Back to editing/re-writes of Memento Mori to try to get back into writing. Still not happy with this scene, so it'll probably end up on the cutting room floor!

“Violence is the only thing he understands,” tears welled in my eyes. “I’d do anything to get Kyrie back. Pay any price!” “Not this,” she gently pulled me away from his body, the heart monitor screaming as Victor flatlined. His outline was blurry, his spirit almost within my grasp. “We’ll get her back.” Reluctantly, I released the sliver of life, and the monitor stopped its alarm, the white line returning to its peaks and troughs.  “You’ve betrayed your masters,” I let out a trembling breath, and Zariah squeezed my shoulder. “They’ll know what you’ve done. I thought you were no longer a threat because you were in a hospital bed, but you’re just as dangerous as ever.” He attempted to smile again, but he was too weak.   “I’ll report back to Eagle Command about his involvement in all of this,” Zariah dropped her hand off me, and I noticed that she slipped the knife back into her sleeve. She was also willing to go what was needed, and would have cut my throat if I’d not backed down. Some things never change.  “I will always be a threat to you,” the machine spoke his words without inflection. That made what he said next even more terrifying. “Remember that, when the Gates open and I take my rightful place, holding your leash.” “Threats from the man who’s chained to his bed by a catheter and a life support system,” Zariah pulled a face in disgust. “You’re all farts, and no shit, Victor.”

RULE ONE/OOC INFORMATION Hi, my name is Kel, I'm over 21+ and use the pronouns she/her. Time zone is GMT.For now, my blog will run on a queue as I'm busy with some real life stuff. But sometimes, I may come online for an hour or two, depending on my mood. Blog is selective, private and mutual only. Also OC, multi fandom and multi-muse friendly too.

 RULE TWO/THREADS AND REPLIES  Replies can take a while to reply to, but I am not ignoring anyone. Please message if I haven't replied within a month.The best way to begin threads are through sending ask memes. I will also post open starters and maybe the occasional starter call. Not really a plotting person either; prefer to go with the flow.

RULE THREE/TRIGGERS I don't really have any triggers. That being said I will tag other people's triggers the best I can, and if I don't feel free to send a message and let me know. Don't send anon hate either. We all make mistakes and can't remember everything. Regarding shipping, I'm open to anything really. That being said, don't force any ships on any of my characters. I'll just unfollow/block if it continues to happen.

RULE FOUR/ETIQUETTE I do not tolerate any forms of hate. Racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia and any other forms of hate are not tolerated on this blog and I don't want to see any of it on the dash. It's an immediate hard block if I see anything. Respect each other, it's not that hard.

Please enjoy some out of context Morgana Dodds. I've taken these out of the first three books of Memento Mori, and I hope they kind of show her character arc, even if just a little :

"I’ve done more than anyone else has,” I felt my hackles rise in defence of myself. “I’m not a police officer. This isn’t even my job!”

 “I just want to be left alone, and get on with my life. Like a normal person.” 

“I was hardly a superhero.”

“Sorry, I was held up with something,” I opened the door, and let her in. “Tea?” 

“How long was I gone?”

“I’m sorry,” who I was apologising to, I wasn’t sure.

“It’s my specialty,” I hugged my knees to my chest, self-conscious of the hole in my bloodied shirt. “Was anyone else hurt?”

“I’m fine. But I appreciate you checking in on me, and I might take you up on your offer.” 

“I step aside. Normally, I go to the Beyond and just hang out there until I need my body back, or you leave. But this time, I’m going to try to stay here.”

“You made one tactical error,” I spat blood from my mouth, revelling in the metallic taste on my tongue. [...]“You fucked with my family,” I wrapped my hand around his wrist, and gripped his soul.

“I guess I don’t have much of a choice then, do I?”

“Go ahead,” I nodded to her. “Have some fun. I’ll clear up here, and have an early night. The last night out I had in Albuquerque didn’t end so well!”

“You know, in the olden days, like centuries ago, I think, going all the way back to the Egyptians maybe...but anyway, ancient peoples believed that a person’s essence was kept in their hair and nails. So to have someone’s essence, is to have power over them.” [...]“Maybe there were more like me, back in those times. So, people were careful with their hair and nails, and teeth too. They knew the power you could have over someone, if you held their essence. For example, you can summon the dead back from their graves. Make sure they never find peace.”

“When Gregarov screams and begs for forgiveness, it’s not the universe that he’s speaking to, or God. It’s the women that you’ve forgotten...the nameless, disposable ‘bitches’...that have an entire afterlife to spend repaying the torment he gave to them in life.”[...]“I can’t do anything to you in the world of the living, but no one lives forever, Antoli. You’ll have to enter my realm at some point. And I’ll be waiting, along with all the faceless, nameless, disposable ‘cunts’ that you threw in the canal, in the garbage, just used up and discarded when you didn’t want them anymore.”

I've been working on the re-writes of Memento Mori part IV because each time I go back to it, I'm still not happy with how it's turning out. Meh.

Anywho, snips below the cut:

Wonder:

“I can’t help but wonder,” I turned slowly in my chair to look at Sherilyn squarely in the face. If I could stand my ground against Caleb and win, the queen of the PTA was nothing to me.

Stop:

“Deputy Ward’s an adult. He wants to climb down into the pit with the werewolf, I’m not going to stop him.”

Cope:

I bundled his clothes into a biohazard bag, and left it at the base of the table; I’d throw it into the incinerator once I was done. It was unlikely to be able to cope with burning human remains, but I could at least get rid of the clothes and any trace evidence that might be attached to it.

Attempt:

The last time I’d been on the top floor of the building, I had been dismissed over the Forbes incident on the Invesiture’s attempt to monetize me. I felt as if I was stepping into forbidden territory as I pushed open the mahogany double doors to Dr Carnegie’s office.

I'm trying to polish off Memento Mori with the aim of doing something with it (having sent myself an arbitrary goal of putting it on WattPad if I get x numbers of followers in an attempt to motivate myself to actually edit!). So here's Part I badly summarized:

Continuing into hell to edit and after I made this post about Nora, I wanted to focus on her some more!

“Holy shit! Bitch! I was beginning to get worried!” A hoarse voice yelled at me down the phone. “I know you said not to panic until a week had passed, but, girl, when I saw you go off with that guy and the state you were in...shit! Are you okay?”

“Where are you? I’m coming to you. This is going to be such a scoop! Jared is going to shit himself when he finds out!”

“A scoop! A first for Nora Ling! I can almost feel the Pulitzer in my hands! How do I look?”

“With me, is Deputy, uh, Deputy Ward of the Sheriff’s Office,” Nora quickly recovered. In her eagerness to land her scoop, she’d not gotten Ted’s name, so had to quickly squint at his name badge. “Deputy, can you confirm the rumours that you’ve found Amy?”

“But when I ran the plates a couple of days later, it wasn’t a cab. The car had been reported as stolen from a local resident in Luna,” Nora came up and slung an arm around my shoulder. “But the plates didn’t match the car listed on the DMV. So, chop shop, right? I went to the police in Albuquerque, but got poo-pooed. They wouldn’t even take a witness statement from me. So, I went to my boss at the paper, and he basically told me to go and take some photos at the dog fair.”

“Fuck!” Nora had finished her call. “Fuck! Fucking Courtnee Fucking St. Claire-James. Fuck. That fuck-face Jared, has taken the story, that I broke, from me, and is sending in Courtnee St.Claire-James to take over. Because she has ‘better screen quality and gravitas’. Fuck!” 

“I can dream. Just a ‘Nora Ling who broke the story’, you know? My scoop! My five minutes of fame, and introduction to investigative journalism. But Jared just erased me with a wave of his hand, and now Courtnee St. Claire-James is getting all the credit. Ugh!” 

“We’ll be there,” Nora had turned her attention back to the conversation. “Courtnee just posted that she can’t get anyone to comment from the Sheriff’s Department. I can’t imagine her face when I waltz in and get a quote from Sheriff Harris himself,” she smiled slyly, and also helped herself to one of my pancakes, having polished off her own. 

Nora watched him leave, and closed her laptop when she saw one of the photojournalist’s staring at her. She gave him the stink eye. “Yeah, that’s right buddy. The scoop was mine!” [...]“It’s a dog eat dog world in journalism. If you think none of them would push me into oncoming traffic for a chance to get inside the Sheriff’s Office, then you’re more naive than I thought.” 

“You know, she’s only the face of the Independent Chronicle’s social media department because her dad owns the paper, and paid for her boob job.”[...]“Of course! I’d kill to have those connections, and I’d rinse the hell out of them. Do you know how far ahead of my career I’d be if my dad owned a newspaper, or news channel? Why? Why did Ju-Long Ling have to be a dentist?!”

“Holy fucking shit!” Nora sounded as if she was screaming. “Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! I have so much to tell you, but first; I need the deets. Tell me everything. Fill me in. I have five million followers who need to know!”

“I’ve...uh...I’ve stolen a copy of the letter. It was just lying out. I took a quick snap when the forensics guy put it down to fill in paperwork. Does that count as interfering with a crime scene?” 

“Yeah, yeah,” Nora waved me away. “I’ve got releases for them. I’m not a monster. I have ethics, y’know.”

(On meeting Avery) “You know who I am!” Nora looked like she might  faint with happiness. “I was at one of your parties that you threw at Samson’s in twenty-eighteen. It was the best night of my life”

“I’m never drinking again,” she croaked. “Why are all the phones ringing at once?”[...]“I don’t understand how they are still upright,” Nora groaned. “Words in my head are too loud. I’m going to be silent forever.” [...]“Some booze,” Nora looked green. “You were behind the bar, pouring cups of tequila into the basin.”

For NaNo, I re-wrote parts of Memento Mori because I wasn't happy with the final arc, so deleted about 90% of Part IV and just started again. I then hit word count, and stopped, even though the WIP currently isn't finished.

Anyway, I wrote this, closed Google Docs, and went to have a nap!

OC Description Tag Game

I'm really bad for not describing my characters; an over-correction of my previous bad habit of over-describing. Your minds can fill in the blanks of what people look like, right?!

Anywho, please accept my humble offering of Morgana's description of Ted:

“I’m sorry, hun. We only take cash,” she sounded as if she was in a daze.  “Don’t worry, Barb,” a ten dollar note slid across the counter. “This one's on me. Are you alright, ma’am?”  “I’ve had better days,” I put my bank card away, feeling an embarrassed blush take over my body. I looked at the man who leaned against the counter next to me. He gave me a warm smile, his brown eyes crinkling from underneath his stetson.  The first thing that caught my attention, other than his eyes, was the moustache that inhabited his face. It was neatly trimmed and gave him a look of Ned Flanders. His plaid shirt was tucked into his dusty jeans, the sleeves rolled up showing his forearms. There was a tan line from where a watch would have been.  “Could I get a refill as well, please, Barb?” He pushed a white coffee cup towards her, and she filled his mug on autopilot. “That’s quite the accent, there. Where are you from?”  “I’m from Scotland,” I gratefully took the cup that Barb handed me, and took a sip. It was coffee, and I tried not to grimace. I poured in several packets of sugar just to take away the bitter taste, as the man watched on.

Taking snippets from Memento Mori that fit the brief, and are below the cut:

Is about Light:

The light was blinding as I managed to clear the last of the dirt from my eyes. The red sand had filled my mouth, and it took me several minutes to cough it all up. My mouth was parched, and the blistering sun overhead didn’t help.  Managing to stand, I took in the shallow grave that I had been buried in, the rock outcrop nearby, and the expanse of desert that rolled on for miles.

Shows self-doubt:

I sat on the bed, and held my face in my hands.  Taking deep breaths, I tried to force down the panic that threatened to overwhelm me. I gulped in air as my ribs felt like they were trying to squeeze my lungs out of my chest.  “You’re okay. You’re going to be okay. Everything is fine. You’re going to be okay,” I repeated to myself, gripping the edge of the bed, and rocking back and forth. “You’re safe. Everything is okay. Get it together.”  Gradually, the panic subsided. I was able to breathe again, and I wiped the tears away from my cheeks. Ideally, I would have splashed some water on my face, but that was an amenity I was missing. I could tell that my face was puffy and blotchy, so the thought of walking out to the shower block again, with the risk of bumping into the soldiers who would instantly know that I had been crying, kept me where I was.  It had been a long time since I had last had a panic attack.

Mentions a sense other than sight:

“How did you get in here?” Rolling over, I saw that the bedroom door had been nudged open. “You sneaky little…” I buried my head in his fur, smelling the outside world from him. I could hear Ted moving about downstairs, and the smell of cinnamon tempted me out of bed.  Arty saw his opportunity, and moved into the warm space that I had just vacated.  “Would you steal my grave just as quickly?” I scratched the top of his head, and he curled himself further into the pillows. “Cheeky wee sod.”

Shows Tension:

Sarah was waiting for me when I got home. I had just pulled my house keys out of my pocket when she stormed over to me, slamming her car door behind her. I turned at the noise, and her slap stung my face.  “How could you?!” She was right in my face; spittle from her mouth landing on my face.  “What do you mean?”  “You told her what happened to Kyrie,” Sarah’s finger was shoved in my face.  “I swear I didn’t tell her,” I held up my hands in supplication. “She already knew. I promise you, I never said anything.”  “I hate you so much,” Sarah’s fury cooled, and she hissed at me through clenched teeth. “Rajan has a child protection hearing tomorrow, and my solicitor says I might not get custody of her now. Fuck you, Morgana! I wish you would just die and stay dead!” 

Shows Sadness:

I could only stand, knee-deep in the water, staring, my hands limp by my side, as Sarah cradled Kyrie’s head in her lap. She brushed her hair from her face, smoothing her long dark curls.  “Baby,” she whimpered. “Baby, it’s mummy. You’re okay now. I’m here. You’re alright. Everything is going to be alright! Come on, sweetie. Time to wake up. We’re going home now. You’re okay. I’m here. We all came for you. Everything is going to be alright. Kyrie?” Sarah blinked up at me, tears threatening to overflow from her wide-eyes. “She just needs a minute. She’ll be fine once the drugs wear off?” “Sar,” Pete spoke gently, reaching out to our sister. “No!” She snarled, the tears falling. “Morgana’s here. She’s done it before, and she can do it again.” Her eyes locked onto mine; her face was splattered with someone else’s blood, and her long hair was dishevelled, coming out of her ponytail. She must have taken a punch, as her lip was burst, and starting to swell. She had taken a beating just to rescue her daughter, and we had failed.  I had failed.

He pulled me to sit on his lap, wrapping his arms around me. “What’s Alice doing here? And why are you lying to me?”

Excited:

My phone buzzed silently in my pocket. I wandered back up the stairs to my vantage spot at the back of the auditorium, and checked my notifications.  >Kyrie: Ready to watch the live-stream. Can’t wait to see Uncle Teddy and hear about what really happened! Mum let me pre-order Nora’s book! Soooo excited!!!<

Eye:

Rosalie Ward, Ted’s adoptive mother, was an expanse of love; it just radiated out of her. Her face creased with laugh lines, and her hazel eyes twinkled with warmth. Her hair was dyed auburn with copper highlights, and piled onto her head in a beehive. She was the epitome of a Southern Belle. 

Cold:

“We find Kyrie,” Sarah, a sudden cold-calm descending upon her, stood up, shaking off Avery’s comforting hold. “We find the motherfuckers who have taken my daughter, and we burn them to the ground.”  “Like Detroit?” Avery grinned wickedly.
