The Indian Pitta (Pitta brachyura) is a passerine bird of the Pittadae family, native to the Indian subcontinent. This shy little bird is elegantly beautiful with a colourful appearance that gives it the Indian name ‘Navrang’ (Nine-coloured). The Indian Pitta is found from the foothills of the Himalayas to the Western ghats. It is often found foraging on the ground, looking for insects. Ranthambhor had a lot of these beauties.

May 25, 2021 - Indian Pitta (Pitta brachyura)
Breeding in parts of northern and central India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan, these pittas migrate to southwest India and Sri Lanka. Foraging on the forest floor, they capture their invertebrate prey in the leaf litter. They build globe-shaped nests with side entrances on the ground or on low branches from dry leaves and grass. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks. Although they are classified by the IUCN as a species of Least Concern, their population is thought to be decreasing due to habitat loss and hunting.

The Indian pitta (Pitta brachyura) gets its name from Telegu meaning "small bird" and it is called Arumani kuruvi or 6 o'clock bird in Tamil. It has a distinctive two note whistling call which is heard around 6AM and around 6PM. During migrations, the bird occasionally flies into people's homes.

Back Profile of Indian Pitta 💚💛💙 The back profile of Indian Pitta (Pitta brachyura) is different shades of green, a yellow & black cap, and a dark blue short tail. Indian Pitta is a small, stubby and shy bird inhabiting the scrubby and dense evergreen forest. It is locally called Navranga, meaning - the nine or multi-colored one. It has dark green upperparts, with a bright cobalt blue patch on the wing coverts, and buff-colored front (lower) parts; the lower belly and vent are bright scarlet red, and the short stubby tail is dark blue. Its legs are slightly longish & thin, yet strong; the stout bill is black; there is a thick black eye stripe, a buff-colored crown stripe, and black coronal stripes. Indeed it looks like God's cute & lively shade-card. Clicked on the outskirts of Indore on 23rd June 2019 with Nikon P1000. ~~~~~~ F/6.3, Exp: 1/500 sec, ISO 400, Spot Metering, FL: 288 mm (at Sirpur Lake) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0L9G3bgsfV/?igshid=n73l38pi18y4
