'OBRED / RITE' from Poppy Jackson on Vimeo.
Festival Spider Ljubljana 3rd June 2016
40-minute performance
Film by Lesley Ewen
Friday 3 June at 5 pm A one time only event
Poppy Jackson is a renowned actionist artist, investigating themes around the performativity of the body through working with the female body itself as site. Celebrating the body through a rite of passing and transformation, her new piece presents an embodied ritual in action, in conjunction with the local architecture.
Developed from her work Site, which was part of the SPILL Showcase 2015, Rite spans poles of power and vulnerability. In activating public space, it critiques current societal attitudes towards the female body, drawing inspiration from the ancient figure of the Sheela-na-Gig who was previously installed above many church doorways.
'Thank you to Alistair Jackson for being such a wonderful dad, always so supportive and proud. Rest in peace.' - Poppy Jackson

Doctor Who S10E09 – Empress Of Mars
Doctor Who S10E09 – Empress Of Mars

Just wrapped up a project on an upcoming anthology with Red Stylo Press called Cosmic Love. I colored “Green Light”, written by Mario Candelaria, art by Adam Ferris, and letters by Scott Ewen. Good stuff!

I wonder who GAIA is modeled after (in-game I mean, I know she's supposedly modeled after Lesley Ewen).
Did Elisabet use someone from her past as the inspiration for GAIA? Or was GAIA's image just randomly selected? I kinda think it's the former considering how much love and care Lis put into the creation of GAIA. Maybe another ex? Or someone she used to admire like a mentor or another scientist? Heck, maybe it's just how Lis imagined a loving "all-mother" would look like.
I wonder if there is a datapoint about it? 'Cause I don't remember anything like that.

So I started watching Magic in the Water and it’s got just a wonderful cast.
Tumblr media
It stars Mark Harmon and Joshua Jackson.
But there’s also...
Teryl Rothery!
Tom Cavanagh!
Harley Jane Kozak better remembered as Sara O’Neill
Adrien Doval who was in the SG1 episode “Company of Thieves” as Borzin but also did an episode of MacGyver with RDA.
John Procaccino who was in Farewell to Harry with Joe Flanigan
Morris Panych who was in a bunch of X-Files as the Gray Haired Man.
Tamsin Kelsey who was Gairwyn in the SG-1 episodes “Thor’s Hammer” and “Thor’s Chariot”
Lesley Ewen who has not only done SG-1 but also The Witcher, Arrow and The Sentinel. You’d know her if you saw her.
Ben Immanuel (Ben Ratnor) who did a couple of SG-1 episodes - “Morpheus” and “Wormhole X-Treme!”
I mean, it’s a kids/family movie so it’s played a little broad but it was fun and I kept going “Hey! I know that guy from something!”

Naked - Likeable Misanthrope
I've seen this one too many times to count. Have actually rented it on Netflix several time (I guess I need to buy my own copy). Wrote this on facebook on one of my repeat viewings:
Fascinating character study with something new to notice each time I've seen it. Caustic, unnerving, enigmatic and brilliantly acted by David Thewlis.
Thewlis plays Johnny, who we first meet as he is brutally raping someone in a back alley, and then goes on to steal a car and drive to London to drop in on an ex girlfriend. Johnny is a misanthrope, a bitterly funny but rude and unpleasant, tightly wound individual, and we spend most of the movie following him around the night streets of London as he comes into contact with one lost soul after another. There's also a subplot about an even worse individual, who eventually comes into contact with Johnny and his temporary flatmates near the end, but it is Johnny who is major focus of the film. Amazing script, and the performances are all fantastic from top to bottom, and the story behind the creation of the screenplay is almost as interesting as the film itself, as most of the dialog and 'script' are written based off of improvisational workshops with the actors, who in a sense, are creating their own characters during the development of the screenplay.
My favorite films are ones that I can return to again and again, and still find something new to enjoy with each repeated viewing. Sometimes it helps if the film is enigmatic, and hard to pin down, with an ending that makes you scratch your head. This is one of those. Of course, it is also one of those films that I've tried to turn other people on to, but nobody else seems to like it.
5 stars out of 5
Released 1993, First Viewing June 1995, with so many revisits I’ve lost count

Doctor Who: Empress Of Mars (S10E09) Review
Empress Of Mars is comfort zone #DoctorWho at its finest. #Review
Tumblr media
After the promised-much-more-than-it-delivered epic storytelling of the past three weeks, “Doctor Who” comes back down to Earth (well, one planet out) with “Empress Of Mars”, landing firmly in the series’ comfort zone. Visiting NASA on a whim, the Doctor, Bill and Nardole are present to witness the discovery of a message written on the red planet’s surface under the ice caps: ‘God Save The…

Swimming with Style
As your gaze gently sinks into the shimmering abyss of this composition, you notice a flurry of well-coordinated activity as fish flit across the inky black ground, with some moving so rapidly that all you catch is the golden gleam of their scales as they zip along. After a moment of being mesmerized by their dance, you begin to notice slower moving fish drifting along with the current through the tangle of aquatic vegetation. At first glance, it is difficult to determine which design movement inspired this paper but upon further inspection we can see that its composition is set within the popular trend of organic design albeit with a retro twist. Striking the eye first is the paper’s nod to art deco with its metallic details and repeating geometric shapes, but then we come to notice the curves of the fish bodies, small, round bubbles floating up, and the seemingly suspended foliage, which are all indicative motifs of organic design. As design movements, art deco and organic design are often not thought of together, since art deco often focuses on highly stylized, non-natural patterns while organic design is all about nature, so seeing them work together harmoniously in this paper is a treat.
As for more technical details on this wallpaper, it is a sidewall that was screen printed and manufactured in 1954. Besides its glimmering aquatic imagery, its special feature is that it is washable making it perfect as a bathroom paper. In America, washable wallpaper was introduced by the Imperial Paper and Color Corporation in 1934 and perfected by United Wallpaper in 1947. The paper created by United was called “Varlar” and was washable due to its use of vinyl. Previously, so called washable papers were still susceptible to damage but the introduction of vinyl as a material allowed for the papers to be safely scrubbed without risking the integrity of the colors. David Thewlis harika. Louise’nin (Lesley Sharp) saç kesimine bayıldım. İngiliz İngilizcesi dinlemek ve adamın sürekli senin kafanı ütülemesi neden güzel? Aradaki küçük hikayeler de tapılası ama David Thewlis’in oyunculuğu hepsini örtüyor. Trainspotting’den (1996) Ewen Bremner da var.

I'm getting really into Sticky Bombs and Proximity Bombs!
when I'm not going full stealth I tend to rock the Chieftain outfit and there's something I kinda like about coming back to the Nora in a Banuk leader's garb: coming back changed, coming back with a piece of another culture
a walkthrough advised to pick off the Eclipse soldiers at Mother's Watch without drawing the attention of the Corruptors but the Corruptors saw me and came out the gate to smack me and piss off my mount almost immediately
I was surprised by how delighted I was to see Varl again. I was meh on him before (a million years ago!) but "for Aloy" was heartwarming and "how can we help" after Aloy got out of All-Mom was so evocative of Shepard's "what do you need me to do" that I love him now. also I like how he doesn't call Aloy Seeker nor Anointed!
I've read the transcript of the subords escaping but man it was nothing compared to Lesley Ewen's line reads, even with the AI flat tone right up until that last line to Elisabet
I chuckled at Sylens' "what are you talking about? you had two [mothers]: a dead woman and a machine" like yes good point but not the time
adored the "I am not your Anointed" sequence and cooed out loud when Aloy hugged Teersa
I'm really enjoying coming to chat to CYAN as well as Rost's grave after each plot point, I'm glad I did TFW after "Maker's End" as suggested by the lead writer
overriding a Fireclaw and watching it attack the other one was Awesome, I regret forgetting to save a video

好開我們團隊獲得了溫哥華劇場獎的最佳製作獎!So grateful that we won The Jessies Award for Outstanding Production, big congrats to the whole Camera Obscura (hungry ghosts) team. The whole production team really was a high calibre dream team. Big credits goes to Lesley Ewen, the director and writer of the work. So much of the design idea really comes from her, she’s a director who knows exactly what she wants, so clearly planned out in her head for the last 17 years, finally it’s paying off. Paul Wong, the pioneer of media arts in Vancouver, this story is about you, and for me to do the media design in the work is such a nerve-wracking honour :) Thank you Fay Nass for inviting me to this production and all the trust you gave me. Thank you to the lovely video design assistants Kanon Hewitt & Kimia Koochakzadeh (intern for Chimerik 似不像 for 2018 Summer) who helped me thru the production and operation.  Khan Lee’s amazing set design made the projection possible, without this beautiful set the video wouldn’t even look half as great. Jeff Harrison who I will say this again, as a TD who allows me to just send the rider and feeling at ease to just walk in the space and the tech is ready to go. Finally big congrats to the rest of the team, y’all all helped us to complete this amazing picture and this production as a whole, every little thing counts. It was such a meaningful project (especially with all the subject matter on queer and racism)  and we all worked so hard on it. Again, imagine a story written 17 years ago about a queer Asian pioneer in the media arts in the 70s/80s vancouver that deals with mental health and questions on colonization and social justice. And yes, once again, we gotta keep challenging the status quo, keep telling stories that needs to be heard. #jessies2019 #theatre #award #vancouver #cameraobscura #play #production @fay.nass @thefranktheatre @ms.lesley.e @paulwongprojects @khankills @queerarts @kimiakoochakzadeh @kanonhewitt (at Bard on the Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0AOX1qhmCJ/?igshid=166qu8mvo8wap
