Accidental Proposition - Natalie ‘Fig’ Figeroa/Artesian McCullough

A/N: Part 1 of 25 for the big bingo from @julybreakbingo​ .

Arguing in the Salon had not been the plan. Natalie, known to most of her staff as ‘Fig’, had intended to find Artesian, McCullough, one of her most important workers, and bring her back to the office to talk about what had been going on. Finding Artesian holding tightly to the seat in front of her, taking deep breaths, it’s easier to ask her to stay and talk. Then fight. Fight hard. Artesian had started by admitting she wanted to leave, wanted to just go home. She would still need money and help of course, but she wanted to just quit. Natalie had agreed to let her go if she really wanted, but added that she would miss her and try to do all she could to help her…. And so here they were, still arguing. “Why do you even care?” “Because I love you.” The words come too quickly to be stopped and Natalie pauses, takes a breath, then speaks a little more gently. “I love you. Alright? I just want to help you.” It's the first moment of real, brittle, honesty between them and Natalie can’t help smiling when Artesian snuffles and moves into the offered hug, stroking her back. “You’ll be okay. I’ve got you now.”

“Who would ever believe you?” The words echo as Artesian packs Alex away, the same words Alex once used on her when she was forcing her to bring things into the jail, she sends her miles from Piper, from home, to hide what she had done. The pain of her job had been enough to break her and make her a fool for this woman, so she packs her up, sends her away, resigns her job. She’s trembling as she locks the van, walks away, ignoring Alex’s swearing. Natalie smiles slightly when she knocks at her door, steps back and lets her in, locks the door. She’s quiet as Artesian talks. She’s crying by the time she’s finished and Natalie moves on instinct alone, peels off Artesian’s coat and gently tugs her a little closer, wrapping an arm around her and murmuring the words. “I believe you.”
