Things I learned from this year’s Philcon:
-Phytomining is an area looking into using plants to mine minerals, including rare earth minerals, without poisoning the surrounding environment. Australia is apparently a leader in that research
-’Breaking the buck’ and how that trauma ties into homophobia in the Caribbean
-Time travel: Sci fi but it’s basically magic
-Professor evaluations at universities are apparently both useless and vital to how a professor is evaluated
-The guy who screenwrote Detective Pikachu was super excited to write a shared universe with friends who were less successful
-The Trials and Tribulations of writing in an existing canon when you’re paid to write a tie in and the person in charge of telling you what is and is not off limits changes (hint it means a lot of rewrites)
-Someone is attempting to make kosher pork via lab grown meat. I do not know enough about kosher rules to understand if that could in any way make it kosher.
-A lot of book recommendations
-Apparently Saudi Arabia is trying to use solar desalination plants to improve their environment

Philcon 2023 (Cherry Hill, NJ) was this past weekend. I was on five panels and assistant director for the masquerade.
One day, one con, I'll have decent photos of this costume.

The Hugo Awards At 69
The Hugo Awards At 69
Camestros Felapton has an interesting piece commenting on the The Hugo Book Club Blog’s attempts to change the rule that could eliminate a good handful of Fan-based categories and offers some sensible suggestions on how to go about doing so.
That, however, does not directly address the fact that 69 years have now elapsed since the notion of a one-off award was first rolled out at the 1953 Philcon…

Philcon 2020 is a virtual convention that will be running November 20 - 22 on a combination of Zoom and Discord. This year it is FREE TO ATTEND, although we do have a gofundme up to help cover our costs.
~
Philcon is the Philadelphia area's annual science fiction conference. The first of its kind in the United States, Philcon started out in 1936 as a literary-centric con, but has expanded over the years to include coverage of science & technology, performative media, comics & graphic novels, anime & animation, art, costuming, gaming, filk, and fandom issues. Philcon's programming features talks, panel discussions, demonstrations, workshops, readings, performances and other events focused on the content and creation of works in the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres.

Open Invitation to Philcon 2021
Live from Cherry Hill, New Jersey
Philcon postcard
To say the whole world had a crappy last two years is an understatement. Yet, fandom got hit hard. Covid-19 put a hold on most live conventions and events. Sad.
Who could we share our hobby with?
Granted, we adapted. We used technology. Science fiction fandom is high-tech. Nevertheless, virtual cons (even Philcon 84 was a virtual) were missing…
