Not-very-spoilery thoughts on the movie release of Pillar Training (+SSV conclusion)

Behind a cut anyway just in case!

--Very nice to hear familiar background music brought back--Yuukaku themes when Uzui & his wives appear, Mitsuri's "Koi Kogare" BGM when she has a good batch of lines, Giyuu's BGM as he's like, "bye"

--I am very happy with the new OP, both sound and imagery-wise.

--One very short clip in particular made me, a fanfic writer, very very happy, but then there was more gratuitous focus that reminded me of another one of my best fanfics. The rewards of writing fic as closely based on canon as I could get them gives me the satisfaction of feel liking like canon-based imagery honors my fics by extension.

--Speaking of imagery in general, Ufotable is finding lots of ways to try to harp on the idea that everyone's wishes to destroy demons find their accumulation in Tanjiro, the Sun Breath user and first person in centuries to unlock the Mark. It is perhaps a little clumsy at times, but hey, that's a theme I like in this series.

--I was sad that Suma sounded so different, and had to look up afterward if she still had the same seiyuu. She does, but I think they might have given her totally different vocal direction so that she wouldn't sound too similar to Mitsuri

--Japanese crowds tend to be very quiet at movie theaters, but people could not contain their giggles at many of Mitsuri's lines

--I had the honor of sitting next to a huuuuuuuge fangirl who before the moving was saying stuff to her friends like, "(Hanae) Natsuki-san was at USJ the other day, and since it's a VR ride, you know, you have to wear the goggles, and I think, what if I wear the pair that he wore??? You know?? Our faces??? Would be so close?????" and then at the review of previous seasons at the beginning of the show, she started crying the instant the Mugen Ressha part started. Not loud crying, but crying.

--You can tell everyone was waiting for the "welcome back" scene, and although I thought Zenitsu would steal the show in that scene, it was indeed Nezuko. In the seiyuu greeting that was broadcast across all Japanese theaters on the opening day, Shimono-san noted that he thinks the audio was turned down on his performance of that scene. I think it was probably was too.

--So much happy daily life in this episode. If you have any friends who complained about last year's theater showing being a let-down because it was just regular anime episodes instead of a Mugen Train style movie, please tell them to just sit this one out and spare us their complaints. Most of this showing was just Tanjiro having a nice time after having a panic attack over Nezuko (oh, and like, killing Upper Moon Four, that too).

--Shinobu's hair seems distinctly longer. Giyuu's hair seems distinctly fluffier.

--Ufotable has put a lot of touches into humanizing Amane

--I wish Ufotable would stop trying to drive the "Zenitsu thinks Aoi is happy to see him (just because Aoi is a girl)" point. First off, yes, Zenitsu being a creep to girls is played up a bit in the anime. Second, the first fanbook states that the only kind of girl who is not so much his type is the Aoi-type.

--Also, on the promo art, I like the design they gave Shinobu's sword, but that's ignoring the fact that the four engraved kanji characters are on either side. Go ahead, Ufotable, hire me as your canon double-checker. EDIT: Oh wait, that is its sheath. Lovely, carry on.

--That said, the original filler they gave us? Gold star. Excellent. So happy with it. One... well, two tiny nitpicks that don't bother me much but stating it here would spoil it.

--One more non-spoilery thing to say about that filler: the people at Ufotable were probably like, "our fans are nerds. We already give them this, this, this, and that to nerd over. You know what else they are probably nerds for? Yeah. Let's give them that." Thank you, Ufotable. This nerd accepts and loved it.

--Tiny Nezuko filler as they set the stage talking about Muzan is probably looking for her? LOVE THAT TOUCH, at every level.

--Shinobu does have multiple goldfish, but they look a bit different?

--Genya's makes the best face in this whole episode

--Speaking of Genya, in the seiyuu greeting they had actors in big chibi costumes of the Kamaboko gang come out... PLUS GENYA. Giant chibi grumpy Genya was so, so, so, so freaking cute. Also, his seiyuu Okamoto got to join the stage with everybody and was talking about how he always used to scroll through his social media seeing the other seiyuu at KnY events and he was like, "sigh... sure looks like everyone is having fun..."

--Hanae Natsuki and his wife are big Genya fans, though, it seems

--Okamoto had a lot of trouble performing young Genya in the flashback, especially the emotional screaming. The desperation Genya always displays as he fights? That was Okamoto. --Meanwhile, Matsuoka always looks very overwhelmed at these things. I think having to embody the spirit of Inosuke terrifies him.

--IT WAS SO GOOD TO HEAR INOSUKE AGAIN

--Those actors in chibi costumes? The Zenitsu and Inosuke ones embodied them SO WELL. I don't usually care for those giant mascot character costumes, but these were legit so much fun to watch, like with Inosuke going right up into the cameras and Zenitsu trying to pull him back and then the two of them pushing and shoving. Zenitsu acting like he is being bullied and Inosuke showing off his muscles. I loved them. I am very sad that I will not be in town when they travel across Japan and come to my area.

--Also, the baritone voice of Oyakata-sama's personal crow? LOVED IT.

--Himejima at the the Pillar Meeting is such a statement. The new promotional material has a tag line that prominently uses one of the kanji in his name ("cry out"), and I feel like this is set-up for him to have a lot of impact later on in this season. Here's hoping!

--I am probably gonna go watch it again in a couple weeks, ufufufu

--Which is worth it for that KIZUNA NO KISEKI REMIX WHICH SOUNDED SO COOL IN SURROUND SOUND, OH MY GOSH

TNG Bridge Crew and how I imagine hugging them would be like

Picard: gives out one hug a year, it is a brief embrace with a clap on the back and then you are never allowed to speak of it again.

— Riker is usually the recipient of Picard’s annual hug, but only because he will push past people or make sure that nobody else remembers that it’s hug day to get it. Except for the one year after the Nova incident at Starfleet Academy, when he lets Wesley have the hug. The Boy needed it.

Riker: This. Man. Is. A. Hugger. It doesn’t matter if you’ve known him for ten minutes or ten years, the man is like Oprah with his hugs. “EVERYBODY GETS A HUUUUUUUG!” But honestly, with how much he cares about his crew, he is more than willing to give a hug to anyone who needs it (Deanna helps him determine which crew members both need a hug and would be receptive to them). And he gives the kind of hugs that squish your soul back into your body, and depending on the severity of the need for a hug he may add in anywhere from a gentle rocking from side to side or a kiss to the top of the head—with consent of course.

Data: fascinated by the concept of hugs and the physical and mental health benefits that they can provide. Has to be careful though. He once experimented by hugging Geordie and ended up bruising a couple of his ribs.

Deanna: is open to all forms of consensual physical affection. Thanks to her empathic abilities, she always knows who’s in need of a hug and how much they need it. And when she comes up to you and gives you that hug you so desperately need that you end up sobbing on her shoulder, she gently coaxes you to her office, and that’s how she gets you into therapy. Mental health matters y’all! Go to therapy.

Geordie: a hugger, but only with the people he knows really well. Definitely suffers from “nice guy” syndrome, but it’s not because he’s creepy, just autistic. What do you mean my offer of friendship was came across as a come on? How is watching ancient cartoons on the holodeck romantic? The people who do get to be on the receiving end of Geordie’s hugs say that they’re very nice, similar soul-squishing experience as Riker’s, just shorter and less frequent.

Beverly: similar to Geordie, she only hugs people she knows very well, because she strives to maintain an air or professionalism, since literally any crew member could wind up being a patient. Gives the typical mom hugs that usually accompany warm chocolate chip cookies straight out of the replicator.

Wesley: Wants Hugs. Needs Hugs. Deserves Hugs. Only gets hugs from his mom and maybe Riker. And Geordie one time. And of course, his singular Picard hug. But seriously, someone give Wesley hugs!

Worf: absolutely not a hugger. Worf values his personal space and will remind you of it if he even thinks you’re getting too close. But if he were a hugger, he would give the kind of hugs that lift you off your feet and crack your back.

Tasha: Given her upbringing, she is not a hugger and relatively touch-averse. But if she wants to show you affection, she will give your shoulders a gentle squeeze, accompanied with a nod of her head. Similar to a cat’s slow blink, you wouldn’t know it’s affection unless you know her, but if she does show it to you, consider yourselves lucky to be in her favor.

soft promotion but i usually write a little about what i:m currently reading in my end-of-month internet-sin paywall posts on substack -- but i:d also probably just tell you if asked;

any-ways, when i was really young i:d try to read a book-a-day both because 1) i had absolutely nothing to do 2) i thought that by reading as many classic/erudite texts as i could, that i:d become super smart; but i burnt out on reading because of these two things! and because of being burnt out, i have a huuuuuuuge amount of gratitude to the book version of "howl:s moving castle," because i think i picked it up on a whim (before the movie was out, even, i think), and read it, and it just made me fall in love with reading -- and the idea of reading for pleasure, instead of trying to make myself smart and cultured. was just so enamored with that book; read it through every period in HS and in that huge dullness i:d have afterschool (i slept out in a car from 2~7 typically; no friends and no where to go)--just couldn:t put it down, felt so real. zero idea if it holds up, and i refuse to re-read it, but i /loved/ that book and it:s always what comes to mind when someone asks me my favorite book (side-note: i thought the movie was trash; i don:t like ghibli stuff though).

inspirational stuff, though, i:ll use more recent examples! (mostly because it:s easier to remember this stuff); i really adore flannery o'connor and her short-story "the lame shall enter first" largely helped me deal with some of my obsessiveness at adhering to my behavioral etiquette 'perfectly' -- there are these two characters: an older atheist who is doing his very best to behave perfectly and empathetically and understandingly; & a crippled thieving rude christian boy that has fallen into the care of the prior character; any-who, the christian boy admits he has not been saved and that his soul belongs to satan, and tells the adult that he won:t bother being saved till he is ready to live whole-heartedly clean -- and that there is no point in attempting to act perfect (as the adult were trying) as no-one is perfect except christ; the story illustrates the lesson better, but it just made me loosen up on some of my behavioral rules and etiquette in regards to bacterial will and religious law. plus, flannery is a /beautiful/ writer.

then more briefly, i:d toss in cormac and shirley jackson -- cormac:s "outer dark" just really impressed me with how excellent he describes environments and just how /real/ he wrote "the three figures" towards the later half of that story, i love the outer dark so much; shirley jackson, too, just this month i read "we have always lived in the castle" and the maturity of her writers voice just struck me with how concisely bitter it were, and i just thought: wow, this is like the prototypical femcel hiki blueprint, and wow: this story is like the deconstructed magical girl genre before it ever existed, and as it could only exist in the mind of a shut-in agoraphobic american woman in her sixties (i think she was that old at the time of writing, i forget). i:m reading "the secret history" atm and also really loving that, because donna tartt is ace at pacing a story & capturing the feeling of "being left at a dorm for winter alone," and just scene/moments in general -- just super enjoying it :-)). then for more religious stuff that:d make people groan: i like LRH, and mary eddy baker, and ellen g white, and like reading all of them, and usually am left with a sparkling feeling after reading any.

How necessary do you think Kana's plan in Chapter 133 really is for Ruby to give an acceptable performance in the movie? Is Kana doing what has to be done, or are her self-sacrificing tendencies getting the better of her? What's the best approach to addressing Ruby's problems?

I don't think there's any way to say for sure until we see how things play out, but my feelings right now is that the answer is basically "yes, in both cases", at least as far as the story's internal logic goes.

The idea that Ruby isn't up to scratch in terms of portraying Ai is something that's been laid down for a good portion of the Movie arc, even if the story is a bit haphazard about actually, uh, properly communicating that properly. It would be one thing if this was just a case of Ruby's acting being kind of mid, but at least as far as the story is concerned, what's holding Ruby back is that she doesn't really understand Ai. She loves her mother more than anybody but she hasn't quite reached the point of being able to fully humanize and empathize with her as a person.

On top of the pressure for financial success for Strawberry Productions, Ruby makes it clear there are huuuuuuuge emotional stakes at play here - not just for her, but for her entire family. As she feels it, the completion of this movie will be the thing that allows her family closure of the trauma and tragedy that was Ai's death. Knowing just how much is riding on this movie - and Ruby's performance by extension - I can't say Kana's decision here is an entirely wrong one.

That said... this is totally Kana self-sacrificing again. It's a repeat of the behaviour we saw from her back during Sweet Today and Tokyo Blade, where she was willing to throw herself under the bus and focus on being the coordinator, looking at the supposed bigger picture over valuing herself and her own performance. We won't know the extent of it until the next chapter properly drops and we see how far this conflict goes and how it resolves, but while I do think this was at least partially necessary to give Ruby a push, Kana definitely went about it the way she did because she's so self sacrificing.

I have some more thoughts on the dastardly duo for you to consider...

1. The author v the writer. What a night mare for Moehringer! Who is known for his ability to write in the 'voice' of the person he is ghost writing for. Harry gave him absolutely nothing but chaotic thoughts and emotions, petty grievances and jealousy driven 'tall tales'. How do you write a coherent reflection without it sounding like the 'pisstake' or deranged Barbara Cartland written black comedy that it is.

2. This book has dumped Meg right in it. She was trying to impose a relationship with Catherine and intimidate. Meg was (and continues to be) a passive aggressive, manipulative, bitch who was completely threatened by Catherine and should have been shut down a long time ago.

3. No wonder William lost it. There is way more to that story that isn't told.

4. Megs 'Fantasy book' is going to be so much worse. I think it is already written. To be released/announced for publication around the time of the Coronation maybe...

5. I really hope the family maintains their dignified silence. But I think they need a massive PR exercise that highlights the many causes they have championed with personal reflections from people involved who worked with them. They should also at every opportunity go for a united family show of support. Lots of pics of the Senior royals, Wales, Tindals, Wessex's families together having a great time and engaging with the public. Emphasis on 'service, duty and loyalty with lots of QEII reflections. That for me is the only way to combat the crap hand they have been dealt from the dastardly duo and maintain their dignity.

The Spanish version is really bad for Moeheringer because the translations make the writing sound really bad. The English version may not be that bad. But, yes, Harry doesn't help either. It's hard to write a compelling conflict out of...lip gloss.

Meghan sound like All About Eve 2.0. The interactions with Kate are straight out of that movie. I'm really impressed by how composed Kate in all of their public interactions. Queen Kate has nerves of steel.

Oh, there's a lot we haven't been told. The merching, for example, has not come out and that is huuuuuuuge.

Apparently, she has been keeping a burn book. That's going to be interesting.

The coronation will be the pr exercise, and it will include all the content you list. Most importantly, it will have immense validation from institutions, world leaders, charities, celebrities, etc... That's what they need to focus on.

I told my teamate "I don't blame you for playing Lifeweaver, I blame Blizz for making his healing low and weird to switch to."

Yeah but for me the movement ability is also "Go, girl, give us nothing." Like I kind of get what they're going for in that it's probably more effective when used in combination with petal platform, but really it's so short that the little self-healing it provides doesn't account for all that much if you're pretty much still in Reaper's spread or any half-decent hitscan has a bead on you.

I think given the punch Thorn Volley has, and the more focus his kit has on team movement and placement, he's definitely been designed with being an off-Healer in mind, but also his hitbox feels huuuuuuuge and also the game itself has significantly been worked so that super-high mobility is the name of the game, so even if i'm throwing out a petal platform to get the Ana on my team to a nice little perch, I'm basically screwed when a Sojourn flanks. So there is a lot of potential for his kit and his applications in game, but we'll definitely be seeing him get tweaked as the season goes on.

That being said I would definitely amp up the healing charge ability to like... 80 if they don't come up with a more intuitive control for switching between thorns and healing. Like I play Mercy so having to consciously switch to my sidearm isn't really the end of the world, but she also has the mobility to make up for it. You find yourself in an enemy clusterfuck as Mercy and you can use GA + Superjump + Slow descent + GA again to give yourself some breathing room and decide whether to switch to your sidearm. LIfeWeaver, you step onto the petal platform to get out of an enemy clusterfuck and you're just... on the petal platform. You wanna dash? Sure you can dash, dash right off the platform and right back into the clusterfuck.

Still, just as well he's still new, I'm still kind of figuring out the timing with his kit, and utilizing the life grip in a way that isn't just saving my teammates, but may also give me some coverage with the shielding.
