Echoes of our Past | February 10th 1923
Tumblr media
Librarian Richard Forrest takes a look at news highlights published in The Echo 100 years ago this week.
Old Sores Can be Closed
General Richard Mulcahy, head of the armed forces, said that if those opposing the Free State would only come forward like men and admit that they had taken the wrong road, and lay down their arms, they would quickly be restored to the affection of the public. This would be such a massive and unexpected relief to the country that the sores that opened up in the last eight to ten months would close again in a month.
President Cosgrave in London
President Cosgrave’s present visit to London is concerned with a multiplicity of departmental, legislative and financial matters which are passing from British Government to Irish control under the terms of the Treaty. He met Prime Minister Bonar Law at Downing Street this morning.
Shooting Near Midleton Yesterday
At about 6 o’clock last night a young man named John Wiggins was proceeding home to Ballinacurra in company with a National soldier named Lee. When the pair came to a rather quiet spot on the road revolver shots rang out and Wiggins was hit in the palm of his left hand where the bullet still remains. The two returned to Midleton where he was attended by Dr. P.J. O’Brien before removal to Midleton Hospital. The injured is an ex-National Army man having served in Midleton and Youghal. Elsewhere in east Cork, “Maryland” the property of the late Tom Donovan in Rostellan, was burned down last night. The residence was untenanted and devoid of furniture.
Concealed Soldiers Shoot Raiders
During a raid on a Waterford sub-post office, soldiers who were concealed shot two of the raiders dead.
Cork Egg-Packers Strike
The striking egg-packers picketed even more stridently last night and prevented patrons from entering the bar of the Grosvenor Hotel. The hotel is a concern of Mr. J. Sullivan, one of the packers’ employers. Earlier they prevented provisions and parcels from being delivered to the Windsor Hotel nearby which also belongs to Mr. Sullivan. When interviewed, Mr. Sullivan said that neither of the hotels has the slightest connection with the egg business and in the case of the Grosvenor he is merely a shareholder. He said railway strikers may as well picket the businesses that use railways. There is no progress to report in the strike by Cork’s flour milling operatives.

Cork District Sessions
Daniel O’Keeffe of Eason’s Hill was charged by Guardsman Dwyer with having been drunk in the South Main Street at 9.45 pm on Friday. Kate Carroll, no fixed abode, was charged by Patrolman Bryant with a like offence on the Grand Parade. Both fined 2s. 6d.
Women’s Health Association
The Association met in the St. Vincent de Paul Hall on Queen Street (Fr. Matthew Street) on February 8th. Mrs. Maurice Healy in the Chair. The reports for December and January were read by Nurse Lyndon. There were 102 tuberculosis cases on the books. Of these five went to the sanatorium, one to the Union Hospital (St. Finbarr’s) and one died. Eight cases returned home from the sanatorium and one from St. Patrick’s Hospital. The houses of two cases that died were disinfected. Air cushions were lent to two bad cases. Instruction was given in seventeen cases pertaining to the danger of sputum. In all health cases, 573 home visits were made in the two months. Regarding Samaritan work, a great number of cases had to be helped owing to unemployment. Tonics, malt, dressings for surgical cases and foodstuffs such as milk, eggs etc. for necessitous cases were distributed. There is a great need of warm underwear etc. for the winter months.
At the Opera House
Charles Doran and his travelling Shakespearean Company gave their farewell performance at the Opera House last night. It was “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” performed before a very large audience. After the fall of the curtain Mr. Doran returned heartfelt thanks to the public of Cork for their splendid support. The O’Mara Opera Company open their engagement on Monday night with “Mignon”. This beautiful opera by Ambroise Thomas is a great favourite in Cork and a most enjoyable performance is anticipated.

Poor Joe Spriggs Soccered
Joe Spriggs’ application for reinstatement has been turned down. He has admitted playing Soccer, and according to the rule, he stands automatically suspended for a period of two years. The case is a rather hard one, and his name, which smacks so much of cage birds and bird-lime, appeals to me as I am a bit of a bird fancier myself. Poor Spriggs. In the absence of Gaelic football matches during the many troubled months that have gone by, betook himself to the Association code to keep in form and to prevent his becoming rusty. That is the head and foot of his offending. If such a rule had not been in existence, he would not have been sprigged and caged up as he is now. The times that are in it are making it difficult to get our G.A.A. players to turn out, and other games are increasing in popularity. Not only with players but with the public. Time for leniency.
Miscellaneous International Snippets
The Minister of Labour has stated in Rome that the Italian government will maintain the eight-hour day. The Prince of Wales enjoyed great sport with the Quorn Hounds yesterday. His horse fell but the Prince received only slight facial scratches. The Belgian refusal to handle mail for Germany is causing serious delivery delays. The Belgians say that if the Germans want the mail they will have to come and fetch it. Steps are being taken to rescue the sacks of English mail lying at Herbesthal. Aviator Broad reached Paris from London on a night flight of four hours.

#Repost @instablog9ja with @let.repost • • • • • • Stop throwing expensive burials and… – Rev. Gopep to Christians Christians have been advised to stop throwing expensive burials ceremonies for their loved ones and help those who are alive. Rev. Fr. Godfrey Gopep, Parish Priest of St. Finbarrs’ Catholic Church in Rayfield, Jos, gave the advice during a sermon on Sunday, September 25. Gopep said organizing expensive burials for loved ones would not take the deceased to heaven. According to NAN, he said: ”I have observed that most Christian burials are expensive; we sink huge amounts of money to bury our loved ones. Sometimes, those who donated huge sums for the burial didn’t support the deceased when he or she was alive. It has become like a show and competition among families; I heard that some churches now demand a fee before they conduct funerals. I advise Christians to cut down how they spend huge amounts to bury the de@d and learn to support people when they are alive.” Facts 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯 @assasson.504 @orantino_cayold504 @beautifuldanger02 @gruntfitnesss @hvac_shawn #emericaxcaliber #sapiosexual #louisiana #losangeles #reelvideos #temp #tbt #suckafree #hiphop #laplace #reelsinstagram #explore @_anime_gallery_ig @instagram @_._5k.fans__7855 #trending #viralpost #reels #trendingsongs #trendy #exploremore #explorepage #trendingreels https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci8Gx5XP2kl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

GOUGANE BARRA
Tumblr media
Some photos here from a trip a few weeks back to Gougane Barra, in County Cork. This is a beautiful forest park with a romantic looking lakeside church, Sr. Finbarr’s Oratory – a popular venue for weddings as there is a hotel on site also, just facing the church. This was also the site of an early Christian settlement.
There are several forest trails, high and low level, with stunning forest…

Librarian Richard Forrest takes a look at news highlights published in The Echo 100 years ago this week.
Examiner Manager Shot
Denis McGrath, Manager of the Cork Examiner, was shot at and wounded when entering his house at the junction of Victoria Road and Blackrock Road at about 7 o’clock yesterday evening. Mr. McGrath left the Examiner Office at 6.30pm to take the Blackcock tram home. On opening the garden gate, he was immediately rushed from behind by four men who had apparently been lying in wait. They drew revolvers and fired three shots at close range before decamping. One of the bullets shattered the bone above his right elbow and another penetrated deep into the side of his back. A military officer who had been on board the tram gave chase, but the assailants made their escape along Victoria Avenue. On hearing the shots, Mr. McGrath’s daughter quickly came to his aid and, despite his injuries, he was able to walk into the house unaided and without commotion. Miss Crean, an experienced nurse, and daughter of the ex-M.P. Eugene Crean, hurried from an adjacent house to render assistance. Shortly afterwards Drs. Dundon and Shanahan were on the scene, as well as Frs. Moylan and McCafferey, Blackrock Road, and Fr. McSwiney, St. Finbarr’s South. Mr. McGrath was conveyed to the South Infirmary and operated upon. The operation was successful, and he is progressing well under the circumstances. A second operation will be performed today to remove the bullet from his back. The Rev. Dr. Thomas called to the Examiner Offices this morning to express his concern for Mr. McGrath before attending the Cork dockers meeting and departing for America this evening.
Cork Dockers Strike
The Rev. Dr. Thomas, honorary president of the Cork Workers Council, opened an important meeting today in relation to the dockers strike. Deliberations paused at noon in order for the strikers to have time to consider proposals. The nature of those proposals is not yet public but the atmosphere around the matters in dispute appears amicable and there are grounds for hope of a settlement. The dispute has brought great hardship and paralysed trade in the south of Ireland. The Clyde Company’s Eddystone left Penrose Quay in the early hours this morning to return to Glasgow with her cargo undischarged.
Incendiary Attack on Capwell
Just before 10 o’clock last night a desperate attempt was made to destroy Capwell Station, the terminus of the Cork-Macroom Railway. Armed men broke into the station and sprinkled petrol all about the offices and goods stores. The entire premises would have been destroyed but the Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene and immediately proceeded to quell the flames. By 11 o’clock all was extinguished and comparatively little damage was done. A military guard remained at the station.
Neutral I.R.A. at Youghal
Neutral members of the I.R.A. met at the Town Hall, Youghal last night to formally organise and passed the following resolution: “We express our approval of all steps being taken to bring the present deplorable state of affairs in the country to an end. We pledge our support to any agreed policy which will be directed towards the attainment of an honourable peace”.
Gramophones Stolen
Yesterday evening a number of gramophones and gramophone records stated to have been stolen from Piggott & Co., Limerick were discovered concealed in a stack of hay at Rossbrien by some youths. The matter was reported to the Civic Guard who are conducting inquiries.

Volunteer Smith Succumbs
Volunteer Christopher Smith (not O’Gorman), National Army, seriously wounded in a fight with Irregulars at Dromina, near Charleville on Wednesday, died in in St. John’s Hospital this evening. Deceased received a bullet through the left lung. He was a married man with three children and a native of Limerick.
Body Recovered
The body of John Shea, one of the four young men drowned on St. Stephen’s Day at Kilsheelan, has been taken from the river at Carrick-on-Suir.
Ordinary Man Seeks Less Work
A staggering, amazing thing has happened! A man – he may well have escaped from King Tut…, (whatever-ya-call-‘im’s) tomb over beyond at Luxor – has advertised in a newspaper thus, “An honest man seeks work”.  Paralysing phrase this. I was unable to finish reading the advert. The identity was not revealed but what multitudes would flock to see such a specimen! There is a story told about a well-known Cork street corner. One day a man drove up, stopped at it, and exclaimed in a loud voice “Work”. Only for the ambulance to fly back and forwards to bring half the men there to the nearest hospital. The other half managed to crawl home and said it wasn’t just a bomb that had exploded but a whole cargo of German mines. The mockery! the daring! of that phrase. At once an archaicism and an anachronism. Of course, the advert should read, “An ordinary man seeks work”, or “An honest man seeks less work”.
Handball Championships at Cork
The Cork Handball Association is planning a tournament for the Murphy Cup next season. The tournament will be open to entries from all of Ireland and the winner will be proclaimed Handball Champion of Ireland. It will be played in the Ball Court, Old Market Place, Cork. It is probable that the successful competitor will have the opportunity to advance to meet J.J. Kelly, New York, the World Champion.
Shandon vs. Clifton
An interesting association football tie is listed for decision to-morrow when Shandon meet Clifton in the first round of the senior challenge cup. Clifton’s cup record is better but Shandon’s current league performance is superior being just one point offf the leaders. A well contended match is anticipated. Mr. N. Wolffe to have charge of the whistle. Kick-off at Victoria Cross 3 p.m. sharp.
