Vodafone Group Plc has won an international arbitration case against the Indian government in a $2 billion tax dispute, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. An international arbitration tribunal in The Hague ruled that India’s imposition of a tax liability on Vodafone, as well as interest and penalties, were in a breach of an investment treaty agreement between India and the Netherlands, one of the sources said. The tribunal, in its ruling, said the government must cease seeking the dues from Vodafone and should also pay 4.3 million pounds ($5.47 million) to the company as partial compensation for its legal costs, the source said.Vodafone and India’s finance ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 1. They may only be in it for a paycheck
What started off as some extra cash on the side for bloggers, has now turned into a full-time job for some popular figures. Many earn thousands of dollars per post, depending on reach, audience, and notoriety. While there is the potential for great payoffs through this avenue of marketing, be aware that some influencers are sadly only in it for the money.
One relevant, and rather humorous, example comes from one highly influential celebrity, Oprah Winfrey. During the Christmas season, Oprah frequently releases her “favorite things” list in her magazine or on social media. She partnered with Microsoft to promote the new Surface tablet, and part of their marketing strategy included a sponsored tweet praising the product. However, her followers quickly noted that while she expressed her love of the PC product, the tweet was actually coming from an iPad.
While not every influencer is simply in it for a check, you should understand that they are paid to promote your product or service, so this doesn’t necessarily make them a fan. When selling any sort of product, shoddy social proof is one of the biggest mistakes you can make.
To make sure you have authentic social proof, you could choose to use brand ambassadors, who generally need to meet a number goals in order to get paid. This can mean selling a certain amount of products, making X number of appearances, increasing the audience reach by X amount, etc. While brand ambassadors can be popular figures, their purpose is typically that of a regular employee. Therefore, they need to exhibit a degree of passion and personal connection with the brand.
For example, Indian jewelry retail startup Bluestone recently appointed Bollywood actress, Alia Bhatt, as their first brand ambassador. This choice not only helps to promote Bluestone’s expansive catalogue, it also works to compliment Bhatt’s personal style and further her own personal brand.
2. They may not stay in line with your content strategy
While you may have a vision in mind for your marketing campaign, your influencer may not have that same picture. Always be sure that every instruction you send to your influencer is extremely clear, otherwise, you could be in for some major (and embarrassing) mishaps.
For instance, sending influencers pre-written captions allows you to have more control over the campaign. However, if your influencer is known for a certain style of writing, using someone else’s words can backfire. Some are even so careless they forget to check what they are supposed to post – like Scott Disick’s post in collaboration with Bootea protein shakes.
While you can certainly be open to your influencer’s ideas, it is important that you agree on a mutual level of creative control before the content is published. Make sure that every picture, video, and caption align with your overall strategy. Enforce a clear communication system between your marketing team and your influencer, and ALWAYS proofread a post before it goes live.
3. They increase the likelihood of a scandal
One of the biggest fails of influencer marketing was the Fyre Festival earlier this year. Tickets for this much publicized “luxury” music festival in the Bahamas ranged from $450-$12,000. However, visitors were in for a rude surprise.
The accommodations were leftover disaster relief tents, and the main acts, such as Blink 182, had canceled. The festival turned into complete chaos as people struggled to just to get off the island.
One of the biggest knocks against the event was that it used a handful of big-name Instagram models such Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, Elsa Hosk, and more to build hype. In the end, many of these women’s loyal fans did not just feel betrayed by Fyre’ Festival’s organizers, they felt betrayed by the models themselves. In turn, a huge fallacy within influencer marketing was exposed to a widespread audience and the credibility of social media stars was put in question.
4. They may alienate your customers
Influencer marketing is great for honing in a more focused target audience. Just beware, partnering with certain accounts may actually disconnect your brand from a wider pool of customers for good.
For instance, Under Armour partnered with Tom Brady, the New England Patriots quarterback, who was also an investor in the athletic wear company, back in 2010. Brady has been a proud promoter for the brand, and social media is just one of the various avenues he uses to endorse them.
As a professional athlete, Brady makes a great fit for the brand. However, he is the star player for one of America’s most hated teams, which has been a dominant force in the league for the past two decades. They have also been under fire for a number of cheating accusations during that time. So, while many fans are extremely loyal to them, nearly every other NFL team considers the Patriots as the face of evil in the football world. With an endorsement from the team’s top player, Under Armour has certainly lost some customers whose loyalties now lie elsewhere.
Of course, this example is rather light-hearted, but there are certainly more divisive influencers whose strong political or religious affiliations can quickly alienate large segments of your target audience. Before you dive into a deal with an influencer, make sure that doing so won’t cause other target audiences to disconnect.

Supreme Court on Thursday said that the bank accounts which were not termed as Non-Performing Asset (NPA) till August 31 will not be declared as NPA till disposal of this case and defers the hearing to September 10.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told banks in a meeting today to put in place a loan restructuring scheme for rescuing all viable business units affected by the Covid-19 pandemic by September 15.
“During her interaction, the Finance Minister focused on lenders immediately putting in place board-approved policy for resolution, identifying eligible borrowers and reaching out to them and quick implementation of a sustained resolution plan by lenders for revival of every viable business,” the finance ministry said in a statement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver a special keynote address at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum's (USISPF's) 3rd annual leadership summit today. The Prime Minister will address the summit at 9 pm through a video conference. India has banned 118 more apps said to be either based in or linked to China. PUBG Mobile, Alipay, and Baidu are among the biggest names on the list. India had earlier banned TikTok, WeChat, and more than 50 other China-based apps in June, suggesting they were a security issue. This comes amid the escalating tensions between India and China over an ongoing border dispute.

The decision was taken by a Bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, R Subhash Reddy, and M R Shah, who were hearing pleas seeking an extension of the moratorium on loan repayments in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Court will continue its hearing in the case on September 10.
The decision came two days after the Centre and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) informed the Court that the moratorium on repayment of loans could be extendable to up to two years under certain conditions, and that sectors most distressed by the economic slowdown were being identified. The RBI had announced a moratorium on repayment of loans on March 27 to provide some relief to people as Covid-induced nationwide lockdown forced many companies to close down or effect major pay cuts. Announced for a three-month period initially, the moratorium was extended for another three months on May 23. The order had permitted lending institutions to grant a moratorium on payment of all term-loan instalments, including interest, falling due between March 1 and August 31. READ MORE...

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will address the press conference at 3 pm on 41st Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council meeting which was held today via video conferencing in New Delhi.
FM Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the meeting, which was also attended by Anurag Thakur, Minister of State (MoS) for Finance, finance ministers of various states and Union Territories (UT) and senior officers from the Union Government and states. Opposition-ruled states had united to pressure the Centre to give them the promised compensation for loss of revenue arising from the implementation of GST.
Meanwhile, the shareholders of Tata Sons — the unlisted holding company of Tata Group — will get a glimpse of the group’s digital strategy today during the company’s annual general meeting (AGM).
The e-AGM comes at a time when the group is facing significant challenges in each of its businesses.

Shares of Bombay Dyeing and Manufacturng Company tanked 7.4 per cent to Rs 63.45 on the BSE on Wednesday after the company's consolidated March quarter profit plunged 96 per cent year-on-year to Rs 48.63 crore. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 1,253.37 crore in the year-ago quarter.
For fiscal year 2019-20, the company's net profit declined 73.26 per cent to Rs 328.85 crore from Rs 1,230.11 crore in previous year. Net profit margin in Q4FY20 was at 15.51 per cent, the company said in a statement.
Revenue from operation declined 88.76 per cent to Rs 313.10 crore during the quarter under review, as against Rs 2,786.36 crore reported in the corresponding quarter of last fiscal. For the fiscal year 2020, revenue from operations slipped 57.22 per cent to Rs 1,894.62 crore comapred with Rs 4,429.76 crore posted in 2018-19.
Besides, EBITDA came in negative at Rs 24.81 crore in March 2020, down 101.79 per cent YoY, from Rs 1,389.80 crore in March 2019.
The company recommended a dividend of Rs. 0.20 (20 Paise Only) per equity share of Rs 2 each for the financial year ended March 31, 2020.
At 10:08 am, the stock was trading 6.35 per cent lower at Rs 64.2 on the BSE, as against a 75 points, or 0.22 per cent, rise in the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex. A combined 1.57 million shares have changed hands on the counter on the NSE and BSE till the time of writing of this report. So far in financial year 2020-2021 (FY21), the stock price has surged 50 per cent from a level of Rs 45.8 to Rs 68.55 till June 9. In comparison, the Sensex has advanced 15.2 per cent.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) building in Mumbai. (Photo: Bloomberg/ Dhiraj Singh) Indian equity markets fluctuated between gains and losses in a volatile session on Monday as weakness in metals and FMCG stocks offset rally in HDFC Bank and Infosys.
The S&P BSE Sense was flat around 31,560 levels. Among individual stocks, HDFC Bank jumped 5 per cent after a 2.5 per cent growth in its pre-tax profit in the March quarter. Besides, Infosys also gained 2 per cent ahead of its results later in the day. The broader Nifty50 index hovered around 9,260 levels.
Sectorally, the trend was mixed. Nifty PSU Bank index surged over 5 per cent while Nifty FMCG index dipped 1 per cent. Aviation stocks also declined after government prohibited airlines to book tickets till further notice.

01:03 PM Covid-19 impact: India Inc confidence index lowest since 2008 crisis Confidence index of India Inc fell to the lowest level in the fourth quarter of 2019-20 due to the situations created by Covid-19, according to a survey done by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry. The index fell to 42.9 in the quarter, against 59 in the previous quarter. It had stood at 37.8 in the second quarter of 2008-09, when India saw ripple effects of the global financial crisis. The index comprises current conditions index and expectations index both of which saw sharp decline.

Twenty eight-year-old Mohammad Javed, driver of a truck carrying LPG cylinders, has been stranded at the Hubli checkpost since Tuesday afternoon without food, water or any hope. The policemen posted at the border would not allow him to cross over as the COVID-19 lockdown is to be followed stringently.
Javed is among some 500,000 drivers and helpers left high and dry across the many state borders, estimates made by the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT) suggest. Trucks, even the ones carrying essential goods, are not being allowed to move following the government orders to seal the borders and check posts.
“I started from Mangalore at 4 am today and have been at the border check post of Hubli since 1 pm. The police officers stationed here are not allowing me to go ahead and they thrash me when I request them to let me go. They are not even willing to talk. I have been surviving only on water and even that is over,” he says, adding there are at least 25 to 30 trucks loaded with LPG cylinders which are marooned in that area.

Suresh Khosla, partner at Shri Anand Transport Agency, which employs Javed, says he’s in touch with the Federation of Bombay Motor Transport Operators for the release of the trucks on an urgent basis. His company is into transporting essential bulk commodities, but it’s a challenge to continue with the business as all entry points to Maharashtra have been shut due to coronavirus, Khosla points out.

With all the ancillary automobile shops being shut, vehicle repair is not possible and one cannot get the vehicles back on the road. Not surprisingly, the family members of the drivers are concerned and want them home.
Balmalkit Singh, chairman of All Indian Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), believes the movement of goods would be severely impacted.
Meanwhile, there’s been a ripple effect with the plight of the hapless drivers stuck at the borders reaching their co-workers. They are now refusing to report to work, says Singh. “With no food or requisite infrastructure in sight, they don’t want to leave home.” The delays are also because of the confusion regarding what is essential and what’s non-essential, he adds. “Everything has come to a standstill,” he added.
“There is a large exodus of drivers from the loading points. They are rushing home. Some 250,000 to 300,000 drivers have already left for their native places after handing over the keys to their owners,” says SP Singh, senior fellow at IFTRT. All these trucks are carrying high-value items and the drivers cannot afford to leave them unattended. “We have been asking the government for a bailout package. Owners are not able to help in anyway. They (drivers) are facing a lot of hardship. Most of them are not on the payrolls of the transporters and are on minimum wages,” Singh tells Business Standard.
Following a rapid rise in the coronavirus cases and the countrywide lockdown, demand for all staples and essentials has hit the supply chain snag and manufacturers of various goods are scrambling to keep pace.
