It’s a weird thing with Grani - the first welfare character of Arknights - because at this point she has four, count ‘em, four possible avenues for further story, but she’s so far just kind of. Popped up on odd occasions.
-Relation to Skadi (in particular being the bridge between Skadi and the rest of RI) and the Abyssal Hunters in more general terms -Relation to Mudrock and Infected in more general terms (via Big Bob, and a note in Mudrock’s profile) -Relation to Nearl(s) and Kazimierz in more general terms (clearly being mentored by Nearl in the first event; hangs out with Maria and reads a story with her) -Relation to Goldenglow and Bagpipe and Victoria in more general terms (A Light Spark In Darkness, her notable friendship with Bagpipe, and being a former member of the Victorian Mounted Police)
She’s genuinely got a lot of potential, and connections to a bunch of Arknights’ developing side storylines. But so far she seems to (aside from Light Spark, which is explicitly a prequel) be just hanging with everybody and being Friends with Everyone

would you consider irene the krillin of the abyssal hunters for: -human-scale power next to super soldiers -helps ground the hunters by portraying somebody who like knows Enough about what's going on to not feel like a fish out of water while still playing a key role -sees a fucked up and powerful girl and decides to risk it all against: -has not gotten a robot pregnant yet
The essence is there, but not it's not a 1:1, really. Krillin is immensely powerful for a human, but ultimately lags behind the Saiyans and Piccolo when it comes to actually handling enemies of import. Basically, Krillin's entire role after the power levels balloon out of his ballpark is being a good influence and sparring partner for Gohan (I think Krillin's role as Gohan's cool uncle is severely underrated, while I'm at it) until he's matured enough and to stall the villains by getting the shit beat out of him, buying precious time so a Saiyan or Piccolo can arrive on the scene, pop him a Senzu, and then take it from there.
Irene is a very strong fighter, and one quite easy to underestimate because, fundamentally, she's surrounded absolute beasts. In this way, yeah, she's very much a Krillin. I would also say that her style of fighting, involving accurate and crippling lunges with her rapier that incapacitate the enemy to set them up for her actual deathblow, her handcannon, can be seen as A Kienzan That Actually Lands.
Now, let's look at her RI assessment:
Tumblr media
This is consistent with what we saw in Stultifera Navis, though I'd say that her Combat Skill should be above Excellent. I base this on the fact that Irene was fighting things that made Abyssal Hunters have to put effort into engaging, and she wasn't just surviving, she was killing a good number of them and hanging in there in what was a VERY prolonged combat situation. Now, think back on the PV for Stultifera Navis: Skadi had to two hand her greatsword in order to defend and hold against Seaborn dogs' lunges, visibly having to push back at them. Skadi is also the person that, while holding back, was sending armed combatants flying Team Rocket style in Grani and the Knights' Treasure, and who was punching tunnels through mountains RE2 Mr. X style because she couldn't be bothered actually finding her way around the caves. If Skadi has to put in some elbow grease block the attacks of these basic Seaborn enemies, they would evaporate Irene just with one clean hit on her. In Stultifera Navis, Irene did the equivalent of running a 1 credit clear of a CAVE shmup, she REALLY went in and cleared Mushihimesama, secret boss and all, while not getting hit cleanly, because if she did, that's it, she was positively out.
That's a pretty big departure from Krillin if we're going to be very particular about this. Ace detectives will notice that Irene spent a long time fighting opponents she was woefully outclassed by physically by simply being that good and nimble of a fighter, which is in stark contrast to Krillin's signature move: Absorbing every single punch, kick and ki blast with his face while buying time for Goku to arrive. If Krillin isn't beat up, gored, exploded, or ragdolled, it wasn't a Krillin a fight. Krillin is like a Gmod dummy that people like to subject to creative torture via the gravity gun and the bonkers physics of Half-Life 2. Krillin was more likely to kill Nappa or Frieza via heart palpitations from them beating his ass TOO hard rather than landing the Kienzan. Krillin's most successful technique is the Taiyoken (Solar Flare), which he used to blind countless opponents temporarily so he could take a break from getting his face pummeled into 4-dimensional shapes for a couple minutes.
They share some essence, but in the nitty gritty of it all, they are different beasts in the same family tree, if you will. Also, the powerful girl very much did take the initiative in the case of Irene. I get what you mean and I respect it but it was very much the powerful girl that picked her up and called her a fruit.

Any 4/5* you feel that are stuck between their stronger 6* and their more efficient 3/4*? I really like using Executor, but I often feel like Pinecone/Chalter (for a lack of better words) invalidate him.
Oh boy do I have some candidates
Reed
Reed has the great misfortune of being both an early, experimental unit, and being part of the Charger vanguards. Here's the thing, nearly all the Chargers are objectively great units with their high ATK, fast attack speed, and ability to refund their original DP cost. However, the issue is that no one really uses them, with the exception of Bagpipe, who acts as the mighty servant of the vanguard goddess, Myrtle.
Whenever a Charger DOES get used for actually doing their intended job of picking off trash for easy DP, the 3 star Plume does a swell job, while 4 star Vigna is just straight up hitting above her weight class by combining a big ATK buff with a crit talent.
This has made 5 star Chargers very sad as they're stuck between not being bagpipe while not being nearly as efficient as Vigna, but Reed is ESPECIALLY sad because the other two 5 star Chargers are both Free operators, and better than her. Grani can block 2 while increasing her DEF to make her decently tanky, while Wild mane has redeployment CD reduction on her module and synergy with the Dubstep Polish Horses team, while Reed has.... RES, and an ASPD bonus if she takes Arts damage, when her gimmick is that she's the Charger with Arts damage (enemies that deal Arts are likely to have high RES).
Glaucus
Unlike poor Reed, Glaucus isn't notably weaker than the rest of her Decel Binder class, but just like poor Reed, she's a weird, experimental unit that is sandwiched between stronger and more efficient options, namely Podenco for the 4 star and Angelina and Suzuran for the 6 stars.
Podenco offers a lot of versatility for cheap investment. She can heal allies with her skill 1, or throw a poison vial that constantly slows and silences enemies inside its range, very useful in IS. Meanwhile, Angelina and Suzuran are Angelina and Suzuran.
Poor Glaucus specialized in being an anti-drone unit when many flying enemies stopped being drones, while all the actually dangerous drones were Arts drones that had RES and needed to be taken down by Marksmen. She's still not terrible if you want to use her (the AOE of her S2 is huge), but objectively speaking it's hard to justify her most of the time.
Franka
Until the advent of modules, Dreadnoughts suffered pretty badly from an opportunity cost issue: their 3 star Melantha was way too fucking strong for her rarity, and could do most of what you would use a Dreadnought for anyway, so why would you bother raising the rest? 6 star Skadi was maligned as the worst 6 star in the game for this reason (though she still had her uses as a very big stat stick now and then) until even sadder blue girl Mostima came about.
But then modules and their upgrades arrived, and Hypergryph decided if they were going to be obvious about being Bloodborne fans, then they might as well go all the way and made the Abyssal Hunter squad one of the most bullshit busted teams in the game, with Skadi receiving massive buffs both from the modules, the upgrade effects, and the upgrade effects of the other Abyssal Hunters. She's now very strong when part of the AH squad. Dreadnoughts also saw another stupidly strong unit join their ranks with Nearl the Radiant Knight, whose ability to ignore deployment limit has led to her even being called a cheat.
Meanwhile, Matoimaru's stock rose with the module upgrades, with the upgraded stats both giving her more base HP, while increasing the HP gained from her talent, leading to a very cheap operator with a truly gargantuan HP pool, and thus gave her a special niche away from Melantha as a raw HP tank.
Add that to True Damage becoming a real damage type in the game (Franka doesn't actually deal True Damage, she just ignores DEF instead, which is an important distinction now that phys damage reduction and phys evasion are both things that exist) and Franka already struggling to justify her existence when an entire subclass of guards do Arts damage which also ignores DEF, and she's just not having a good time. Her best use case is as a counter to enemies with low health but extremely high DEF and RES such as the Originiutants from Originium Dust, or Plastic Knight and his shielded groupies, but then, you can just use actual True Damage to get around that too.
But there's one last operator I have in mind. Someone truly sandwiched between a rock and a hard place
Mr Nothing
Poor, poor Nothing. There are only 3 Merchants in Arknights, with the 6 star being an incredibly powerful counter to stun mechanics, and the 4 star being one of the strongest operators in the whole game.
Nothing has... nothing... going for him. He has the very baffling trait of having a gacha roll for his S2, where you can randomly get one of three different effects and if you don't get the right one you need to turn it off and reroll, while his S1 makes him stop blocking entirely and take a nap.
His stun from his talent can be useful now and then, and some dedicated fans out there have definitely found ways to actually make Nothing do something, but out of all the units I've mentioned so far, no one's as sad as Mr. Nothing.

The 5 abyssal hunters for the ship meme
Oh boy. I feel like a lot of these will end up looking very similar because I ship a lot of them with each other so let's go
Skadidididididi
NOTP: Skadi x Ulpianus. Ulpianus is a clown and does not deserve romance.
BROTP: Skadi x Grani. Skadidi needs a friend and they were cute together in Grani's event.
OTP: Skadi x Specter. God, they're so good. They've been through so much together, and Skadi was so caring and attentive when Specter was being treated at Rhodes Island. Also, Specter's Outstanding durability means she's one of the few people Skadi can top without risk of injury.
Second choice pairing: Skadi x Doctor. Skadi's operator files indicate that she's a bit sweet on Doc, to say nothing of... the entirety of the Corrupting Heart. I think it'd be really cute to watch Skadi struggle to admit she cares for this fragile land-dweller and then finally allow herself to be close to someone and then dote on and be so very gentle with her easily-breakable wife/malewife (as applicable).
Fluffy pairing: Skadi x Doctor, Skadi x Grani. They would be so sweet together.
Angsty pairing: Skadi x Specter. Oh, there is so much potential for pain with these two.
Favorite poly ship: Skadi x Specter x Gladiia, Skadi x Specter x Gladiia x Doctor, Skadi x Specter x Gladiia x Irene. My reading on the Abyssal Hunters is that they aren't strictly monogamous (see: Specter's yuri moments with both Skadi and Irene and Skadi's simultaneous crush on the Doctor and yuri moments with Specter), and so I actually like Abyssal Hunter polycules more than 2-person ships. Love the thought of the three surviving Hunters finding solace in each other's arms on land.
Adding Doctor to the mix is super funny to me because all three of them express some level of regard for them (Skadi is pretty obviously crushing a bit, Gladiia invites them to dance and is rude to them when it's specifically noted that she saves politeness for the people she doesn't like, and even Specter likes to playfully tease them and Irene is a seagull, but she can still be stuffed like a turkey if she tries really hard and believes in herself.
Weirdest pairing: Skadi x Mudrock. Each of them is a bit of a space cadet, and Mudrock's shield passive means that as long as Skadi goes real slow, she can top Mudrock without harm.
Specter the Unhinged
NOTP: Specter x Amaia. Keep your filthy Seaborn-worshipping hands off my girl.
BROTP: Absolutely love the idea of Specter becoming Bros with the other brawlers/troublemakers at Rhodes Island. She probably hangs out at the bar/gym/etc. with Indra, Gavial, Lappland, and other people who cause problems on purpose.
OTP: Specter x Skadi. See above.
Second choice pairing: Specter x Irene, Specter x Doctor. Irene deserves to get railed and they had a bunch of Yuri Moments in Stultifera Navis and Specter does seem to have genuine regard for the Doctor, both promising to protect them and expressing a desire to share her home and its culture with them and lamenting that there are aspects of it they're incapable of understanding
Fluffy pairing: I feel like it's hard to do truly fluffy with Specter because she's too much of a brat, but Specter x Skadi and Specter x Irene could probably manage it.
Angsty pairing: Specter x Skadi. See above.
Favorite poly ship: Skadi x Specter x Gladiia, Skadi x Specter x Gladiia x Doctor, Skadi x Specter x Gladiia x Irene. See above.
Weirdest pairing: Specter x Lumen. Breed that twink, Laurentina.
Gladiia
NOTP: Gladiia x Kal'tsit. This is, honestly, an excellent pairing with a lot going for it, but I do not like Kal'tsit.
BROTP: Gladiia x Blemishine. Idk, I just really like the idea of Jaded Supersoldier Science Lady Gladiia taking this young, peppy engineering nerd under her wing.
OTP: Gladiia x Doctor. It would be Gladiia x Kal'tsit if I liked Kal'tsit because I do think the setup and chemistry is really good, but alas. That said, Doc x Gladiia has a decent foundation to it, what with the way Gladiia asks Doctor to dance with her and is generally somewhat abrupt and impolite with them when her files note that she reserves her manners for people she doesn't much care for. I feel like there's a good opportunity to bond over the nature of power and responsibility and leadership. Late nights discussing tactics or playing chess together that become something more? Yes, please.
Second choice pairing: Gladiia x Specter. Gladiia shows so much care for Specter, and somebody's gotta punish this bratty little shark.
Fluffy pairing: I'm not convinced Gladiia does fluffy, but I think Gladiia x Doc has some potential, given the talk line where she offers to teach the Doctor how to dance.
Angsty pairing: I feel like every Gladiia pairing is inherently angsty but I'll pick Gladiia x Ulpianus here because their interactions in Stultifera Navis get both funnier and more tragic if they yearn to explore each other's bodies.
Favorite poly ship: Skadi x Specter x Gladiia, Skadi x Specter x Gladiia x Doctor, Skadi x Specter x Gladiia x Irene. See above.
Weirdest pairing: Gladiia x Saria. Science parents unite!
Andreana
This is hard because the lore kinda forgot she existed but I'll try.
NOTP: I don't have a real NOTP for Andreana, but I think perhaps she should stay away from Jaye before she ends up being made into seafood.
BROTP: Andreana x Exusiai. They can shoot guns together.
OTP: Andreana x Incandescence
Second choice pairing: Andreana x any Abyssal Hunter.
Fluffy pairing: I want to say Andreana x Incandescence but they have no lore pain emoji
Angsty pairing: Hard to pick one here but all the Abyssal Hunters are pretty good at angst.
Favorite poly ship: Andreana x Abyssal Hunters. She deserves to be railed from three directions at once. As a treat.
Weirdest pairing: Andreana x Exusiai. Show her the power of GUN!
Ulpianus:
NOTP: All of them this man gets negative bitches he is utterly swagless he cannot have romance until he learns to fucking communicate like a normal person
BROTP: Ulpianus x The Last Knight go fight the ocean together boys
OTP: Gladiia x Ulpianus but strictly in the sense that she beats the shit out of him for being a dumbass and then maybe if he's very very good he gets pegged.
Second choice pairing: Bruh I can barely even come up with a first choice pairing but I guess it'd have to be Ulpianus x Mlynar
Fluffy pairing: This man is too much of a loser for fluff I think the closest he could get is like... Ulpianus x Skadi??? But I don't even like that one.
Angsty pairing: Any possible pairing will be incredibly angsty based on the fact that Ulpianus is in it but Ulpianus x Gladiia would probably make waves in this respect
Favorite poly ship: None there is no universe in which this man has enough game to pull two or more bad bitches at once.
That said, I'll go with Ulpianus x Mlynar x SilverAsh because all of them are shit at communicating and being emotionally available. Three of the most miserable bitchless losers on Terra.
Weirdest pairing: Ulpianus and the Last Knight. It gets lonely in the ocean, guys.

Okay so considering the end of Il Siracusano, I wanted to put together a list of floating plot threads that might lead to future events, just to get my brain in order. This will be a list of the events and characters involved, as well as a general summary of where things are in these plots in Global.
So, we have:
(Minor spoilers for a lot of Global under the cut, but specifically for some bits at the end of Il Siracusano)
- The main story, obviously, counting both Reunion and Dublinn/Kazdel stuff, as well as stuff like What the Firelight Casts and Vigilo. Not sure how relevant this will be to future side events because it’s already the main plot, but who knows.
- The Feranmut plotline, encompassing Ancient Forge(?)/Who is Real/Invitation to Wine/Where Vernal Winds will Never Blow, featuring Nian/Dusk/Ling/Chong Yue. Updated pretty regularly as the CN new year event. Haven’t been keeping up with this one so I can’t say where we are rn but we’re about to get Vernal Winds anyway so it doesn’t matter much. The short overview is that Yan used to be populated by godlike beings called Feranmuts. Feranmuts fought a war with people, which concluded when a Feranmut named Sui betrayed his people out of a selfish desire to be the only being with the kind of power that Feranmuts possess. When he was discovered, the emperor of Yan (China analogue) split him into 12 fragments which eventually developed their own identities and personalities - these are the Sui siblings, i.e. Nian, Dusk, Ling, Chong Yue, etc. Once all twelve of these siblings meet again, they will reform back into Sui and he will be reborn, and probably take over the world. As such, the current goal is to find a way to prevent the siblings from all waking up and getting back together, and hopefully finding a larger way to prevent Sui’s resurrection.
- Abyssal Hunters and Seaborn, with Grani and the Knight’s Treasure/Under Tides/Stultifera Navis/Mizuki and Caerula Arbor, featuring Skadi/Specter/Gladiia/Kal’tsit. Was updated pretty frequently as an anniversary event, but they seem to have thrown us a big lore dump with Caerula Arbor and left it at that for the time being, which is understandable. The state of the plot at the moment is the Abyssal hunters we have are back together, Specter is back to her old self, they’ve met Ulpian and established an uneasy truce with the Iberian (Spanish analogue) Inquisition, and we’re starting to understand just what Ishar-mla is. Iirc the alternate timelines we see in IS3 are actually shown to the Doctor by Mizuki, so that may play into future events as well.
- Kazimierz, with Maria Nearl/Pinus Sylvestris/Near Light/Obscure Wanderer, featuring Blemishine/Zofia/Nearl/The Followers/Flametail/Ashlock/Fartooth/Wildmane/Justice Knight my beloved/Młynar. This kinda shouldn’t be on this list, because it’s mostly wrapped up, and I don’t expect any more Kazimeirz events for a while. It’s still probably important to summarize though so: Margaret Nearl won the 24th Major and became the Grand Knight, and has since stayed in Kazimierz (Poland analogue) to improve living conditions for the infected and push back against the General Chamber of Commerce. The Armorless Union has mostly been decapitated - the Platinum defected, the Lazurites have disappeared and taken on new identities, and the Darksteel has promised to stay away from Margaret and Rhodes Island. Pinus Sylvestris and most of the rest of the Nearls are now on the landship, working for Rhodes Island.
- Rhine Lab, with Mansfield Break/Dorothy’s Vision/Lonetrail/the second Records of Originium comic (which has an official translation that you absolutely should read it’s really good), featuring Silence/Ptilopsis/Saria/Ifrit/Dorothy/Mulesyse/Ho’olheyak/Kirsten. This is one of the newer plotlines, and my personal favorite. Kirsten Wright, founder and head of Rhine lab, wants to go to space. Ever since her parents were killed in a plane crash, she’s looked at the stars as a goal for humanity and a symbol of the power that science and technology can give us. Unfortunately, in pursuit of that power, she believes the end justifies any means, and the Colombian (America analogue) military-industrial complex definitely isn’t helping things. Kirsten’s disregard of human rights has pushed away the people closest to her, most notably Saria, who left the company after discovering how Ifrit was abused. At the moment, the relationship between Rhodes Island and Rhine Lab is becoming more adversarial because we keep poaching their directors when they see the horrific human rights abuses that they’ve committed. Saria left after the Diαbolic incident, Dorothy left after site 359, and now the Doctor even has Mulesyse thinking about leaving. In addition to that, Saria has finally confronted Kristen and told her in no uncertain terms that she is done working with Rhine lab, which Kristen previously hadn’t fully accepted. Unfortunately, all this has only served to drive her deeper into “the ends justify the means” - rather than accept that she might have been wrong, she’s doubled down on the idea that if she can just achieve her goal and make it to space, they’ll all see how right she was and come back.
- Wolf Fangs, with some hints in the earlier chapters of the main story and being explicitly confirmed in Il Siracusano, featuring Texas/Lapland/Projekt Red/Lunacub. This is the newest of these plots, set up in Il Siracusano and presumably proceeding from there. The Feraerus are supernatural talking animals that we’ve encountered a couple of times throughout the story, like the High Priest or the Emperor. They are connected with the land and are almost akin to guardians of it. They don’t need Originium for their magic, and are tied to the setting in ways we don’t quite understand yet. More importantly to us, though, they’re involved in their own power struggles and contests among each other. This underscored the drama in Il Siracusano - the whole Bellone family was propped up by the wolf Feraerus Zarro as part of an ancient game in which the wolves pick champions, called Fangs, who fight each other in a Battle Royale to decide the pack’s next alpha(debunked study, I know, just roll with it). We know a couple of the fangs - Lunacub is one and Bernardo was another before his death, but Projekt Red is also a Fang, as well as Crownslayer’s mentor, so we’ll probably be coming back to this conflict in the future. Judging by Bernardo’s story and Lunacub’s files, the implication is that a lot of this story is going to revolve around breaking free of these old traditions and systems.
- The Sami Icefields haven’t technically gotten an event yet, besides that one story in Operational Intelligence, but I’m including it as an honorable mention because it looks like we’re going there for IS4. The Icefields are up north of Ursus, and they are terrifying. You remember the Emperor’s Blade, the one that kicks your ass in WD-8? Yeah we only see three of them in the game because the rest are busy fighting against the Eldritch demons constantly invading from the Sami Icefields. Let’s please never go there ever, thanks.
That’s all I can think of in terms of plotlines as of Il Siracusano in AK Global. If there’s anything I forgot or got wrong, tell me and I’ll add it in.

I started going through the “Grani and the Knights’ Treasure” Arknights side story because it’s a requirement for Skadi’s module. I was not expecting it to immediately introduce a character (Grani) who everyone assumes is a boy and has to clarify that she’s “a maiden on the inside.” I think this might be the closest thing to trans rep I’ve seen in Arknights

Any thoughts about Grani and Irene commiserating about those crazy Abyssal Hunters?
I can totally see Grani talking about how cool and nice they all are and poor little Irene looking at her in pure disdain thinking to herself, who has this little Kuranta talked to- There's NO way in hell those are the Abyssals she knows. Especially Skadi, that's not the Skadi she knows. The one Grani is talking about is totally someone else. So Irene keeps asking her about them, just wanting to see how different they all act in front of her. Poor Irene is left in shambles after their conversation is done and wonders if her life is a lie.
I can also definitely see them hanging out together from time to time, I do generally think Grani is one of Skadi's best friends and likes to drop by in her room, you know, give her a little slice of cake she's gotten from visiting Carol. Tell her all about her adventures as they eat and Skadi enjoying herself- Of course she won't outright admit it, she'll just tell her she's doing this as a just another way to return a "favor" of hers. We all know how Skadi is.
So Grani tells Irene all about those little afternoons the both of them have every once in a while and Irene is shocked. But she stills enjoys listening to Grani talk about the Abyssals, much to her dismay.
I could keep going about this but I think I've repeated myself enough as it stands and I'm late to work- So that's that. I would also love to see Grani and Irene hang out with the Abyssals all together, you know, eating some good old cake by Carol, listening to the Iberian music Irene has recommend them and the Abyssals dancing with them, enjoying their company.
Just another thought. Hehe.

Skadi's birthday moments always include something that makes it seem more scary than it really is.
Like her looming over a barely awake Grani at some untimely hour of the day, offering something for Grani to take before simply leaving.
She's most likely going off to hunt, something that needs to be done, but she did make time to give a little horse something nice.
Its a whistle, its a whistle that mimics some sounds of the Aegir tongue that most can't do themselves, and that most can't even hear.
But now Grani has this little whistle, and with the right tune, with the instructions provided, she can 'sing' the words 'Thank you' in Aegir tongue. Its mostly just a hum of the words being said, but its a start.
Grani seriously wasn't sure for a moment whether Skadi's shadow was Skadi or the Skadi-Shaped Sleep Paralysis Demon again, but the presence of a gift left behind pointed signs to the former.
Tumblr media
"I wish she could stay around more," Grani murmured to herself, looking at the whistle in her hand. But she smiled all the same, a little small smile.
She may never truly know Skadi's language herself... But this could help.
Later that day, after the party (Skadi's absence noted, but excused by Grani's insistence), Grani headed to Rhodes Island's top decks. The sea could be seen off in the distance, just barely, off the port side.
Tumblr media
"Well, Skadi -- I hope you hear this...!"
Tumblr media
It was a low hum, just enough for Grani to hear it. For Aegir it was probably horrifically mangled. But it was, nonetheless... Grani's thank you to Skadi. For everything she's brought to Grani's life; both good or ill, Grani cherishes it indeed.

I saw a post talking about Grani/Skadi so now it’s on my mind
I still really like Skadi and Grani’s dynamic, Grani even has a line about her. I was super happy to see Grani show up in a light spark in darkness, though I’d enjoy seeing her show up a bit more, she was one of my early faves along with Skadi
The real thing we need though, is to complete the set by getting an event that has Gladiia saddled with an enthusiastic/idealistic younger fighter since Skadi has Grani and Laurentina has Irene, characters that have their own stories sure, but also serve as a “normal” foil to show how beyond fucked up the Hunters are
Give the swordfish her own Fruit

The part of me that still cares about Arknights died a little bit when I read a post talking about shipping with Skadi, and it described Skadi paired up with Grani as a ‘crack ship’, man, I wish the game gave Grani a bit more prominence
it feels so weird to see Grani having popped up as much as she has, but always in like, really minor roles (even the prequel story she does show up in and have a real part to play), almost never interacting with the same character twice
to the degree that the person she’s closest to in the entire setting is now labelled a ‘crack ship’, because that other character has been in a bunch of other roles with Grani wholly absent

Do you have any expectations/hopes for Ulpian when he shows up next UT event? both personality and kit wise
(Bonus question: Do you think HG will ever let Andreana actively participate in the UT storyline? bc otherwise idk why they gave her the AH buff)
If Gladiia and Laurentina are anything to go by, and by that I mean the way they are very close and how it's clear each has rubbed off on the other, I'm expecting something similar with Ulpianus and Skadi. She was pretty happy to see him alive, and after that, she stops referring to Gladiia as "Captain" and instead calls her "Captain of the 2nd", while using "my captain" to refer to Ulpianus.
From Gladiia, we already know he is also a Consul, and sure enough, the similarities with Skadi are immediately noticeable: Just like Skadi could've resolved basically 80% of Grani and the Knight's Treasure by Just Talking About It, Ulpianus definitely could've been more communicative about why the Hunters must not return to Aegir, and what's going on with the Seaborn.
If I know his type, and going from how Skadi is, the guy is probably a hardass with a sweet interior, likely pretty awkward with interpersonal relations, and preferring to keep everything business.
In terms of kit, I'm hoping to see some absolute gorilla shit, some crouching-in-corner-with-an-invincible-flash-kick-and-a-projectile unga bunga shit where you active his S3 and he just goes bananas with ASPD and increased range and some other funky effect. I also fully expect him to have some sort of skill that drops his defense or makes him take more damage and makes him hit harder than god, because otherwise that anchor blade he's wielding is WASTED on him. I want to see gorilla shit desperately.

Shipping Skadi?
Didi Didi Didi Didi Didi Didi Didi!
Skadi x Doctor is my first choice for this one. Her profile makes it pretty clear she's got a bit of a thing for Doc: her trust 200 profile entry suggests that the Doctor should be in charge of her and take care of her needs if you know what I mean and the person recording it seems to have used the Doctor's name as a way to get Skadi to open up, while a number of her talk lines can read as pretty shippy. Those talk lines involve her going from telling Doctor to stay away from her (out of fear for their safety, she admits this directly in the very first talk line on her list) to offering to let them touch her hair, which the Doctor apparently thinks is "long and beautiful". She describes misfortune befalling the Doctor as "trouble for [her] too". She encourages the Doctor to buy her a drink, offers to take them to see her home someday, and swears to defend them with all her might.
"Kind, compassionate, person with limited comparative aptitude in combat melts the heart of stoic, badass, violent lone wolf warrior" is hardly a new romantic storyline by any means, but I find the way at least partially reverses the typical gender roles in such a tale (and reverses them entirely if you view the Doctor as male) by making the tough ultraviolent badass a woman and the softer, kinder partner potentially a man. I like this type of dynamic a lot, probably because I think women who could kick my ass are hot. The only problem is that Skadi needs to be very careful to keep from breaking poor Doc in the bedroom.
Skadi x Specter: While this one apparently gets elaborated on a bit in later events, I think what we've gotten in the global release is already quite compelling. Skadi has demonstrated a willingness to go to great lengths for Specter's sake multiple times (her actions in Grani and the Knights' Treasure, chasing after Specter and Gladiia in Under Tides) and one of her talk lines specifically has her request that the Doctor help Specter. Also, sane Specter is a little brat who needs to get railed, and is also probably one of the few beings on Terra who has the Outstanding durability needed to withstand the force of "Unquantifiable Superstrength" Skadi's mighty hips.
Skadi x Specter x Gladiia: Similar to the above, except now Specter has reinforcements in the form of a swordfish MILF, which means Skadi is the one getting bullied now.
Skadi x Specter x Gladiia x Doctor: Three jocks (one of whom is also a nerd) ganging up on a poor helpless ("helpless", Doc has plenty of ways of potentially turning the tables through their cunning and allies) landlubber nerd, yes please! Not even (too much of a) crackship since all three of the Abyssal Hunters have lines that can be read as shippy with Doc, though Gladiia hides ("hides") it under a generally unpleasant and standoffish demeanor. The trio is very careful with their fragile little brainiac surface-dwelling (male)wife and think it's adorable that Doc needs their protection, though Gladiia will usually scoff at the idea and will only admit its truth deep within her heart of hearts.
Skadi x Specter x Gladiia x Adreanna: Adreanna can have three hot underwater girlfriends. As a treat.
As for the crackships/friendships, I think matching Skadi up with any of Rhodes Island's sweethearts (the kind, friendly characters without a mean bone in their bodies - think Bagpipe, Grani, Saileach, Exusiai, etc.) creates a funny and interesting dynamic as Skadi tries desperately not to become attached to someone who is just determined to be friends with her (and everyone else). Grani gets special mention here because they have an established dynamic from Grani's event.
I could also see Skadi sharing drinks with Schwarz, Blaze, and the other operators known to frequent Rhodes Island's bar. We know from Schwarz's profile that she can sometimes be seen "accompanying mercenaries and bounty hunters at the bar", and Blaze is obviously a heavy drinker and a heavy fighter. While they may not quite be on Skadi's level by any means, they're still elite combatants by Terran standards, and I think Skadi would respect that.

Arknights is rarely content to have two people be shippable together with no additional ships. Grani and Carol are cute, but Grani and Skadi are also cute, but Skadi and Specter are cute, but Andreana wants Skadi and Specter to step on her. Or you could ship Lappland with Texas, but you could also ship Texas with Exusiai, who could be shipped with Mostima, but then there are people who ship Mostima with Bison, and I don’t even know how Fiammeta fits into all that. Saria made it easier by torpedoing her relationships with both Silence and Kirsten, but think of poor Ptilopsis (who still has shippy potential for both Saria and Silence) or even Muelsyse (who seems like she’d like to be the devil on Saria’s shoulder.) I think the least complicated shipping is Blemishine and Platinum, and that’s only because everyone else falls in love with Blemishine’s sister.

I’m trying out SSS seriously for the first time.

And I kind of like that this tutorial stage has Big Bob, Grani, and Skadi. It’s like Grani’s event all over again.
