Five things, huh?? Okay, let’s do this. Thanks for the message @anemonensblog
#1 - I’m a good listener/non-judgmental: I have always said to friends I don’t care how bad they feel about something they’ve done, if they need to talk, it’s 100% a judgment free zone. I’m not here for judging people. Life is messy, complicated and those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. I know from personal experience it’s never good to keep things bottled up and having someone to speak to who doesn’t side-eye terrible decision making is so important.
#2 - Writing: Sometimes I think my writing is terrible, sometimes I’m super proud of it and other times I fluctuate between the two. In all cases though, I just love writing. I love being able to write and take so much from that creative outlet. A large part of having the confidence to do so comes from fandom, so
#3 - Being Bi and Non-Binary: It’s not always easy and I’ve struggled with both things for a variety of reasons and I still don’t have it all figured out. That aside though, it makes me see the world through a different lens. Being able to volunteer with LGBT organisations - I’ve spoken in places from schools to prisons about LGBT matters - and march at Pride events where bisexual and NB people can feel invisible makes me so energised. Even one voice can make a difference and it’s been amazing how many people I knew way back when have contacted me privately since I came out and said...yeah...me too. I’m so happy it’s who I am, even in those moments when it still hurts.
#4 - My hair: I used to have long hair and when I left the corporate world I had it all chopped off and dyed it pink. It’s currently dark purple and I’m contemplating a rainbow thing next week. I used to hate my hair. It felt flat and never sat right, but I love it so much now it’s short. I feel like ‘me.’
#5 - That I’m fannish: I get obsessed over things (probably why I relate to Nick, LOL). Fandom changed my whole life - it made me pick up writing again, it introduced me to some of my favourite people, it gave me something to get excited about during dark days a few years ago and it’s let me explore so many deeply personal things through reading and writing fic, cosplay and just in general discussions with people. It’s given me an academic focus and has helped me get published as a freelance writer and an academic. I would never have had any of that, if I wasn’t the person who reads a book about a boy wizard and can’t stop thinking about it, even after all this time ;-)

I thought it was really good. It did a lot that separated it from the way war stories are usually told that I really appreciated. There were times when what I appreciated about the movie was undercut (by sentimentality or cliche), but it didn’t undermine the movie as a whole for me.
