NASA completes last OSIRIS-REx test before asteroid sample delivery
A team led by NASA in Utah's West Desert is in the final stages of preparing for the arrival of the first U.S. asteroid sample—slated to land on Earth in September.
A mockup of NASA's OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer) sample capsule was dropped Wednesday from an aircraft and landed at the drop zone at the Department of Defense's Utah Test and Training Range in the desert outside Salt Lake City. This was part of the mission's final major test prior to arrival of the actual capsule on Sept. 24 with its sample of asteroid Bennu, collected in space almost three years ago.
"We are now mere weeks away from receiving a piece of solar system history on Earth, and this successful drop test ensures we're ready," said Nicola Fox, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. "Pristine material from asteroid Bennu will help shed light on the formation of our solar system 4.5 billion years ago, and perhaps even on how life on Earth began."
This drop test follows a series of earlier rehearsals—capsule recovery, spacecraft engineering operations, and sample curation procedures—conducted earlier this spring and summer.
Now, with less than four weeks until the spacecraft's arrival, the OSIRIS-REx team is nearing the end of rehearsals and ready for the actual delivery.

It’s been another great year at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley. Join us as we review some of the highlights of the science, engineering, and innovation from 2023. Announcing a New Innovation Hub Planned for NASA Research Park at Ames NASA Berkeley Space Center is a proposed new campus of the University of California, Berkeley, and an innovation hub for research and advances in astronautics, aeronautics, quantum computing, climate studies, and more. Planning to join Ames as a tenant of our NASA Research Park in Silicon Valley, the new campus aims to bring together researchers from the private sector, academia, and the government to tackle the complex scientific, technological, and societal issues facing our world. Mapping Water Distribution on the Moon’s South Pole NASA Using data collected by the now-retired Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), researchers shared the first detailed, wide-area map of water distribution on the Moon. Understanding how much water lies beneath the lunar surface, and how it’s distributed, will help guide future missions like VIPER, as well as prospective sites for human habitats. Colliding Moons May Have Formed Saturn’s Rings NASA New research suggests Saturn’s icy moons and rings were formed by a collision a few hundred million years ago, creating debris that gathered into the planet’s dusty, icy rings or clumped together to form moons. NASA and Airlines Partner to Save Fuel and Reduce Delays NASA/James Blair This year, NASA partnered with five major U.S. airlines on an air traffic decision-making tool that saved more than 24,000 pounds of jet fuel in 2022 for flights departing from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport. Partners include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines. NASA Leaders View Climate Science, Wildfire Innovations at Ames NASA/Dominic Hart NASA’s top leadership, industry experts, and legislative officials visited Ames in April to learn about about the center’s climate science efforts and innovations in aeronautics that will help scientists and engineers better understand climate change and mitigate natural disasters like wildland fires. You can track mission milestones via the Small Satellite Missions blog, and follow the mission live in NASA’s Eyes on the Solar System 3D visualization. NASA’s First Robotic Moon Rover NASA/Robert Markowitz This year engineers began assembling NASA’s first robotic Moon rover, VIPER — short for the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover — and the agency is giving the public a front row seat to watch along as the rover takes shape. While individual components, such as the rover’s science instruments, lights, and wheels, were assembled and tested, the VIPER team also completed software development, mission planning, and tricky tests of the rover’s ability to drive off the Astrobotic Griffin lunar lander and onto the lunar surface. Bringing Home Ancient Space Rocks NASA/Keegan Barber NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission – short for the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer – returned to Earth in Sept. 2023, bringing with it extraterrestrial rocks and dust that it scooped up from an asteroid estimated to be 4.5 billion years old. Ames contributed to the spacecraft’s heat shield, anti-contamination systems, post-landing sample curation, and more. Preparing to Send Yeast to the Moon’s Surface for Astronaut Health NASA/Dominic Hart NASA’s plans to explore the Moon and eventually go to Mars will bring humans deeper into space for longer duration missions than ever before. These extended missions beyond low Earth orbit pose certain health risks to astronauts. The Lunar Explorer Instrument for Space Biology Applications team is preparing an experiment to study yeast’s biological response to the lunar environment to help understand and mitigate health risks for astronauts. X-59 Team Moves Toward First Flight in 2024 Lockheed Martin/Gary Tice This year, NASA’s X-59 team installed the finishing touches to the aircraft’s tail structure and moved it from its assembly facility to the flight line to perform structural testing. The X-59 quiet supersonic aircraft will take its first flight in 2024. Celebrating a Stellar Year for Webb Telescope Science NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, and S. Crowe (University of Virginia) The James Webb Space Telescope’s Near-Infrared Camera instrument produced a feast for the eyes with a view into a star-forming region, named Sagittarius C, in the heart of the Milky Way. The image reveals a portion of the dense center of our galaxy in unprecedented detail, including never-before-seen features astronomers have yet to explain. Supercomputer Simulations Lead to Air and Space Innovations NASA Simulations and models developed using technology at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Facility (NAS) help researchers and engineers develop innovations in air and space. Modeling turbofan engines could lead to designs that reduce engine noise and improve efficiency by understanding where noise is generated inside the machine. S-MODE Sails the Seas and Soars through the Sky NASA/Avery Snyder The Sub-Mesoscale Ocean Dynamics Experiment (S-MODE) logged its final field expedition, and they took a team from the TODAY Show along for the ride. S-MODE combined airborne instruments, research ships, and autonomous ocean gliders to get an unprecedented look at how gas and heat exchange at the ocean’s surface impacts Earth’s climate. From Intern to Astronaut, and Back to Ames NASA/Dominic Hart NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins, who was once an intern at Ames, returned to the Bay Area in Feb. 2023 to visit with local elementary schools and speak with Ames employees. Watkins started her career with NASA at Ames, where she conducted research on Mars soil simulant supporting the Phoenix Mars Lander mission. Second Gentleman Joins East Bay Kids for STEM Activities NASA/Dominic Hart Nearly 100 East Bay kids and their families got to experience the thrill of “launching a rocket” and “making clouds” at a fun-filled STEM event hosted in honor of Women’s History Month at the East Oakland Youth Development Center in Oakland, California, in March 2023. Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, NASA Ames Research Center Director Dr. Eugene Tu, and NASA astronaut Dr. Yvonne Cagle joined kids at the Manzanita Community School for hands-on activities and to distribute approximately 500 STEM Artemis Learning Lunchboxes aimed to inspire the Artemis generation to learn about NASA’s Artemis Program. Top Leaders in Our Midst Hailed from the White House and Australia NASA/Dominic Hart In January, U.S. President Joe Biden landed at Moffett Federal Airfield, at Ames, on his way to visit storm-damaged regions in the state. Research conducted at our Silicon Valley center could help predict extreme climate-related weather events. Later in the spring, Vice President Kamala Harris arrived at Moffett before delivering remarks at a local company, and leaders of the Australian Space Agency visited Ames to learn about the center’s missions supporting NASA’s Artemis program, including the VIPER Moon rover, which will launch to the lunar South Pole in late 2024.

USAF Department program launch of the seventh mission of the X-37B spacecraft
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/09/2023 - 17:00in Space
The U.S. Air Force Office of Rapid Capabilities Department, in partnership with the United States Space Force, is scheduled to launch the seventh mission of the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle on December 7, 2023 from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
Mission 7 of the X-37B will be launched for the first time on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, designated USSF-52, with a wide range of test and experimentation objectives. These tests include the operation of the reusable space plane in new orbital regimes, the experimentation of future space domain recognition technologies and the investigation of the effects of radiation on materials provided by NASA.
"We are excited to expand the range of the X-37B's reusable capabilities, using the flight-proven service module and the Falcon Heavy rocket to perform several cutting-edge experiments for the Air Force Department and its partners," said Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Fritschen, Director of the X-37B Program.
Tumblr media
The X-37B Mission 7, also known as OTV-7, will expand the United States Space Force's knowledge of the space environment, experimenting with future space domain recognition technologies. These tests are essential to ensure safe, stable and secure operations in space for all domain users.
Head of Space Operations, General B. Chance Saltzman hailed these experiments as "innovators," saying: "The X-37B continues to equip the United States with the knowledge to improve current and future space operations. Mission 7 of the X-37B demonstrates the commitment of the USSF to innovation and the definition of the art of the possible in the space domain."
The NASA experiment on board will expose plant seeds to the hostile radiation environment of long-term spaceflight. Known as "Seeds-2", the experiment will be based on the success of previous experiments, paving the way for future manned space missions.
Tumblr media
Previously, Mission 6 of the X-37B was the first mission to introduce a service module that expanded the capabilities of the spacecraft and allowed it to host more experiments than any of the previous missions. The spacecraft carried the experiment of the Photovoltaic Radio Frequency Antenna Module of the Naval Research Laboratory, which transformed solar energy into radio frequency microwave energy, and two NASA experiments to study the results of radiation and other spatial effects on a sample plate of materials and seeds used to grow food. Mission 6 of the X-37B also deployed the FalconSat-8, a small satellite developed by the U.S. Air Force Academy and sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory.
The Director of DAF RCO, William D. Bailey praised the collaborative partnership with the industry, noting: “The X-37B government and Boeing teams worked together to produce a more agile, flexible and adaptive experimentation platform. The work they have done to streamline processes and adapt evolving technologies will help our nation learn a lot about how to operate and return from a space environment."

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
November 2, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
NOV 3, 2023
In a speech yesterday in Northfield, Minnesota, President Joe Biden explained his economic vision to rural Americans. “Over the past 40 years or so, we’ve had a practice in America—an economic practice called trickle-down economics, and it hit rural America especially hard,” he said. “It hollowed out Main Street, telling farmers the only path to success was to get big or get out.” At the same time, he said, “[t]ax cuts for big corporations encouraged companies to grow bigger and bigger, move jobs and production overseas for cheaper labor, and undercut local small businesses. Meat-producing companies and the retail grocery chains consolidated, leaving farmers [and] ranchers with few choices about where to sell their products, reducing their bargaining power. Corporations that sell seed, fertilizer, and even farm equipment used their outsized market power to change farmers and charge them and ranchers unfair prices.”
Biden noted that the U.S. has lost more than 400,000 family farms in the past 40 years, an area of more than 140 million acres of farmland, equivalent to an area the size of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota combined. Family farms have failed, and as they did so, small businesses, hospitals, schools, and communities also suffered.
Young people feel they have no choice but to leave home “in search of good-paying jobs and a chance at the American Dream.”
Biden explained that his plan to invest in America would create new and better markets and new income streams to help rural areas thrive. He noted that $20 billion of the Inflation Reduction Act will go to helping farmers and ranchers adjust to climate change by changing cover crops and managing nutrients and grazing, while urging farmers to diversify from single crops and sell in local markets.
Biden emphasized that the administration is promoting competition in agricultural markets, noting that currently just four big corporations control more than half the market in beef, pork, and poultry. If just one of their processing plants goes offline, it can cause massive supply chain disruptions (as the closing of a baby formula plant did in 2022). “[T]here’s something wrong,” he said, “when just 7% of the American farms get nearly 90% of the farm income.”
In addition to the existing national investments in power grids and broadband that will help rural communities, Biden announced $1 billion to fix aging rural infrastructure systems like electricity, water, and waste water systems that haven’t been updated in decades; $2 billion to help farmers fight climate change; $145 million for clean energy technologies like solar panels that will help lower electric bills; and $274 million for rural high-speed internet expansion.
The administration’s vision for rural America appears to be part of a larger vision for restoring competition to the U.S. economy and thus is closely tied to the administration’s push to break up monopolies. In July 2021, Biden promised to interpret antitrust laws in the way they had been understood traditionally, not as the U.S. government began to interpret them in the 1980s. Then, following the argument advanced by the solicitor general of the United States at the time, Robert Bork, the government concluded that economic consolidation was fine so long as it promoted economic efficiencies that, at least in the short term, cut costs for consumers.
Biden vowed to return to the traditional understanding of antitrust principles championed by presidents all the way back to Theodore Roosevelt at the turn of the last century, arguing that protecting economic competition protects workers, promotes innovation, and keeps consumer prices down. To that, the coronavirus pandemic added an awareness of the need to protect supply chains.
“Bidenomics is just another way of saying ‘the American Dream,’” Biden said. “Forty years ago, trickle-down economics limited the dream to those at the top. But I believe every American willing to work hard should be able to get a job, no matter where they live—in the heartland, in small towns—to raise their kids on a good paycheck and keep their roots where they grew up.”
In contrast to Biden’s outreach to farmers, House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is facing a dilemma over the nation’s next farm bill, which must be passed by the end of the year. According to Clark Merrefield of The Journalist’s Resource, Congress usually debates and renews the farm bill every five years, and the last one passed in 2018.
Farm bills include price support for farm products, especially corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, rice, peanuts, dairy, and sugar. It also includes crop insurance, conservation programs, and a wide variety of other agricultural programs, making the farm bill hugely popular in rural areas that focus on farming.
Also included in the measure are nutritional programs for low-income Americans, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps. SNAP serves 41 million low-income Americans, but as a member of the far-right Republican Study Committee, Johnson called for cutting SNAP benefits. Now his far-right colleagues are echoing his position, saying that the need to renew the farm bill is a great opportunity to make significant cuts to SNAP, especially since the farm bill is expected to bear a price tag of more than $1 trillion for the first time in our history.
“I can’t imagine the Mike Johnson that we know would pass up the opportunity to secure as many conservative wins as possible in this farm bill,” a Republican aide told Meredith Lee Hill of Politico, “[a]nd that means serious SNAP reforms.”
But even some Republicans—primarily those who hail from agricultural states—object to loading the farm bill up with the poison pill of SNAP cuts, knowing such a tactic would repel Democrats, whose votes will be necessary to pass the measure as far-right Republicans balk.
It will take a deft hand to get the measure through Congress, and its failure at Johnson’s hands will infuriate hard-hit rural areas. It is one more thing to add to the new speaker’s to-do list, as the deadline for funding the government is looming. The continuing resolution funding the government at 2023 levels, the measure that cost Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) his speakership, expires in just over two weeks, on November 17.
Johnson’s willingness to load bills with poison pills that his conference likes showed today in the House’s passage of Republicans’ aid bill for Israel—Ukraine aid had been cut away—along with dramatic cuts to funding the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a provision that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office warned would add to the deficit rather than reducing it. Knowing that the measure will not pass the Senate, a number of Democrats voted for it, likely to avoid attacks from conservative opponents.
Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) says the Senate won’t even take up the House bill. Instead, the Senate continues to work on its own strongly bipartisan bill that ties together aid to Israel and Ukraine.
As Kate Riga of Talking Points Memo put it, if the Senate continues to work in this bipartisan way, we will continue to see the same pattern we’ve seen throughout this Congress: “Senate Democrats, Senate Republicans and House Democrats all supporting more or less the same thing, with a chunk of House Republicans out on a branch alone.”
After an angry fight last night over Senator Tommy Tuberville’s (R-AL) holds on military promotions, in which Republican senators joined Democrats in confronting him, the Senate today confirmed General David Allvin to be Air Force chief of staff and Admiral Lisa Franchetti as chief of naval operations, by votes of 95 to 1. Franchetti is the first woman to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Wednesday’s fight appears to have been prompted by the hospitalization of acting Marines Commandant General Eric Smith after an apparent heart attack. Smith was holding down two high-level positions at once owing to Tuberville’s holds, and he had warned his schedule was “not sustainable.” Although the Pentagon says Tuberville is endangering national security, Tuberville insists that his hold on almost 400 military promotions is not hurting the military.
The new additions mean there are no vacancies on the Joint Chiefs of Staff for the first time since July.

Keeping Kids Safe From Gun Accidents: 6 Strategies For Families
A Nasa probe sent to gather rock from an asteroid a number of hundred million kilometres from Earth has grabbed so much that samples are spilling out. Officials behind the Osiris-Rex probe, which landed on Bennu earlier this week, say the collection operation could have performed too well. Pictures beamed back to Earth present a rock has wedged open the door of a container and a fraction of the pattern is leaking, Nasa says. Nasa is now trying to stow it safely. The craft is believed to have collected some 400g (14oz) of fragments, he stated. The probe couldn't have executed better, he added. Thomas Zurbuchen, Nasa's associate administrator for science, told reporters as the space company focuses on ensuring no more is misplaced. The collection container will now be stowed throughout the spacecraft, which means it won't be attainable to measure exactly how much sample has been taken. Osiris-Rex touched down on Tuesday on 500m-extensive Bennu, some 320 million kilometres (200 million miles) from Earth. It kicked up debris and mud when it took the samples from the asteroid's floor. Mr Dante stated on Tuesday. Scientists hope the mission will throw gentle on how the Solar System started 4.5 billion years ago, once the samples are examined when the spacecraft returns dwelling in 2023. Asteroids include debris from the formation of the Solar System. The spacecraft launched in 2016 and begins its journey back to Earth next March.
Gun violence statistics within the U.S. Firearm-associated accidents are the number one trigger of demise for youths within the U.S. The U.S. has experienced more than 300 school shootings. Black Americans are three times extra doubtless than white Americans to be shot by police. Black youngsters expertise neighborhood Orbi Gun violence at four occasions that of white youngsters. Mass shootings-notably school shootings-occur at alarming rates within the United States. According to the World Population Review, the U.S. 300 faculty shootings. The rest of the international locations on this planet? Between zero and eight. Compounding the problem is how children change into conditioned to simply accept this violence as regular. Children within the U.S. These drills add to overwhelm, anxiety, and desensitization. Further, Black kids are disproportionally affected by gun violence. For instance, a 2017 study revealed within the American Journal of Public Health found that Black people in America are nearly thrice as more likely to be shot by police as white individuals. Relatedly, according to 2022 analysis printed within the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Black youngsters expertise neighborhood firearm violence publicity at greater than four occasions the rate as their white friends.
They've existed for more than 1,000 years and have affected warfare - and society usually - in methods perhaps no other invention can match. We're talking about guns. Once simply the weapon of the world's military forces, guns at the moment are considered a right of the average citizen by some individuals, particularly in the United States, where it's written into the Constitution. So, when had been guns invented? It all started in China around 850 C.E., when Chinese alchemists by chance created gunpowder while attempting to develop a "fountain of youth" potion. The ensuing black powder, known as "huo yao," was a mix of charcoal, saltpeter and sulfur. The then-reigning Song Dynasty was the primary to have used gunpowder in warfare; they did so in opposition to the Mongols, whose fixed invasions into the nation plagued the Chinese all through the interval. More gunpowder-primarily based weapons adopted because the Chinese perfected a wide range of weapons in opposition to the Mongols over the following centuries, together with the first cannons and grenades.
It sounds a lot like the Super Soakers we know right this moment, besides that the strain tank was motorized separate from the gun, connected by a little bit of tubing. The batteries to keep the motor running were fairly expensive, so it wasn't the best toy. Finally, in 1989, the first Super Soaker was launched. The model, the brainchild of mechanical and nuclear engineer Lonnie Johnson, was several years in the making. All of it began in 1982 when Johnson had an concept to make a excessive-performance water gun. He was working as a spacecraft engineer for the Galileo Jupiter mission at the time. While doing a little work on a heat pump that used water, he took the pump house and started playing around with it in his bathroom sink. He found that the pump could shoot water, and the stream of water was extra powerful than any squirt gun he'd seen. Rather than have a motorized pump, Johnson developed an arm-powered pump just like the one you realize right now.
Supervise pellet and BB gunplay and reserve these for older teenagers. Don't permit children to play with toy guns that look reasonable. Always retain the orange cap on the barrel of BB and air guns. Wear eye protection when utilizing toy guns with projectiles resembling airsoft guns and paintball guns. Wear listening to safety when playing with loud guns and only use them outdoors. Keep caps from toy guns out of kids' pockets as a result of they may cause burn accidents. As well as, it's essential that kids should not have access to real guns in the home. If you have firearms in your home, keep them unloaded and locked away, store ammunition in a separate location, and be sure your kids do not know where you retain the keys. Experts additionally advise that parents ask about guns and gun storage in houses where their children spend time. One rule that ought to be hammered home with children: In the event you ever see an actual gun, and even one you suppose is perhaps real, do not contact it, and all the time go discover a grown-up.

OSIRIS-REx Prepares to Return Asteroid Sample
This September, after traveling billions of miles through our solar system, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft will cruise past Earth with an extraordinary delivery. As it passes, it will release a mini-fridge size capsule containing a sample of primordial space rock collected from an asteroid located between the orbits of Earth and Mars.
OSIRIS-REx—the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer—is the first U.S. mission to collect a sample from an asteroid. Scientists hope the pristine material it collected from asteroid Bennu in 2020—about half a pound of rubble and dust from the asteroid’s surface—will provide a window into 4.5 billion years ago when the Sun and planets were forming.
Before it can do that, the sample’s protective capsule will withstand temperatures twice as hot as lava, and the second-fastest velocity ever achieved by a human-made object entering Earth’s atmosphere. After entering Earth’s atmosphere at around 36 times the speed of sound, the capsule may eventually encounter wind, rain, and other weather conditions as it drops closer to the surface. Regardless of weather, it will land in the Great Salt Lake Desert, an arid landscape known for its scorching summer temperatures and its salt flats, the remnants of an ancient lakebed where crusty salt deposits coat the ground.
While much of the focus will be on the technical aspects of the spacecraft and the landing capsule, a team of scientists and meteorologists will also be closely monitoring the weather, which can significantly affect recovery of the capsule.
“Before we launched seven years ago, the capsule had to be designed for all the weather conditions we thought were reasonable for Utah in September,” said Eric Queen, a research engineer with the Entry, Descent and Landing (EDL) team at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.
While the hardy capsule was built to be impervious to things like lightning and ice, “winds are probably our biggest concern any time you land under parachute,” said Mark Johnson, who leads the EDL analysis for Lockheed Martin, in Littleton, Colorado. That’s because wind speed and direction could affect where the capsule sets down within a 36-mile by 8.5-mile (58-kilometer by 14-kilometer) target in the Department of Defense’s Utah Test and Training Range, southwest of Salt Lake City.
Tumblr media
The visualization at the top of this page takes viewers to Utah’s West Desert (Great Salt Lake Desert), where the Utah Test and Training Range is located and where the capsule is expected to land on September 24, 2023. A team with the OSIRIS-REx mission will recover the sample return capsule from the landing area via helicopter and travel to a temporary cleaning room. Imagery for this visualization come from NASA’s Blue Marble and the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) on Landsat 9. The Landsat 9 image above is composite, made from images acquired with OLI-2 on July 15 and September 8, 2023.
The landing range is considered a “safe, controlled area,” said Kenneth Getzandanner, OSIRIS-REx flight dynamics lead. “It was also the landing site for the Stardust mission, so there is heritage.”
The OSIRIS-REx team also thought a lot about conditions on the ground itself. Late summer is monsoon season in the desert, so heavy rains could saturate the silty ground. Wet-cement-like mud would make driving difficult if off-road vehicles are required to help helicopters find and transport the capsule.
“We should know by the end of monsoon season how much precipitation we’ve received and the condition of the salt flats,” said Eric Nelson, a U.S. Army meteorologist supporting the mission. “A good indicator is Bonneville Speed Week, an annual racing event in August.” Since it went off without a hitch, “we’re probably okay.”

Sono-Tek Reports 59% Increase in Q3 Fiscal 2024 Net Sales to Record $5.7 Million and Provides Sales Guidance for Fiscal Year 2024
Q3 Backlog Increased 96% YOY and Remains Strong at Near Record $10.4 Million
Projects ~30% Revenue Growth for Fiscal Year 2024, ending February 29, 2024
Tumblr media
MILTON, NY, January 16, 2024 – Sono-Tek Corporation (NASDAQ: SOTK), the leading developer and manufacturer of ultrasonic coating systems, today reported financial results for the third quarter and first nine months of fiscal year 2024, ended November 30, 2023.
Third Quarter Fiscal 2024 Highlights (compared with the third quarter of fiscal 2023 unless otherwise noted).  The three-month periods ended November 30, 2023 and 2022 are referred to as the third quarter of fiscal 2024 and fiscal 2023, respectively.
“Sono-Tek reported its strongest quarter ever for the third quarter of FY2024 ended November 30th,” said Dr. Christopher L. Coccio, Executive Chairman. “Significant improvements in our supply chain enabled us to ship both new orders and from backlog, resulting in record net sales of $5.7 million, an increase of 59% compared to net sales of $3.6 million in the comparable period last year.  Sales growth was again driven by strong shipments to the alternative/clean energy and medical markets.
“Operating Income increased over 6-fold to $721,000 due to the large increase in sales and gross profit, offset by increases in operating expenses, which reflects continued investment in revenue-related activities, especially R&D and sales and marketing. Net Income increased nearly 6-fold as well.
“Backlog remained high despite the record sales and nearly doubled from a year ago to $10.4 million. This is the second highest reported backlog in our history - the second quarter of this year was the highest - and it reflects the increasing order activity from the clean energy sector in particular, as well as continuing strength in our other business segments.
“We recently increased our projections for the full fiscal year ending February 29, 2024, and now expect net sales to grow approximately 30% over last fiscal year. This will be a record high for the Company and is the result of increasing shipments from our strong backlog and orders from new and repeat customers. We look forward to closing out a record year and entering the new fiscal year with a strong foundation and continued momentum,” concluded Dr. Coccio.
Third Quarter Fiscal 2024 Sales Overview
Net sales increased 59% to $5,690,000 compared to $3,586,000 in the third quarter of fiscal 2023. The increase was primarily driven by increased demand for Multi-Axis Coating systems which grew 98% in the third quarter, and are commonly used in the clean energy and medical device markets. Integrated Coating System sales accelerated by 635% due to continued success from Sono-Tek’s newly developed float glass coating platform as well as a newly completed custom built system for an important strategic customer in the solar market. PCB Fluxing sales dipped by 75% for the third quarter compared to especially strong sales in the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Management believes that the PCB spray fluxer market has slowed and returned to historical revenue norms, although quoting activity remains strong.
Sales to the Alternative/Clean Energy market grew 189% to $2,083,000, positively impacted by a growing number of Sono-Tek’s customers transitioning from our R&D systems to production scale systems that carry much higher average selling prices. Sono-Tek platforms are used in the manufacturing of critical membranes for carbon capture, green hydrogen generation and fuel cell applications. Medical sales recorded 53% growth in large part due to the shipment of two custom implantable device coating machines to a repeat customer, with further orders projected from the same customer in fiscal 2025.
Approximately 60% of sales were to the U.S. and Canada compared to 44% in the comparable period of fiscal 2023. Sales to the U.S. and Canada increased by 116% impacted by the continuing trend to onshoring in addition to several U.S. government initiatives that are investing in the clean energy sector and advanced research markets. Asia Pacific (APAC) sales decreased by 18% primarily due to decreased sales to China. Sales to Europe, Middle East, Asia (EMEA) increased by 102% primarily due to a strong quarter for shipments in Germany to the clean energy sector.
Backlog on November 30, 2023 was $10,439,000, a 96% year-over-year increase and an increase of 22% compared with backlog of $8.5 million on February 28, 2023 (the end of fiscal year 2023). Quarter-end backlog also nearly matched the record high of $10,707,000 for the second quarter of fiscal year 2024, ended August 31, 2023. The increase in backlog is primarily due to growing orders from the Alternative/Clean Energy and Medical markets.
Third Quarter FY 2024 Financial Overview
Gross profit was $2,926,000, an increase of 60%, compared with $1,824,000 for the third quarter of fiscal 2023. The gross profit margin was 51% for both periods.
Operating expenses were $2,205,000, a 28% increase from $1,721,000 in the prior year period. The increase was largely due to an approximate 14% increase in headcount, which is primarily composed of technical professionals hired to support our increasing growth and expansion for large platform custom engineered systems.
Research and product development costs increased 49% to $776,000 primarily due to increased headcount, salaries and the higher costs of research and development materials and supplies, which are directed to the Company’s ongoing focused growth initiatives.
Marketing and selling expenses increased 20% to $955,000 primarily due to increases in headcount, salaries, travel and trade show expenses, partially offset by a decrease in commission and insurance expenses.
General and Administrative expenses increased 16% to $474,000 primarily due to increased salaries and corporate expenses, partially offset by a decrease in stock-based compensation expense.
Operating income increased 600% to $721,000 compared to $103,000 in the prior year period. The current period’s increase in operating income is a result of an increase in revenue and gross profit offset by an increase in operating expenses. Operating margin for the quarter increased to 13% compared with 3% in the prior year period.
Interest income, dividend income and unrealized gain on marketable securities increased to $170,000 compared to $30,000, primarily due to the current high interest rate environment.
Net income increased 557% to $690,000, or $0.04 per share, compared with $105,000, or $0.01 per share, for the third quarter of fiscal 2023, primarily due to an increase in gross profit and interest and dividend income partially offset by an increase in operating expenses and income tax expense. Diluted weighted average shares outstanding were 15,776,972 compared to 15,773,370 for the prior year period.
First Nine Months FY 2024 Overview
Net sales increased by 31% to $14,932,000 compared to $11,401,000 for the first nine months of fiscal 2023. Gross profit increased 29% to $7,504,000 for the first nine months of fiscal 2024 compared with $5,827,000 in the first nine months of fiscal 2023. The gross profit margin was 50% compared with 51% for the prior year period.
Operating income increased 81% to $1,195,000 compared with $662,000 for the first nine months of fiscal 2023. Operating margin for the first nine months of fiscal 2024 increased to 8% compared with 6% in the first nine months of fiscal 2023.Net income increased 124% to $1,285,000, or $0.08 per share, for the first nine months of fiscal 2024 compared with $573,000, or $0.04 per share, for the first nine months of fiscal 2023. Diluted weighted average shares outstanding were 15,775,675 compared to 15,764,351 for the prior year period.
Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Overview
At November 30, 2023, cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities totaled $12.6 million, Sono-Tek had no debt on its balance sheet and stockholders’ equity was $16.1 million.
At November 30, 2023, the Company had received approximately $3.1 million in cash deposits or down-payments for orders from its customers.
Capital expenditures in the third quarter of fiscal 2024 were $327,000, which were invested in ongoing upgrades to the Company’s manufacturing facilities. Sono-Tek anticipates capital expenditures will total approximately $750,000 for fiscal year 2024.

LOTD: Grindle Point
~sorry for delay - meant for December 8th, 2023~
(from: https://www.ibiblio.org/lighthouse/me.htm)
Grindle Point (2)
1874 (station established 1851). Reactivated (inactive 1934-1987); focal plane 39 ft (12 m); green flash every 4 s. 39 ft (12 m) square brick tower with lantern and gallery, attached by a covered passageway to the original 1-1/2 story wood keeper's house; solar-powered 250 mm lens (1987). Tower painted white, lantern and gallery black. Brick oil house (1906). Trabas has Boucher's closeup photo, Robert English has a good 2007 photo, Anderson has a good page with several photos, Marinas.com has aerial photos, Huelse has a historic postcard view, and Google has a satellite view. The town of Isleboro bought the station for $1200 when it was deactivated in 1934 and put the keeper's house in use as the Sailor's Memorial Museum in 1938. A fog bell similar to the original is on display. In 1987, after many requests, the Coast Guard returned the light to the tower. Located on the southeast side of Islesboro Island at the entrance to Gilkey Harbor. The island is accessible by state ferry from Lincolnville, and the light station is adjacent to the ferry terminal. Site open, museum open daily except Mondays July 1 through Labor Day (early September), tower closed. Operator: U.S. Coast Guard. Owner/site manager: Town of Islesboro (Grindle Point Sailor's Museum and Lighthouse). ARLHS USA-356; Admiralty J0090; USCG 1-4405.
