Tmblrvision 2023 Announcement #4: Venue, Presenters, Running Order, and Live Show Date!

32 songs have been submitted to compete in Tmblrvision 2023. It's time to announce the venue, presenters, running order, and most importantly, the date and time of the live song reveal show!

Venue

The venue for Tmblrvision 2023 is Millennium Stadium (also known as Principality Stadium) in Cardiff, Wales. Opened in 1999, Millennium Stadium has hosted numerous sporting events including the 1999 Rugby World Cup Final, football matches during the 2012 Summer Olympics, and the 2017 UEFA Champions League Final. It has also hosted and will host large-scale concerts by artists such as Ed Sheeran, Stereophonics, Beyoncé, Coldplay, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, and Foo Fighters.

Presenters

Two iconic Welsh singers from two different generations will be presenting Tmblrvision 2023!

Bonnie Tyler is a legend whose biggest hits came in the 1970s and 1980s. Some of her greatest hits include Total Eclipse of the Heart, Holding Out for a Hero, and Believe in Me.

MARINA aka Marina aka Marina Diamandis aka Marina and the Diamonds is a singer-songwriter who broke through in the 2010s. Her biggest hits include Hollywood and Primadonna.

Running Order

The running order was drawn on 25 July 2023. As is tradition, the position orders for both the host country Wales and the winner's choice Ireland were randomised beforehand, while the other 30 were drawn into halves and then a particular position. Live Song Reveal Show Date

The live song reveal show will be on Saturday next week, 12 August 2023, at 20:00 CEST. Posts including postcards will be posted on this website/Tumblr, while a live viewing of the participating songs - including a live chat - will be on SyncTube; the link will be shared next week.

Tumblrvision Staging Concepts

I’m not very active on tumblr europal contests (or tumblr at all actually, at least lately), but I do take part in a roleplay in the format of a song contest, in which you come up with staging for the song you’re sending, among others. Someone suggested I do that with Tumblrvision entries, so I guess I’ll do them all in this post. Whatever I come up with will not necessarily reflect my personal opinion of these songs.

01 Germany: Regular band setup. I feel like it’d help better if I knew what the song talked about… typically other people I roleplay with who send these kinds of songs put pictures on the background screen relating to whatever the lyrics are about, I feel like something like that (maybe with graphics/animations instead) would work.

02 Egypt: Traditional dancers. Elaborate costumes, maybe a dress change or two. Camera angles would have to be dynamic and shot up close.

03 Moldova: Okay so she’s wearing a minidress, maybe in silver, and alone on stage at first. When the song starts the camera is on her face a la Bulgaria 2016 but it slowly zooms out eventually turning into a wide shot of the whole stage. The stage lights and graphics are predominantly blue. When the chorus breaks out dancers come on stage, probably male, dressed in white, but the singer stands still. Rain falls from above (on the background screen). When the bridge comes on, the stage lights dim and lighting is focused on the singer, but then everything returns to normal as it ends.

04 Belarus: I really don’t know what to do with this uhh… I’d say a band setup, with the singer mostly standing still but the lights flashing and camera giving dynamic angles that the performance still seems full of action. As the end nears… the graphics become more colourful, I guess.

05 Finland: Singer would be wearing something white, rather avant-garde. Background graphics, if any, would be in white and black (maybe occasional silver and the like), basically a very modern, “Apple” vibe. I’m thinking backing dancers but I’m not sure if it would suit the song… oh there’s a rap. He’d be wearing a white veil too, probably. 

06 Albania: This one starts off with her alone on stage, also wearing a massive veiled cloak which covers her entire body and even the stage floor. Dancers come as the song begins to intensify, dress reveal. The choreography here is very… sudden, not necessarily intense, but fits the intense, vigorous atmosphere of the song.

07 Jordan: Dancers, and everyone on stage is wearing colourful summer outfits straight out of H&M. Choreography fits the fun, summer-y vibe of the song. Wide shots, maybe except during the more quieter parts of the song, where it’d be a close of up the singer and the singer alone.

08 Czechia: I can imagine there be furniture on stage, maybe a fancy couch. Band setup surrounding that couch. Just like the music video, people on stage are wearing a mix of leather and fur with streetwear. Singer starts out singing from the couch (either sitting or laying down) but ends the performance standing on the front of the stage.

09 Russia: Dancers on stage, of course. Maybe mixed, maybe all-male. They’re either all looking dapper in suits or wearing streetwear. Colorful but dimmed lights, emulating a nightclub. I guess the choreography would be fast-paced like in the music video.

10 Israel: The stage could look barren, or it could have a folk/country band playing. Either way, the lead singer is there in hipster-looking clothing, as well as the guy playing the tambourine, probably sitting away from the center of attention, and most of the time just appearing in the background. Speaking of background, the LED screen displays a field. Clouds or stars? Either work, or perhaps it alternates. The UFO from the music video would also make a nice touch to that sky. Also possible is 2 ballroom dancers tucked away on a satellite stage if any, or in an empty corner of the stage.

11 Montenegro: Tbh I’m not even sure if this is physically possible but on stage there is a long platform made of flammable material shaped like a bridge. You know what’s going to happen. The singer does start out standing on this bridge, but she struts down the path very stylishly as the first verse progresses, and towards the end lights that match and tosses it just as she steps off the platform. It doesn’t really get any more exciting from here, unless perhaps parts of the ‘bridge’ could be engineered to collapse at certain moments to sync with the song. By the end of the song it’s supposed to have collapsed entirely. Well then, cue a quick interval segment before the next postcard as the crew clear the stage…

12 Andorra: The music video is simple enough that the performance could just be an enactment of it. If not, simply the singer with whatever musical instrument he plays could work. Either way, there’s a band behind him. Maybe put on something a bit traditional/classy or whatever fashion style that works with the song.

13 Lithuania: Okay I didn’t really catch much of the lyrics but from what I heard perhaps a pilot theme could work? Again another band set up (of course a quite different band from the previous), perhaps there could be 2 dancers putting on a visual story but if the band and singer have themed costumes then we could go without dancers.

14 Portugal: If the singer were to just bring his guitar on stage and sing in front of the mic alone on stage that could work. If a similar staging concept could beat the fan favourite at the second chance round of a certain ESC national final, then it can definitely work here.

15 Tunisia: I suppose there would have to be some sort of contrast between the two. One could be dressed in more traditional garb while the other puts on something a bit more modern? Also maybe have some traditional dancers on stage, with slightly different sets of choreography when one or the other sings.

16 Bulgaria: A sunset color scheme with dancers could work. Of course Poli would have to join in with them on the choreography. They’re all wearing something summer-y. Streetwear again, I guess.

17 Iceland: Mostly black is used in this performance, maybe with a splash of another dark colour like purple. Greta would be wearing a dress with really big sleeves, it might look a bit medieval. Hood optional. She takes it off and reveals another skinnier, but still black outfit beneath just in time for what appears to be the bridge, and then takes off the mic from the mic stand and takes a few steps toward the front of the stage. This whole time, however, the backing singers are at the back of the stage, not really moving much.

18 Monaco: The song’s beginning already sets the tone here and it is intimate. The singer could be wearing a colorful spring dress (maybe one with flowers), and pretty much keeps to herself during the whole performance, just standing there in front of the mic. But the real star here is the titular “Woman in the blue skin”, which means there will be one dancer whose skin was painted blue for this performance. The choreography will be something a bit more artistic, then.

19 Armenia: An extravagant intro a la Wild Dances. Full of dancing, perhaps Sirusho does a number along with men dressed as traditional warriors. Potential choreographies: the dancers lifting Sirusho into the air, spinning/other circular movements, wrapping arms around each other’s shoulders and forming a line. Also expect pyrotechnics - this entire performance is just going to scream high energy.

20 Denmark: The performance begins with the singer standing alone on stage, which might be covered in smoke/fog. Everything would be dark, the LED screens off or at least showing only the color black. The singer is wearing a glittery white pantsuit similar to Norway 2013 except with pants of the same design. The song may be slow, but eventually there could be backing dancers with fast-paced choreography. Wide shots are used, creating the feel that they are dancing at the edge of an endless void, or something like that. It just… feels empty.

21 Algeria: 2 potential stagings: the first, the singer stands there in front of the stage in front of a band setup. the second, her being alone on stage though potentially there are holographs or similar graphic effects. Either way, the background shows a magnificent night sky, with a moon.

22 Slovakia: The choreography in the music video could be easily adapted for the live performance. The singer and dancers are wearing the kind of fashion you’d typically see in high-end nightclubs.

Ren “Roasts” Tmblrvision 2017

Of course I have opinions.

I don’t have the time or energy to review each entry, though, so I’ll probably just try to review a selected handful of songs, such as those I televoted for, those I almost televoted for, and the Top Ten.

I gave three televotes to Lithuania. This was my absolute favourite song of the season, and I did spend a night listening to their entire album (and will likely continue to do so, to be honest). I personally thought this was better than last year’s entry, which was an early betting odds favourite, so I was a little surprised to see it perform underwhelmingly here. I felt it was underrated and I’m glad televoting lifted it up to the left side of the table.

I gave one televote to Germany because I’m a ho for Clueso. Loved the song when I first heard it, love the song still now, end of.

I gave one televote to Andorra, and if I wanted to rig the results, I’d probably have given it even more televotes, because IMO it didn’t deserve to place as low as it did. It definitely stood out this season, and out of the “odd ducks” (I’d include Monaco and Lebanon in this category), it was my personal fave, though all three had their charms. (If I’d televoted later, I might have given Lebanon a vote as well, as it grew on me on successive listens.)

I gave one televote to Algeria. It was one of the songs that was stuck in my head, which considering I didn’t understand a single word she was singing was quite a feat. I had considered giving it two televotes instead of one, but that would have meant not giving a televote to another song. In other words, had I been a jury member, this would’ve gotten my 10 points. I’m glad it finished high on the televoting table and landed in the overall Top Ten.

I gave on televote to Bosnia and Herzegovina. There were few purely (almost kitschy) happy songs on this season so this definitely scratched an itch I had. This song never fails to make me smile and bounce so of course it was gonna get a televote.

I gave one televote to Malta. This was the feel-good vote among my televotes, the one that benefitted from me taking away a vote from Algeria. This is, as the kids say, a “bop,” and I can’t help dancing whenever I hear it.

I gave one televote to Poland. This was a song that grew on me as I listened to the playlist repeatedly and has emerged as one of my top personal faves. There’s something soaring and lovely about the song and his vocal.

I gave on televote to Luxembourg. This was one of the first songs submitted and I really enjoyed it, I was so happy to have a nice fun rock song from an unexpected country, and it’s a song I’ll gladly listen to over and over again. It had to get a vote from me. Funny how it ended on the right side of the board on both votes but finished on the left side in the combined result...

There were quite a few songs on my long list, but in the end I’d ditched them for these seven. Some didn’t quite hold up after repeated listens, some just didn’t have a special quality that really pushed me to give them one of my votes. It’s not that they weren’t good; they were just... not great (enough) IMO.

Also, I was listening to the Spotify playlist more as I was on holiday at the time, so entries that weren’t on that playlist were at a disadvantage. Latvia, Macedonia, and Serbia weren’t on that playlist and so I couldn’t remember them at all. Albania had a different version on the playlist from the official entry, so it would’ve been unfair to rate it based on that. I think the biggest casualty was France, a song which I remember loving (I even voted for it in its NF) but because it wasn’t available for me on German Spotify, I couldn’t love it enough to get a televote from me. If I’d had a Top Ten, maybe it would’ve still snuck in.

I kind of knowingly stayed away from returning and established artists, since for me the appeal of these contests is to discover something and someone new. Australia might have been the biggest casualty of the lot, as I love the song but was already familiar with it before the contest, so when it came to cutting a song from my televotes, it was a bit easier to let go. Other songs in this group I enjoyed were Italy, Spain, Belgium, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

And now to review the Top Ten....

10. United Kingdom There were a lot of strong females with strong voices in this edition, and alas, they all kind of cancelled each other out for me. It’s not that they weren’t good; it’s just that in the end, I kind of got sick of that genre and decided not to vote for any of them. (I’d throw Montenegro, Czechia, and Sweden into that group.) Plus Emeli Sande also fell into that group of songs and artists I was already familiar with, so it went down on my list.

9. Belgium I love love love Loïc, but again, it was easier to put him lower on my list because he was a returning artist, and the song was familiar to me. I’m happy he placed second among all returning artists, though.

8. Algeria Underrated in the jury vote, I’m glad this did well in the televote. I guess this was many HoDs’ 11th or 12th place.

7. Norway It’s not a bad song, and maybe in another season or time of year I would’ve enjoyed it more, but being on holiday in the tropics wasn’t the best time to listen to some rather gloomy Nordic music. (Even “worse” in this regard was Denmark. Maybe in the dead of winter I’d have ranked those songs higher, but not in the summer.)

6. Czechia Basically the same comments as United Kingdom, though it would’ve ranked higher because I wasn’t familiar with either the song or the artist. Might’ve been a contender for my Jury Top Ten.

5. Australia Was a contender for my televotes until I had to bump it off in favour of songs and artists I’d never heard of before.

4. France WHY IS THIS NOT AVAILABLE ON SPOTIFY GERMANY. Could’ve gotten a televote if it were.

3. Moldova I’ll be honest - I couldn’t (and still don’t) remember this song, and was confused that this was doing so well in televote, because it just wasn’t “sticky” to me. But I guess it was sticky enough for enough people to vote for it and give it the televote win. Personally, not convinced.

2. Italy Lovely song, and I’m glad it did as well as it did. Probably would’ve been a contender for my Jury Top Ten, though of course I’d have docked points for being an artist I didn’t know. At least the song was new enough that I hadn’t overplayed it before the contest...

1. Israel This was also a contender for my televotes, but in the end it just didn’t have that “oomph” to get one from me. It’s a lovely little song and a worthy winner, but it just didn’t grab me enough. I dunno if I’d listen to it regularly now that the show is over but I wouldn’t skip past it.

Thank you for actually giving points to a song everyone stopped listening a year ago

I don't know exactly where to start if I'm being honest, this years edition has been a genuine blessing. I mean I'm still surprised I placed 17th with so many bops in the running. I want to thank @eurenvision so much for hosting this for the second time and going ahead with it and I hope he keeps going with it next year, I mean the amount of work that goes in to make as good a contest as tmblrvision must be huge especially for just one person. I have never hosted a contest before so I appreciate EVERYONE who hosts contests but I have a special place in my heart for ren because he started the whole tumblr europal contest thing. I also want to congratulate @childrenoftheeuroverse who sent a bop and really deserved to win. I also want to thank each and every hod who gave me points (especially for the douzes <3) and every hod who put in the time and effort to find amazing music (unlike me) See you in amerivision!!!

Welcome to Return Of The Jordan, Jordan's very first national final in @tmblrvision history!

Jordan has a history of less than successful results, and hasn't been present in the contest since 2017, but now they're back with a mission to bring home a better result than usual, and to showcase the diversity of the Jordanian music scene!

This national final will start with two semifinals with 8 songs each. To vote, rate the songs in one or both semifinals individually. You also have the option to disclose your favorite song in that semifinal. The songs across all semifinals that received the highest ratings will move on to the grand final, in which voters will rank their favorite finalists. The winner will be decided based on a mixture of semifinal and final results.

Without further ado, let's reveal the songs!

The recap videos contain 30 seconds of each song, so watching them allows you to vote in both semifinals in less than ten minutes. Voting based on the recaps is highly preferred to not voting at all!

She Got Me In The Flood (She Got Me X Özönvíz)

My entry for @ravevision is made up of the following two songs:

- She Got Me, by Luca Hänni (Switzerland in Eurovision 2019)

- Özönvíz, by Joci Pápai (Hungary in Tmblrvision 2018; the singer also represented Hungary in Eurovision 2017 and Eurovision 2019)

I really like both songs and I was kinda shocked when I found out that both songs have the same key and very similar BPMs (She Got Me has 97 BPM and Özönvíz has 103 BPM), so I thought.... why not? And I enjoyed the result, so I wanna share with you guys this mashup!
