I normally wouldn’t even write up a TV movie like this, especially one based on a long absent series. But Andy Breckman and Randy Zisk revived their series with real skill. They didn’t treat the story like a reunion, though there are certainly reunions throughout. They really made a movie with the characters and made it feel like their lives had continued during the intervening 14 years. Sure it’s still mystery-lite in many ways, but Monk was never all that intense. It was always on the Murder She Wrote level of tension.

If you liked the original show at all, you do kinda have to see this follow-on. Personally, I stopped watching the original Monk after a while as it just got repetitive and the mysteries were so bad, but this one, for all of its self-acknowledged obviousness, really kinda works and was a fun distraction.
