My Recent Interview with The Argotist of Liverpool, UK
The following interview was published here in The Argotist of Liverpool, England on January 20th (2022) and is reprinted with kind permission
Q: Do you think of your lyrics as poetry?
A: Yes, of course. Some of the poetry I write is very much in the style of freehand, so those can be difficult to apply to music, but it has been done. Other times the format of the piece will lend itself to music because of the rhyme and the metre of it. And other times still, I have written lyrics that I have passed along to other artists, who have set them to music, the way Bernie Taupin specifically wrote lyrics for Elton John. (These days I tend to co-write songs, supplying lyrics only.) A song is simply the marriage of poetry and music and I don’t see a hard line between the two disciplines. I tend to think of songs as “valued added poems.” I also tell friends that most of my favourite poets have guitars, people like Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker and Tom Waits. They are great poets whose works can stand alone, without the music, but why not add it if you have that gift? Why watch black and white when you have a colour TV?
Q: Do you think it is important that songs rhyme and if so why?
A: One of the first poets I read as a child was British-Canadian Robert W. Service, who had an incredible way with rhyme, and there is something very satisfying about hearing those rhymes. I wonder if we are not hardwired that way, if we did not evolve to appreciate rhyme, as it would have been an excellent way for ancient peoples to accurately pass down stories and vital information accurately. A Canadian folklorist named Marius Barbeau recorded funeral dirges by the tribes of the Nass River in northern British Columbia in the 1960s, and then played them for one Professor Kiang Kang-hu, an expert in ancient Chinese cultures at McGill University in Montreal. Without telling the scholar anything about the nature of what he was about to hear, Barbeau played the first song. Professor Kiang indicated that it was quite similar to a Buddhist funeral chant used by nomads in Mongolia. The second song played had been collected from the Eagle Clan of the Kitwanga tribe, who had participated in the most recent wave of migration from the north, and originally from across the Bering Strait. This time, Kiang advised Barbeau that the song was very similar to one sung by poll bearers in modern day Peking. Those songs had survived in the oral tradition for millennia and despite trans-continental migration to the point where the modern Canadian aboriginal people singing them no longer understood the words as the language had evolved. The professor, however, did know the dialect. So appreciation for rhyme may have been an important evolutionary advantage. There must be a reason that human beings find rhyme so deeply satisfying. Virtually all the traditional folk songs that have survived from the British Isles rhyme.
However, a great songwriter need to rely on it. I would point you to Paul Simon’s “America” as a truly great song, and one which does not employ rhyme, something I had not noticed until it was pointed out to me. If the songwriter is skilled enough you won’t even notice if the lines don’t rhyme. Some of my poems are in a grey area, because they are set to music, but they don’t rhyme and are not sung.
Q: Do you think song lyrics must conform to recognised song structures such as clear rhyming schemes, choruses, refrains, hooks and bridges or that songs can also be like free verse?
A: I do believe that those conventions are very useful in crafting a song that will be catchy and memorable and that they are perfectly respectable tools, but also that great songs can be written with out them. Blake said, “'Improvement makes strait roads, but the crooked roads without Improvement, are roads of Genius,” and I could not agree more. I have written poems that have been set to music, where the verses are done in freehand, without specific metre or rhyme, but the choruses are the opposite. I think writing that way creates an anticipation for the measured, rhymed choruses, and that after listening to freehand, they are very satisfying. Other than when I set out specifically to write song lyrics, I have no idea, when I set pencil to paper, what the style of the poem will be. I just kind of follow my nose and let the muse lead me where she will. I don’t believe in the rules of poetry, nor did I did not become a poet to follow rules. The ultimate aim of a poem should be a direct hit to the heart, creating an emotional response in the reader. Everything else is just window dressing.
Q: When you read poetry in school or elsewhere did you recognize any connection to the music you enjoyed?
A: I never really thought about it, but I suppose I would have recognized on some level that poetry and song lyrics were first cousins.
Q: Was there anything about poetry in books that influenced your songwriting?
A: Absolutely. William Blake taught me how to see the world in a vision, as opposed to as a photograph. His words soar above the fray and the mundane with majesty and an almost religious fervor. Robert W. Service, a poet of an entirely different nature, taught me how satisfying word play and rhyme can be. I am thinking in particular of The Shooting of Dan McGrew and The Cremation of Sam McGee. He had a mastery not unlike Dr. Suess, whose rhymes are spectacularly catchy and playful. Perhaps the greatest and most influential poetry I have ever read has been the King James Version of the Bible. My very favourite poem is King Solomon’s Song of Songs. The imagery, the metaphors, the raw sexuality, set into a sacred text, are breathtaking. The same goes for the Nativity in the Gospel of Luke, and the opening lines of the Gospel of John, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” And then later, in John 1:5, “And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” And then finally in John 1:14, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” These words are so powerful, so authoritative and so beautifully written, you cannot but wonder if their origin is not divine. The Book of Psalms, Proverbs, the story of Isaac, the Bible bursts with poetry worthy of the greatest writers.
Q: Why do you think songs are more popular with people than poetry is?
A: As I mentioned earlier, I tend to think of songs as value-added poetry. Music is a whole other thing unto itself, a series of notes arranged according to mathematical formulas that for reasons too complex to go into here, we find most beautiful, and also very emotionally evocative. So when you marry lyrics to a beautiful air that complements the feeling and the subject of the poetry, the result is much more powerful, and it is also easier to remember, because we have an incredible memory for melody and for songs. Think about it. How many poems can you recite right through from memory? Now, how many songs could you sing straight through from memory? Music provides an emotional context and enhancement for lyrics, so that we feel the words more profoundly, we enjoy them more because they are surrounded by the music, and they are much easier to recall.

After a good night's sleep in the pilgrimage room of the Capuchin monastery, various errands were on the agenda before I left Austria. I also had to find breakfast. That was the most difficult part.
The center of Feldkirch is very nice, with many nice alleys and Schanigärten (sidewalk cafés). Today was also the weekly market. After asking in about 10 places if they could make me an egg dish (scrambled eggs), I ended up at the Interspar again. There I finally got a breakfast without cereals and sugar. Too bad I couldn't enjoy it in one of the Schanigärten.
***
For today I have deliberately planned a shorter leg, after I went yesterday once again an unplanned 30 km. In the villages before Feldkirch was no bed to be found. But that became clear to me only around 3 pm and so I had to step up a gear to achieve the remaining 10 km until the evening. In exchange, I was able to take my time this morning.
***
The path was fairly uncomplicated and ran largely along the Ill River until it flowed into the Rhine. Since it was almost 30 degrees today, it was again a "shade hunter day". How good that the shadows at the dam were relatively frequent. Unfortunately, all the benches were in the sun and so I took my break on a tree stump. Shortly thereafter, the opportunity arose to put my feet in the cooling water when I came to a small tributary of the Ill. However, the water was so cold that I lost the desire to swim. But it was a relaxing pleasure break.
Wenige Kilometer danach erwartete mich mein Quartier.
***
Soon after the confluence of the Ill and Rhine rivers came the bridge that took me into Switzerland. A few kilometers after that, my lodgings awaited me.
***
I had deliberately chosen this here, because the next part of the path is again very steep. I prefer to master such climbs in the morning than in the afternoon.

Laurel Ridge State Park - Wikipedia
Laurel Ridge State Park is a 13,625-acre (5,514 ha) Pennsylvania state park that passes through Cambria, Fayette, Somerset, and Westmoreland counties, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park is home to the 70-mile (110 km) Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail that runs through the park from the Youghiogheny River at Ohiopyle to the Conemaugh Gorge near Johnstown. The park was approved by the governor on July 10, 1967, and construction started on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail on July 7, 1970.
Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail
Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail is 70 miles (110 km) long, begins at Ohiopyle State Park and ends at Conemaugh Gorge near Johnstown. The trail goes through state forests, state parks, state game lands, and some privately owned lands. Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail is open year round. The trail is marked with yellow blazes. Connector trails are marked with blue blazes. These trails connect the main trail with parking and shelter areas. The trail is marked with large wooden signs at every major highway crossing. Six parking lots at the highway crossings provide starting points; some have access to drinking water.[1]
Shelter areas
There are eight overnight shelter areas on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. These shelter areas are located about every 6 miles (9.7 km) to 10 miles (16 km) along the trail. The shelter areas each have five Adirondack style shelters. There are two outhouses at the rest stops and a water supply. There is room for up to 30 tents at each stop. Firewood is provided. Hikers using the shelters are required to make reservations for use of the shelters with the park staff before setting out on their hike. A fee is charged to users of the shelters.[1]
The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail mileage starts from the southern trailhead in Ohiopyle State Park. The trail runs east through the park and parallel to the Youghiogheny River within Stewart Township in Fayette County for the first 6 miles (9.7 km).[2] Just past mile 6 the trail comes to the first overnight shelter area (with non-potable water), where it turns northeast.[3] At 7 miles (11 km) the trail leaves the park and Fayette County, and enters Lower Turkeyfoot Township in Somerset County and Pennsylvania State Game Lands No. 111.[4] Just before 15 miles (24 km), the trail enters Laurel Ridge State Park for the first time, where it continues northeast. Just past 17 miles (27 km) the trail turns north, and crosses back into Fayette County (now Springfield Township), where the second overnight shelter with potable water is found.[2][3]
The trail runs generally northeast and passes the Laurel Ridge State Park office near 19 miles (31 km), enters Saltlick Township, Fayette County at about 23 miles (37 km), then leaves the park and enters Forbes State Forest just before 24 miles (39 km).[2] Shortly after this the trail returns to Somerset County (Middlecreek Township) and passes the third overnight shelter area with potable water. Between 25 miles (40 km) and 26 miles (42 km) the trail follows the border between Laurel Ridge State Park and Forber State Forest, then leaves public land for private property. It crosses the borough of Seven Springs and runs just west of Seven Springs Mountain Resort and Laurel Hill State Park.[4] Just before 29 miles (47 km) the trail crosses into Donegal Township in Westmoreland County, and shortly after enters the state forest and then Laurel Ridge State Park again.[5] At about 31.5 miles (50.7 km), the trail crosses back into Somerset County (Jefferson Township), and just past 32 miles (51 km) passes the fourth overnight shelter area, with potable water. It runs west of Kooser State Park and continues for several miles just east of the county line, crossing the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 70/76) before 37 miles (60 km). The pedestrian bridge over the turnpike was closed in December 2009, when it was deemed to be in such poor condition that it was too unstable to use.[6] The bridge was reopened in January 2012.[7][8] This stretch of trail runs through the state forest and three separate small tracts of Laurel Ridge State Park.[3][4]
At 38 miles (61 km), the trail crosses from the state forest into Laurel Ridge State Park and Lincoln Township in Somerset County, then crosses briefly into Cook Township in Westmoreland County.[4][5][9] It crosses back into Somerset County and comes to the fifth overnight shelter with potable water, then reaches Laurel Summit State Park at 39 miles (63 km). Continuing through the state forest, the trail crosses into Jenner Township in Somerset County just past 41 miles (66 km), and back into Laurel Ridge State Park at 43.5 miles (70.0 km), passing east of Linn Run and Laurel Mountain state parks along this section. The trail crosses U.S. Route 30 just before 46 miles (74 km) and reaches the sixth overnight shelter with potable water just after. It continues through the state park to 50 miles (80 km), then enters State Game Lands No. 42, then crosses into Ligonier Township in Westmoreland County.[5] The trail leaves the Game Lands at 53 miles (85 km), travels through Laurel Ridge State Park for 1 mile (1.6 km), crosses back into the Game Lands, and into Jenner Township in Somerset County again. Just before 55 miles (89 km) the trail again passes through the state park where it enters Conemaugh Township in Somerset County, then enters private land at about 55.5 miles (89.3 km). The trail enters another tract of the state park before 57 miles (92 km), where it crosses Pennsylvania Route 271 and the seventh overnight shelter with potable water is located. Just after this the trail enters State Game Lands No. 42, then at 57.5 miles (92.5 km) crosses into Upper Yoder Township in Cambria County.[9][10]
A shelter along the trail.
The trail continues through State Game Lands No. 42 and crosses back into Westmoreland County (Fairfield Township) just before 59 miles (95 km). At about 60 miles (97 km) the trail enters St. Clair Township in Westmoreland County, and between here and 62 miles (100 km) it crosses twice into Lower Yoder Township in Cambria County. It finally leaves the State Game Lands and enters Laurel Ridge State park for the final time before 63 miles (101 km), crossing back into Cambria County (Lower Yoder Township) shortly after that. The eighth and final overnight shelter with potable water is past 64 miles (103 km) and the trail continues northeast until just before 67 miles (108 km), where it turns north and then crosses into Westmoreland County (St. Clair Township). The trail now runs parallel to the Conemaugh River with several vistas of the river valley, and finally ends at 70 miles (110 km).[9][5][10]
Environment
The park, as well as the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, lie within the Appalachian mixed mesophytic forests ecoregion.[11]
Other recreation
The park is open to hunting, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.[1]
Hunting is permitted on almost all of Laurel Ridge State Park. The most common game species are ruffed grouse, turkey and white-tailed deer. The hunting of groundhogs is prohibited. Hunters are expected to follow the rules and regulations of the Pennsylvania Game Commission.[1]
There are 35 miles (56 km) of trails open to cross-country skiing during the winter months at Laurel Ridge State Park and over 70 miles (110 km) of trails open to snow mobiles.[12]

26. und 27. 05. Esztergom
What are you looking for“.
In Komarom it was raining all day long. So we learned, that our tent is real fine. But we didn‘t need to stay in there all day long. We made a rainwalk and stayed inside the kitchen of the campsite. Kitchen parties are the best ones. And of course we visited the thermal baths.
The next morning was pretty foggy and wet but the weatherforecast was just fine and we hopped on our bike. We followed the slovakian trail today, beginning in Komarno the twin city of Komarom. We liked the quiet atmosphere. One waiter of a restaurant called: „What are you looking for“. We answered: „Just the road.“ „Straight ahead!“ he said laughing.
Fine roads, small ones and bigger ones were inviting us and we enjoyed a comfortable ride. So everything was just fine until we reached a huge ditch and Bernhard shouted: „Sh…, I can‘t get out of my pedal“. So we had a slight crash to one side. Nothing really bad happened, though. The bike was fie, the Capt‘n was fine and I‘ve got a bruise on my hip. We were lucky that we got away with that. We don‘t kow if we missed a sign which we did not understand or if there ever was a sign. Bernhard controlled everything and after a short minute of shock we carried on.
The landscape was surprisingly awesome. To the right side we saw the hills of the Tata mountains. Far left we saw the rising hills of the Matra mountains. The huge basilica of Esztergom was rising high on its rocks and showed us the way to Esztergom. We had to cross the slovakian city of Sturovo, crossed the big bridge across the Danube river and reached a campsite in Esztergom at once.
It was so lovely that we decided to stay another day to visit the city and it was really worth it.

Cracks in Senate over elections sequence
New Post has been published on https://www.blueprint.ng/cracks-in-senate-over-elections-sequence/
Cracks in Senate over elections sequence
Ahead of the 2019 general elections, big cracks emerged in the Senate last week over the adoption of a new sequence of elections which places that of the National Assembly first and the Presidential election last. TAIYE ODEWALE examines what led to the cracks and possible scenarios that may play out in the weeks or months ahead.
The genesis
The genesis of the controversy surrounding the sequence of elections for the 2019 polls started last month in the House of Representatives with adoption of a new one different from the one earlier rolled out by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC), Professor Yakub Mahmud in November last year .
The INEC had slated the Presidential and National Assembly elections for February 16, 2019 while the Gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly elections are to be held on March 2nd 2019.
But the House of Representatives in its own amendments to the 2010 electoral Act, included section 25(1) into the act by reordering the sequence of the elections to start from that of the National Assembly, followed by governorship and state assembly election before the Presidential election which was not so with the one earlier passed by the Senate in March last year.
And then the Senate
Build up to the crack in the Senate over the new sequence of elections started about two weeks ago when its committee set up for harmonisation of differences in the electoral act separately passed by the two chambers, adopted the new sequence of elections proposed by the House of Representatives.
In adopting the reordered sequence of election contained in the House of Representatives version of the amended electoral act, the Chairman of the committee, Senator Suleiman Nazif (APC Bauchi North), put it to voice votes of the 12 members present to which they all shouted ayes!
Senator Nazif in his remarks after the adoption of the new sequence of election said the bill did not in any way violates any provisions of section 76 of the 1999 constitution which empowers INEC to fix dates and conduct elections.
He said the words empowering INEC to that effect were duplicated in the bill just as powers confers on the National Assembly by section 4 sub section 2 of the Constitution were exercised in relation to rescheduling of elections.
Also commenting, the Chairman of the House Committee on INEC, Hon Edward Pwajok, said what the House did and concurred to, by the Senate was very necessary in giving credibility to the electoral process in the country.
“The sequence of election provision in the bill is not targeted at anybody but aimed at further given credibility to the electoral process by way of giving the electorates the opportunity to vote based on individual qualities of candidates vying for National Assembly seat”, he said .
He added that if the bill is not assented to by the President, the lawmakers who based on national interest, adopted it, will surely used constitutional provisions at their disposal to make it see the light of the day.
“On whether it would be assented to or not by the President as far as we are concerned remains in the realm of conjuncture for now but if such eventually happens , we ‘ll know how to cross the bridge”, he said.
Only NASS can reorder election
Making further clarification on the sequence of election, a member of the Committee, Senator Dino Melaye (APC Kogi West), said while date for election is the prerogative right of INEC, extant laws of the land gives schedules for such elections as sole responsibility of the National Assembly.
“So contrary to reports and comments by some Nigerians on the reordered sequence of election, National Assembly have not overlapped its boundaries”, he said.
Other members of the committee like Senator Shehu Sani (APC Kaduna Central), Gilbert Nnaji (PDP Enugu South), Abiodun Olujimi (PDP Ekiti South), Peter Nwaoboshi (PDP Delta North) etc, also commented in support of the reordered sequence of elections.
Final debate
Trouble started after presentation of reports on it by the Chairman of the Senate conference committee on it, Senator Nazif Suleiman (APC Bauchi North) to the Senate for consideration.
Being a confluence committee report, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, put motion for adoption of the report straight for voice votes by the senators without subjecting it to any debate.
Tension further heightened when at the voice votes, those who shouted nay did it louder than those who shouted ayes!, but Saraki in his ruling said the ayes have it. Angered by the development, Senator Ovie Omo Agege (APC Delta Central) raised a point of order to call for division but was also overruled by Saraki .
But in another spirited effort to nullify the passage of the act, Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC Kano South) , rose through another point of order to argue that it was against the Senate rules for a conference committee report to be adopted without being debated at the committee of the whole.
Gaya’s argument was however punctured by Saraki who referred him to rule 53(6) of the senate’s standing order which prevents the upper legislative chamber from revisiting any matter that had been ruled upon.
Apparently not satisfied with the explanation, another senator, Abdullahi Adamu, disrupted the proceedings further with another point of order by arguing that the sequence of election included in the act was illegal.
According to him, section 76 of the 1999 constitution vests the power to organise, conduct and fix dates for elections on INEC which in spirit, also includes order of elections as earlier announced by the electoral body.
His argument however infuriated the Senate President who declared that section 25(1) of the electoral act which deals with sequence of elections has nothing to do with organising, conducting and fixing dates for elections, upon which he ruled him out of order and called on the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan (APC Yobe North) , to proceed with next item on the order paper.
Feeling humiliated with Saraki’ s ruling, Abdullahi Adamu, along with nine other aggrieved senators immediately stormed out of the chamber to the Senate’s press centre to express their displeasure over the issue.
The senators who were Abdullahi Yahaya ( APC Kebbi North), Ibrahim Kurfi ( APC Katsina Central), Abu Ibrahim ( APC Katsina South ), Abdullahi Gumel ( APC Jigawa North) , Binta Marshi Garba ( APC Adamawa North), Ali Wakil ( APC Bauchi South), Andrew Uchendu ( APC River East) and Benjamin Uwajumogu ( APC IMO North), declared in their separate submissions that the passed electoral act will not see the light of the day since according to them, it was targeted against President Muhammadu Buhari.
59 senators against it?
Specifically Senator Abdullahi Adamu, who led the group said they already have 59 signatures of senators against the act based on section 25(1) inserted into it.
“Though we are 10 here now, but we can assure you that as at this morning (Wednesday last week), not less than 59 senators have expressed their opposition to the illegal sequence of elections included in the act.
“Perhaps that was the reason why the senate president refused to follow the due process when report on the act was to be adopted in the senate. Section 25(1) of the act reordering the sequence of elections from the one earlier released by INEC last year , is a law targeted at an individual which to us is totally in bad faith and will not be allowed to stand”, he said .
Another member of the group, Senator Ovie Omo Agege said he won his election in 2015 on the platform of Labour Party and not APC but as as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it would be wrong for him to keep quiet when wrong things are being done.
Senator Binta Marshi Garba in her own submission said the hurriedly passed electoral act was nothing but handiwork of an individual who may be thinking that he is holier or greater than the state.
She added that those behind the new sequence of elections are more or less enemies of the country by not considering the economic implications it entail because if INEC based on economic problems at hand mapped out two layers of elections, why coming up with three segmented sequence of elections ?, she queried.
Not targeted at anyone
However, the Senate’s spokesman, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi and Chairman, Senate committee on INEC, Suleiman Nazif, said the act was not targeted at anybody.
“We did it in the best interest of Nigerians and not for any selfish agenda “, Sabi said.
But whether the legislative fireworks on the amended electoral act continues in the Senate or not, it has already created a crack among the senators which may be very difficult to cement ahead of the 2019 polls regardless of whatever scenarios that played out later on the new sequence of elections in terms of Presidential veto of the bill or attempt to override such veto later , by the legislators which would require 2/3 of their votes , 73 in the Senate and 240 in the House of Representatives.
Only my c’ttee can approve El-Rufai’s $350m loan – Sani
By Aliyu Askira
Kano
The senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial district, Shehu Sani, at the weekend in Kaduna, declared that the fact that the House of Representatives Committee on External Loan has approved the state government’s $350 million loan request did not amount to the government securing the money, as only the Senate Committee on External Loan has the final approval that will enable the state access to the loan.
The senator who expressed the desire to contest the governorship of the state in 2019 or seek re-election into the senate, said should the electorate reject him, however, he would go home peacefully without regrets.
He asked Nigerians to judge the performance of the ruling APC from 2015 to date and tell in clear terms whether the administration at federal, state and local government levels has changed their lives for the better or not, explaining that “this is the only yardstick they will use in voting in 2019, adding that “those that are not performing will definitely be rejected but those that have done their best will be returned to office for second term.”
Recently, the human rights activist cum politician, pointed out that the Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasiru El – Rufai, described him in the media as some body that is not used to money. This, he said, is true because he was “not part of the PDP government that looted our treasury.
“I am always amazed when I hear politicians claiming that they did not perform in office because the country’s economy is bad. I don’t believe this because the country is now selling more than two million barrels of crude oil daily at $60 per barrel; so tell me, how can somebody say Nigeria has no money? As for me, Comrade Shehu Sani, I gave people cars, money and houses before I even became a senator.
“In the cause of my fight for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria, I was several arrested by the military junta and thrown into prison. At a point, I shared the same prison cell with Late General Shehu Musa Yar’adua and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and as such, I know the benefit of democratic government and the ills of military dictatorship,” he said.
Speaking on his row with his fight with the state governor, SShehu Sani vowed never to support a government that sacked 22,000 teachers, more than 4,000 local government staff and over 4,000 district heads.
“You see, the calculation is simple; if families of the 30,000 sacked workers reject the governor in 2019, he is as good as a loser. You cannot come from nowhere, after spending 13 years in PDP and now engage everybody in a fight and think that you will get a second term,” he said.

Auf der Flucht der Massen
(6) Affenalarm und gute Sicht

Nass River, BC (No. 2)
The last 40 km (25 mi) of the river are navigable. The river is a commercially valuable salmon fishery. The basin of the Nass is the location of the first modern-day treaty settlement in British Columbia, between the government of that province and the Nisga'a Nation. The name Nisga'a is a reduced form of [naːsqaʔ], which is a loan from Tongass Tlingit, where it means "people of the Nass River".
On the term:
Archdeacon W. H. Collison, an authority on this subject, and who has resided at Kincolith, Nass bay, since 1883, states as follows: - "The term Nass is from the Tlingit tongue, and when, as was probable, the Tlingits from Tongass, at the entrance to Observatory inlet, met Captain Vancouver they gave him their name for the river, i.e., Nass, which means literally "the stomach," from the fact that their food supplies of salmon, oolachan.. a noted fishery."
Nass River Bridge carries Highway 37 over the river
About 220 years ago, as recorded by the oral history of the Nisga'a people, the Nass River was dammed by a 22.5 km (14.0 mi) long lava flow which came from the Tseax Cone and destroyed the Nisga'a villages and caused the death of at least 2000 Nisga'a people by volcanic gas and poisonous smoke. The volcano has been active on at least two occasions (220 and 650 years ago) in the last millennium. Because of our knowledge of this previous disaster, modern monitoring techniques should include studies of the gases emitted by the volcanoes and the institution of a warning system to alert people living down slope from the volcanoes.
