Been reading Ciconia When They Cry on some free times and I finally got to the introduction of Meow and the more explicit discussions about multiple personalities and gender identity and this is all just so sweet

Like, the year this is set in is 2081(??my memory ain't great) but there are still scars of bad portrayal of marginalized groups in media, and what is great about this conversation is that it actively, explicitly, criticizes those portrayals, and actually shows what harm they can do. If Jayden wasn't a cool person who's open about his mistakes, he would just laugh at Miyao and Meow's face and never acknowledge that it was a shitty thing to do, but since he's cool he constantly apologizes for anything that might have unintentionally hurt Meow, and actively seeks to understand her well so he can treat her with the respect he would have for any other human being.

And another thing that I really like on this scene is that, the root of Jayden's embarrassment with his attraction to Meow isn't just because of her gender but also because..like until a few moments ago that was his bro..with whom he had some kinda romantic moments with but didn't know why until now, and after some talking he realizes that all those moments were Meow talking, that his attraction was to Meow the whole time even though it was the same body, and I guess that's even more considerate of him to make this distinction because if it was any other way he would probably end up hurting both Miyao and Meow by not acknowledging them as different individuals to an extent, which he doesn't, he acknowledges they're not the same person

He's trying his best and actually being really nice, it's a lot to process and the whole conversation and the atmosphere it's just very sweet and friendly, I'm really glad Ryukishi is being even more open about these themes in his stories

Jayden once again lumping both Miyao and Meow into the same role of partner. Bro scored the biggest bag, he better not fumble.

But also I'm thinking of how quickly Jayden falls for Meow. There was clearly some affection between him and Miyao, but because he's a dumbass, Jayden probably didn't want to acknowledge his love for another guy. Now that he knows Meow exists, has always been there, and is a girl, he starts pouring all his affection onto her. Now that he's given the option of entering a "normal" heterosexual romance, he takes it.

Really interesting themes with our two main characters being presented. Miyao has difficulty with his gender presentation while Jayden has trouble with his sexual orientation, and both try to take the easy way out or make excuses for their feelings. Miyao says he keeps his body small for Meow even though she doesn't care, and Jayden allows himself to be in love with Meow cause she's a girl even though he also has feelings for Miyao.
