Why on earth would I want you to express your individuality? No. I want you to play your designated roles.

“But do you mean to say, my dear,” remonstrated the Jew, “that the women can’t be got over?”
“Not a bit of it,” replied Sikes.
“Not by flash Toby Crackit?” said the Jew incredulously. “Think what women are, Bill.”
“No; not even by flash Toby Crackit,” replied Sikes. “He says he’s worn sham whiskers, and a canary waistcoat, the whole blessed time he’s been loitering down there, and it’s all of no use.”
“He should have tried mustachios and a pair of military trousers, my dear,” said the Jew.
“So he did,” rejoined Sikes, “and they warn’t of no more use than the other plant.”
the oliver twist retelling we’re actually missing out on is the one about flash toby crackit and his increasingly desperate and ridiculous attempts to seduce acutely unimpressed housemaids into helping him do a break-in

Last few weekends of the Times included interviews w/Bruce Dickinson, The Liverbirds, Bananarama, Cyndi Lauper, Maisie Williams, Michael Sheen and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Plus an extract from Suzi Ronson's new book about her time working with David Bowie.
There were also features on the rise in fantasy romances (particularly those being written/read by women), politics of girl band styling and Biba (as a new exhibition is opening soon - I've always loved the Biba style + I wish I could have shopped there back in the early 70s).
Also had reviews of The New Look, Alice + Jack, Expats, Masters of the Air, Sexy Beast, One Day, The Jury: Murder Trial, Shogun and The Completely Made-up Adventures of Dick Turpin.

it's so interesting to me that the name he says before he kills turpin is his own and how he relishes in that moment ( except for josh's portrayal who just wants it over ). todd doesn't mention his wife and how turpin killed her. todd doesn't mention his daughter turpin had abused. he seems to forget about that. while a "and this is for my wife! and this is for johanna!" would've been cheesy for this musical and especially that moment, i can't help but feel like this was purposeful. revenge has become purely selfish. it isn't to protect johanna or in honor of lucy's memory. this is all for him. he even decided to let johanna go earlier in the musical, implying he wouldn't have tried to reconcile with her. in fact, he forgets about the fact she was coming that night in the first place. revenge is all that's on his mind. revenge is selfish. to seek revenge may lead to hell, but he burns in the afterlife knowing that his only mission has been completed. no second thought to his wife who he called his reason at the beginning of the musical. no second thought to his daughter since said goodbye to her memory and let her become a ghost despite the fact she was still alive. just his revenge.

The Wigmaker’s Sequence alone in Sweeney Todd is just sheer musical euphoria. I have no reservations in calling it Sondheim’s opus and easily the best score (and possibly the best libretto) in modern musical theatre.
