since it looks like the discussion of tonight has all the 'loathsome juice' drinkers crawling out of the woodworks-
if there's anyone out there who does it for moral reasons, rather than convenience, and would like to switch to an equally ethical and significantly more palatable option, i'd be happy to instruct on the Vitreous Path (in exchange for equal favor, of course)

I had the idea to draw a creature with teeth like this, then I gave it a huge tongue and realized it was only a quick skip and a hop from being a Vitreous Drinker, so I turned it into that.
Vitreous Drinkers are from DnD, they are my absolute favorite monster to play and encounter, though they don’t have official 5e stats. Here’s a nice little video on them, and a 5e stat block for them in the description. >>>>

Vitreous Drinker
Image by Wayne Reynolds, © Wizards of the Coast. Accessed at the Monster Manual IV Art Gallery here.
[I used one of these guys in my Age of Worms game, to replace the inevitable noble ghoul character in Wolfgang Baur’s adventure. Noble ghouls are fine and all, but a solitary undead rogue in 3.5 would have been mincemeat to my party. The vitreous drinker was a suitably durable and creepy replacement. My version streamlines some of its abilities, notably the spectral ravens, which are too good in the original.]
Vitreous Drinker
This hunched, robed figure is human shaped, but its skin is covered with hundreds of bulging eyes. Its mouth is agape, and its tongue is disturbingly long and prehensile. Ravens perch on its shoulders and hover about its body.
A vitreous drinker is a horrible undead creature made from the body and soul of a spy or voyeur—anyone who watched others without their consent. They are animated by a violent desire for secrets, and will gladly kill for them. More often, though, they turn their victims into unwitting agents, clouding their vision with magical cataracts that allow the drinker to see through the victim’s eyes whenever it wishes. As such, vitreous drinkers will often conduct hit-and-run attacks to create multiple windows into the world. If pressed, or if prevented from fleeing, they use their spectral ravens to deliver deadly touch attacks while lashing out with their gnarled hands and piercing tongue.
Vitreous drinkers typically work alone—they make minions, not allies. A vitreous drinker may sell its secrets to the highest bidder, infiltrating mortal society in disguise so as not to give away their horrific nature or weaken their clientele with their awful visage. Such urban drinkers make spies from the dregs of society; beggars, thieves and vagrants with milky eyes are common in cities where a vitreous drinker dwells. Occasionally they will partner with the clerics of an evil god or some fiend in pursuit of higher knowledge, but such alliances last only as long as the drinker feels it has some information to gain.
A vitreous drinker stands as tall as a human, and their withered frames are typically slightly lighter.

Special Abilities
Drink Vision (Su) Any creature struck by the tongue attack of a vitreous drinker must succeed a DC 21 Fortitude save or have its vision magically impaired. A creature with drunken vision gains a 20% miss chance on all melee and ranged attack rolls within 60 feet, and cannot see at all farther than 60 feet. A vitreous drinker can concentrate to see through the eyes of any creature currently suffering from drunken vision as long as the two creatures are on the same plane. It does not suffer any penalties from the vision of its victim, using its own senses as appropriate.
This effect can be removed with a break enchantment, remove curse, or similar spell against CL 14th. This is a curse effect, and the save DC is Charisma based.
Horrific Appearance (Su) All living creatures within 60 feet of a vitreous drinker that can see it clearly must succeed a DC 21 Will save or take 1d6 points of Strength damage. The save DC is Charisma based.
Spectral Ravens (Su) A vitreous drinker can use its spectral ravens to deliver any of its touch spells at a range of 60 feet once per round.
Tongue (Ex) A vitreous drinker’s tongue is a primary natural weapon that deals piercing damage. A vitreous drinker’s tongue has an additional 5 feet of reach beyond the vitreous drinker’s usual reach.
Unholy Grace (Su) A vitreous drinker gains its Charisma bonus as a deflection bonus to its Armor Class and CMD, and as a resistance bonus to its saving throws.

Snecko Oil
Wondrous Item
Aura: Strong Enchantment, Strong Transmutation
CL: 18th
Weight: 1 lbs
Slot: N/A
Cost to Buy: 15,000gp/dose.
This thick, pungent, lime green syrup is often kept in bottles molded to look like coiled snakes. A single whiff of the stuff is usually enough to send even the most hardened adventurers reeling, but many breeds of spellcaster find the aroma strangely enticing rather than unbearably foul. This, sadly, does not translate well to its taste.
Created with equal portions of oil scraped from the scales of the mythical Snecko and the vitreous fluids of its enormous, hypnotic eyes, Snecko Oil runs so slowly that imbibing it requires a full-round action that provokes an Attack of Opportunity to do, and it’s unpleasant the entire way down, automatically sickening the drinker for 1d4+1 rounds if they’re capable of casting Arcane or Psychic spells. If they cannot cast either Arcane or Psychic spells, the drinker becomes nauseated for 1d4+1 rounds instead.
Arcane and Psychic casters imbibing Snecko Oil are overwhelmed by an influx of mystic power, instantaneously regaining up to 20 levels worth of spells, either by recalling spells they’ve already cast (if they’re a prepared caster) or regaining spell slots as though they were never expended (if they’re a spontaneous caster). Regaining two level 9 spells and two level 1 spells is but one possible combination an imbiber can perform, but unfortunately, in addition to the rarity of the ingredients needed to create it, Snecko Oil has crippling side effects which prevent it from being abused too thoroughly.
To begin, in addition to the sickness caused by drinking it, the overwhelming influx of mystic power automatically confuses the victim (as the spell Confusion) for 1 hour. Immunity to confusion or mind-affecting effects as a whole does not block this out, but it does reduce the confusion to a single minute rather than a full hour. Adding to this, whenever the user casts an Arcane or Psychic spell within the next 24 hours, they’re struck with confusion for a number of rounds equal to the level of the spell being cast (min 1). Again, immunity to mind-affecting effects does not prevent this, but reduces the duration of the confusion effect by half (min 1, still).
Construction Requirements: Craft Wondrous Item, Calm Emotions, Suppress Charms and Compulsions, Protection From Chaos, Mind Blank, Mage’s Lubrication. 7,500gp.

An Early Eva Zeisel Design
In celebration of National Design Month, October’s Object of The Week posts honor past National Design Award winners.
A version of this post was published on November 13, 2012.
Eva Zeisel, a major figure in twentieth-century industrial design, won the National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2005. Although best known for her contributions to mid-century American modernist ceramics, she worked with manufacturers around the world, in a career that spanned more than eighty years. Cooper Hewitt is fortunate to have examples from her Intourist Tea service, designed in 1933 (Intourist was the Soviet Union’s official state travel bureau).
Zeisel began her career in her native Hungary in 1925, and by 1928, was designing modernist ceramics in Germany. After visiting the Soviet Union in the early 1930s, she took a job at the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory in Leningrad. Zeisel explored the factory’s archive of eighteenth-century tableware and realized that “the clean lines of modern design could be successfully combined with sensuous, classic shapes.”
Her Intourist tea service consists of short cylindrical and circular forms. To meet the Soviet drive to rationalize ceramics, Zeisel designed the simple shapes for inexpensive production as well as for visual and physical appeal. Designs for the Lomonosov Factory also had to meet state-set standards of social realism. This service’s painted decoration, “Leningrad, 1935,” designed by artist Varvara Petrovna Freze, commemorates the city’s new and old monuments. In celebration of Soviet achievement, a lively, colorful scene featuring a “modern” sculpture or official building is presented on one side of each piece. The Soviet self-image stands in contrast to a staid, gilded image of a historic site on the opposite side. The hot water pot[1] shows a view of Sergei Evseyev’s 1926 statue of Lenin, countered by the gilt image of the nineteenth-century St. Isaac’s Cathedral (below). Zeisel’s minimal ceramic forms are accentuated by traditional gilded decorations of ribbons and flags at the mouths, handles, and spouts. The service presents a fascinating combination of design for utility, for appeal, and for the communication of Soviet propaganda.
Hot Water Pot from the Intourist Tea Service (“Leningrad 1935” Pattern), view of St. Isaac’s Cathedral; porcelain, vitreous enamel, gold; 1989-41-88-a,b
In 1936, one year after being appointed artistic director of the Russian china and glass industry, Zeisel was falsely accused of conspiring to kill Stalin. She was imprisoned and spent most of the next sixteen months in solitary confinement, but was then abruptly released. Zeisel emigrated to the United States in 1938. She taught ceramics as industrial design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and began to revive her design practice. She brought a unique and playful organic modernism to the tableware and furniture she designed well into 2011, when she died at age 105.
Cynthia Trope is Associate Curator of Product Design and Decorative Arts at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
[1] Cooper Hewitt’s Intourist group consists of a hot water pot (used as a teapot), creamer, sugar bowl, two cups, and a saucer. Reflecting Russian tea-drinking practice, Zeisel designed the service as a five-piece range, including a pot for heated water and a smaller teapot to contain a strong infusion of tea. This allowed each drinker to mix different amounts of the concentrate and hot water, making a cup of tea according to their own taste. See: Karen L. Kettering, “Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory; Dulevo Porcelain Factory” in Eva Zeisel: Life, Design, and Beauty, Pat Kirkham, Pat Moore, Pirco Wolfframm (San Francisco, CA: Chronical Books, 2013), 58-59.
