"people love otta but hate shuro. Tell me what the difference between them is quick!" Well the difference between them is that, besides Otta's supposed crimes not being actually relevant to the plot and none of the characters having an arc where they literally escape her ownership, the story does give us enough pieces of evidence to at least DOUBT whether Otta is actually guilty or not.

For starters, we know the elven justice system is extremely strict and doesn't care much for nuance (it doesn't matter if dark magic is used to destroy a country or heal a person: dark magic is dark magic and you will become an indentured servant for using it no matter what).

Second, we know that long lived races, but especially elves – the LONGEST lived race – barely consider people from short lived races to be independent adults capable of making their own decisions, to the point that people who get romantically involved with people from short lived races regularly get called pedophiles and groomers (or shotacon, for short lived race complex. I'm 100% serious)

Third, we know that Otta herself DOES consider short lived people to be fully fledged human beings capable of making their own decisions, so much so that she gets romantically involved with half-foot women (and gets accused of being a pedophile by other elves bc of it). The other elves imply that this is merely a physical attraction and Otta abandons her partners as soon as they turn 30, but honestly it is just as likely that half-foot middle aged women looking to settle down with, in their eyes, their long term partner simply aren't interested in continuing a relationship with a woman who still looks and acts like she's in her early 20s and who possibly sees them as no more than a fling. Otta herself said that the reason she can't keep a relationship going after her partner turns 30 is complicated (and we KNOW that 30 isn't exactly young for a half-foot. Chilchuck has 3 adult daughters and greying hair and he's not even 30 yet).

So, the story leaves us enough room to wonder: was Otta, one of the few elves that actually sees short lived races as fully fledged independent human beings, a short lived race trafficker, or was Otta, a member of a sexual minority who gets routinely accused of being a pedophile due to her sexual preferences and whose society barely recognizes her partners as being adults capable of making their own choices, framed by the extremely inflexible elven justice system for "taking advantage of innocent short lived races", aka having consensual relationships with other adults that are shunned by her society? We don't know whether either interpretation is true, but the story DOES let us think about it and doubt the official narrative.

Shuro meanwhile just straight up owns slaves. One of which (Tade) isn't even considered a human by him or his culture.
