Special fanfic edition!

Idk why that's just what's going on today

Honestly the main news of the day is just so many words I never thought I'd be stringing together here it's mind boggling. Who knew when we woke up this morning that our new hero was going to be a Taylor Swift update account runner who just finished doing time for being an IDF conscientious objector?! And yet HERE WE ARE! This now forever legendary louie was released today from Israeli prison, where she was doing time for her refusal to do her mandatory service in the armed forces, which is good enough already for me to call her a hero but wait! There's more! Before she even made it home from jail she was logged into twitter catching everyone up on her time on the inside, from gay sex and movie nights with prison break movies (did they watch Papillion? probably!), her prison notes which range from musings on ethical consumption under capitalism (spoiler- there is none) to exhortations to "stream Two Of Us!", and best of all, to tell us about the binder, labeled ‘The History of Jews in Eastern Europe’, that was snuck in and circulated among prisoners that was in fact full of explicit Larry fanfic!!! Apparently it was (still is I imagine) very popular and in high demand in exchange for cigarettes even though the readers were blissfully unaware of Harry and Louis' status as actual real life human people and of the concept of fanfic generally. Fair enough, it was AU fics anyway.

More fanfic news! Ao3 is up for Hugo award! Like, the site as a whole, so sort of by extension all the fics on it- cool! Wattpad, on the other hand, continues to be a writhing pit and not in a sexy way- more revelations of plagiarized fics as writers discovered the popular practice of stealing fic, changing all the names to make it about someone else, calling that "translating," and complaining about authors who make it hard to steal their work. Wattpad's policy continues to be that only the author of a fic can report it as a theft (because they recognize that authoring something does, in fact, mean it belongs to you HMM SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...) so if you've ever posted to Ao3 and find this upsetting you may want to search to see if it's been stolen. But otoh take heart, you're a Hugo award nominee!

And in other news of people who are unaware of Harry's status as a real human person, more on the creep who yelled at him in NY; today she was called out by Tyler Oakley, who tweeted the vid and dragged her ass. Good! Also good, British GQ catching on to the magic of the hitties and writing about Harry's "man cleavage." We been saying!

And finally, it seems like Fizzy's service was today and I want to send all the love in the world to her family and friends. Holding her and Louis in my heart every day but today especially.

I just saw the list and people talking about it, but I completely missed the context, have no idea what’s going on, except that my interest is irrepressibly piqued and I think I saw you reference it the other day? rrrregards - Incompetent Lurker

Oh, god, I feel so inadequate, both as a good tagger and as someone who can coherently describe this prison fic list situation, lmao. Okay, so about a month or so ago, a girl who ran (still runs??) a Taylor Swift update account, freshly out of an Israeli jail for refusing to serve in the IDF, made a list of things she had learned serving time, one of the biggest being that her fellow prisoners had a binder full of Larry fanfic disguised as European history that they passed around on the DL. I *think* that’s the gist, feel free to @ me if I’m wrong, y’all.

This sparked a big wave of people making their own prison fic rec lists, lots of discourse about the length of these stories and how they would fit, whether they were from wattpad vs. ao3, how dare xx fic be included but xx fic be excluded, a lot of these fics are actually ~problematique, none of them are all that recent, etc. Plot twist: turns out the main girl who created the binder didn’t realize it was One Direction fic?? She just knew the character names?? (This all came out last night, along with the official list, so there was a sense of closure over on the twitter side of things.) My spotty records/searches show April 2, so if you want to dig through her twitter feed, you can probably find a LOT of the history there…I did some searching on tumblr and didn’t find a lot in terms of a masterpost or anything, but, yeah, wow, it was a real ~time!!

#someone told me she's a bit of a harry hater so if that bugs you #be advised #she's pretty prolific too so if you're digging you're gonna see a lot of posts!

I know! It was so funny seeing how far her retweet of Owen’s clip went - it turned up again and again on my dash.

Like there is a lot that is terrible about the world at the moment obviously, but it’s also brilliant and amazing.
