for it is in passing we achieve immortality; through this we become a paragon of virtue and glory to rise above all, infinite in distance and unbound by death. i release your soul and by my shoulder protect thee.
we could be the gods of this world; our powers surpass all others. our souls transcend death. we could […] create the paradise the old gods could not.
when we break or wear out or simply finish what we were made to do, we’re called back. […] he’ll be fixed up nice, and made into the herb he wanted to be when he was still herb. then he’ll come back and find his purpose […] i know, i know, where you’re from things…die…but we’re just not like you at all. we ascend.
DO YOU SEE?
i'm... cursed. for thousands of years, i've walked the surface of remnant, living, dying, and reincarnating [in the body of a like-minded soul] […] i am the combination of [countless men who've spent their lives] trying to protect the people of remnant. with every rebirth, my soul is eventually [merged with another and i am changed], but my memories stay with me. this curse was bestowed upon me by the gods, because i failed to stop salem in the past, but we must stop her now.
DO YOU SEE??
ozma had been ready to give his life for justice countless times, but now he saw a woman worth saving it for / i’m sorry, but that world just isn’t as dear to me without her; if i may, i’d rather return to the afterlife to see salem.
Tumblr media
ascension is a tripartite concept: death is transcendental, the process of becoming the ideal self through the continual refinement and active pursuit of one’s chosen purpose. both salem and pyrrha articulate this idea in full and the cat defines it explicitly.
when ozma describes his curse, he touches on all three parts but all of them are corrupted: death binds him over and over again to someone else; instead of becoming more and more himself his sense of ‘himself’ is continually eroded by fusion with someone else; his identity and sense of purpose have been ground down to almost nothing under the wheel of countless other people whose purpose was to ‘protect the people of remnant,’ with the last vestige of ozma’s self and chosen purpose being the pretense that he’s cursed because he must stop salem. but the uncorrupted form of ozma’s ideal self is that he was a hero searching for a just cause to die for until he found in salem a reason to live and the uncorrupted form of his chosen purpose is that he would forsake the world to be with salem; the final tragedy of the lost fable is that the corrupted nature of ozma’s false-ascension made the desecration of his identity and purpose inevitable.
and of course whole narrative flows from the tragedy of the lost fable and the story is very much about setting it right—healing the broken fairytale—which means, obviously, that ozma’s curse must be broken; meaning the cruel and twisted facsimile of ascension inflicted on him by the god of light needs to be undone, and simply liberating him from oscar is not enough; his self-identity and chosen purpose have to be restored too, because the false-ascension must be repaired in entirety. <- ozlem endgame
conversely salem is going to win. not in the sense of winning the war per se or even accomplishing her current goals necessarily (<- that depends on what, exactly, she’s planning), but in the lost fable she articulates (several times!) an ambition to liberate humanity from divine tyranny and, frankly, after V9 i think anyone who doesn’t think that salem is and has always been entirely earnest in that ambition is either not paying attention period or just not interested in engaging seriously with the text. so salem is going to win because what she wants is for all of remnant to be free from the god who wants to blow it up and torture her for eternity. lol.

I don’t like Taiyang Xiao Long.
I do not like the character of Tai.
I do not like the line of “Well I guess you lost some brain cells along with that arm” at 6 minutes in Volume 4 Episode 4.
I do not like having Tai be ableist towards his own daughter after a traumatic event.
You know what else I don’t like? Being told that I “interpreted the scene wrong” or that “Tai was just joking with Yang” or that “that’s normal dad and daughter behavior” or that “you’re overreacting” or “that’s not ableist” or that “why focus so much on this one part of the show when there are bigger things to critique about RT?” (Yes these are all real things that have been said by people in a Discord server I’m in.)
1) How the fuck do you incorrectly interpret a scene? If there’s commentary by the shows’ creators saying something other than how I saw it, then yeah sure, I was wrong. Until I see that, then all interpretations are relative and change from person to person. I see it as offensive and in poor taste and others might not bat an eye.
2)I think I’m missing the joke. Last time I checked, saying things like “ha you lost an arm” isn’t very funny. Or how about “ha you’re in a wheel chair and can’t move your legs ever again”. Or “ha you’re blind.” It seems like it’s Tai laughing at Yang’s expense. You know, his own daughter who had her arm cut off, doesn’t know where her little sister is, had her biological mother abandon her, her second mother figure possibly die, you as a father become distant and neglectful, her uncle struggles with alcoholism, one of her friends has been dragged to Atlas by her evil dad, and her other friend seemingly also abandoned her and this is all done in front of her former teachers. Of course why not try to have characters both be in serious mode and comedy haha funny moment when dealing with trauma, that certainly won’t come off as wanting to eat your cake and have it too.
3)If that’s how your dad normally behaved around you, I recommend you seek out a therapist to talk that out.
4) Maybe. Maybe having three different people come after you for saying “hey this scene came off as ableist to me” is over reacting but whatever.
5) Thanks for saying that making fun of someone losing a limb isn’t ableist, that sure isn’t ableist in itself. Not like RT has had a horrible record when it comes to ableism.
6) Maybe because RWBY is RT’s major show? Maybe it’s because I want to be critical of media I consume? Maybe it’s because how RWBY is handled reflects the nature of RT?
Hey, maybe I struggle separating art from the artist. Maybe I’m biased because I think that Burnie Burn’s yellow Tesla looks stupid. Maybe I should just shut up and consume media. How dare I question the fictional characters in a show made by a slimy corporation?
But fine, fine, I’ll play devil’s advocate and give RT the benefit of the doubt for once, which I have stopped doing because if you give an inch, they take Miles (pun intended).
Alright let’s assume that Tai normally makes jokes like this and Yang is used to it and she’s fine with it. Let’s assume that Tai is joking with Yang to lift her spirit.
We can now see where Yang learned to joke the fear and discomfort away from. Tai in his attempt to lift Yang’s spirits when she’s feeling down has taught Yang to joke and smile when she isn’t feeling good. He isn’t teaching Yang how to confront her emotions, accept them, and healthily work through them. We see Yang doing this in V8, which gets called out by Ren.
Does this make Tai a bad parent? Not quite. Tai gets a “ehhhh he’s not inherently bad” compared to a “yes he is bad”. Not a lot of improvement there.
So yes.
Tai is a bad character, and RT are ableist assholes.
Thanks for trying to shut me up Discord people, really make me feel so okay with myself that my ideas and views on media I enjoy watching is seen as wrong and I’m just an idiot. Why even try.
Now if you need me, I’m gonna keep pirating V9 and praying that RT collapses. You have fun consuming product and giving money to assholes.

The fact that Blake Yang and Weiss are all walking forwards / moving up in the intro from V1 to V9, but Ruby in V1 STARTS closest to the front / the viewer and regresses backwards. Thinking about her being there for Jaune, hyping up her team in volume two and their second semester of school. Comforting Penny and being her first friend. She’s there for Oscar always the first in his corner, she helps give Qrow his huge wake up call and her “I’m not leaving without the lamp!” which I loved in V6.
She started out on an 11 in terms of that upbeat / determined protagonist but she’s not Unaware. She’s never been Unaware. After V3 we do see her somber expressions and looking worried but it’s usually if not always when nobody can see her face. Again V4 when she and Jaune are carrying Qrow and she says that Ren and Nora will be fine after they split up. Jaune expresses doubts and it’s only when she turns her head forward again that worry fills her face. She has always put on that brave face even as she grew from naive clumsy new leader of RWBY to kings leading RNJR, friends who are putting their faith in her and Jaune who was meant to be the leader letting her take center stage. Her mother was the leader of STRQ, she has silver eyes and was trusted with so much. She learned so much. Lies unraveled and she had to make up plans and they failed but she kept going. She kept trying.
And then V8 happened. She saw the Hound. We don’t know for certain that Summer was / is now a Hound but if she went off to fight Salem and never came back then that’s what happened to her right? If the best of the best couldn’t do it when she was the proper age to enter Beacon and not some kid who cheated her way in then what makes her think She can do it. She can’t even fight without her weapon and that has gotten her and others into trouble time and time again.
With each big transition (and outfit change for the visuals) the girls have gotten stronger. They have found some part of themselves they have grown in some way. They had lost some insecurity or fear. And while of course this is not the end of their journey, and Yang I am looking at specifically because poor girl thought she was Dead and was pushed into leaving Patch maybe sooner than she was truly ready for, Ruby’s V4–6 self being behind her V1-3 self is so. That’s when she was making the most leader like decisions. Outside of the school setting with adults and vulnerable citizens now needing to be saved or convinced she and her other band of teenagers can save the day. And then the most recent version who Does have a legal huntress license and Did go on actual missions with other trained huntsmen, is the one farthest back and the most lost and scared and miserable.
Up until now Ruby has had the least amount of big character moments compared to her team, but I do not see her as stagnant so much as…. Her cheerful optimism and drive to keep moving forward was once her sincere true ideology and has now become a mask. She has growth as a fighter and a leader but she was not prepared for the gods and Salem. And in a perfect world she would not have to fight this. But she does, and she has not allowed herself to be seen how she truly feels because there’s no room for a little girl to cry and fret and prove those old hurtful true. She cannot Change from the cheerful go getter she started as because the people around her Need that now.
But that hasn’t been who she really was since the fall of Beacon and it’s catching up to her fast. She pushes the bolder up the hill farther than anyone but now it’s fast in its race to flatten her and she is Tired

Deliverance on the Third Day | Esther 5:1-14
Main Idea: All of history and our lives past, present, and future hinge upon what took place three days after Calvary!
1. Approaching Deliverance With Confidence (v1-8):
(v1-8) “On the third day Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the king's palace, in front of the king's quarters, while the king was sitting on his royal throne inside the throne room opposite the entrance to the palace. 2 And when the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, she won favor in his sight, and he held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. Then Esther approached and touched the tip of the scepter. 3 And the king said to her, “What is it, Queen Esther? What is your request? It shall be given you, even to the half of my kingdom.” 4 And Esther said, “If it please the king, let the king and Haman come today to a feast that I have prepared for the king.” 5 Then the king said, “Bring Haman quickly, so that we may do as Esther has asked.” So the king and Haman came to the feast that Esther had prepared. 6 And as they were drinking wine after the feast, the king said to Esther, “What is your wish? It shall be granted you. And what is your request? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be fulfilled.” 7 Then Esther answered, “My wish and my request is: 8 If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my wish and fulfill my request, let the king and Haman come to the feast that I will prepare for them, and tomorrow I will do as the king has said.”
Review:
The news that every Jew will be “destroyed, killed, and annihilated” (3:13) has been received as expected.
Mordecai has responded through a public display of grief, but also with action, soliciting the help of Esther, asking her to plead with the king for deliverance (4:8), but also asking Esther to gather the Jews for a 3-day fast (4:16).
He has shown signs of confidence by saying that if Esther remained silent, there would still be “relief and deliverance, from another place” (4:14).
Esther initially responds passively because she has no reason to be confident (4:11).
History tells us that there was always a Median soldier standing behind the throne holding an ax.
Death would come to anyone who approached the throne uninvited, “except the one to whom the king holds out the golden scepter.” (4:11). Was Esther willing to test it out?
It had been 30 days since her last interaction with the king (4:11).
But there is hope: “On the third day” (v1).
“Israel are never left in dire distress more than three days.” - Jewish rabbi.
Every Jew would have been familiar with this but Esther isn’t a normal Jew, hiding her identity up until now.
Did she remember God’s covenant, Jewish tradition, or her royal position?
She puts on her “royal robes” and she approaches the “royal throne”.
Esther is referenced as “Queen Esther” for just the second time; a declaration that her queenship was no accident.
This was a massive risk but it was met graciously!
She had “won favor in his sight, and he held out to Esther the golden scepter.”
She ceremoniously responds when she “touched the tip of the scepter” a symbol of approval and security.
The king invites his queen to make known her “request” with a confirmation that he would oblige (v3).
Esther responds by inviting the king and Haman to a “feast” she had “prepared for the king” that day (v4).
At the feast, “as they were drinking wine” the king asked again Esther’s desire while again confirming he would oblige (v6).
This was a suspenseful moment but Esther’s responses in verses 7 and 8 do not alleviate the suspense.
Rather than stating her actual “wish and request” she invites Xerxes and Haman to a second “feast”.
Esther exhibits confidence by taking complete control over the situation, stating respectfully that “tomorrow I will do as the king has said” (v8).
There is no indication that Esther was walking with God. But the evidence points to a change.
There is a connection between this and Heb 4:16.
2. Securing Deliverance Through Recklessness (v9-14):
(v9-14) “9 And Haman went out that day joyful and glad of heart. But when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, that he neither rose nor trembled before him, he was filled with wrath against Mordecai. 10 Nevertheless, Haman restrained himself and went home, and he sent and brought his friends and his wife Zeresh. 11 And Haman recounted to them the splendor of his riches, the number of his sons, all the promotions with which the king had honored him, and how he had advanced him above the officials and the servants of the king. 12 Then Haman said, “Even Queen Esther let no one but me come with the king to the feast she prepared. And tomorrow also I am invited by her together with the king. 13 Yet all this is worth nothing to me, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate.” 14 Then his wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, “Let a gallows fifty cubits high be made, and in the morning tell the king to have Mordecai hanged upon it. Then go joyfully with the king to the feast.” This idea pleased Haman, and he had the gallows made.”
While confidence is exuding from Mordecai and Esther, we are witnessing nothing but recklessness from the prideful Haman.
According to these verses, Haman has it all and still isn’t satisfied.
We could have it all, but if we don’t have God’s deliverance, we will not only be unsatisfied, but we will act in a pridefully reckless manner that will seek to destroy all those that get in our way.
Haman was given the second position by the king of Persia and now he was being given two feasts by the Queen of Persia.
He of course was “joyful and glad of heart”.
Why do the lost look so happy and satisfied at times?
Psalm 73: “Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. For they have no pangs, their bodies are fat and sleek; pride is their necklace; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind.”
Haman’s disposition shifts immediately when he sees Mordecai at the “king’s gate.”
He saw that Mordecai “neither rose nor trembled before him.”
He is filled with “wrath against Mordecai” (v9).
In the moment he restrained himself from acting on his fury and tried to make himself feel better by sitting his friends and wife down, recounting all that he had and all he had accomplished (v10-11).
Haman even felt the need to boast about the special invite from the Queen (v12).
“All of this is worth nothing to me...”
Haman  couldn’t get past the slight and his hatred towards Mordecai (v13).
His wife and friends suggest that Haman murder Mordecai and be rid of his only problem in his life.
Even encouraging him to build a “gallows fifty cubits high” (75-feet).
The suggestion “pleased Haman” and he had them built (v14).
Haman was so blinded by his pride that he had no sound reason within him.
He had sought deliverance in earthly, temporal circumstances that could never appease him.
He had traded the Creator for creation, seeking the way of folly. This led him to act recklessly.
We will never be able to secure our deliverance through anything but Christ.
To attempt to do so is reckless.
Christ, on the other hand, calculatingly chose to die the death of a criminal for our sins in our place.
3 days later, he rose from death. To bring us life!
Reflect: Are you seeking deliverance through a confidence in Christ’s death and resurrection on the third day, or are you seeking it recklessly through other means?

It wouldn’t be my favorite show if ppl didn’t keep up the 10 year long tradition of not acknowledging banana boy as an important character the writers write things about on purpose. Feels like home going out this way.
“Why did they waste an episode focusing on JAUNE instead of anyone else? What about Ruby or Raven or Yang?!”
Deep breath.
Because the company is shutting down and anything that they release are the episodes or parts of the episodes they had already finished and can edit in such a way where they feel it’s good enough to release.
We don’t know. And may never know. What their entire plan for Beyond is. The last stream is on the 26 so maybe someone will ask how many episodes they had PLANNED before learning THE COMPANY WAS BEING SHUT DOWN.
“This is the very first entry in which I guess is going to become my journal.”
Maybe their goal was for 12 mini episodes to touch on specific things that they can’t show super in depth in volume 10 / things they wanted to shine a light on. In rwby proper Sun and Neptune being silly goofy detectives would not match the somber and serious tone of the epilogue we saw. Much like world of remnant was a world building story book of exposition and narration, Beyond doesn’t quite fit into show proper. What I love about rwby being a web series is that it CAN have these offshoots and branches and funny side things and STILL have the main story. Like an OVA.
IF we had gotten Ruby v9 aftermath in this episode instead: what would ppl be okay with seeing. It’s less than six minutes just like volume one episodes. She could not “Tell Yang about Raven, bond with Oscar, have a talk with Pietro” all at the same time. If anyone reads this then maybe they’ll snap “any one of those is better than what we got” and maybe they truly believe that. Or maybe if crwby picked the “wrong” thing to focus on they’d say why This and not That.
The company is shutting down and anything that is released is what they already had finished Enough.
Knocks on the glass. We still have Two Whole Episodes. Next week could be Bees or Weiss family or Penny talk or Ruby. We. Don’t. Know!!!!! What I do know is that it feels familiar in a toxic relationship way to see people bitching YES BITCHING about having a Jaune focused episode. That’s an uncomfortable constant. Won’t miss it but as the Company Shuts Down it truly feels like old times.
The episode was amazing by the way in case people haven’t watched it bc of Jaune. The art style is lovely, it showcases the lingering trauma of the ever after. It’s got Jaune having sympathy for Oscar. “He never apologized!!” And neither did Emerald who episodes before joining the team was helping Cinder fight Penny. It’s not a plot hole. It’s not lazy writing. We clearly have seen Jaune grow to care and worry about Oscar post his volume 6 wall push. Immediate after that he’s so upset when they find out he’s missing. I’m assuming in the show context they had made up. Just like I’m assuming Raven has told ppl she’s the spring maiden after her daughter went missing. Like. I too wish we saw more of things but we didn’t and we gotta move on about what isn’t gonna happen or might not happen the way we Think It Should.
It’s less than a month until the company is shut down along with the apps. Isn’t that fucked.
I WANT to tag this. But I won’t. But if you do find and read this please know that I’m not knocking people for Wanting Other Characters. I’m 100% on board with man I wish we had gotten a glimpse into someone else.
But under the circumstances of who they can get, what they’ve already made, and just. Their own emotions about working so hard for something they might never get the legal rights to work on again. Having a short episode about the secondary main character of the show (I count all of team rwby as main characters all four are the mains) after what he’s gone through and the specific context of feeling out of place. Coming Back Changed in a way that relates to Oscar. Was Intentional.
And to be perfectly honest if they took up five minutes of a show proper episode yall would fucking riot so. As a Jaune fan who understands the anting to see team rwby count your blessing this Jaune Feelings is presented the way it is bc again. Yall would throw a fit if this was a PART of the show proper.
