Louise Despont
What is the source of inspiration? Filmed in her Tribeca studio, Louise Despont peruses a vast reference library of images she began collecting in high school and maintains to this day. Drawn to geometry, energy waves, and universal symbols, Despont’s interests reveal a fascination with underlying patterns and cosmological draughtsmen: Rudolf Steiner, Carl Jung, Agnes Martin, Charles Burchfield, Martin Ramirez, Achilles G. Rizzoli, Adolf Wölfli, Hilma af Klint, Theosophy, Buddhist medical charts, Shaker gift drawings, seismographs, echolocation, mandalas, yantras, Tantric drawings, maps, gardens, fasciation in plants, beehives, kilim, ikat, Jantar Mantar, and masks.
“What’s so interesting about the creative act is that you can access something completely outside yourself,” says Despont, who makes a distinction between consciously referencing subject matter in her artwork versus communing with a sense of unconscious awareness. “If you offer yourself up as the hands to make the work the relationship you form with what you communicate with has its own voice.”

When I have to take the final step of taking the drawing to the framer, I take a last look at it because I know it's the last time to make changes. And when I look at the drawing, I can see areas that aren't fully connected or fully resolved. And those are all openings to add something. And then when it's done, it's like, "Don't touch me!" Like there's no entry point anymore. And that always feels very clear.
Louise Despont, on knowing when it's done

RESEARCH PAPER
Who is Louise Despont
Who is Louise Despont? That is the question that this essay will answer. To start I will explain Louise’s life, what influences her art, and materials she uses. Then I will explain her key art works and what drew me to her work. Overall I will be explaining the question who is Louise Despont.
Starting at the beginning Louise Despont was born in 1983 in New York. She grew up in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan and studied at Brown University. After college she studied in India on a Fulbright fellowship that she was awarded from her university. While studying in India she gained inspiration that began to influence her art. The culture’s ritual symbol of the universe, which is the mandala, heavily influenced her works and can be found within them. As of 2018 Louise Despont lives in Bali where she loves the county’s cultures and traditions. Although she resides in Bali she still works between there and New York. Continuing on she had many other influences. Throughout Despont’s work you can see geometry, energy waves, and other universal symbols. In an interview with “The Drawing Center'' Louise states that “I work with colored pencils, graphite, architectural stencils, French curves, compasses, and rulers on the pages of the ledger book.” She also mentions using white ink and gold or copper leaf. The usage of stencils heavily influence her work and Louise believes that they help her go deeper into her work. Throughout her work you can see how she plays with layering and mixing different materials. While working on her pieces Despont states that “The mark does not come from a physical or emotional impulse. There is a period of time between each change that takes place on the page, and this allows space for contemplation.” (interview with The Drawing Center) To summarize, Louis Despont has been influenced by her surroundings and enjoys mixing materials to create her geometric pieces of art.
When Louise Despont’s work was instantly intrigued by her work. She has many famous pieces that have been in several shows but I will just name a few. Her works include the “Jester with Crow”, “Bathing Consetllation, Dusk”, “Bowed Vibration”, “The Feast”, and many more. It is hard for me to pick a favorite work because I find each of them intriguing and eye-catching. When I am looking at her work my eyes are constantly wandering and finding new things to see. I find it amazing how Louise created these intricate geometric works of art. I also like to see how she used different mediums to create layers and dimensions. I'm not sure if I am allowed to mention this within this essay but her work reminds me of the artist Emerson Barret and drummer from the band Palaye Royale. Although their works are very different, the geometric and intricate shape caused me to think of each artist. I enjoy looking at works that make me think “well how did the artist accomplish this”. I like how her works are left up to interpretation in ways. We may each see different things even if we are looking at the same piece. We are each able to see different small details. Overall I was amazed by Louise Despont’s works.
To summarize, I enjoyed learning about Louise Despont’s work in class. Her art caught my eye and caused me to want to look more into her work. I was intrigued to learn how she was influenced by her surroundings as well as things that mean something to her. I also find it intriguing to see how she mixes materials to create depth and layers within her pieces. In short her geometric pieces create eye-catching works that amazed me.

These images seem useful for the patterning and arrangement of pieces. It makes me think of a sun dial :) And the precision she takes to draw each line is incredible.
