he'd  been  pistol-whipped  —  an  assailant  had  come  up  behind  him  in  the  woods  &  bashed  him  so  hard  up  the  back  of  his  head  that  he'd  hit  the  ground  instantly.  he's  felt  worse  pains  —  sword  slashes,  gunshot  wounds  —  but  nothing  is  as  torturous  as  this:  a  throbbing,  hollow  pain  in  his  skull,  dull  enough  to  make  him  stubbornly  insist  he  can  get  up  &  enact  his  duties  as  a  general  (  he's  been  incapacitated  for  nearly  two  days,  now  —  he's  never  been  absent  for  so  long  before  ),  but  also  awful  enough  to  make  a  wave  of  nausea  wash  over  him  as  he  sits  up  from  his  infirmary  bed.  regardless  of  his  attempt  to  hide  the  way  he  sways  when  he  finally  stands  (  &  then  immediately  sits  back  down  again  ),  he  glares  when  he  feels  someone  approach  —  of  course,  one  of  his  protégé.  he  knows  he  looks  awful;  paled  complexion  &  sallow  features.  &  yet,  he's  stubborn  as ever.  "  i  am  fine,  "    he  insists  sternly,  already  predicting  their  concern  before  they  even  begin.   "  i  need  to  get  back  to  work. it was never any huge secret that santiago's birth had been unplanned, the child to a quickly wed young couple with religious families. the detail wouldn't have mattered if it hadn't resulted in the family feeling more like three strangers with little else than resentment towards each other. there was nothing extraordinarily remarkable about his childhood or how he was raised. if anything, it served as an early lesson that he could get by without much and could take care of himself.

now an adult, he intended to live his life just the same, mostly keeping to himself and doing his own thing, which he was able to keep up until he met isaiah. on paper they were an odd pairing with santiago being more aloof and pessimistic and isaiah being more outgoing and cheerful, but there was something about them together that just seemed to work and even bring out the best in each other. after a few years of close friendship, their relationship blossomed into something more before resulting in a happy marriage between the two.

it's hard not to wish that things would've carried on the way they were forever, but life had other plans. the outbreak happened and the whole world felt like it was flipped on its head. not everything completely changed though. isaiah was still isaiah which meant the pair was now accompanied by several others now, forming a sort of ragtag group that was just trying their best to survive now. their best wasn't always good enough though. sure, the group would grow in size from time to time as others in need of a hand joined, but it also went down in numbers whenever people would split off to look for their loved ones in a nearby city or would meet an unfortunate fate. life wasn't easy, but it wasn't until one night that it felt especially cruel.

about a year and a half following the outbreak, the conversation around the fire that night had landing on the topic of the infected and whether or not the person they once were remained somewhere inside for any amount of time. something about the topic seemed to upset isaiah who had already been acting strange that night, so santiago followed him when he got up to figure out what was wrong. it was then revealed that the other had been bitten earlier. what followed was a painful back and forth about what needed to be done and following through on that. naturally the commotion caught the attention of the rest of the group and upon learning what happened, they helped santiago bury isaiah.

he tried his best to stick with the group after that, but it was too much. the well-meaning looks of pity only hurt, so he set off on his own despite the pleas not to. it was a tiring life, but the worry of losing someone else was no longer present and he was convinced he was fine with keeping things that way. little did he know that things would change.

about another year and half passed when he crossed paths with them. the two strangers helped each other out in a rough spot and while santiago was fine with leaving things there, one good deed in a shitty world type of deal, it turned out the two were coincidentally headed to the same place. they both could have headed out on their own separate trips there, but ultimately agreed to travel together and loosely watch each other's backs, something santiago largely agreed to only because it sounded like something isaiah would have done.

upon reaching their destination, neither one found what they were looking for. unsure of what to do next, the duo ended up sticking together. if nothing else, another person made surviving a little easier. as more time went on though things slowly changed. they weren't just two strangers traveling together because they provided a better chance at survival, but because they had grown to care about each other and to see each other as family. naturally it caused the worry and fear of losing someone he cared about to came back.

that fear made the university seem perfect. there was a drastically lower chance that they would meet some awful fate there, so there was no argument about making it home. of course all serious incidents with nick harvey have called into question how safe things are here now, but it still remains safer than most places so he has no intentions of leaving, nor would he ever leave without them.

personality / headcanons !

he definitely does not voice it, but where he stands on closing the gates is actually the cause of a pretty painful internal conflict. he certainly leans more towards agreeing that they should remain closed for safety reasons — the whole reason he stays here is because it's safe. but oh boy, does he know it's something isaiah would be against because it means potentially turning away people who need help and he'd be lying if he said that doesn't eat at him.

but that's sort of an issue in general. sometimes things done for the sake of survival (his own or someone else's) didn't line up with the memory he wanted to honor and it's very much "whelp, it had to be done but i feel really really shitty about it!!"

even after five years here, he still makes it a chore to get to know him and is very slow to get close to others. his mindset is sort of like sure, they're safe and sound here but who knows, something awful could happen to the next person he gets close to :/

could probably count the number of times he's been relaxed in the last year on a single hand.

while he's usually very serious, he's not completely humorless. his humor is more on the sarcastic and dry side though so it's not always the easiest to tell when he's not being serious.

he still has his wedding ring, he just hasn't worn it since arriving on campus. it's just one of those things where it's easier to avoid the topic entirely than to even briefly get into it.

fellow guards: the dynamics will probably vary depending on y/m's personality, but i'm excited to explore those since i assume they're all somewhat familiar with each other!

some sort of friendship dynamic based off this: would probably have to be someone who has been around for a few years, but i think he would greatly benefit from a friend that kind of drags him out more, even if he's complaining the whole time.

misery loves company: not necessarily someone santiago would consider a friend, but there's some sort of mutual understanding that they can vent and confide in each other only to never bring up what they spoke about again.

former group members: people he was in that first group with before he took off on his own. while he would be relieved to see they made it somewhere safe, he'd be fairly avoidant of them due to the unpleasant memories their presence brings back.

slowburn romance: i could see it starting off as someone santiago just happens to be around enough times that a friendship started to slowly form and then from there romantic feelings started to develop as well. there might be some angst after the "oh shit, i have feelings for this person" moment, but i think it could develop into something really sweet.

In this world injuries became a pretty typical part of life. Bumps and bruises and scrapes, those were certainly a regular for Santiago anytime he stepped outside the walls of the Domus Spei. Those he would take to Miguel to dress and kiss better, no question; they were simply part of life.

But he didn't want to worry Miguel unnecessarily. The man worried enough as it was - and especially with the added threats beyond their borders and what had happened to that militia and hunting team in the too recent past...A bullet wound would undoubtedly worry him. And it was nothing, really, a graze along his ribs. Sure, it could've been so much worse - but it wasn't. It had not been a big thing. Hell, he'd hardly even felt it, just noticed after the encounter the slit in his shirt and the blood soaking the fabric that refused to stop bleeding.

It was nothing. He would keep telling himself it was nothing. But he was also, in a sense, going behind Miguel's back by seeking out someone else's help. But of course, he'd simply encountered another medic prior to encountering Miguel, and they were just as capable of taking care of it. Certainly he hadn't made extra attempts to avoid his husband. He grimaced at even the thought of making justifications. But it wouldn't be the first time.

"I hear you're stepping up from the medics," he says lightly when he spots Seo-joon among the med bays, eyes shifting to search the other faces as if perhaps expecting Miguel to still make an appearance around the corner even though he knows the other isn't meant to be on shift. "Congratulations."
