It’s generally collecting experiences, inspirations, stuff you like in other people’s art, and trying different mediums and techniques as long as you’re satisfied with the process and art. But also, it’s learning fundamentals. I’m going to devote June to anatomy because I seriously need to improve in this area, I prepare for intense study sessions :/ It’s a neverending process so good luck :)

Asks (running on air)

Answering a couple of asks I’ve had about the process of writing Running on Air (thank you @screeching-moonstudent and @fadedseasidepoetry).

I don’t ever deliberately plan or organise a story, which might sound a little messy but honestly I don’t think it’s necessary (to answer the unasked question: yes, my English teachers all hated me and I didn’t like them either lol). I’ve never liked storyboarding, story outlines, character profiles, and all the rest of it. I regard that entire business as well-disguised procrastination. Not an attack on anyone who does do it, by the way, because if you find it fun and enjoy doing it — then I fully support that!

Anyway, once I’ve got an idea for a fic, I pick a scene I can envisage — doesn’t matter which one — and write it. Then I’ll write another big scene. Then another. Whichever scenes I want, regardless of order. So with Running on Air, one of the first scenes I wrote was Harry looking at Draco’s silhouette as he watches the sunrise. The canola fields was another one. The Snowdonia lake was a third. @fadedseasidepoetry, I think this helps build atmosphere — if I’ve already got future scenes, I know exactly how much tension I need to write into preceding scenes. Once I have a string of scenes, I write the epilogue.

The prologue I write last. Prologues always need to be a little bit clever and give the readers some tasty foreshadowing, so there’s no point writing it until I know the ending. “Running on Air” opened with Harry standing around in his Auror robes, bored and uncomfortable in the summer heat — and in the final chapters, he once again is standing around in his Auror robes, bored and uncomfortable in the summer heat. So the prologue is adding to the whole theme of circles, and beginnings/endings.

Once I’ve done that, I go through and stitch the fic together with “filler scenes” that link Event A to Event B and so on. And then it’s done! Then it spends forever in editing hell because I’m a perfectionist who needs to learn how to let go.

@hogwartsfirebolt I wrote Running on Air by taking inspiration from familiar experiences and memories and emotions and places, so none of it was really a huge shift for me. I was just organising the thoughts in my head. I admire the writers who manage to make the entire business a romantic and wretched production of frantic typing and existential crises, but for me I’m generally having a cup of disappointingly lukewarm tea and wondering if the dialogue’s too cheesy. But I can appreciate that it’s a very unique and new experience for readers! I think writers and readers have very different experiences of a story, which is fine. My job is to paint the scenery, prompt the actors, and make sure the audience is so immersed they never pause to think about the work going on backstage.
