Sola/Calling for Rain
@secret-engima and, months later, the snippet I promised!
.
Karin’s first memories are her mother’s grave and her sister’s sick bed.
She knows more than that of course. She knows how her mother died, forced to use their family’s healing ability until they’d drained her chakra dry. She knows her older sister nearly followed their mother that night, eight years old and already scarred across her arms and shoulders.
But that knowledge isn’t seared into her memory the way her mother’s gravestone is, the bamboo marker plain and unmarked, nothing like the stone markers bearing carved names for the village shinobi. That knowledge doesn’t paint itself across her closed eyelids like Kyoho’s frail form, skin too pale, breaths too shallow, wild hair tumbling across the pillows like a splash of blood.
Karin remembers when Kyoho first opened her eyes, how her sister had looked to find Karin first, and hadn’t settled until she could clearly see Karin was well.
.
Karin doesn’t know how much Kyoho’s near death changed her older sister. She can’t remember what Kyoho was like before, can’t remember a time when Kyoho didn’t braid their hair with little painted beads and thin cords of braided thread. Can’t remember a time when Kyoho didn’t hold her close at night and whisper bedtime stories in words that sound like thunder and rain.
Stories and Songs and meanings just for the two of them. Braids and beads hidden beneath hair and cloth, Clan secrets told in the dead of night in a tongue only they knew. Teaching Karin to dance, to fly.
Teaching Karin to survive.
Kyoho trains with the determination not to learn, but master every skill she can. Taijutsu, weapons, healing, ninjutsu. She claws her way up the ranks of Kusa’s shinobi, genin at nine, chuunin at eleven, jounin at fifteen.
Kusa’s own little prodigy. A match for Konoha’s Uchiha Itachi or Hatake Kakashi. Or so Kusa likes to think.
There’s a lot Kusa doesn’t know.
They don’t know of the fuuinjutsu, of the basics learned from their mother that Kyoho took and reinvented on her own. The black tattoos spiraling across Kyoho’s skin hidden from sight under dark green clothing.
They don’t know about the chakra chains Kyoho painstakingly learned to use. Chains Kyoho learned to modify, to shrink to the size of a fine gold chain, to enlarge to the size of the massive chains that once rose from the waves to close Uzushio’s ports.
They don’t know of Kyoho’s sensory abilities, so fine tuned she can pick out a shinobi’s specialization from the feel of their chakra alone. They don’t know of the weapons Kyoho can wield beyond her glaive and curved shortswords.
They don’t know Kyoho’s taught Karin everything she knows. They don’t know Karin isn’t the fumbling, lackluster genin overshadowed by her prodigal sister’s brilliance.
.
“My name is Uzumaki Naruto, and I’m going to kick all of your asses!”
The room goes silent, every genin present turning to stare, and Karin feels her breath freeze in her lungs as the chakra signatures around her spike with anger and disbelief.
Karin buries her own chakra, smothers it down to a spark so small even Kyoho has difficulty detecting, hiding the surprise and recognition and the tangle of emotions she can keep off her face but not out of her chakra. And she knows she shouldn’t focus her attention solely on the loud Konoha genin as his teammates and comrades converge to scold him for his recklessness. There are others in the room far more dangerous than the rookie too dumb not to draw the ire of the rest of the competition before the Exams have even begun. And yet-
Uzumaki.
He doesn’t have the red hair. But that’s the mon on his shoulder, black and purple instead of the black and blue variant Kyoho’s stitched into their clothes, in places easily hidden because there’s Clan Pride but then there’s announcing to all the Elemental Nations that they’re female kekkai genkai bearers.
Karin lessens her hold on her chakra, reaching her senses past the thunderstorm-shadow-river feeling of the three genin standing beside him.
Warmth. Bright encompassing warmth, intense but not painful, the ocean breeze across her skin on a clear sunny day. Swirling reserves deeper than she’s ever sensed, even deeper than Kyoho’s hearth-fire chakra.
Karin suppresses her chakra the moment the blond’s thunderstorm teammate glances her way, glancing away and digging her fingernails into the back of her hand so hard she’s surprised she doesn’t break skin.
She swallows back a sob.
Uzumaki. He’s Clan.
But not Galahdian. Not a child of the Storm-Father, not someone who grew up with the Clan Laws and the certainty in their bones that even if the world fell apart, the Clan would always have your back.
The Uzumaki are a shinobi clan. Karin can’t… how can she know if she can trust this wayward Uzumaki? How can she know if he will hold that same fierce loyalty that blazes in her and Kyoho’s souls?
She shouldn’t. Oh, but by the Storm-Father, Karin wants to. This long lost kinsman who wears Freedom and Protection across his shoulders. Who looks at the world with Protection in his eyes and crowned with Love.
Karin knows the Colors don’t apply to the natural world. To things that are mere happenstance and genetic chance. But-
(‘Sometimes the Gods paint us with specific Colors,’ Karin remembers Kyoho telling her, ‘A message and a warning, for souls so strong the physical has no choice but to reflect it.’
Karin had looked into Blue eyes framed by Red hair, and never asked if Kyoho spoke from experience.)
For the first time in nearly ten years, Karin hopes.
She has to try.
And that means staying in Konoha long enough to get a measure of Uzumaki Naruto.
.
Karin is perfectly happy not knowing how something gets named the ‘Forest of Death.’
Unfortunately, as the location of the Second Exam, Karin’s not going to get a choice.
Kyoho would love it, Karin thinks as she miserably fills out the liability waiver. Kyoho had spoken of many places in her past life, but none so fondly as Galahd, deadly and wild and all the more beautiful for it.
She lets her ‘teammates’ take the lead as they scout through the forest. Her head’s busy planning her next step. Should she focus on passing the Second Exam? Kyoho told her how the Third Exam was always an exhibition for clients, so she’d have plenty of time during the preparations to track down and try to get to know her kinsman. Perhaps with Kyoho’s help even - surely her mission would be finished by then?
But that assumes Karin and the two idiots she’s assigned to play chakra-battery for can pass at all. They aren’t the weakest team in the forest, even counting Karin’s careful pretense, but there are a lot of teams stronger than they are. Stronger, and all too willing to kill.
Karin could ditch the idiots. She’s kept track of where she last sensed Uzumaki Naruto’s chakra, so she could find him and get to know him in the time before the Second Exam ends. Maybe even steal the Earth scroll and bring it as a good faith gift.
But she’d be on her own, carrying a high value target, and gambling on her kinsman caring enough about a cousin he didn’t know to trust and protect her.
Karin tugs on the loose ends of her hair in frustration. Why is this so hard?!
Kyoho would know what to do.
Kyoho’s not here, Karin firmly reminds herself. She has to figure this out on her own.
In the end, she chooses to stay with her teammates. There's too many unknowns for her to risk running now.
.
Two days later, staring up at the bear taller than her house, Karin's regretting her decision to stay.
They left me!
Stay and hide, they said. You'll be fine.
If they're still alive when Karin finds them, she's going to throttle them. Hiding her chakra doesn't matter when enemies can find her by her scent! The bear snarls, and Karin gives up any pretense of hiding her abilities. She's out of her depth, anything less than her full skill will only end up with her dead-
("Above all else," Kyoho had whispered the night before Karin left for Konoha, "survive.")
She reaches for her supply of explosive tags (way more than anyone thinks she has, way more than she probably needs, but they're the easiest seal to make and Kyoho always says there's no such thing as overkill) and prepares to turn the bear into a pile of charred meat and fur.
Only, there's movement above her, a blur of black and purple, a flash of silver-
Thunder. Lightning and rain and the howling storm as she huddles by the warmth of hearth, each flash of light in the sky accompanied by the rolling drums that echo in her chest; an invitation, a challenge, to face the storm and laugh in the embrace of the sky.
Uzumaki's dark haired teammate lunges from the trees like one of the jungle cats of Kyoho's stories, dropping down onto the bear with a spinning, flying kick, and Kyoho freezes.
Kyoho knows that kick.
(Karin stares wide-eyed as Kyoho all but flies through the air, leaping and spinning with the grace of a breeze through the prairie grasses. Kyoho's been teaching her how to dance, but those jumps have nothing on the ones Kyoho is doing!
"Will I learn to do that too?" Karin asks. Nerves flit in her gut like butterflies. She's trying to learn everything Kyoho can teach her, but those leaps are so high.
Blue eyes soften as Kyoho ruffles her hair. "You don't have to - it's not part of the Ostium Dance."
Karin blinks. "It's not?"
"It's Ulric, our sister Clan." Kyoho says. Her gaze grows distant. "Clan of Sky and Storm, Coeurl-kin, first of the Storm-Father's children."
Karin's touch on her arm brings her back to the present. "Were you Ulric first, before you were Ostium?"
Kyoho laughs. "I was Furia, Clan of Sea and Horizon, but I learned the Ulric Dance because I was Sky-born instead of Sea-born.")
She can't see a braid, but- Black and purple. A pair of well worn kukri at his back. The aerial combat she's never seen anyone but Kyoho use.
Her fingers tremble around the string of explosive tags as the genin checks to make sure the bear is dead. Then he turns to her with an easy grin. "You're an Uzumaki, right? Do you want to meet your cousin?"
And Karin has been so keyed up over possibly having Clan, over being in hostile territory with no one to watch her back, with desperate hope dogging her heels for the past three days of finding someone she can trust-
(“You can always trust the Clans. Even the most bitter rivals will protect a Clan child, if they are threatened by Outsiders.”)
"Are you Ulric?" She blurts.
Dark eyes sharpen. "How do you know that name?" But his gaze flits to her temple, to the black braid joiner peeking out from her hair. Karin removes the grey hitai-ate and pulls her hair back to show him her braids. The Ostium Braid and the Mourning Braid for her mother, unlike Kyoho who also wears Marriage, Hero, and Revenge Braids. Braids Karin and Kyoho have never shown anyone but each other.
But the boy's eyes widen in shock and recognition, and pale fingers pull the Ulric Braid threaded with the purple ribbon of a Chief from its hiding place behind his ear.
("And if you get the chance, run. Before Kusa kills you too.")
Karin sobs.
This boy is Clan. He's safe.

Tumblr media
IT'S MY BOYYYYYYYYY.
I commissioned @akinaw to draw Nyxsuke in his Naruto og/genin stage and she did SUCH AN AMAZING JOB. Look at him. He is so cute and amazing. Small Galahdian Uchiha child out here calmly preparing to sow chaos in Ninja society.
And because I do not trust that tumblr will actually tag Akinaw, here's a LINK to her tumblr if you wanna look at her art and maybe commission her too!

So I'm dumb and scouring through Final Fantasy just to learn what the significance of colors means is to complex for me, so could you explain to me what colors have what meaning and cultural significance to Nyxsuke and Lib?
The color meanings are not canon, if you're scrounging through canon content, sorry! Galahdian color meanings are something I started HCing and that @a-world-in-grey also picked up and helped me expand on greatly. You can find them ... somewhere in the galahd culture tag on my blog. But to give a quick overview of colors most relevant to Nyxsuke and Lib:
Purple - Color of Loyalty, also one of the two primary colors of Clan Ulric, it signifies the clan's stubborn loyalty to causes, family, and keeping their word.
Black - Color of Undaunted, basically to wear black means you do not shy away from danger, having too much black in your clothing can also indicate you are brave to the point of being reckless. It is the second primary color of Clan Ulric.
Blue - Color of Protection, it is one of the primary colors of Clan Ostium, their other primary color is Black, which was adopted from Ulrics. As sister clans, the Ostiums are considered to be kinda the braincells of the Ulrics, and their Undaunted color adoption is because they keep having to wade into trouble to scruff their local Ulrics and drag them out.
Other relevant colors off the top of my head for Nyxsuke verse specifically would be:
Red - Wrath/War
White - Purity of Ash, this color worn on clothing very specifically signifies that the wearer is ready and intending to destroy Something or Someone until literally nothing of it remains. The more white there is, the bigger the target.
Pink - Poison/Deception, you can imagine how many heart attacks this gives Nyxsuke whenever Sakura prances by in red dresses with pink hair.
Green - Vigilance, can either mean that the wearer IS vigilant or can mean that those who see the wearer should BE vigilant.
Orange - Freedom (you can see why Nyxsuke double-takes so hard over Gai and his Green-on-Orange color scheme probably, dude is literally out here as a walking warning sign with a few accents of "I do what I want")
There are more, as well as specific combo meanings, but I'll be here for like an hour if I try to write it all out all over again XD. Again, if you want to read more, just browse through the galahd culture tag on my blog for all the Galahdian hcs. I think I also tagged color posts specifically as "galahd colors" or "galahd color meanings" but I'm not 100% sure anymore. It's been a while.

I SUDDENLY HAVE A VIOLENT NEED TO KNOW NYXSUKE'S FEELINGS ON THE OPEN-TOED SANDALS. PLEASE TELL. I just. I just feel like it's something either he or the other reincarnates would have Opinions on. Like long-winded rant that their friends have heard many times sort of opinions.
Oh they have opinions alright. Their opinions are that open toed sandals are fine?? For when you're just bopping around your home or even the village or whatever but- why. Why for combat. Why for FIGHTING AND RUNNING ON TREETOPS. WHY.
The opinions are more detailed but yeah XD. That's the gist.

Hatake!Cor: just when does he drop into Kakashi's lap? *How* does he drop into Kakashi's lap and how did Danzo find/steal Cor in the first place? Also, what are everyone else's reactions to Kakashi having a genius child just as if not more feral than he was? Hell, how does everyone else even find out that Kakashi now has a kid? Because like, I'm imagining possible scenarios and they're ALL glorious chaos.
YES THIS WAS THE MISSING ASK. Thank you for resending it.
Anyway- okay so according to my garbled pile of notes, Cor was the result of 19 yr old Kakashi having a one night stand with a native Konoha prostitute, who knows why. Either trying to see if that version of "stress relief" that his comrades talk about actually helps, or maybe on a bet or maybe he was drunk for once and his group thought it would be funny to hook him up with someone. EITHER WAY. It happened. A baby happened. And since the prostitute knew the baby was a ninja baby, there's probably a protocol against getting rid of the child because of potential Bloodline stuff. I can see Konoha having rules in place for that as well as like- special funds to pay off ladies in that profession who have a ninja kid, even if the ninja parent refuses to accept the kid into their family. There's probably a bonus fee for if the kid is from a dying out bloodline like the Hatake.
And *naturally* Danzo has his greedy little paws in the hospital, specifically the maternity ward, just for the occasions that something like this happens and an unaccounted for child of a strong bloodline shows up (who wants to guess how many main clan bloodlines he has in Root specifically because of this shadow program he snuck by under Sarutobi's nose. Answer; a lot.). So when a Clearly Hatake Baby shows up in the ward with a mother who is looking to take her Baby Fee and leave, he easily has his agents in the hospital pay her off and send her on her way (and lbr probably arrange an accident for her later so she can't tell anyone) and snap up the baby to be raised in a Root approved location. Like that orphanage that Danzo canonically yoinked kids out of whenever he wanted or something, to be disappeared into Roots actual ranks when Cor was all of 3.
KAKASHI ON THE OTHER HAND does not realize he has a child until after Nyx finds out about Danzo and proceeds to furiously rip out the entire operation by the roots (heh). I have ... yet to pick when in the timeline that happens specifically but I'm thinking sometime *after* that bridge mission (Kenchi Bridge? Tenchi Bridge???) and *before* the start of the Pain arc. Also possibly before the whole Asuma arc that I haven't decided what to do with yet. So Cor is gonna be- 11? 10-11? When he gets dropped into Kakashi's awareness.
I am also majorly tempted to see if I can slip in a few accidental encounters/sightings between them over the timeskip but we will see.
Also the thing you need to know about Cor is he is not only Feral but Smart (which is a given) and probably Kakashi's first proper introduction to the concept of having a child is going to be right on the heels of his student killing a village Elder in Glorious Battle and uprooting (heh) the organization that Sarutobi was supposed to have dealt with after the whole thing with Tenzo. So he's already reeling and stressed. And then it turns out that literally everyone in Root who is 20 and under is actually loyal to this Root *kid* who managed to sneak and plot and snitch their devotion right out from under Danzo's nose in a long term plan to free everyone that Nyx accidentally blew out of the water. Just- a significant chunk of Danzo's shadow army is actually loyal to and being run by a child and congrats Kakashi. That child is yours.
Your unknown feral Hatake son is technically the new leader of Root. He was smart enough to achieve that under Danzo's nose, he has absolutely no ties or loyalty to Konoha outside a tenuous one with Nyxsuke for killing Danzo (and being a fellow reincarnation), and he is now 100% legally your problem- says Tsunade, probably, as she chucks that specific result of the blood test every Root member is going through at Kakashi's head.
Kakashi has no idea how to parent. As far as Cor is concerned that's fine because he doesn't want a parent. The verbal declaration of this opinion however does not help Kakashi, but instead sends him into a deeper crisis over the concept of trying to parent a Definitely Traumatized Genius and oh my word Minato-Sensei he owes you so many apologies for putting up with small Kakashi.
So while Kakashi probably has a meltdown or five and Nyx bemusedly tries to help the man win a modicum of respect from Cor, Imma try to speculate on some of the other ninja's reactions to Cor's existence. They probably learn of Cor's existence through the gossip mill for the most part? Kakashi's closer friends like Gai learn because he has a meltdown nearby over the confirmed blood test. But the general reactions I'm seeing are:
Reaction 1 is probably: He has a what.
Reaction 2, upon actually seeing this tiny 10-11 year old gruffly bossing around other traumatized child soldiers and traumatized adult ninja like he's a mini Hokage and/or glaring down a regular Konoha nin like they're idiots: Oh yeah I can definitely see it now.
Reaction 3, upon facing down Cor's wrath after trying to meddle in the affairs of the newly unearthed Root and/or the Hatake family situation is: help this one is even more feral than the adult Hatake. We take everything about Kakashi back, this is so much worse.
Unless you are Gai. In which case your reaction is Overflowing Youthful Tears that successfully send Cor fleeing for the hills in confusion and much Hugging of Rival in Congratulations For His Genius Child.

Does Nyxsuke have any memories of Shisui? Does Kakashi have any memories of Shisui and Itachi in ANBU?
Nyxsuke has memories of Shisui in his Sasuke half yes, he's *kind* of avoiding them subconsciously right now, because they are mostly tied up with his Itachi memories and he understandably doesn't want to think on those. Kakashi has plenty of memories of Shisui and Itachi, as I have gleefully adopted the fanon that they were both on his team for a while. Actually Itachi being on his team is canonical iirc, but whether Shisui was in ANBU before or after Itachi was transferred to Danzo's "care" is up for debate, and I say that them being on Team Ro would be fun. So.

Very AU Snip of Calling for Rain verse
(I will explain myself at the bottom of this snip, but for now I want everyone to be surprised. ;))
...
     Nyx-kun idly pushed one of his tiny braids behind his ear and it reminded Kushina of an important question, “Say…” he looked up from the notes he’d been scribbling, —he had relaxed enough now in their presence to forget himself and start jotting down notes for another seal, how cute— and made an inquiring noise. Kushina gestured at his braids, “How do you get the ink inside the stone? It’s been driving Minato crazy trying to figure it out, ‘ttebane.”
     “Oh,” mouthed Nyx-kun softly. He raised his voice, “I forgot about that. Uh…” he fidgeted, “I could show you? It might be easier than trying to explain.”
     “Is it safe?” Minato asked, because he was a wuss like that sometimes, and the glance at her belly told her why.
     She glared at her husband and Nyx-kun hurried to answer, “Yes, Yondaime. I perfected that part years ago. It’s perfectly safe to observe.”
     Minato relaxed, “Alright then, and please, call me Minato when I’m out of my office.”
     She could see the protests getting bottled up and the gears turning in the kid’s head before he tipped his chin and reached into a pouch on his hip. He pulled out a storage scroll and unrolled it on the coffee table. A flick of his fingers and tools puffed out, including an entire sack of rattling stone pieces of lots of different colors. Minato leaned closer to watch as Nyx-kun sorted through them, humming under his breath as he seemed to judge them by some unknown criteria and then find them wanting. Kushina tried to lean closer but … yeah no. Not with Naruto so close to being due.
     Eventually, he picked out a stone and rolled it in his fingers thoughtfully. He looked … unsure of himself, suddenly so very young and tired under the weight of whatever he was thinking. Then he shook it off and set the stone aside, sweeping the others into his bag. He had chosen one it seemed, an oblong one that was a beautiful orangey color with dark blue stripes running through it. She had no idea what set it apart from the others, but he seemed satisfied with his choice. He looked up at them with a smile, “I’ve done this enough times I can just do it with my hand, but when I was first figuring this out, I used to take a little piece of paper like this…” he tore a corner off the scroll he’d used to take notes, and inked out the seal.
     The seal he made was tiny and Kushina’s fingers ached in sympathy for the practice it must have taken to make a perfect seal at that small a size. Nyx-kun’s eyes flickered red for a moment, checking his own work before he showed it to Kushina and Minato. Kushina spotted the difference in the seal, but Minato beat her to asking about it, “The outer ring is new. … Melt?”
     “Absorption,” Nyx-kun corrected absently. He then wrapped the bead carefully in the paper, making sure not to smudge the new ink with his finger’s, and held it out to them, “Hold your hands over mine and push some chakra into the seal. Don’t worry about overloading it, I’ll control the flow.” Kushina and Minato shared a look, then held out their hands and obediently sent the seal some of their chakra. She could feel Nyx-kun’s wrapping around theirs, cool and sharp like thunderstorms and lightning, controlling the flow into the seal until it-.
     Lit on fire. A soft puff of flame that Nyx-kun didn’t so much as flinch from even though it was in his bare hand. The paper burned away, but the ink of the seal … stayed. Wrapped around the bead and then sank into it like the bead was liquid rather than stone-. Kushina breathed, “That’s brilliant, dattebane. You used ‘absorption’ to mean ‘absorb into the stone’.”
     Nyx-kun grinned at them as the ink settled into place inside the stone, “Yeah. That way it can’t get scratched off. The only way to disrupt it is to break the bead itself.” He juggled it a bit until it stopped glowing faintly from heat and chakra. He rolled it in his fingers a few times with a strangely sad look on his face, then he held it out to Kushina, “Here. It’s yours.”
     Kushina blinked, “Eh-, are you sure?”
     The young Uchiha nodded, his gaze solemn and … fragile. Like he was afraid she’d get mad, “You both donated chakra for it, it’s keyed to you now. If someone pushes chakra into it,” his hand glowed and it felt like someone was yanking on Kushina’s hair, drying to drag her attention to the bead even though she was already staring at it, “you’ll both feel it.” He hesitantly reached out, pulling Kushina’s hand toward him with the palm up. He dropped the bead into her palm and curled her fingers around it with a smile, “A gift. For- for the child.”
     Kushina hesitated. Because seals weren’t just something you gave away, especially not one that you had personally created. But there was something fervent in his eyes, that familiar faith and Will of Fire Minato inspired in a lot of his ninja, as well as something almost desperate, worried.
     As she accepted the bead with a laugh and a thanks, she wondered if Nyx-kun had lost his mother to childbirth, if her own pregnancy was making him nervous with memory and this was how he assuaged it. She didn’t ask, just grinned and rolled the little bead in her fingers, “I’m sure little Naru will love it, when he’s old enough I’ll braid it into his hair just like yours. Would you like that, Naruto?” She asked the question at her swollen belly, more as a joke than anything, but the midwife had said talking to the baby was good for him, so she made a point to do it semi-regularly —only semi since Minato talked to Naruto incessantly when they were home alone and she was pretty sure the sheer amount of her husband’s words had any health benefits more than covered—. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Nyx-kun suppress a flinch and glance away, heard him take a careful breath she knew by experience was from having to suppress a sharp and grieving memory.
     “Are you alright?” Minato asked him, because he cared about all the village, but he and Kushina knew very well how deeply Uchiha’s emotions effected them, how powerful their reactions could be.
     Nyx-kun took another breath and shook himself, then smiled, “I’m fine. Just- memories.” He cleared his throat a little, suddenly awkward all over again and stood up, “I’m sorry Yondaime, Kushina-san, but I should-. I need to go home now, it’s- it’s late.”
     Kushina and Minato exchanged glances. Having raised a genin team and worked with a lot of younger ninja, they knew the sound of a teenager trying frantically to leave a situation before he made a fool of himself with his emotions. Better to let him go and track him down later for that apprenticeship idea of hers rather than pushing him here, “Of course, I understand,” Minato murmured smoothly, “let me walk you to the door.”
     “Thanks.”
     Kushina waved as they left, “Come again soon, dattebane! I’m sure Naruto would love to meet you in another week or two!” Nyx-kun’s step hitched on nothing, but he smiled over his shoulder and agreed with her invitation like nothing was wrong. She listened to Minato saying his goodbyes to Nyx-kun in the door, and rolled the bead over in her fingers thoughtfully. When Minato came back, they talked for a while, first about Nyx-kun, then about their son who was about to be born.
~~~
     In the quiet of the village at night, no one noticed the Uchiha who fled with feet like wings to a secluded training ground. No one saw as he crumbled in the nook of a high tree branch, knees pulled to his chest and shoulders shaking.
     No one saw tears drip from sharingan eyes over the little orange and blue bead he knew Naruto’s parents wouldn’t live long enough to give to him.
...
(Okay so this is where my muses got weird. I started this to play with what I thought Nyx’s sealing ability/style would be when he grows up, but I’d JUST watched Lost Tower and so my brain went “Hey you know what would be cool? If teenage Nyx met another Seals master and that’s the lens we saw Nyx’s seals through!”
And I went “but we hate Jiraiya and so does Nyx”
And the muses went “TEmpORaRy TImE-TrAVeL AnGsT shOt” and here we are now, so behold the snip of the time travel/exploratory ... THING that I am in no way saying is canon for this verse (I’m also not saying it ISN’T canon because we all know I love my angst).)
Thinking about Nyxsuke and Kakashi.
Thinking about how their relationship is rocky and honestly Nyxsuke doesn’t respect him as a teacher until well post chuunin exams arc because WE know Kakashi is just a poorly socialized traumatized human bean with his own reasons for being anti-social and distant but NYXSUKE doesn’t. All Nyxsuke sees is a sensei who doesn’t seem to HATE Naruto so much as ignore his existence (and how many villagers do that? How many have done that since Naruto was a small child in NEED and they didn’t spit hate so much as pretend he didn’t exist and that did so much more damage to Naruto emotionally and mentally?) and treat them like unwanted pets he got saddled with because of the Hokage’s orders. He never trains them until their lives are in danger in Wave and even then it’s something piddly and basic, he never really helps in the D-Ranks, he’s always reading his book rather than paying attention to them and that ... that makes Nyxsuke so angry.
They are children soldiers forced to fight and the man in charge of teaching them is just- coasting. He keeps them alive on missions, he verbally touts that “protect comrades” thing but other than that... he lets them alone. He lets Nyxsuke take command and do everything. It’s Nyxsuke who organizes training and spars, Nyxsuke who critiques fights, Nyxsuke who gets Sakura to eat and dress right and train right, it’s Nyxsuke who spots Sakura’s natural strength and chakra control and starts guiding her onto paths that will make the most use of it. It’s Nyxsuke who Naruto looks to when there’s danger and he wants to feel safe. It’s Nyxsuke holding the team together and making it something More™. Not Kakashi, not the physical adult. The ORPHANED, TWELVE YEAR OLD BOY who is not really all there mentally (Nyx is aware he’s probably not ... the definition of sane. Who would be after dying twice and watching his second clan get massacred over and over in a genjutsu?). And yet-
And yet no one else is going to do it. So he has to.
And Nyxsuke hates Kakashi for that. Just a little bit.
Thinking about those things. And how it all comes to a head when Kakashi isolates Nyxsuke during the month preparation for the last exam, drags him off to train for the Gaara fight and just- leaves Naruto and Sakura behind. Dumps Naruto on Ebisu and goes off to train the Last Uchiha.
Thinking about how he finally snaps about it, tries to run off back to Konoha and his kids. How when Kakashi tries to pull rank and say “I’m your teacher” Nyxsuke SNAPS because since when? Since when has he been anything but a babysitter? Since when has he done anything more than the minimum effort to keep them alive and look like he’s doing his job when he clearly doesn’t want them? SINCE WHEN HAS KAKASHI BEEN ON THE TEAM? Since he let Nyxsuke take over all his duties? Since Nyxsuke started writing the reports and then taught Sakura to do them to? Since Kakashi let them wander off to the mission desk alone to pick whatever d-ranks they want? SINCE WHEN HAS KAKASHI CARED? Since when, EVER, has he looked at the three of them and SEEN THEM and not just responsibilities to be loosely adhered to? Not seen the Demon Brat and a Useless Civilian and the Last Uchiha?
And Kakashi, who is Awkward Traumatized Bean, looks into blazing, furious eyes and bared teeth of his feral little student and realizes...
Yeah. He messed up big time.
Thinking about how Kakashi gets a verbal (and maybe literal) punch to the face that reminds him that YEAH, kids are smarter than they look and they absolutely picked up on his avoidance, but not the reasons WHY (the way Naruto is Kushina and Minato’s ghost in one, the way Nyxsuke is too much like Kakashi himself and also Obito by turns, the way he has no idea how to handle a civilian because he’s never BEEN AROUND CIVILIANS unless it’s a mission) and come to all the wrong conclusions. His students- his pack- his PUPPIES think he hates them, and now the little alpha pup he’s been trying to give some freedoms to, trying to encourage by just- letting him find his feet, has taken his silence not as encouragement but as neglect. That the reason his bby Uchiha is always glaring and growly and snappy at him isn’t because he’s an Uchiha (and there’s Kakashi’s biggest mistake, treating the kids like the memories of others and not like themselves) but because the boy thinks Kakashi wants nothing to do with them and is keeping them alive out of grudging duty.
And what pack is going to follow an alpha that doesn’t care about them?
Just-
Thinking these things. And how it’s going to take a while for them to rebuild the bridges Kakashi has been unknowingly slow-burning since day one when he was three hours late to meet his new team and Nyxsuke took it as a sign of neglectful apathy rather than nerves and Kakashi Quirks.
The Misty Three might end up apologizing profusely to the Konoha Glaive if/when they ever meet up. There are - some tense moments, with a lot of recognition of how Karma has taken a suitable revenge upon the one-time traitors. Is - well, I'd kinda like for there to be bridges mended on both sides, but I'm a sucker for happy endings.
There will be much angst and many apologies but YES there will be mended bridges and happy endings because tbh I’m a sucker for those too. That and the Misty Three (plus Sonitus) have already paid the price of Kinslayers. They DIED. And now on top of that they woke up in places that were horrible and brutal and filled with Kinslayers and traitors and backstabbers. They’ve suffered enough in Nyx’s eyes (because even at the end he still loved them as brothers, for all they had betrayed him, even after all they had done to him and his) and Lib, Crowe, and Pelna all take their cues from Nyx on it and ... forgive. Cautiously, and not very smoothly, but they do forgive.
Nobody in Konoha or Mist has any idea why their crazy trio gets along so well with Konoha’s particular pack of crazies, but they do and nobody really wants to get close enough to that pack of Feral Galahdians long enough to ask. XD
Snippet of Hiashi’s POV of Calling for Rain chap 6
(Long snip! Couldn’t resist tho. Here’s a look on that Hiashi POV I’m working on, I decided to show some of the LAST snip but from Hiashis POV rather than Hinata’s).
...
     “She’s a good student, not to mention a fellow classmate and friend,” Sasuke-kun agreed. That was not how Hiashi would describe his daughter, as much as he would wish otherwise, but Hiashi kept that thought to himself.
     His father, however, did not. He scoffed, “Hinata-sama does not have the talent or will for the ninja arts. She has always done poorly during training.”
     Sasuke-kun’s smile sharpened, and in his black eyes anger turned to fury, “Hinata-chan is a good listener and eager to please. She is open to corrections and very diligent in her training and I’ve never had a problem teaching her. Talent is a faulty crutch without hard work, and Hinata-chan has always worked hard during our lessons both inside Academy and out.”
     His father scoffed again, but Hiashi could hear the hidden accusation, and it made his hackles rise, “What are you implying?” That wasn’t really his question, his words were a chance for the boy to back down before his youth and inexperience got him in trouble with his elders and betters.
     The boy did not back down, if anything his smile grew fangs, and at Hiashi’s side, Hinata tensed like she was bracing for something, “In my clan there was always a saying, ‘if the student is diligent yet continues to struggle, then it is not the student’s fault, but the teacher’s’.”
     The insult to the clan was all but offered on a silver platter, so thinly veiled it might as well have not been at all. She isn’t a bad student, he was saying, all of you are just failures at teaching. Hiashi didn’t give the boy the satisfaction of a reaction. He was just a child, for all Hiashi was rapidly coming to the conclusion he was a lot more of a prodigy than Fugaku-san had ever given his youngest son credit for, but Hiroto’s fists clenched in fury, “You dare insult the Hyūga Clan-!”
     Sasuke-kun didn’t even blink. He was watching Hiashi expectantly, waiting for his reaction, “You are implying,” Hiashi asked in a flat voice, “that Hinata’s own clan is failing her?”
     The boy picked up the teacup and sipped it like the action might help hide the way his hands were all but shaking with rage —rage … for what? On behalf of … Hinata?— and when he set the cup down, he didn’t let go of it. The smile grew, full of teeth and a glitter of danger that made Hiashi’s instincts bristle more out of surprise than actual belief in the unspoken threat, “Hinata-chan overreaches with her strikes when flustered, like she instinctively expects her opponent to have a much longer reach and leg range than her and is trying to compensate, she pulls back her strikes at the last second because she expects them to fail and for her wrists to get trapped if she fully commits, she flinches from even light strikes like she expects to gain bruises and lacerations -which I’m sure has nothing to do with how often she wears long sleeves even in the middle of summer-, and she struggles with in-battle confidence because she has this wild idea that no matter how many hours she practices she is automatically a failure. But no, I would never dream of implying that her own family that she trains with far more often than myself or the other Academy students has anything to do with that.”
     Hiashi had no time to form his own reaction, because his father surged to his feet and loomed over the boy with a pulse of Intent that was just shy of actual Killing Intent. It wasn’t enough to count as a threat against a fellow Konohan, but it was definitely meant to force the boy into submission as Hiroto roared, “You rude, insolent little child! You should be thrown from the Compound-.”
     Instead of cringing like Hiashi’s daughter was doing, or crumbling into a crying mess like more than a few clan children had when disciplined with Intent —a practice Hiashi had never approved of, or used, considering how often it had been inflicted on him, but it was a traditional punishment of the clan dating back before Konoha’s Founding—,  Sasuke-kun turned his smile on Hiroto. Killing Intent spilled into the air, contained and definitely subconscious, but sharp enough that it made Hiashi itch for a kunai and something cold grip his throat. The Uchiha’s Killing Intent swatted aside Hiroto’s like it was nothing, and when Sasuke-kun spoke, there was no sign of an unsteady child, there was just the venom of contempt, “I am not a little child, nor am I insolent. I stopped being a child when our gracious and wise Lord Hokage decided that, as the head and last of my clan, I was to live in my compound on my own.”
     Hiroto stilled, both from the Killing Intent and the implications. No one had asked what had become of the Uchiha, he still lived in his compound and they had all assumed it was because he had insisted on staying in his family home. Hiashi had assumed Lord Hokage had chosen a caretaker to look after the boy outside of Academy, to look after the empty clan grounds, and yet he apparently had not. And yet Sasuke-kun had apparently been living completely on his own for months, and what was the Hokage thinking, leaving an Uchiha —a prodigy Uchiha, how anyone had missed the boy’s prodigal intelligence and maturity was a mystery— alone with his thoughts and ghosts —did the Hokage want the Village’s last Uchiha to go the way of his brother and snap into a bloody rampage?—.
     Sasuke-kun continued, unaware —or just not caring— of how his words had made Hiashi flinch, “I have come here as the Clan Head of the Uchiha, to speak facts with Hiashi-san, as a fellow Clan Head, about a fellow Konohan, a fellow classmate, and a future fellow shinobi. The only person to be rude in this room has been you, for insulting me, the head of the Uchia. The only person in this room who has been insolent has been you, for speaking out of turn without the permission of your Clan Head, Hiashi-san.”
     The Last Uchiha let that sit in the air between them, heavy as a stone and unyielding as steel, and Hiashi stopped thinking of him as a child or a boy. There was no childishness left in the person before him, no timidity or naivety. There was just hard steel, the likes of which he usually only saw in those who had survived their first A-rank. It should not have been something he could find in an Academy student.
     But it was, painfully and clearly, something he could find in the survivor of a massacre.
     The Uchiha’s smile dropped and he turned cold, furious eyes on Hiashi. The faint Killing Intent in the air turned expectant, demanding almost. He’s your clansman and you are his clan head, black eyes said, control him.
     Hiashi stared back and refused to give a reaction as he raised his hand toward his father, “Sit down, Hiroto.”
     “Hiashi-!”
     “Sit.” His tone brooked no argument, no nagging, or insolence. This was not the time for his father to act as the former Clan Head who could nitpick at his son’s choices. They were in conversation with another Clan Head. Hiashi would be obeyed in front of an outsider.
My Muses: Soooo you know how you said no more reincarnations in Calling for Rain verse?
Me: Yes I remember and NO I’M NOT CHANGING MY MIND.
My Muses: Not even for Noct and Luna? Not even for adorable Hyuga Ignis?
My Muses: But what about-
Me: NO.
My Muses: *do the mic drop but instead of a mic it’s Tiny Feral Cor Reincarnation and instead of him dropping onto the floor he drops into the lap of one (1) internally screaming Hatake Kakashi who would REALLY LIKE to wake up now and realize that the Hatake Colored Murder Child is not in fact real and is not in fact his oops baby that Danzō found and stole for Root purposes*.
Me: ....
My Muses: >:DDD
Oh look since I’m on a roll. Here is a song that is Very Specifically for the eventual Danzo Vs Nyxsuke fight. Just- Nyxsuke prowling toward Danzo with this as the OST, lightning flickering off his shoulders, sharingan spinning-. Just- yes. >:DDD
Lyrics for those who want them:
Caught in the middle of your web
Now your hands are red
Every word you said feels hollow
All of the promises you've made
Are dead and washed away
Your smoke and mirrors won't change what I know
 I know your secrets
I know your lies
I see the darkness
Living inside
There's no where to run to
No where to hide
Cause I know your secrets
I know your lies
 Lost in the monster you've become
Now you're on the run
Living life behind the shadows
Crossed with a target on your head
Now you've made your bed
Nothing left to say now
 I know your secrets
I know your lies
I see the darkness
Living inside
There's no where to run to
No where to hide
Cause I know your secrets
Yeah I know your secrets
I know your secrets
I know your lies
 (No where to run to)
(No where to hide)
 (I know your secrets)
(I know your lies)
So I was reading through Calling For Rain posts again and I came across the one where Nyxsuke will be having WORDS with Hiruzen about the Itachi situation... but it's also so much worse than just that when you think about the things Danzo did even before that and the Hokage literally did nothing about him after that.
Like Itachi was on an ANBU team with Kakashi and Tenzo, right? And what happened involving Kakashi before Tenzo was even on the team, let alone Itachi? Danzo literally ordering Kakashi to kill the 3rd Hokage. What does Hiruzen do about this when Kakashi tells him? NOTHING.
Now let's fast forward a little bit when Kakashi bring Tenzo to the Hokage's attention (still before the Itachi Mess) and Hiruzen finds out about both Danzo AND Orochimaru messing with his sensei's brother's DNA to commit bloodline theft. One again, what does Hiruzen do about this? He let's Orochimaru live and does nothing about Danzo again.
And now we have the Clan Massacre when Danzo ordered the death of an entire clan that literally made up their ENTIRE POLICE FORCE behind Hiruzen's back by emotionally blackmailing a 13yr old child. And what does the Hokage do? NOTHING.
If Nyxsuke ever find out how much death could have been avoided if Hiruzen just put Danzo down like the mad dog he was, there will be blood. Not just words lol
Oh absolutely. I try not to talk about what's gonna go down in too much detail because I'm not *sure* how much Nyx will end up finding out? But Hiruzen is probably only going to be alive so long as *Naruto* wants him to be. In Nyx's book, as soon as Naruto comes to his senses and says Hiruzen deserves death? The old man is toast.
But at the very least there will be much yelling. And probably like- other consequences. But again, that's too far out for me to concretely say *what*.
Snippet of Calling for Rain
(A look at Nyxsuke through Tenzo’s eyes. :D)
    A hand patted his knee and Tenzo blinked behind his mask. Sasuke-kun cracked open an eye that flickered a lazy red before settling, “You’re thinking too hard.”
    Right. Sasuke-kun was a sensor on top of already having a sharingan and a scarily intuitive talent for seals. All things Tenzo had never reported to the Hokage, partly because that would entail revealing his interactions with the boy and partly because…
    Itachi had been one of his kohai. They had served on the same Anbu team. He hadn’t even realized the madness growing in the Uchiha boy until it was too late, and Tenzo didn’t think he’d ever forgive himself for that oversight. And while the Sandaime held his respect and loyalty, he did not hold Tenzo’s trust. Not when it came to prodigies —or his own Council—. Not when it came to a child who had run out into the grounds of his now-empty home and lain down to die. Who had been left here all alone amid the ghosts —he was sure Sandaime had his reasons, but Tenzo couldn’t see them no matter how hard he tried—.
    The hand patted his knee again and Sasuke-kun sat up, “I just said you were thinking too hard.” The boy tilted his head toward the yard, “Wanna train instead?”
    Tenzo considered, then nodded. If Sasuke-kun wanted to train with him, then why not?
    The eight year old bounded eagerly off the porch and into some warm ups while Tenzo followed at a slower pace. After a bit of stilted debate, they settled on a taijutsu match. No weapons or other jutsu —Tenzo wasn’t sure, but considering what day it was, he didn’t think Sasuke-kun actually felt up for sparring, but just wanted a distraction—.Tenzo let Sasuke-kun take the lead in the spar, twisting and blocking for a round before starting to retaliate. The official graduation age for students was thirteen now. After the repeated disasters that came from child prodigies, the Sandaime had finally forbidden early graduations. That didn’t stop the traitorous thought from worming through Tenzo’s mind as he sparred with Sasuke-kun.
    Sasuke-kun could already be a genin if the graduation age limit wasn’t in place. He was good enough for it. He needed some polishing that the Academy hadn’t gotten around to, but there was a talent there, a feral sort of instinct that was going to be terrifying when it was honed. Sasuke-kun fought with the innate reactions and instincts of someone who had already seen the battlefield, like he already knew how far he could push his body to hit his limits and then how far he could break those limits down. His form was strange, the Academy standard was only a sprinkling, a trace mixed in with the much stronger mishmash of techniques Tenzo had taught him and some kind of very acrobatic style that Tenzo had never seen. Possibly one that Sasuke-kun had made up based on memories of seeing Uchiha spars, or just his imagination. Tenzo wouldn’t put it past the boy. Under the unique style, and the sprinklings of ANBU kata and Academy standard, he could also see fragments of Hyuuga katas, no doubt subconsciously picked up from sparring with the clan heiress so often.
    All in all, it would make the boy a nightmare to fight when he grew up and graduated. That and his sealing talent, and Tenzo pitied whatever jounin instructor got assigned him.
I'm aware that this is pretty far in the future, but do you have any ideas/plans what will happen when Nyxuke finally meets Jiraiya and realizes that a) He's Naruto's Godfather and b) he pretty much abandoned him?
I do have some ideas yeah! He's gonna meet Jiraiya during the Chuunin exams of course. ...I don't remember if he'll met Jiraiya before or after Naruto does. But Nyxsuke uh.
Yeah Nyxsuke hates his guts.
He's loud, he's arrogant, he's perverted, he ignores his responsibilities until he has to, he stuck Naruto in a jar and weighted the top down-. There is a list of things Nyxsuke hates about him and it keeps getting longer. He doesn't trust Jiraiya as far as he can throw Hokage mountain and if he could he'd probably straight up shank him.
Naruto plays off Nyxsuke a lot because he trusts his judgement, so Jiraiya is going to have a much harder time. Naruto won't let this strange man just swan into his life and act like he's the gift of the gods to all mankind and then turn around and be perky and irresponsible.
That will only get worse when Nyxsuke learns this man was supposed to take care of Naruto.
Yeah I have nebulous plans for the fallout but it's not pretty. Nyxsuke isn't impressed with Ninja in general but Jiraiya has a special level of hatred and contempt reserved in Nyxsuke's heart just for him, right below Itachi.
