t revisited the show since season 4 and I’m still mad about it (both the contents of the season AND the way Hulu dropped it. Gonna be mad about those forever), so it felt good to revisit and remember how much love I felt for it for so long. (I remember, when season 1 was airing, confessing to someone that it had surpassed Gilmore Girls as my favorite show, which was a BFD for obsessive little 17yo Elizabeth.)

Season 1 is still a basically perfect season of TV, and the show never reached the highs of “A Trip to the Dentist” again, but there’s a lot that I love in season 2 (OMG SWAY, more screen time for Mac, G-g-g-gia, “Not Pictured”), and even 3 (loml Stosh Piznarski, Dean O’Dell, “Debasement Tapes,” Logan the babysitter). I love the weird cameos from America’s Next Top Model contestants, and all the dirty shit they got away with because UPN didn’t have a functioning standards and practices department, and the ICONIC “CW?”/“It’s a done deal.” moment at the end of season 2, and trying to make sense of the plot of “Donut Run,” and a 36yo Charisma Carpenter playing a 25yo Kendall Casablancas (she was already older than that in SEASON 1 of Buffy!), and SO MANY “before they were stars” guest appearances.

And the movie is flawed (look! I know KBell basically walked out of the delivery room and onto set and she didn’t want to film in San Diego again, but LA does not look like San Diego! Those 2 hours on the 5 make a difference! I feel this way about season 4, too! And if you HAD to film in LA then couldn’t you at least have kept the moody reds and oranges of the stained glass? Where is all the color? Why is that whole movie a cool blue??? And why did Bonnie DeVille have to be Carrie Bishop if they couldn’t get Leighton Meester back??), and too fan servicey at times, but I still love it a lot. (I gave $75 to that kickstarter, which was a lot of money when I was a broke 25yo, and then I flew across the country and met my sister here in LA so we could go to the Paleyfest panel the night before it came out and then see the movie together 3 times in 2 days, so really I put several hundred dollars into the movie.)

And then season 4 also exists, I guess.

Idk. I really love Veronica Mars. Even when I hate Veronica Mars. And most of all I love Veronica. What a complicated, twisty, fascinating, dark mess of a character. What a consistently incredible performance from Kristen Bell. I love her so much.
