Leopard (Panthera Pardus Kotiya) ...
The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) is a leopard subspecies native to Sri Lanka. It was first described in 1956 by Sri Lankan zoologist Paules Edward Pieris Deraniyagala.[2]
Since 2020, the Sri Lankan leopard has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, as the population is estimated at less than 800 mature individuals, and is probably declining.[1]
Characteristics[edit]
Female in Yala National Park
The Sri Lankan leopard has a tawny or rusty yellow coat with dark spots and close-set rosettes. Seven females measured in the early 20th century averaged a weight of 64 lb (29 kg) and had a mean head-to-body-length of 1.04 m (3 ft 5 in) with a 77.5 cm (2 ft 6.5 in) long tail, the largest being 1.14 m (3 ft 9 in) with a 84 cm (2 ft 9 in) long tail; 11 males averaged 56 kg (124 lb), the largest being 77 kg (170 lb), and measured 1.27 m (4 ft 2 in) with a 86 cm (2 ft 10 in) long tail, the largest being 1.42 m (4 ft 8 in) with a 97 cm (3 ft 2 in) long tail.[3] The Sri Lankan leopard has possibly evolved to become a rather large leopard subspecies, because it is the apex predator in the country. Large males have been suggested to reach almost 100 kg (220 lb), but evidence for this is lacking.[4]
Melanistic leopards are rare. Few records exist, including from Mawuldeniya, Pitadeniya, and Nallathanniya.[5] In October 2019, the Department of Wildlife Conservation recorded live footage of a melanistic individual for the first time, a male.[6]
Distribution and habitat[edit]
Leopard attacking an Asian water buffalo calf
The Sri Lankan leopard is still found in all habitats throughout the island in both protected and unprotected areas.[7] These habitat types can be broadly categorised into:[8]
Arid zone with <1,000 mm (39 in) rainfall
Dry zone with 1,000–2,000 mm (39–79 in) rainfall
Wet zone with >2,000 mm (79 in) rainfall
In Sri Lanka's central hills, leopards have been recorded in forest patches, tea estates, grasslands, home gardens, and pine and eucalyptus plantations.[9]
Ecology and behaviour[edit]
In Yala National Park, the Sri Lankan leopard as in other locations, is a solitary hunter, with the exception of females with young. Male's ranges typically overlap the smaller ranges of several females, as well as portions of the ranges of neighboring males, although exclusive core areas are apparent. They are more active and prefer hunting at night, but are also somewhat active during dawn, dusk, and daytime hours. They rarely haul their kills into trees, which is likely due to the lack of intraguild competition and the relative abundance of prey. In 2001 to 2002, adult resident leopard density was estimated at 12.1 mature individuals and 21.7 individuals of all ages per 100 km2 (39 sq mi) in Block I of Yala National Park.[10]
The Sri Lankan leopard hunts by silently stalking its prey, until it is within striking distance, when it unleashes a burst of speed to quickly pursue and pounce on its victim. The prey is usually dispatched with a single bite to the throat. Like most cats, it is pragmatic in its choice of diet, which can include small mammals, birds, and reptiles, as well as larger animals.[1] Sri Lankan axis deer make up the majority of its diet in the dry zone.[10] The animal also preys on sambar, barking deer, wild boar, and monkeys.[11]
No birth season or peak is apparent, with births occur across the year.[10] Its lifespan ranges from 12 to 15 years in the wild, and up to 22 years in captivity.[12]
The leopard is sympatric with the Sri Lankan sloth bear.[13][14]

The things we’ve seen
A new born baby on 5 hour bus journey from Cebu to danbantayan. The roads in the Philippines are bumpy and dusty. The baby slept, fed and lay on her mum the whole journey, in the heat, of a very busy bus. The driver stopped half way at a market, where the baby was changed on a bench next to some food stalls.
Preparing bbq fish, pork, chicken, salad with a baby asleep in a hammock above, on a boat trip in the Philippines. As the boat swayed in the waves, the baby was rocked, oblivious to the feast that was being prepared 30cm underneath him.
A van driver put his seatbelt on before approaching the police at a checkpoint, after the checks he got back in and out the belt on, only to get around the corner and take it off again.
Taxi’s with signs saying ‘passengers, ensure your seatbelt is fastened!’. Upon reading this we reached for our belts, only to find that there were none.
Petrol sold in old 1l coke glass bottles at the side of the road.
We saw houses made out of bamboo, houses made out of tin, houses made out of brick and concrete.
Meat, fish and vegetables sold at a local market that would be a million miles from uk standards...but also a million times fresher.
A cricket game played by locals in Sri Lanka, spied through the window of the Kandy to Nanuoya train in the sweltering heat, in a valley of tea plantations.
Cricket stumps on side of dirt road that meanders through the tea plantations.
The ears of a cow, as it pokes its head out of tea plantations, eating tea leaves.
Clothes drying on tin roofs, no need for a washing line or tumble dryer in Sri Lanka.
The high temperatures of the wind as driving along in a jeep to a safari at Udawalla...it’s a strange realisation to find that the wind makes your warmer!
Wild elephants spraying dust and water on their backs to cool them, and water buffalo as still as a statue with just it’s horns and head poking out of the water. Safari jeep driver expertly navigating the crevasses of the windy, off-road track as we jolted up and down in the back, at times, while simultaneously maintaining a phone call...
A car park hosting two cricket games, with full size cricket bats, tennis balls and wooden chair for wickets. No wonder there were only a handful of cars parked.
Visit to a ‘spice market’, we went full of anticipation for stalls of exotic spices, only to be greeted with essentially a Sri Lankan version of Holland and Barrett.
We’ve ran on beaches towards sunsets, and hiked the hills of Japan.
We’ve tried the famous Melbourne coffee and sipped the wines of the Yara valley.
We’ve enjoyed the best dumplings we’ve ever tried in Hong Kong, and probably also our cheapest meal.
We’ve felt the cold of japan while dashing to the outdoor bathroom at a home stay, and the heat of the sun on our backs as we climbed sigaria rock in Sri Lanka. The humidity of Singapore that hits you like you’re walking through soup, and the torrential rains of Melbourne in the lush forest of the Dandelong.
We’ve felt sun cream on our skin and the heat on our backs for almost 3 months straight.
We’ve shared bathrooms with frogs, bedrooms with ghekos, and chased out the odd cockroach or two.
Today, after 10 weeks of seeing, doing, experiencing - our trip comes to an end.
Thank you for following our journey, we hope you’ve enjoyed the updates along the way!

Adventure in Yala,
Tumblr media
I got a chance to go on a wildlife safari in Yala National park as a part of my 7 day Sri Lanka tour package of Sri Lanka Tour Packages given by Olanka Travels. In my memory, it is one of the most beautiful experiences I ever had. If I give you a piece of background information about Yala, ala National Park is the most popular wildlife safari destination in Sri Lanka. It is noted for its high leopard density, maybe the greatest in the world, and is located in the island's south-eastern corner. Additionally, you are certain to see elephants - cranky lone males during the dry season and vast herds during the rainy season. Sloth bears are also a popular attraction. Additionally, you will observe creatures such as wild boars, many deer types, and wild buffalo.
On the day of my safari, I got a chance to see a herd of elephants drinking water and got lucky to see some Sri Lankan leopards also. And few dears and beautiful birds with plenty of peacocks. If you are planning to go on a trip to Sri Lanka my recommendation is Olanka Travels.

Habarana – Part 2. Our next outing was a Jeep Safari in Kaudulla National Park. As a Jeep owner I cannot proceed without clearing up a little fact. They are using the word "Jeep" fairly loosely as none are actually Jeeps and are instead simply off-road vehicles. If we were in Thailand someone mights say, “Same same". But really, not the same! Anyways, as the truck labored through deep water/mud we had wind in our hair and sun on our face, it was a grand time. We got to see elephants, water buffalo, fox, land monitors, spotted deer, numerous types of bird, and, of course, monkeys.
The next morning we woke up early, had a large Sri Lankan breakfast, and headed for a nearby town called Dambulla. Here we found the aptly named Dambulla rock, which is similar in geologic formation to the previously mentioned Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala Rock. It differs in that it has some pretty neat Buddhist shrines/statues/temples within pseudo-caves. Typical for our temple visits we entered, awkwardly wandered around, and observed the praying of the faithful.

Udawalawe National Park Jeep Safari
With herds of elephants, wild buffalo, sambar deer and leopards, Udawalawa National Park is the Sri Lankan national park that best rivals the savannah reserves of Africa. In fact, for elephant watching, Udawalawa often surpasses many of the most famous East African national parks.  The reserve covers 30,821 hectares of land area and was established on 30th June 1972. Before the designation of the national park, the area was used for shifting cultivation (Chena farming). The farmers were gradually removed once the national park was declared. Udawalawa is an important habitat for water birds and Sri Lankan (Asian) elephants. The park is 165 kilometers from Colombo. It is a popular tourist destination and the third most visited park in the country.

Elephants - 19 January
The hotel we are staying in at Udawalawe is owned by a former international cricketer who was the wicket keeper in the Sri Lankan national team that won the 1996 Cricket World Cup and therefore a National hero. All his cricket trophies and memorabilia from his international cricket career are on display in the hotel. Here is the trophy cabinet:

A is in his element! We spend time yesterday afternoon and this morning bird watching in the garden of the hotel. The garden overlooks a small river.
Tumblr media
We went to a local Elephant Transition Centre to watch the noon feeding. This centre works in conjunction with the National Park in rescuing orphaned and injured elephants and unlike the elephant orphanage we have seen, this centre aims to keep the elephants wild and its programmes have successfully released rescued elephants back into the National Park and reintegrated them into the wild. We watched the mostly young elephants being given milk. A few elephants at a time were allowed into the feeding area. After having milk some ate leaves from Jackfruit branches laid on the ground or went and enjoyed a pile of dust or the water pool. We watched for about 30 minutes by which time 50 elephants had been fed and they then all walked out of the feeding area back to the forest and lake areas. Here are some elephants rushing to get milk:

And here are some enjoying the water:

We then did a second trip this afternoon which was a safari to the Udawalawe National Park. Over a three hours period we saw many elephants and lots of wonderful birds. In addition we saw several crocodiles, lizards, foxes, buffalo. The elephants in different places were all busy feeding:

This was a heavily pregnant female:
Tumblr media
The birds are beautiful often with vivid colours and inevitably much more difficult to photograph. I did catch this Bee eater:
Tumblr media
The Park has a lovely lake. This is where we saw several crocodiles but not close enough to capture on film:
Tumblr media
We also came across a herd of buffalo cooling themselves:

And we saw one last elephant as we were making our way out of the park:
