Today (April 8) is The International Romani Day. The Romani people (also called Rromani, Romany, Roma) are Europe's largest ethnic minority with an estimated 10-14 million people, though knowing exact figures is hard because the Romani often live on the fringes of society and many Romani choose not to disclose their ethnic identity. The Romani are unique among peoples in the sense that they've never identified with any territory or claimed they have a homeland where they came from. Their origin was somewhat a mystery for a long time (the slur "gypsy" comes from Europeans thinking they came from Egypt) but later genetic research has traced their ancestry to northern India and more specifically to the casteless Dalits. The Romani arrived in southeastern Europe by the 1300s and in western Europe by the 1400s, and in modern times the live in every continent.
The Romani experience a very high level of discrimination and marginalization and are among the most persecuted groups of people in the world. The entire history of the Romani people has been filled with ostracization, deportations, slavery, and systematic abuse ranging from segregation to forced sterilizations. Anti-Romani sentiment reached its peak during the Holocaust when 25%-50% of the European Romani were killed in the genocide called Porajmos, and some countries' Romani populations were destroyed completely. After the war the communist Central and Eastern European states tried to forcibly assimilite and suppress their Roma populations. In the present day anti-romani racism continues to be extremely common, with the studies showing most Europeans (especially Eastern Europeans) have unfavorable views of Romani people, hate crimes against them being common, and many of them living in poverty and marginalized.
People have many misconceptions about the Romani that often trace all the way back to the Middle Ages. The Romani are often confused with other itinerant groups like Irish travellers which are culturally and ethnically a completely separate group. Despite being almost synonymous with the nomadic lifestyle most Romani nowadays are not migratory, and with those who are it's often not by choice but because of persecution or homelessness. Most Romani are Christians or Muslims and they don't usually practice witchcraft, and if they do it's never to try to curse of hex anyone. There is a prevailing conception that Romani are seductive and hypersexual despite that Romani communities tend to be fairly sexually conservative. Fetishization harms especially Roma women who are often victims of sexual violence. While it may be true that there's more crime among the Romani populations (there are conflicting studies about this) majority of Romani are not thiefs or otherwise criminals, and it's important to understand that the crime is a direct result of poverty and deprivation, with it often being almost impossible for the Romani people to get jobs or higher education and being generally rejected by the society around them. The Romani themselves are frequently victims of crime, for example being extremely overrepresentated among the trafficked people.
Despite all this, the Roma people have persisted for hundreds of years and managed to retain their culture and identity. The Romani populations around the world have very diverse cultures and traditions but have many similarities too. A very high value placed on the family and deep love that the Romani people have for each other is something i think has helped them to survive. Despite all the challenges i'm optimistic about the future and i believe that the Romani will continue to survive and things will get better even though it may take time.

Appleby Horse Fair!
Tumblr media
To this who have followed my blog for a while, it has been a while! So hello, and thank you for sticking around 😃.
For those who are new, my name is Izzy and I’m a Rroma woman wanted to educate people on all things Rroma. I focus mainly on educating those on Peaky Blinders misconceptions and fanfic writing tips, but also share things about my culture, about Rromani culture and share traditions.
This time of year is a big part of the year for many Rroma men and women in England as it’s officially the time of the Appleby Horse Fair!
The Appleby Horse Fair, also known as Appleby New Fair, is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers in the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland in Cumbria, England.
The horse fair is held each year in early June, attracting roughly 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers, about 1,000 caravans, several hundred horse-drawn vehicles, and about 30,000 visitors. The Gypsy and Traveller attendees include British Romanichal, Irish Travellers, Scottish Gypsy and Traveller groups, Kale (Welsh Romanies) and more!
My family is under the Romanichal section of this list, or if you’re English you’d know us better as Romany due to where we come from.
Appleby was given to us by King James (the second) of England in 1685 - supposedly - and by the 1900’s became a huge thing for English Travellers are it’s a time of year for us to come together, share our culture and even trade with a spit to the hand.
The Appleby Horse Fair, despite being a huge thing in Romani culture, isn’t shown in Peaky Blinders, and would be an amazing thing to show in fan fiction.
At Appleby, we have markets and history, where we see each other vardo’s and horses, tell people family stories and even make family tree connections! We like to call it a big family get together.
There are so many things I could delve into when it regard the Applyby Horse Fair, so let me know if you’re interested in knowing more about it ! 💗 (Even as an anonymous ask).
Much love to you all 👋

I globally agree with this, I think it's very well explained. Usually when people ask what makes someone Romani, one side will emphasize genetics, either to say "well if you've got even just one very distant ancestor, you are Romani" (bullshit) or "you MUST have both Romani parents to be Romani". The first example is usually pushed by racefakers online. The other side will emphasize culture and say that you must adhere to All The Traditions and Customs (which is not possible btw) and be fluent in the language. This narrative is usually pushed by traditionalists. So I like Florian's alternative here.
But. However.
I think Roma and especially Romani activists should be cautious when saying "you are Romani if you share Romani values, if you were raised with and practice Romani customs," etc. Because what does this mean for Romani women who were raised being told we had to get married and have children, we had to prioritize men over our education and career, we had to dress modestly and not challenge male authority? So many Romani women, and lesbians in particular, are being shunned by their Romani community because they don't conform to Romani culture. For a lot of Romani women, Romanipen means submission to men and oppression. It doesn't have to be that way and some aspects of Romani cultures aren't sexist, but as long as Romani men will be the ones to enforce cultural values and will be the ones in charge of all the structures of the community, Romanipen will be an antifeminist and reactionary concept.

I sent the ask about Tom kings vision series thanks for the response. I’m unfamiliar with the character so when I started reading it I had no expectations or context going in but I can see why it would be very unsatisfying for long time fans now lol. do you think you’re feelings on the story would be different if it took place at an earlier point in visions life? one that might make more sense?
Hello! I think maybe if Bob Harras was the one writing (Mr Harras for all his faults clearly had a big desire to fix what Byrne had done with Vision and did it well), it could make sense with like White Vision, but even then that would be in big conflict with Harras' later series, the 1994 Vision series. In that, an evil alternate universe version of Vision uses dreams of Wanda and Tommy and Billy to slowly manipulate Vision, because it's a massive trauma at that point Vision still hasn't worked through. And at the end of that, the ending statement seems to be that Vision can't let their past hold them back, and that they have to move on. They even have a self discovery road trip with Ultron and Jocasta about it.
Personally, I still think Ultron would make the most sense for that kind of narrative, especially at the point in time where Vision (2015) takes place; Ultron is literally wearing Hank's skin and pretending to be him. Ultron has built not one wife but two wives in the past, too, Jocasta and Alkhema by using the brainwaves of human women. He keeps making robot children too. If anyone would build a family in order to be percieved as human while being extremely creepy and unsettling about it, it's Ultron!
Like, Vision has shown a desire to be human, or at least having socially acceptable human qualities; being a white cishet man, for example, as shown when Vision dreams of themselves as a human ginger guy that one time, but that's not because that is what Vision ultimately wants, that's because Vision knows Wanda has suffered so much in her life already, being a Rromani mutant and thinks being the ideal American man and giving her an ideal American life would help. Obviously, this isn't what Wanda really wants, but Vision has been socialised exclusively in America so and also doesn't communicate so you know it's an understandable mishap. Point is, Vision's desire to be human has never come out of their own wants but instead of what they think is best at supporting Wanda, because Vision wants the best for her.
Ultron, on the other hand, I think has always wanted to be human and rejects them so violently because he can't have his wish. Like, you didn't love me so I'm going to kill you so nobody can have you kind of thing. He wants his father's love and acceptance, but can't accept that him trying to kill him 0.5 seconds after coming alive ruined that. He wants a wife in Jocasta, a child in Vision, but can't accept his horrible treatment of other people will always make anyone who can make their own decisions want to leave him.
Weirdly enough I think the best depiction of Vision not really wanting to be human but striving for it anyway because it's expected of them, and Ultron really genuinely wanting humanity comes from The Last Avengers Story, which as for most Peter David stuff has a few fantastic concepts but is mostly try-hard bullshit, but this moment really sticks with me.

having 1/24th rromani blood because your colonizer ancestors raped and genocided rroma women doesn’t make you automatically rroma too, or else half of all other white people would be considered rromani too 😂 you’re not special. either you were born in active rromani culture, or you weren’t. judging from the fact that you don’t know the first thing about rroma culture other than that you think it lets you say slurs for fun, it looks like you really weren’t born in this culture. stop making a fool of yourself and stop saying slurs just for the sake of it, it’s not a good look.
I literally took a Ancestry test and saw that???? I'm not into Roma culture, I'm Wiccan and practice Paganism

so I'm relistening to one of my favorite podcasts, kingkiller chronicles, where a group of people (re)read name of the wind and critique it. in the first episode they most talk about the author, patrick rothfuss. highlights so far
the host who likes his books the most reported that when she met him at an event, she asked him for writing advice. he looked at her and went "I'm patrick rothfuss. who are you?"
that time (admittedly quite a few years ago) he wore a shirt that said "joss whedon is my master now" I found the picture on his blog and you can too if you google it
the fact that his twitter profile is art of himself and his protagonist standing epically next to each other, which isn't even a bad thing but it's very funny. it's pretty clear his cool oc is his cool oc, and that's fine
what's not fine is the fact that his Rromani-inspired main character is apparently generically incliined towards being a genius musician and stealing
another host reported that he witnessed an author meet and greet during which rothfuss, standing 20 feet above his fans at the top of a staircase, asked them not to record him, and then proceeded to talk shit about tolkien for like 20 minutes
this...very bizarre essay he wrote about the new hobbit movie, which he wrote 10 years ago in fairness but he never took down or apologized for. it's like...I can't describe it you'll just have to read it for yourself. this is deranged. this man is incapable of being normal about women. I'm pasting the most relevant part of it under the cut because I need everyone to share my pain. Be ready for a really creepy description of a teenage girl, hatred for sex workers, and unmitigated misogyny
It will be a good movie. Maybe even a great movie. But it will also be, at best, a moderately okay adaptation of the subtle, sweet book that I grew up loving.
You know that it’s going to be like? It’s going to be like wandering onto an internet porn site and seeing a video of a girl I had a crush on in high school. You probably knew someone like her. The smart girl. The shy girl. The one who wore glasses and was a little socially awkward. The one who screwed up the curve in chemistry so you got an A- instead of an A.
She was a geek girl before anybody knew what a geek girl was. And that was kinda awesome, because you were a geek boy before being a geek was culturally acceptable.
You liked her because she was funny. And she was smart. And you could actually talk to her. And she read books.
And sure, she was girl-shaped, and that was cool. And she was cute, in an understated, freckly way. And sometimes you’d stare at her breasts when you were supposed to be paying attention in biology. But you were 16. You stared at everyone’s breasts back then.
And yeah, you had some fantasies about her, because, again, you were 16. But they were fairly modest fantasies about making out in the back of a car. Maybe you’d get to second base. Maybe you could steal third if you were lucky.
And maybe, just maybe, something delightful and terrifying might  happen. And yeah, it would probably be awkward and fumbling at times, but that’s okay because she’d be doing half the fumbling too. Because the only experience either one of you had was from books. And afterwards, if you make a Star Wars joke, you know she’ll get it, and she’ll laugh….
That’s the girl you fell in love with in high school. You didn’t have a crush on her because she was some simmering pool of molten sex. You loved her because she was subtle and sweet and smart and special.
So you stroll onto this porn site, and there she is. Except now she’s wearing a thong and a black leather halter top. She’s wearing fuck-me red lipstick and a lot of dark eye makeup. Her breasts are amazing now, proud and perfectly round.
Someone’s taught her to dance, and she does it well. She’s flexible and tan. She has a flat midriff and walks like a high-class Vegas stripper. Her eyes are dark and smouldering. She has a riding crop, and she likes to be tied up, and her too-red mouth forms a perfect circle as she sighs and moans, and tosses her head in a performance designed to win any number of academy awards….
And what’s the problem with this? Well… in some ways, nothing. What you’ve found is perfectly good porn. Maybe even great porn.
But in other ways the problem is blindingly obvious. This girl has nothing in common with your high-school crush except for her social security number. Everything you loved about her is gone.
We loved the sweet, shy, freckly girl. We still remember her name, and after all these years she lives close to our heart. Seeing her in lipstick and stiletto heels dancing on a pole is like watching Winnie the Pooh do heroin and then glass someone in a bar fight.
It just isn’t something that I look forward to seeing….
[Image of naked Frodo on a stripper pole. I am dead serious. Click the link to see it I don't want it on my blog]
And that’s how I’m going to feel when I watch the Hobbit.
I’ll be one part entertained, two parts nostalgic, two parts irritated, three parts outraged, and one part oddly titillated.
And I’ll watch it, and I’ll enjoy it, and afterwards I’ll go home and feel more than slightly sad….
pat

Would love it if otherwise pretty fun women-who-are-smarter-than-Sherlock-Holmes books didn't involve pretending to be/running away with Rromani people (and yall know that's not the word used in the books)

Rromani women and jewelry
@freelance7 asked:
Hello! I wanted to ask about what kinds of jewelry Romani women would wear? I don't trust looking it up because I feel like a lot of jewelry creators try to capitalize on what people think Romani women wear, instead of accurate depictions. Thank you for your time!
This highly depends on the subgroup of Romani people and their location; some subgroups have adopted the local customs, and some have not. In general, gold is very important (as is silver, to a lesser extent), and many women wear gold necklaces and earrings. In some subgroups, gold coins are worn, especially by brides at their weddings.
It would help if you determine which subgroup of Romani people your character is, and where they are living. This will help you to figure out what their jewelry might look like. Also, many - if not most - Romani women wear “modern” jewelry nowadays, so you don’t have to feel like traditional jewelry is the only way to go.

this romani man is so embarrassing
JK Rowling never said anything about Roma, none of her works share anti-Romani sentiment, no anti-Romani stereotype whatsoever, but ofc any opportunity to demonize a woman is a good one
This same guy made a tiktok months ago in which he supported Johnny Depp too, so I find it even more distasteful of him to demonize JKR, an actual victim of domestic violence and sexual assault
Also, none of his tiktoks, dedicated to romani issues, have ever discussed Romani women's rights. He never made any video to address Romani women's reproductive rights being taken away from us, Romani women being discriminated in hospitals, Romani women being pimped into sexual slavery, etc. And of course, acknowledging that Romani men are the first perpetrator of violence against Romani women (check the IPV and DV rates of Romani women, it's in my pinned post) will not make the cause look good i guess. By participating in the villification of (white) female survivors like Amber Heard and JKR, male romani activists are proving that they don't care about women's issues, including those that impact the majority of romani women
They are not our allies

Some of my fellow Europeans will say shit like 'So there's actually no concept of racial/ethnic prejudice here in Europe anymore, that's an American thing' and then literally seconds later, with zero self awareness, they'll also say 'Actually, anti-Rromani prejudice and mistreatment in Europe is justified because *insert cooked up story about how all the Rromani in their local area are thieves*' like................do you hear your fucking selves

If you're actually curious here's an article by a rromani person on the weighted and racist history of the g slur..... it's enough of a slur that after talking with rromani people a moth was renamed to not have the g slur in its name so you knowww. or like many rromani bloggers on this site have talked abt it being a slur this isn't a magical new opinion lol.
https://now.org/blog/the-g-word-isnt-for-you-how-gypsy-erases-romani-women/
I wouldn't know this because I'm not deep in Romani stuff

FORGOT A TITLE UHHH STOP READING SHITTY BOOKS
CW: misogyny, wh*rephobia, anti-Rromanyism
in the episode, a previously he/him host is now a he/they. so congratulations on the pronouns
they talked a lot about the magic system here which I barely remembered and didn't find very compelling
unlike the hosts I just don't care for magic systems that try to break your brain. I get the appeal but I like to understand things
our PhD candidate is very earnestly trying to connect a later scene of mass production of magic lamps to adam smith's theory of political economy. idk what he's talking about but the other hosts assure him PR isn't that clever
so like we said before our main guy is....every type of guy. and REALLY dramatic about it too
theater kid kvothe?
so he's an unreliable narrator, I guess?
hmm so yeah there's a lot here about wh*res and how horrible it is to be a sex worker and how a gentleman shouldn't call a wh*re a wh*re because "you don't want to remind them of how terrible their job is" even though they're still thinking about these women in this derogatory way? why can't you just treat these people respectfully because they're people?
also PR is apparently an epic atheist (TM) and religion plays a very minor role in this story
also there's a myth where a there's man who's abusing his unfaithful wife and it's treated like "oh they deserve each other because they're both doing bad things" ??????
so PR is an abuse apologist now ig along with being misogynistic and wh*rephobic and anti-Rromani AND according to what I remember vaguely homophobic as well?
HOW did this asshole get his reputation for being progressive again???
so anyway there's a ton of irrelevant lore that none of the hosts care about because it.s boring, none of the characters seem to believe it, and it literally never comes back so it seems pointless
also, NONE of the things kvothe bragged about in his intro speech ever happen in these books? I'm taking it on faith but I don't think any of them do which means book 3 is going to have a LOT of work to do
one of the hosts posited the idea last episode that PR doesn't seem to understand the concept of character development bc 1. none of his characters in this story seem to undergo genuine change or self-reflection and 2. in his goodreads reviews apparently he's always saying shit like 'hmm, most mysterious how this character started one way and then ended up a different way"
one of the hosts described this book is a fine pinterest board or a really nice tumblr gifset but it has no actual....story
so the women in this section. kvothe's unnamed mother and the sexy contortionist. doing great pat
also kvothe's dad apparently seduced his mom, who is not originally a member of their tribe...okay leaning into some other stereotypes I see
the hosts conclude that women exist (go queen) but they only exist...so men can love them
DOES PR know they're people? difficult to tell
a note: when the chronicler came in initially to be like "oh you I want your story" and he said no the guy was like "I heard...there was a woman involved" and apparently kvothe went sicko mode and in the end was like FINE I SHALL TELL YOU MY TALE
this isn't original, obviously, but it's not even original to redhaired fantasy protagonists of the last 20 years. this is literally a watered-down version of how rand al'thor acts because he's incapable of being normal about women
I remember reading this book and being very creeped out by the objectifying way all the men in the inn would talk about women
so there's some disabled kids in the city with him on the streets which is interesting to one of the hosts because you don't see that a lot but nothing really was done with them so like many things in these books they're just there for the sake of...being there
one of the girls gets her own spinoff book. and its title...now tell me this, whoever's reading. what does the phrase "The Slow Regard of Silent Things" mean to you?
honestly I like how it flows and I'm not opposed to using unusual adjective/noun combinations, but this doesn't really say anything concrete so much as give me a vibe of...reflection. this is a hallmark of PR's writing, where there's not many concrete things explicitly described but more often just the general energy to it. this isn't a bad thing, but I'm not reading that book and i have no plans to. it sounds very...transparent, like there won't be much to it.
but like, he goes on and on about storytelling so much that he never actually tells a story. like he's so up his own ass about how clever he's being that he doesn't actually accomplish anything
oh also this dude our mc who's telling his life story, he's only like in his early to mid twenties. which is actually quite hilarious and a detail I find genuinely interesting. so apparently he was this great legendary figure and did all this stuff and he retired at 22 to be depressed and run a bar? I mean. mood. that's great
anyhow I guess he has this old mentor who's teaching him stuff back before his family was attacked? super original pat 🙄 the wise mentor is a staple of western fantasy. not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's annoying after hearing him talk about how this is such a totally unique story when it is SO generic is so many ways
so in his backstory, our legendary mc's family entire was murdered, he spent some time along in the woods, he came to the city and immediately became a street urchin, and then he went to magic school and was so genius and good at everything, prompting one of the hosts to observe that he "has every single backstory an adventure/fantasy protagonist could possible have"
hm...you know who has a backstory just like that and is also an unparalleled genius and legendary figure who left the world in his early 20s and who is also full of himself and who also has killer monologues about himself and whose character arc is also rife with romantic tragedy and who's also a musician and who also has a sick title the world knows him by and WHO ALSO showed up his teacher in a supernatural-adjacent school? that's right! mfing!!!! wei wuxian babey!!!
but unlike kvothe here he doesn't fucking suck because he's well written and his story has actual themes and a plot and he undergoes character development and has real relationships with people
in conclusion
watch the untamed
