MARLOWE (2023)
Starring Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, Jessica Lange, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ian Hart, Colm Meaney, Daniela Melchior, François Arnaud, Seána Kerslake, Danny Huston, Alan Cumming, Patrick Muldoon, Ian Hart, Jose Manuel Maciá, Roberto Peralta Maya, Stella Stocker, Michael Strelow, Julius Cotter, Mitchell Mullen and Kim DeLonghi.
Screenplay by William Monahan.
Directed by Neil Jordan.
Distributed by Open Road Films. 110 minutes. Rated R.
It takes a certain amount of bravery to play a character who has previously been portrayed by Dick Powell, Robert Mitchum, Elliott Gould and particularly Humphrey Bogart. Liam Neeson is a good enough actor that he should be up to the challenge – despite his recent wallowing in cheesy action features – however, he never feels really comfortable playing Raymond Chandler’s noir gumshoe Philip Marlowe.
Although the character has been at the center of many Hollywood classics like The Big Sleep, Farewell My Lovely, The Long Goodbye and Murder My Sweet, Marlowe is the first major (well sort of major) motion picture to feature the character in over 40 years. Also, Marlowe is not based on one of the classic Raymond Chandler tales, instead it is based on the 2014 novel The Black-Eyed Blonde by Benjamin Black, one of many Marlowe novels authorized by Chandler’s estate.
What can you say? Marlowe is no Big Sleep.
It’s okay, even perhaps a good thing, to try to resurrect a mostly forgotten style like film noir. Sadly, despite having the trappings of the genre – tough guys, femme fatales, private dicks in smart fedoras, twisty crime narratives – Marlowe mostly loses the noir. Instead, it’s a sepia-toned museum piece, one that appreciates the dark style but cannot seem to capture or advance it. (Like, say, a better backwards-gazing noir tribute like Chinatown.)
Instead, Marlowe trots out the old cliches in a slightly detached but stylish manner and never quite engages its audience.
Also, the very tonally necessary role of the city of Los Angeles in the 1930s – so important for both the genre and also this specific story – is played by Barcelona, which is a beautiful city, but looks little like LA.
As these films so often do, Marlowe opens with the gumshoe being approached in his office by a mysterious blonde with a case – one that is not exactly what she makes it seem. I’m a huge fan of Diane Krueger as an actress, but she feels uncomfortable in the femme fatale role of Clare.
But then again, as stated earlier Neeson is a terrific actor, but also wrong for Marlowe. He is honestly a little too old for the role. Also, his character is too accommodating, too prone to apologize, too timid – at least until the script required that Marlowe administer a Taken-style beat down on assorted bad guys. (Phillip Marlowe is known for his tough guy exterior, but not necessarily for fighting his way through a case.)
The rest of the sterling cast comes out looking better. Danny Huston and Alan Cummings are suitably oily as local gangsters, and Jessica Lange pretty much steals the picture as Clare’s mother, an aging and very cynical film star who is used to getting her way.
The mystery itself is strangely very complex and yet at the same time not overly intriguing or surprising. However, despite the fact that most of this doesn’t look all that much like Los Angeles, the film looks great. It is directed with workman-like economy by Neil Jordan (Mona Lisa, The Crying Game).
Listen, I think it’s great that someone decided to revive the mostly moribund film noir genre. And frankly, Marlowe may have been easier to take had they just made it about a random LA shamus, rather than making it about one of the most iconic names in the genre. At the very least, critics and fans would not feel as much need to compare it to the stories that came before.

THE GOOD LIAR (2019) Grade: C-
The dramatic shifts in tones was jarring. I didn't like the ending / twist. Felt like they they didn't give us enough clues.

Dream from Sofie Lee on Vimeo.
One day, I saw this dazzling darkness, and it devoured me. Then, I no longer existed.
We often tend to dream, expect, and imagine the things we wished we had. Dreaming is a catalyst for a better future. However, I see dreams in two different ways. One being that dreams give off a sense of motivation and the other that dreams create a sense of delusion within. As humans, our dreams block us from seeing the things that are right in front of us. Although dreams are meant to keep us alive, they also make us forget our existence and our purpose. In the end, our lack of awareness of our surroundings can drive us to forget who we really are.
The project, Dream, is a short film that is created based on a visual poem, “Lonely Wintry Moon,” which I wrote portraying myself losing my existence to follow this invisible dream.

Dream.
Life is like a warm breeze that carries the redolent of spring, the colors that transmute the sky from dusk till dawn. Like a little chaste sprout that just pushed out the ground dauntlessly. A small water drop that just landed on a wild flower to tell its story from a long itinerary
But I’m an indigent goldfish that is floundering helplessly in this tiny bowl enveloped by hollow plastic plants and just gazing at this beautiful world; a xanadu I can’t be a part of it
I am a puddle on the street that reflects the blue sky and makes graceful ebb and flow of waves coalesced with the spring breeze
but I’m merely a deserted puddle wandering aimlessly. Then a bleak, lonely wintry moon devoured my life. The life of warmth, beauty, love, and passion departed. Then, time stopped, everything lost its colors. It froze my heart and only the whiteness lingered in silence with me

INTRODUCING; TRISTAN REED
Tumblr media
Age:  30
Gender: Cis Man
Pronouns: He/Him
Occupation: Repair Technican at Bits & Bytes
Trigger Warnings: bullying, abandonment issues, toxic friendship, homophobia (also internalised)
BACKGROUND
Born in Chicago to the Reed family, Tristan was the second eldest in the family, only older than his brother August by a year. Their family never had a lot, and their parents worked endlessly just to make sure Tristan and his siblings had food on the table.
The older three would often look after their younger siblings, and though this, Tristan became closest to his sister Ava, always trying to make sure she was happy and entertained.
In school, Tristan didn’t have many friends. He wasn’t good with people, never really knowing how to talk to them. Tristan was far better with computers that he ever is with actual human beings. It didn’t help Tristan could never spend time with anyone, too busy helping out at home.
One friend he made, was Travis. Travis seemed perfect, sticking by Tristan’s side. The two were as thick as thieves. As they grew older, Tristan began forming a crush on his best friend. Tristan freaked, not wanting to lose his only friend so he shoved the feelings down and tried not to think about them, especially given Travis was homophobic. He would say enough horrid shit that Tristan began to believe it too, shoving the idea that he wasn’t straight down and keeping himself firmly in the closet.
The second he was old enough, Tristan began to work, helping out as a stocker in a store late at night, when the younger kids had gone to bed. Balancing school, work, and taking care of his siblings was hard, especially after Stella had left the moment she graduated. He was 15, and all the responsibilities felt like it fell to him and August. Tris knew Stella had dealt with a lot, and while he was angry she left, he also somewhat understood. That was, until the months went past and there was no contact with his sister at all.
Tris was devastated, but that quickly turned to anger, the boy becoming far more bitter and jaded after his sister left. It didn’t help with Travis being a horrible influence, constantly picking at him, being controlling and manipulative. Tris realised how toxic Travis was, but couldn’t seem to get rid of him. It wasn’t until Travis left for college that Tris instantly cut all contact off with the other, the two having got into an argument because Tris wasn’t following him to college.
He couldn’t afford college, and hadn’t gotten grades good enough to get a scholarship, having focused too much on work. So he stayed working, picking up as many shifts as he could. He began working at the tech help desk, something he was very gifted at.
While August went to college, Tristan stayed at home, not wanting to leave his younger siblings.
When she came to Chicago, Tristan met Chloe. At first, he was wary of her, his friendship with Travis left him bitter, jaded and untrusting. However, somehow, Chloe managed to worm her way into his life and brighten it up.
Eventually, he started dating, finding a girl, Mia. Tristan liked Mia, but something never really felt right with her but he was determined to make it work, so he proposed after a year of dating when they were 24. It still didn’t seem to fix how he felt about her, and it frustrated Tristan.
Eventually, Tristan opened up to Chloe, who helped him past his internalised issues, coming to terms with the fact he was gay. Tristan felt awful breaking things off with Mia, but the girl understood and the two remained civil after. He’s forever grateful for Chloe, and honestly doesn’t know what he’d do without her.
Despite the fact he’d come to terms with it, Tristan never really told anyone that wasn’t Chloe, Mia or Ava. The idea of coming out of the closet terrified him, and so he just didn’t. He wasn’t in a hurry to date again anyway.
Tris recently lost his job, being fired after another employee framed him for something he didn’t do. He was beyond pissed, after all the years he’d worked in the damn place.
When he heard about Stella being pregnant, and being in the same place as August, he was torn. He was still angry at her for abandoning him, but he missed his brother, and he didn’t feel like Chicago was for him any longer. After talking with Chloe and Ava, the three decided to move to Wakefield; Tristan easily getting a job in bits & bytes.
